Love them or hate them, Pokémon X & Y were revolutionary titles in the Pokémon handheld series - and not just because of their enhancements in art style and graphics. The two games introduced the Mega Evolution mechanic, where a selection of Pokemon were able to Mega Evolve into a Super Saiyan-like form of themselves by holding a Mega Stone, gaining massive boosts in stats and abilities.
However, not every fan-favourite Pokémon received the Mega Evolution golden ticket, which led to many creating their own designs of their favourite Pokémon's Mega Evolution equivalents. Thankfully, the recent Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire games helped this issue by introducing even more Mega Evolutions, with Pokémon such as Mega Pidgeot, Mega Salamence and Mega Metagross being a handful of welcomed candidates.
There are still many fan-favourite critters who have yet to receive the Mega Evolution nod - one of which is Flygon. The Ground/Dragon type has been quite a popular fellow for several reasons, and its Mega Evolution buff has been long-awaited. With that in mind Nintendo Dream magazine's recent interview with Game Freak's Ken Sugimori has revealed that Mega Flygon was once a consideration. Sugimori stated:
For Aarune, he needed to have a Pokemon that could use the moves Fly and Secret Power, which are perfect moves for finding Secret Bases. And the only Hoenn Pokemon that wasn't used by a key character that fit that criteria was Flygon. It does not Mega Evolve, but I really like Flygon.
When the interviewer observes that Flygon is an exception in terms of the fact that key characters often carry a Pokemon that can Mega Evolve, Sugimori-san admitted that there have been plans to introduce Mega Flygon.
Flygon has had the potential to have a Mega Evolution since XY, but we were unable to complete a design and so it was dropped from consideration.
So it turns out that Flygon's Mega Evolution was dropped because of artist's block! Do you wish Flygon had a Mega Evolution, or does your current utilisation of the insectoid dragon perfectly fit your squad? Who else do you think deserves the Mega Evolution call? Share your thoughts below.

Oh god don't tell the Flygon fanboys about this
I would love Flygon to get a Mega Evolution and I am suprised it still hasn't at this point, but now I have just read why!. I'm sure it will get one at some point down the line. I would LOVE an Arcanine Mega Evolution too!!
Dang.
Well, at least it's considered!
I'm sure he'll get one in the future, along with most other pokemon.
Unfortunate to hear, but at least this shows that - contrary to some peoples' beliefs - GameFreak doesn't want to put out bad Pokémon designs. Hopefully it'll get an awesome one later.
If Flygon had a Mega, four Pokemon on my team would be able to Mega Evolve.
Flygon is one of my Hoenn favourites. I was really surprised to find out it never got a Mega Evolution in the OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire games. They really shoud make a Mega Flygon in the next Pokémon game.
Slow news day?
@andyg1971 Comments like these...sigh...It was pretty interesting if you ask me - it came directly from an interview with the developers themselves, and answered those who were wondering about it. Not everyday is going to hold news about the latest game footage of Zelda U or confirmed Smash DLC etc. The article clearly interested you since you've taken the time to comment on it.
How awesome would Mega Rapidash be?
But one thing Pokemon needs to do to, um, evolve, is have cross breed pokemon - new pokemon that you can only get by breeding two specific pokemon, such as Pikachu and Marill, while holding a particular new item.
@andyg1971 Slow comment day?
Dammit, he's one of my favorite Gen 3 Pokemon! I hope he gets one in later games.
@andyg1971 read the quote - I think it's newsworthy for Pokefanatics, and don't you want Pokefanatics to want to check Nintendolife for news?

@TwilightAngel @MadAdam81 Exactly my point, thank you.
@blackbox64 Lol too late
It's not as if they still can't make it and then patch it in. Then again they were too lazy to patch in the new megas into X Y since it's easier to make a game obsolete and force fans to buy another game they shouldn't have to buy than it is to add value to what's still a recent release and pander to the fans.
Just Gamefreak taking advantage of the fanbase as usual.
But seriously, come on, Flygon is the ONLY Hoenn dragon to not get a Mega. Hell even Sceptile, whose not a dragon to begin with, becomes a dragon type after evolution. This is way too lonely for Flygon.
I still can't believe the hype for mega flygon. I never considered it to be that popular...
