Charging cradles are nice, and oddly in demand with Nintendo portable systems. Previous limited stock of coloured charging cradles for the original 3DS XL prompted virtual online stampedes to rival those generated by eBay scalpers when Nintendo puts 'limited edition' in a product description. They may just be a coloured bit of plastic, but it's oddly satisfying to place a 3DS in one of these rather than simply plug it in directly.
Nintendo of America isn't exactly going high profile with the cradle for the New Nintendo 3DS XL, however. It's popped up on the rather low-key Nintendo of America online store for just $9, with only one colour (black) available. Nintendo's even gone for particularly dull product images to emphasize its lack of blockbuster appeal; nevertheless it's there, and at the time of writing is still in stock right here.
Are you keen to grab a charging cradle for your shiny New Nintendo 3DS XL?
Thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

So, just curious, do these not work with the older 3DS XL models?
I got one of these charging Cradle with my Ambassador 3ds, but I never use it as its impossible to play with the New 3DS if its in this cradle, as the cradle stops it from opening.
@Spartacus3765 No, the charging contacts are in a different location (direct center on n3DSXL.)
@Spartacus3765 I can't imagine they would, the port is in a different spot.
@BooJoh, @pyrotek85,
Ok, thanks. Still have the older one, myself.
@CashGunsChaos $7 for shipping? Yikes.
I have one. It looks nice and takes up very little space. I'm happy with it.
@VortexTraveller The point of the cradle is that it is set up on your desk, or sideboard, as a permenant feature. This means that whenever you stop playing the 3DS you just place it on charge in the dock, ready for the next session.
I never used the one I got with my original 3DS, as it was massive, but this one that came with my Ambassador edition just sits nicely next to my lamp. No more red lights for me
@CashGunsChaos Well I'd expect to pay about ~20 for something like this in a retail store, so it's not that out of line. Shipping a small parcel isn't free.
Even though shipping was a little steep, I got one anyways. I miss having a charging cradle
I never used the cradle for the original 3DS, and that one had a much more clever design.
Of course they put it up now, after I just ordered one from Japan last week for $3 more.
That link takes you to the Canadian order page. Here's the link to the US order page: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/po/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?categoryNav=false&navAction=jump&navCount=7&atg.multisite.remap=false&productId=prod560458&categoryId=cat550076
In case anyone is curious, these don't come with wall plugs. So if you want a separate plug to power this cradle, add a power cable to your order. It doesn't affect the $5 US shipping rate.
@BooJoh Glad I didn't get a "New" 3DS then, since I only just got a charging dock for my current model a couple months ago.
Trust me, this is an accessory you'll really want for your New 3DS if you can get one, it's super convenient and doesn't take up much desk space.
I'm so thankful for this after I used my 3DS XL since launch without a charging cradle.
@CashGunsChaos
was just about to order, no thanks!
So it's $9 for a "charging" cradle that can't actually charge anything b/c it doesn't come w/ a plug? Thats even worse than not selling the system w/ a plug.
Well at least its not a $349 watch w/ an 18 hour battery life. I wonder if that comes w/ a charger? Probably a proprietary one at extra cost as well.
I imported one around the NA launch of the N3DS XL. It's far from necessary, but it looks sleek and saves space on any surface due to it's vertical design. My favorite thing is being able to see if you might have gotten a streetpass or spot pass through that little notch on the bottom left of the stand.
It's a bit snug to slip in with a strap or charm attached to your N3DS XL, and I've yet to test if it fits with one of those official protective silicon covers (I'd imagine it would, though).
I've used this more often than the one that came with the OG 3DS.
@rjejr it works with charger you already have, calm down.
Still not buying New 3DS until regular size comes out in America anyway. Or just wait until the next gen portable.
I'm saving all the money I can get the n3DS with Xenoblade and the Iwatch. I'm going to be broke, poor, broke.
Yes! My old 3ds xl charging cradle didn't work, so I can set up my charging station (Wife's 3DS, Wii U gamepad, My new 3DS XL). We have a blockade to keep cat away from wires. There is a reason it is called a CATastrophe!
You know, the charging cradle from the original 3DS was a pretty charming, albeit nonsensical concept.
I don't mind it, and I wouldn't mind having one just for the convenience of sitting my system down on a base. But honestly, its not that hard to plug in a chord to the back of the console.
