Re: Nintendo Forgot That You Can't Complete StarTropics Without The Original NES Manual

BooJoh

I posted the reddit thread this is sourced from, and I wasn't doing it out of any sort of anger or malice against Nintendo, but I also don't think it's a non-issue.

I genuinely love Startropics, and I hope people who didn't get to play it back in the day will give it a chance now. I really just wanted to get the word out to anyone who might be too stubborn to google game puzzle solutions that this will halt their progress.

I do find the disparity in Nintendo's attention to the matter between VC and NSO disappointing, but it does seem to just be an oversight and I hope to see the code added as a footnote in the game's NSO details box.

I'm glad some sites have picked up the story because it gets the information to more people who might otherwise give up on a great game.

Re: Nintendo Is Shutting Down StreetPass Relay Stations In Japan

BooJoh

@shaneoh I think Homepass relies on Nintendo's relay servers to function, it just spoofs IPs so that the relay servers think all the homepass people are at the same relay hotspot. So homepass will probably go down with the relays.

It really is a shame that such a cool feature is going to be gone for good.

Re: Random: It's Hard to Resist Importing These Super Famicom Joy-Con Kits

BooJoh

@clvr I'm not positive but it looks like the left Joyccon's buttons could be put in whatever configuration you want. One of the user images on the JP one is different from the manufacturer's pic. I imagine you could make it match the right, or do Left-Red, Right-Green, Up-Yellow, Down-Blue so that they match in single-Joycon mode.

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th December (North America)

BooJoh

Terraria is tempting, but $20 is twice what it costs on PC (4x what I paid,) and more than it costs on most other platforms too. I guess that's the downside of something getting a retail release. I'll wait for reviews and/or a sale.

I'll probably grab FAST, I doubt it'll really scratch the F-Zero itch but it might come close.

Re: Review: Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (Wii U)

BooJoh

I've enjoyed what I've played of the game. Sure, it's a fairly simple board game and the winner is often determined by your luck playing the Stalk Market, but it's relaxing and charming in the way only Animal Crossing can be. There's also longevity in developing your board game town to add to the variety of vignettes that play out and which villagers show up. Plus the island escape game is pretty cool and the AC amiibo are adorable.

Re: Pokémon Picross Arrives On The 3DS eShop Early December

BooJoh

@Dief88 Examining videos and screens, it looks like Picrites are needed to unlock stages, and also there's an Energy Meter that tops out at 200 and goes down by 1 every time you place a pixel. This has a timer under it so I assume it slowly refills, and it has a Y button icon so I assume you can spend Picrites to refill it. Also, according to Serebii it has a spending cap much like Rumble World did.

Re: Pokémon Picross Arrives On The 3DS eShop Early December

BooJoh

I love Picross and this was actually my favorite surprise from the direct, but I hate how every Pokemon spinoff is getting shoehorned into f2p. I want to pay my $6-$10 and be done like with the Picross-e series. Hopefully the pay model will be generous enough to either let me buy a full unlock or at least play a couple puzzles a day for free.

Re: Video: This is How Single Player Works in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

BooJoh

I'll give the online demo a trial when it's live, but since I don't really have anyone to play the game with and I'm not a fan of playing with randoms, I'll probably end up passing on the game. Shame too, everything about this game - other than the forced multiplayer - looks great.

@Nomad I don't know, I loved Lost Vikings but that was a finely crafted single player experience that relies on switching characters. This just looks like they tacked on an unpolished way to play when you didn't have the ability to play multiplayer.

Re: Nintendo Download: 17th September (North America)

BooJoh

Year Walk sounds like it could be great on Wii U, I might consider it even though I haven't played my Steam copy. I remember hearing tons of love for Car Battler Joe back in the GBA days, seemed to be one of the sleeper hits, and Plague of Shadows looks fantastic. Seems like a pretty decent week to me.

Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America

BooJoh

Well, I wanted the black model, I only like one of the sets of included cover plates, and I can't afford to spend an extra $180 on a system this month, so I guess I'll just start saving up just in case NOA releases a black system in the coming months.

Sticking with my MH4U New XL for now.

Re: Super Mario Maker's eShop Pre-Load is Live in North America

BooJoh

@DiscoGentleman Yup. A simple 5 minute phone call is all it takes to get the physical book with your digital copy. Check the official site for the game, it says right there "The book comes with all physical copies of the game. For digital purchases, check your Nintendo eShop receipt for instructions on how to request a copy. You can also download a free digital version of the book on the official microsite when the game launches. Offer only valid in US, Canada, and Mexico."

Re: Super Mario Maker's eShop Pre-Load is Live in North America

BooJoh

@Chaotic_Eevee There's no precedent for this on console AFAIK. I don't think you get discounts for preloading on Xbox or PlayStation either. Preloading is generally there so you don't have to wait for big downloads when the game releases. If I had to guess I'd say release sales on Steam usually serve the same purpose as most Steam sales: getting people to actually buy PC games.