@Amiibo I love your avatar lol
I would like to see a mega vivillion or mega raticate just think they would be interesting.... pikachu def needs a mega he is like the mascot of the entire pokemon series, even if you've never played or watched pokemon you know who pikachu is. Fingers crossed.
Couldn't have been any worse than mega audino or salamence.
Calling it: it'll show up in Pokémon Z.
eh ohwell its my Fav Pokémon but not overly fussed
Heck, I'm just happy Sableye got one. Flygon could use one too, but I feel like it's pretty strong already. Though I'm sure someone will tell me otherwise.
Hahaha, this is what really happened: Mega Flygon was in the game for quite a few months, but after seeing Gore Magala, Gamefreak decided to take Flygon out and tweak its design to be more inspired by the ferocious monster that we all have the pleasure of fighting in Monster Hunter 4.
@Rhys Actually, Flygon is pretty frail. It also isn't fast enough and doesn't deal enough damage to make up for how frail it is. Poor thing, it's my favorite Pokemon too. I wish Gamefreak would balance all of the Pokemon more so that they all have their own strengths that make them just as viable as the rest. This is why I think they should make exclusive abilities that help a Pokemon's species out when up against something that far outclasses it so that the playing field can be evened out.
...So they can do stuff to Pokemon like Salamence and make him all weird and ugly, but not Flygon? lol
@SanderEvers @Edwards Since the Megas usually go to fully evolved Pokemon it'd actually be Mega Raichu... which isn't a bad idea now that I think about it.
I hope as the series goes on all final stages get Mega evolutions. Early gens for me always had the problem of coming up against the same damn team every time when playing against others. But as more monsters came in teams got more varied, it was exciting because you didn't know what was coming anymore! Then mega evolutions happened and once again the same teams starting appearing over and over (at least, in my experience). But if every final evolution could go Mega it'd even out again
Plus, seeing an official Mega Klefki would make my day! No, really!
Design challenges!? Look at mega ampharos!
@LoveSugoi I'm aware that pikachu isnt the top of his evolution chain but neither is Slowbro but he got a mega we can only live in hope! Lol
@Ogbert Hahaha, if you're talking competitively, you almost ALWAYS know what to expect. If anything, mega evolution HELPS Pokemon by trying to level the playing field for Pokemon that just weren't up to the task of tangoing with a Tyranitar. Truthfully, all the Pokemon need a little more balancing done. Although, I long for the days back when natures, IVs and EVs were made specifically to give Pokemon variety and personality, so no two Pokemon would be alike. Humans always have to go and ruin things though. Now ya can't play against people and have a shot at winnin' if ya don't breed. It's something we all have to do now, whether we like it or not. I hate it truthfully, but I gotta do it.
(doesn't stop me from using my Jolteon, Milotic, Venasaur, Ninetales, Typhlosion and a bunch of other "not up to fluff" Pokemon competitively though )
My Pokemon team: Blastoise, Mewtwo, Pidgeot, Greninja, Beedrill, and Pangoro. Blastoise is my all-time favorite Pokemon, and he holds a special place in my heart. I got him in Fire Red, then transferred him to Emerald, then transferred him to Diamond, Platinum, Soul Silver, Black, White 2, Pokemon X, and he currently resides with me in Omega Ruby. I still love him to this day, even though he's virtual. His moves are Hydro Pump, Rapid Spin, Skull Bash, and Earthquake. I know this is off topic, but reading this Article got me thinking about my Blastoise
Meaning "We held him back for Pokémon Z"
@Ogbert
You actually see a bit of that already, some Pokemon are viable without their mega, leading to some interesting mind games. The only ones pretty much guaranteed to mega evolve are ones that aren't very good without theirs.
@MitchVogel
More like they ran out of time to waste on figuring it out, so they had to move on. I doubt we'll see a "Pokemon Z", more likely AS2/OR2 or something along those lines.
@Zombie_Barioth There has to be a Pokemon Z. The previous titles, X and Y, would make absolutely no sense if there wasn't one. Think about it. With Z, all three basic coordinate planes would be present, going with the "3D" motif.
@MitchVogel In multiple interviews Gamefreak has outright denied a "Pokemon Z" from happening as well as anything else they've done before. They claimed that they wanted us all to be surprised each time they announced their games instead. We'll see what comes up next. I wouldn't be surprised if it's totally different from the standard third version and even sequels we've had in the past. Something different is coming... I can feel it. Like a sailor can feel a storm-a-commin'.