I hope those cradles are still in stock by Friday... cuz PAYDAY!!!! Also I wish the top could be removed now, because I'd buy a black N3ds and make it look like the monster hunter one (I'd do majora but I have the JPN version and that would get really confusing). Ah well. Saves me some dosh. I really need to keep my LBW 3ds anyway.
@rjejr UGH I was not happy with the pricing for the Apple Watch. I wanted the link band until I saw it was 449 sans watch face. 949 total...ugh. I may buy the sport and another band that doesn't look like it is cheap, but it won't be at launch.
Tsk tsk Nintendo.
Thanks for the heads up! Just ordered mine!
I've been wanting one of these badly!
Also picking up a new AC cable, as my current one is slightly beat up after a run-in with the vacuum. -_-
Just bought mine. Luckily, I had a spare charge cable. I was seconds away from importing this stupid thing. This is bad business on Nintendo's part. Words like, crappy come to mind. Among others...
@diastelo: Yeah, right? I'm still waiting for mine from ebay. I paid $21.58 shipped from Japan on 2/14/15. Still waiting...
@rjejr Apple only lasts 18 hours? I have an Armitron that lasts about 2 weeks off the wrist, indefinitely while wearing it due to an ingenious kinetic auto-winding mechanism. The bezel is clear and you can see the gears moving inside, also hear the soothing ticking sound when you place it against your ear. A watch that never needs winding? Now that's a "smart" watch!
Will a N3DS XL with the Hori TPU Duraflexi on it fit in the cradle?
Wow! something from nintendo that isn't sold out already! Amazing!
I have one but I ended up buying a 2nd charger in case the battery gets low while playing, genius Nintendo!
Got 2 Chargers for less than $10.oo last week.
Got 2 of the Cradles yesterday...
I just wish they had them in Red and not just black so they match my New 3DS's
@Jayrcee doubt it.
I still can't believe they only released a white cradle for the regular N3DS and black only for the XL..
Like I'm going to buy a white cradle for my black N3DS.. Ugh Nintendo, get your freaking stuff together.
Just picked one up, $7.00 shipping is a bit much...
These have been available in the UK since launch. I have one. It's pretty cool as it charges the 3DS vertically, so saves quite a bit of desk space.
@CosmoXY - "it works with charger you already have, calm down."
But the "new 3DS doesn' tcom ew/ a charger. So anybody buying a new 3DS and this "charging" cradle still can't chagre their new 3DS. They just should have called it a "cradle" or a "stand". I have 2 stands for my Wii U which came w/ the Wii U Deluxe bundle, one charges, one doesn't. This doesn't charge w/o a separalty sold charger therefore it should be marketed as a stand. If the system itself came w/ a charger to begin w/ then I'd be calm b/c anybody who had a new 3DS would already ave a charger, but since it doesn't...
@Ryu_Niiyama - I was never in the market for an Apple watch - I don't even wear a watch, I have a $4.98 clamshell Tracfone - but I keep up on things, and the Apple watch is a head scratcher to me. I'm sure it will sell, I live in NY, "i" products are ubiquitous, even my very non-techy mother has an iPhone 4, but all I see are flaws - battery life, requires a nearby iPhone to do things - all I see is built in obsolescence and wonder if people will need to buy a new watch when iOS 9 comes out. I'm sure it will sell to the Apple faithful, who are legion, but I don't see it being an industry changer like iPhone or iPad.
Just when I was about to order one from Play-Asia.com. w00t!
@rjejr
I'm in NY as well!
iphone is everywhere and it is sickening!
Very strange that this article popped up yesterday. I had JUST ordered one through eBay for $17.55 with free shipping from Japan. I actually think that it ends up cheaper in the end! I don't know, I'm excited to have this cradle and wanted one ever since I read about them. Going to leave it on my desk at work as I get street passes walking around the city at lunch time.
@No-longer-postin - Maybe you could change your name to "no-longer-iphonin" in protest
Thanks for the head's up on this cradle. I was also looking into getting one from Japan. I just ordered the cradle and just so other people know the $7 shipping charge is a flat fee. I also ordered a red nunchuck to go with my Mario wii mote and the shipping was still $7. So if you have any thing else to order it would save on additional shipping later on.