Re: Super Mario Maker's eShop Pre-Load is Live in North America

BooJoh

@sleepinglion The incentive is that you can start playing the game the moment it releases digitally after a tiny download update, while all the people getting the physical version have to wait until the next day or later, or at best wait in line at a store at midnight while you're playing already.

Re: Super Mario Maker's eShop Pre-Load is Live in North America

BooJoh

FYI, you can order digital and still get the free PHYSICAL book.

For people in US, Canada, and Mexico: if you order digitally your receipt will have a toll-free phone number to call. All you have to do is give them your name, address, and Wii U serial number and they'll send you the physical Mario Maker idea booklet for free when the game releases. I just did this, it was quick and easy and my order is shown as pending on my Nintendo online store account.

Re: Super Mario Maker's eShop Pre-Load is Live in North America

BooJoh

I've been waiting for them to put this up. I'm a little disappointed that it's the same price even though it doesn't come with the physical bonus booklet, but this is a game I want to have always in my system ready to boot up. And regardless of size, preloading means I can get started right at midnight when it releases instead of spending an hour or two downloading on my meager 1MB/sec connection.

Re: Nintendo TVii Service Ends In North America On August 11

BooJoh

I don't even know what exactly it was supposed to do. Without cable or satellite it was useless to me, it seemed like it was supposed to have some level of support for Netflix but I wasn't able to figure out what you could do with it. I'll be glad to be rid of the useless icon on my home screen.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As PlayStation 4

BooJoh

@FragRed To be fair, at this point it could outclass PS4 and third parties would probably still not support it because of the Nintendo stigma of "people buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games only."

The best we can hope for is support for game engines that allow for extremely easy ports that require very little work/budget, and even then who knows if it'll get support beyond what Ubisoft has been giving Wii U.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As PlayStation 4

BooJoh

If it's a handheld hybrid as has been rumored for ages, this doesn't seem like a huge deal. Otherwise, while I'm a bit disappointed that Nintendo will yet again release a system with less power than systems already on the market, I'll still be there for the games. Wii U has been an utter failure, and I don't regret my day 1 purchase at all.

Re: Nintendo Download: 25th June (North America)

BooJoh

@sonicmeerkat StarFox Command is pretty different, but I enjoyed it. They basically tried to make a game out of everyone's favorite SF64 level and it wasn't the best but plenty of people enjoyed it. It's worth playing if only for all the different endings you can get.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Hints at Smaller New Nintendo 3DS for North America

BooJoh

I think everyone is misinterpreting his quote.

To me, he's basically saying "We don't have plans to bring the small model to NA at this time." and following that up with "Keep your eyes out for new SKUs [of the New 3DS XL]" because to them, new special colors of XL is as good as a replacement for the faceplates, and they don't think people care about the size.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo's E3 Digital Event Brought Franchises We Wanted, But Not The Blockbusters

BooJoh

I thought the puppets were great. Star Fox looks amazing, I actually think Federation Force looks interesting even though I don't care for the Prime series. Happy Home Designer looks better than I expected but the cost for cards will add up. AC Mario Party is a real head scratcher. Overall though, it was underwhelming, and far too much multiplayer focus for my personal tastes. It feels like they're winding things down for Wii U and next year they'll drop some NX bombs.

Re: Splatoon Producer Interview Sparks E3 Animal Crossing Wii U Speculation

BooJoh

I don't understand why so many people want AC on Wii U so badly. City Folk was heavily panned for not being portable (in addition to being basically a port of Wild World) and I'd assume AC just does better on handhelds.

I did play AC:PG and AC:CF extensively and I would do the same with a Wii U version, but I'd prefer they just keep the series portable until they make it cross-platform with save transferring like MH3U.

Re: Humble Bundle Issues Official Statement About Region-Locked Nintendo Promotion

BooJoh

As Nintendo fans, there are constantly times when the grass is greener on the other side, this just happens to be the latest time. Whether it's releases delayed in one region, VC games missing in one region, bigger game selections for some promotions, better eShop sales, or even specific colors/models of hardware not making it to one region or the other.

For what it's worth, I'd happily give up this humble bundle (which I did buy) for a NA region small n3DS.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's DeNA Plans and Ideas Are Smart, Not a Beginning of the End

BooJoh

I'm still not interested in gaming on mobile, even from Nintendo. I'll probably try any f2p stuff they put out on iOS, but I'm more interested in the experiences on their dedicated gaming hardware, and if releasing some stuff like Pokemon Shuffle or Puzzle & Dragons Mario Edition on mobile allows them to stay afloat while not abandoning their dedicated gaming machines, then I suppose it's for the best. It's still a little sad to see Nintendo essentially buckling to the silly demands of what their investors have been asking for years, but I'll try to remain cautiously optimistic about it.