@BlatantlyHeroic
Nope, Pokemon Z for 3DS, coming this November.
I really want to see Mega Flygon in a future title.
@Luffymcduck There hasn't even been an announcement, and they seem pretty against the whole idea of third versions now.
flygons is a great pokemon... but dat 4X ice weakness
@MitchVogel
The problem with that while X and Y are based on coordinates, they're not based on dimensions. They represent differing opinions and the ways in which they're expressed. Its also based on the origin point, the point at which they come together.

As @Blatantlyheroic pointed out GameFreak doesn't want to do the same thing they've been doing with the series, they want to surprise fans. That's why we got B2/W2 instead of a grey version.
@Edwards
What you said about Pikachu is true.
But other wasn't.
Slowbro is final form (not counting Mega Slowbro)
Slowpoke can evolve to Slowbro or Slowking. (so Slowbro and Slowking is final).
Same goes to Gloom. It can evolve to Vileplume or Bellossom. So they are final.
It shows that they put a lot of thought into each design they release.
lol yeah i call that ridiculous as some of the mega designs we have got come on -_- there is a lot of fan art around flygon and its mega im sure they could of looked at some of the fan art designs and got some sort of a idea for it like others mentioned it couldnt turn out worse then the megas we got
but true it could just be held back for the next pokemon games as they have to plan ahead on how many more to release
@BlatantlyHeroic
They still have time to do that. X & Y's story was so meh they would have to do something pretty awesome for X2 & Y2, or just make something really good gameplay wise. On the other hand, I'm sure that someone at Game Freak just wants to finish their three dimensional XYZ-trilogy with Z.
@Edwards No, Slowbro is the end of his evolutionary line; Slowpoke has a split evolution; one goes to Slowbro, and the other goes to Slowking (trade Slowpoke with King's Rock).
So, yeah, Mega Evolution only seems to happen to final evolutions, which makes sense.
@adambomber2001 pikachu is also at the end of one of his evolutionary lines as he can only evolve into riachu using a thunderstone so therefore could still be entitled to a mega evolution. Hey even if they were to give riachu a mega I would be stoked. Anyway just a theory. who knows what those crazy minds at game freak have planned. Lol
@Luffymcduck
Except that like I told @MitchVogel, the games aren't based on dimensions, so there's no trilogy. The games are based on differing opinions and how they come together. The quote is on page 2.
http://www.gamesradar.com/pokemon-xy-why-director-masuda-himself-answers/
@Edwards
Pikachu isn't at the end of it's evolutionary line. By your logic, neither is Galade, Honchkrow, or any other stone-induced final form. Besides that, evollite by itself proves you wrong. Pikachu can use evolite, which can only be used by Pokemon that aren't fully evolved.
@Edwards Nnnnno; Raichu is still a final evolution regardless of the thunder stone, and the only mega evolution has only gone to final evolutions so far, and they seem to represent what final evolutions would look like into the far future, so there is really no evidence of Mega Pikachu, other than Game Freak's possibly unhealthy obsession with Pikachu, and even then, Mega Pikachu wouldn't make sense.
A SPLIT evolution line, however, is another story.
My first assumption is that the character design is already so over-the-top that adding anything else to it would make it tedious to draw/model. Pokemon like this already look out of place among the plethora of more simple looking ones.
@likalaruku
Are you talking about the picture in the article? Its not official artwork, its a fan-made mega evolution. Flygon itself is relatively simple, it'd fit right in with gen 1 or 2.
pick one

I'm sorry that's just bull crap , you mean to tell me ALL those hundreds of Pokemon you created and you can't many one look different, you have lamps, Ice cream, even furniture as Pokemon and you can't make one look different. I feel very ambivalent about that it's utterly egregious , you must hire ppl with an insatiable craving to create things new someone with imagination instead you have the antithsis of that person. I know I could very well do better
@Troubled It's not something I can't understand for. It's true. All these and their dad went out of their ways to make their own special snow flake "Flygon Mega Evolution Design!" so it's understandable that they can't find a good original art. Think outside the box, they created so many Pokemon, why can't they just make a good Mega design? It's because they can't, all of the good design are all watermarked by these "Deviantart" some are like 12. What goes around comes around I guess.
@blackbox64 too late
