There’s already been some encouragement to nominate the likes of Banjo-Kazooie and Shovel Knight in Nintendo’s Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, and now in a growing trend, there is yet another iconic character calling for players’ precious votes.
Team Meat is asking fans of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS to vote for its iconic indie character, Meat Boy.
While this one is most certainly a long shot for a number of reasons, it hasn’t stopped the creator of Super Meat Boy from tweeting its character in a screen alongside Mega Man and his spinning saw blade projectile. It all seems just a little too appropriate.
Despite never actually being released on a Nintendo platform, Super Meat Boy has quite a history with the Wii. The 2010 release was originally announced as a WiiWare title and was cancelled later in the development cycle due to the game’s file size expanding beyond the limits imposed by Nintendo. It was later considered for a retail release on the Wii, but third-party publishers knocked it back due to profitability concerns so late in the system’s lifecycle.
This is also the second time Super Meat Boy has been discussed as a potential candidate for Super Smash Bros. with Team Meat explaining in 2013 it would be prepared to work with Nintendo again if its character made it into Smash.
Let us know in the comments if you would consider voting for Meat Boy.

Still dodging saw blades even in smash. I'm a fan of Super Meat Boy, but I can't say I would ever want to vote for him to be in Smash. Awesome photo though.
Quite the pipe dream, eh, Team Meat? I'd rather see characters that, you know, have appeared on Nintendo platforms in a Nintendo crossover fighting game...
Just saying. :V
Meat Boy is not a classic video game character, and his game hasn't even appeared on a Nintendo console. The character does not deserve to even be considered for Smash.
Hahaha, no. Plus he looks creepy...
Of course they know it doesn't make the cut.this is just a way to remain relevant. Free publicity etc
This story makes me want to not vote for him even more. I watched a documentary about Team Meat a couple years ago. Let's just say I refuse to support them on any way after watching it.
No please.
Ummm... I'd choose Banjo & Kazooie, or Isaac over Super Meat Boy any day of the week.
I've voted for so many characters.... My little brother voted for Gengar, which I thought would be pretty cool. There can never be too many Pokemon IMO.
Even if he had appeared on a Nintendo system, SSB doesn't have blood and gore, and Meat Boy is literally made of blood and gore. It would never happen.
I personally gave my vote to Shantae.
How about Lanky kong, his long arms can be advatageous, and his DK64 grape gun can be his final smash, working like kirby's smash attacking everyone in range/
Super Meat whatever is not good enough to be a pixel in a smash bros. trophy so yeah keep dreaming delusional meat team.
Sorry, but no point in throwing in a character that hasn't ever appeared on a Nintendo platform. If I hadn't voted for Fawful already, I'd have voted for Shantae or Shovel Knight.
Nope, I've already cast my vote for King Bomb-omb.
Team Meat are same people that tried to bait Nintendo into adding Super Meat Boy into Smash in exchange for working on Nintendo platforms.
Of all of the calling for Indie characters (aka third-parties that aren't nearly up to snuff for playable considerations), the Quotes, the Shantaes, the Artixs, the Commander Videos, this is the worst. Unlike any of these, Meat Boy has no games on a Nintendo platform. What makes them think that advertising a character with nothing to offer on the Nintendo side will get Nintendo to add the character or to have them believe that they'll honor their promise? And even if I hadn't thrown my vote towards King K. Rool, the antagonist of the legendary Donkey Kong franchise, there's no way Super Meat Boy would ever get my consideration. Attention seeking at its finest.
Edmund McMillien would be better off suggesting Isaac from The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, which unlike Meat Boy, will actually get a title on a Nintendo platform. It still makes him a huge attention seeker who's insecure about his character being worthwhile in Smash, but at least Isaac has a minuscule history to present to Nintendo.
Yeah, good luck with that.
More arrogance from Team Meat.Like the article says, back in 2013 they wanted Nintendo to put their forgettable character in Smash even though said character's game was never on a Nintendo system.Oh sure, they said they would port the game and support Nintendo, but only AFTER their mascot got recognition in Smash Bros.Simply pathetic
If they truly wanted to work with Nintendo, they would just do it instead of trying to capitalize on Smash Bros success
Jesus, why is the internet making such a big deal about this? I can't believe this even earned an article on here. Natsume has 8 GBA games coming to Virtual Console when Nintendo barely supports it anymore and this gets a piece instead? Really?!?
People are taking this way to seriously too. Super Meat Boy is a brilliant platformer and a modern day classic. He doesn't deserve a spot in Smash, but he is very much a modern day icon in gaming.
and i thought Adventure Quest character was odd choice but this came close
They kinda gave Nintendo the backhand, didn't they? And he's never appeared playable in an Nintendo game, right? Sorry, no vote for you, Meat Boy.
Obvious publicity stunt is obvious. Sad to see this get reported by multiple outlets.
I really like the devs of Super Meat Boy and the game looks so so awesome... But sorry, despite it's potential to sell really well on Nintendos consoles, Team Meat have never released the game on a Nintendo console. No vote from me!
@Retro_on_theGo
What are the games? Or has just the number been released?