@rjejr
They also just raised the price of the AC adapter from $10 to $12. I just ordered one last week and know for a fact that I paid $10 for a new one. I hope this bites Nintendo because it is some bs but chances are it won't. What can you do but laugh you know?
@Chicagoway - I wonder what it would cost someone w/ shipping and tax if they ordered the cradle, got it, realized they still needed a plug for their $200 new 3DS XL, then ordered the plug and had to pay shipping and tax again? About $35? Guess that makes me feel better about my Wii U Deluxe purchase now
@rjejr
I never used an iphone, so it wouldn't make sense...
@rjejr
They never sell the actual cord and cradle together. That's nothing new. We've known from the get go you have to buy a charger separately, even though the odds of someone not having one from a DS, DSi, DS Lite, DSi XL, 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL or Wii U gamepad are slim to none.
Anyways, I ordered one of these from Japan before the new 3DS even released for about $22 and it's been worth every cent... $9 is a steal, I couldn't believe they're selling them so cheap- even with the $5 shipping it's a steal, and might as well take advantage of that shipping and toss in a charger for $9.99, so shipping splits between the two for $2.50 each.
@TruenoGT I can't find it on there website what happened?
The cradle is definitely sold out already. Wow that was fast. I bought one this morning and they were still there. Hopefully they get more soon for people who missed out. These inventory issues are getting really annoying.
@JaxonH - I'm really not ok w/ them selling either the system or the "charger" w/o the ability to charge out of the box, regardless of how many people have how many previous chargers laying around. System should come w/ 1, and the charger should be called a cradle, I'm ok w/ that. And we probably shouldn't discuss it any more
You have any experience w/ One Piece: Unlimited World Red? It always looked like fun to me and Gamefly is selling it for $12.99.
@rjejr
No, the series never did appeal to me. I hate their faces and expressions, but I know a fair few like it so idk, it might be good. Especially for $12
@JaxonH - OK thanks. Amazon has the Day 1 Edition new for $20 and I just so happen to have $21.20 in amazon credit which just about covers the NY tax. And Prime (free for a year w/ AmEx, I'm too cheap to pay.)
@rjejr
Woah woah woah, you can get Prime free for a YEAR if you use an AmEx card? I have an AmEx, and you have my attention
@JaxonH - Wait, since when do you care about money?
Sorry, looks like the offer expired. I think it was a limited holiday thing. Spend $1,000 in 3 months and get 1 year of free Prime, a $200 credit and 15 months zero interest. That $200 credit paid for my Christmas PS3 bundle and I'm spending the next 12 months paying off the other $800.
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/amazon/prime-faqs.html
@rjejr
Wow that's a steal! Oh well, at least you took advantage.
And I'm not rich! I just work hard for what I want is all. I do try to be as frugal as possible though because all these games and amiibos add up real fast. Even $5 saved per game would be hundreds of dollars saved every year. Which is why I'm such a strong proponent of GCU through Best Buy. That membership of 20% off, coupled with the $5 back for every $75 spent (reward points are doubled through GCU and using the CC gives extra 5% back, and Elite Plus membership for spending over $3500 in a year gives another 2% and free expedited shipping on any purchase) has proven invaluable this past year.
There's no way I would be willing to pay $64 per game for every game I buy, just wouldn't happen
@JaxonH - Sorry, didn't mean to hit a nerve, just joking w/ ya. Apologies.
I saw the BB GCU deal in the paper on Sunday and was thinking about it again as I let my Gamestop Pro lapse last month and my PS+ in November. Maybe I'll talk it over w/ the kids, who I now need to go put to bed - their moms out "w/ the girls" at TGIF. manana
I hope they're still holding their ashamed of all the lost potential sales over the colored XL ones. A little notice with the press release that a black one was even available would have been nice Nintendo.
So I ordered mine on the 9th with standard shipping. I got confirmation from Nintendo that it shipped that day, and then the tracking shows it will delivered tomorrow. Pretty excited about this. And this has to be the most responsive shipping I have ever seen from the Nintendo Store on anything. I usually expect to wait about two weeks.
Well, out of stock.
@Spartacus3765 No they dont, because the New 3ds xl is a few inches bigger then the 3ds xl, but the normal 3ds wont fit either.
Can't wait for mine. Wow sold out already? I put the order in on Monday. Pretty much as soon as I read it on here! Thanks Nintendolife! It is shipped and will be in my hands hopefully today!