@SetupDisk so far Medabots: An RPG Adventure (both version most likely), Medabots: AX (again, most likely both versions), and Pocky and Rocky with Becky which totals 5 games. One of the next three is most likely a Harvest Moon game.
So why should a non Nintendo dev get into one of Nintendo's biggest franchises?
There is like a zillion characters better than that piece of crap. Not saying the games are bad but really? Having the likes of characters like Bayonetta, Shantae, Issac and so many more why would anyone pick Meat Boy.
I for myself are team Shantae!
I am a proud member of Team Shantae who admittedly had a hard time not voting for Daisy, and could probably come up with 1000 characters more deserving of being in Smash than Meat Boy. I'm gonna to type until I grow weary of doing so.
Shantae
Daisy
Bayonetta
Jeanne
Wonder Red
Red the Hunter
Kalas
Travis Touchdown
de Blob
Jill from Drill Dozer
Jill from Resident Evil
Simon Belmont
Soma Cruz
Shanoa
Klonoa
Max
Shovel Knight
Drifter or The Drifter or whatever he's called from Hyper Light Drifter which isn't even out yet but still he's a better more deserving character than Meat Boy
Chase McCain
Edea Lee
Tiz Arrior
Professor Layton
Phoenix Wright
Gretchen, my Style Savvy avatar
and it's time for bed. Hopefully I don't wake up to a world that in which Meat Boy is in Smash.
As amusing as that screenshot is, it'll never happen. In addition to the issue of having never been on a Nintendo system, Meat Boy simply isn't kosher (pun intended) with an E10+ rating.
@Kroisos Actually, Daisy has been playable in Smash Bros. ever since Melee, just never by name. She's always been one of Peach's alternate costumes.
Nope, not gonna happen.
This is laughable. Actually...no it's not.
I wouldn't even make him a trophy.
@TwilightV Ayyy lmao
The battle between Meat Boy and Megaman will be very one-sided. Meat Boy dies instantly from saw blades.
I would like to see him appear in Smash just because I like Super Meat Boy and they could surely come up with some cool moves for him. Not gonna happen, because he's not that popular amongst Nintendo fans, and he is, you know, a chunk of meat with no skin, bleeding constantly, can't see it being a good fit for Smash.
I'd love to see Shovel Knight, though. And Rayman, and Bayonetta, and ... there's so many to choose from. Hell, I would even like to see a boy from Little Inferno
I'm voting for Super Tofu Boy.
@NbaJunkie To remain relevant!? Do you even know how relevant Edmund McMillen is?
I'd rather see the Super Meat Boy game being released on the Wii U and 3DS.
The thing about all existing 3rd-party character in Smash is that they've all had some relationship with Nintendo platforms. Megaman, Pacman, Sonic, even Snake. It's this simple attribute that doesn't place Meat Boy as a valid candidate, nor is really wanted.
King Arthur needa some spot like for a change, I think.
These third party/indie-dev characters deserve a spot more than Super Meat Boy:
and many more... Better luck next time Meat Boy.
I would rather like to see Shovel Knight, Shantae, Simon Belmont or Candy Kong in Smash than this.
Fairplay, I'm sure it's everyone's dream to have their character in Smash, but let's be honest, he just doesn't deserve that spot.
Bomberman People everyone forgets the good ol white bomber...
When did so many Nintendo fans become such haters? He'll never make it in, sure, but can't blame a guy for trying. The pic's a nice mockup, and people should be flattered that Smash is held in such high regard that characters from so far and wide are clamoring to get in.
Especially since Super Meat Boy welcomed so many guest characters into its own game, treating this little campaign with dignity is the polite thing to do.
Between him, Shovel Knight's creator, CommanderVideo's creator, and who knows how many others, it looks like humility is dead.
Devs: "We won't develop games for Wii U" (Meat isn't even on a Nintendo system)..."but vote for my character to be in Smash Bros!"
Me: No, just no. Even as a joke it's stupid. I won't accept Shovel Butt, and there's no way I'll accept Meat Sack.
I doubt any indie game characters will appear in Smash, but even if one or two got in I'm certain neither of them would be this guy.
That gave me a good laugh. Meat Boy in Smash? Yeah right.
@retro_player_22 Cool Spot, I forgot about him.
@BaffleBlend At least those games are good. Renegade Kid does the same thing but the games are garbage. There are a few that don't do that. e.g the creators of Spelunky.
Someone should tell Team Meat that Meat Boy's cameo in another game does not mean he's eligible for Super Smash Bros. To those that think I'm lying, he made cameo's in 3 of the Bit.Trip series games. Bit.Trip Runner, Bit.Trip Fate & Bit.Trip Presents... Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien(The first two were on WiiWare, the third is on Wii U).
I'm still baffled that Waluigi has not been added to the smash bros roster. Assist trophies don't count.
Oh god, and I still doubted him...
This really is the lowest of the low for a developer. I can't believe they're actually doing this.
Super Meat Boy's chances are as slim as Goku or Naruto. How possible is that? As possible as dividing by zero.
Iconic? Pffftt!
Simon Belmont is iconic. Or if Meat Boy is iconic, what is Bionic Commando or Cloud?
If this is happening then we will see Sony asking to put Nathan Drake in Smash.
Yeesh people need to ease up a bit. It never hurts to try and Nintendo did say nearly any character is eligable regardless of origin. Although I can see how this would be unlikely considering Meat Boy's nature and his moveset. Also have you seen that OWI is encouraging people to vote for Abe? Now it may not look like but Oddworld actually has been on Nintendo systems before if you count the Gameboy games
Nope. Absolutely no chance.
Hey developers, if your game is not on a Nintendo system, don't even ask me for my vote.
Even if I was a fan of the character. Even if I owned every gaming system, I wouldn't vote for that character to be in Smash.
I already placed my vote for the Inklings.
Heh, at least meat boy appeared on a home console. Looks at Adventure quest mascot.
This is never going to happen.
I still say that Conker should be a good contender...he could throw beer bottles and aspirin pills at the players...although peeing on them may be a good thing too...oh what am I kidding, we'll probably never even get the game re-released in it's true N64 glory or even a new one in the series by RARE.
lol Shrek has a better chance than this piece of ****.
Meh, no thanks. I'd have Rayman, Bayonetta, Snake, Commander Video, Banjo, Conker, and many many many more over Meatboy anyday.
A bunch of indies are doing this. I've seen pixel with quote, choice provisions (gaijin) try with CV, among others. Yes they could be interesting, but no we need Isaac.
The complaining about them not putting the game on a Nintendo platform is pathetic IMO. It would have had pride of place on WiiWare if it wasn't for Nintendo's restrictions on WiiWare titles. The only way it could have been a thing was if it was a retail title. How many games of that style have ever had success at retail? The idea of a Wii U port? Well sure, but the Wii U launched a good couple of years AFTER the hype. You can't blame them for that.
Super Meat Boy is an iconic indie game. It's probably THE iconic indie game alongside of Braid, Minecraft and Cave Story. Sure if it should be any indie game I'd go with Shovel Knight first because it's more recent and it's more obvious what his moveset would be. But Super Meat Boy? Why not? He fits Smash Bros more than most of the other ideas people are throwing around. Plus he's much more interesting idea than Bayonetta or Snake.
Hell no!
Already voted for Andy in Advance Wars
I'll never vote for Super Meat Boy. Sure, he's a cool character and would fit well, I think, but Team Meat doesn't deserve to have Smash grace their character with a Smash spot after they cancelled the game's WiiWare version in favor of PS3 and 360. "You stab my back, I'll scratch yours?" I don't think that's how the phrase goes.
Even if he got a ton of votes, I'm sure Nintendo would only consider characters that have appeared on their systems. Super Meat Boy shouldn't even appear as a trophy character.
Personally, I'm hoping for Banjo, but I'd love to see a bunch of characters added as trophy characters, if not real characters, including Shovel Knight and Bomberman.
I don't really want Super Meat Boy to get in, but I don't understand why a lot of commenters here are acting hostile about it =s
Keep in mind that Meat Boy has appeared on a Nintendo system before - in Retro City Rampage DX.
In any case, I think Shantae is the most deserving indie character.
What power would he even have? Jump to avoid saws?
No. The character should be one that currently appears on a Nintendo console. Not one that has not ever appeared.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha......
No.
@rdrunner1178 meat boy has appeared on Nintendo's consoles, just not the Super Meat Boy game. He was in the Bit.Trip. compilation games for the Wii and 3ds, as one ( 2 ) example.
Uh, game first Team Meat, then, consideration for SSB.
He's not the only one
Hey! Hey guys, you think mabye its a joke?
I'd rather have Isaac in than Meat Boy.
@Retro_on_theGo Thank you telling me something actually important, I would rather not agure over stupid stuff like this.
Didn't the developer of this pitch a fit and demand Nintendo to put Meat Boy in Smash before? I think that was the one...
@Tman Which documentary are you talking about? I watched Indie Game: The Movie a few years back and was actually pulling for these guys at the end. Just curious if you seen a different doc, would love to view it if is
@White-Wash
As @Hyperstar96 said the other teams were very pretentious. I may have confused Team Meat with Blow and Fish. But yes, that was the movie. I still can't understand where Team Meat has any idea of why Nintendo would put their character in Smash Bros. It would be like me creating the character "Stickman", release a game for PC and then go on Twitter and proclaim that Nintendo should put him in Smash Bros. It makes as much sense as that.
@retro_player_22 but what about Commander video from the Bit trip games he could be a nice character in a game like smash bros.
@khululy Yeah he could be in there too, I don't want to spam the comment section with so many names so I'll just end with Mike Tyson.
.................. no.
I'd say Team Meat would first have to release Super Meat Boy on Wii U (it shouldn't be so hard, it's only a small and simple game) in order to give the fans a reason to put Super Meat Boy into a Smash vote. Right?
This is just dumb.
I WANNA MAKE ISABELLE A FIGHTER...
>goes to voting page<
OK DONE!!!!!
