Loved playing this with my sister when we were little.
I've actually been waiting forever for it to come out on 3DS or WiiU (it's been out in Japan for both for years!) so I'm glad it's coming out finally in some form.
I gatta say, I love Balloon Fight, it's a very underrated game. It's like "Joust," but much better. I love seeing how long I can last, and how high a score I can get. I kinda miss endless retro arcade-like games like that. But unlike those, this one I can last a loooong time in before getting a Game Over.
I don't get the complaints about the "physics," they're pretty well done, and surprisingly precise for an early NES game. You have to know when to flap, and when to tap the directions. It feels like you have more freedom of movement in this game.
@RyanSilberman Yeah, it looks like it's developer is only experienced with cellphone games, and such. It's sad most developers have neglected the WiiU, or even mocked it.
@GreatPlayer I disagree, I think the 3DS Generations looks fine, and worked fine. Looks good in 3D even. Online mode is fun too, despite it's online framerate issues.
We're getting Bubble Bobble, and I already have "River City Ransom," so I got no qualms. It still looks nice, but unlike our's it looks like the controllers are smaller, and can't be connected to a Wii-mote.
It looks like a slight improvement over the previous "Boom" canon games, but regardless I'm quite disapointed this is what we Nintendo fans to get instead of "Sonic Mania." I hate to be "that guy," but there's really no reason that game couldn't of worked on WiiU, considering all the HD 2D games that can work on it. ("Mania" isn't even HD.)
Pretty interesting, but I thought "Game Informer" famously hated the Sonic franchise? Kinda odd to see something somewhat positive from them about it.
I recall, one of their reviewers even stated (in their negative review of Sonic Riders Zero Gravity) "The only thing Sega can do with Sonic that would make me happy is to make him into a nice blue fur coat."
I imagine that would be very painful to wear though, so he's kinda putting hate over his reasoning.
(I don't know , the mindless Sonic hate is just as annoying to me as those who obsess on loving him too much.)
This game is better then the review states. It takes the Balloon Fight formula, and turns it into a full platform game. Plus, the music is great for GB standards.
@ULTRA_BARLOWE
(Zelda CDI guy voice.) Those are illegal, y'know?
Also, Smartphone, X-Box, & the Playstation systems have also been cashing in on old games too. Might as well demonize them too.
Your complaint is also further ironic, as this game literally took years to come to Virtual Console outside of Japan, and taking into account how slow retro Virtual Console releases have been, it's ridiculous to claim that Nintendo is focusing too much on rereleases. Heck, many people on Miiverse & this site are complaining at the lack of focus VC rereleases have had over the years. Nintendo even stated the reason for that is, because THEY ARE focusing on new games. Judging by the new Directs, they've been keeping many games secret.
@bro2dragons $50 isn't cheap for me, but at least that's cheaper then other external hard drives. Nintendo really should've given the WiiU better storage alternatives like the Wii & 3DS had. (like maybe allow use for small Flash drives, which don't work very well for it) That's honestly my only critique/gripe with the WiiU console. Games like SSB alone take up 13GB more then half my console's memory.
@JJtheTexan They take some getting used too. Much like how some didn't like "Zelda 2," because they couldn't get the hang of the simple Punch-out/Urban Champion-style of blocking & attacking. Once you get the hang of it, the games become much easier.
I also like how "Ice Climber" allows you to chose any of the 32 levels (beaten 'em all) so you can always continue from the last level you were on, or try a new one. Not many early NES games had that opinion.
Would love "Skyward Sword," but my WiiU 32GB console doesn't have enough memory for it... (Especially, 'cause I got the SSB & Splatoon edition, those & all my other games take up most the data.) ...I miss memory cards.
In regards to the complaining, I find Yoshi's Story & Star Fox 64 3D tempting. (At this rate we in the USA are never ganna get it as a "Nintendo Selects" game.)
Also, you guys forget there are some full game rewards if you look at the webpage.
I think it's kinda unfair to say SMB2 isn't a true Mario game. Originally, before having the DDP TV Fuji characters, it was said to be considered to use Mario characters originally. Not to mention, it was made by the same people who make the Mario games, (Miyamoto, Tezuka, & Kondo) and Miyamoto regarded it during the SMB anniversary interviews. He even called it one of his favorite Mario games. Some games like 3D World even took inspiration from it.
Sounds coolies, but I already have Sonic the Hedgehog 2, After Burner II, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, and Super Hang-on on my 3DS. I got some of them from the temporary price cut sales the Eshop had. I'd still recommend them to those who don't have them.
The title "Final Stage" worries me that Sega & M2 aren't going to make anymore 3D Classics... Which saddens me 'cause I really wanted "Ristar," and other games for 3DS.
@Onion DK & DK Jr. were pretty popular, I think they got a 6 on the site, which isn't bad. Surprisingly, they did give "Wrecking Crew," and "Clu Clu Land" good scores/reviews. Balloon Fight & Ice Climber got pretty low ones though, which is a shame 'cause I thought they were pretty good.
@the101 Agreed, I get sick of how anytime ANY religious person does or says something wrong, or stupid suddenly, we're all "evil mindless cultists." (I've seen ignorant people of every faith, or no faith, even atheists) I also notice irony, that the same people who do this, are the same ones for "political-correctness," and such.
I'm a christian, I don't even follow bishops. (That's more of a "Catholic" thing, but regardless many Catholics, especially if they're Pokémon fans would never agree with this bishop.)
@BlatantlyHeroic At least some understand, rather then generalize anyone different from themselves.
I actually liked this game as a kid, and having picked it up on WiiU, I got to say it's not that bad. I enjoyed it's unique pseudo point and click game, and practically everything in the environment is interactive. Even doing things during different animations can yield different results, so there's some good humor, and amusing things to do. (Even my nephew enjoyed the game and being sadistic to Pac Man.) Plus, I like how it's one of the earliest games to pull a game within a game, with the original Pac Man & Mrs. Pac Man. And honestly, they're better recreations, then the GBA ones the critic recommended getting instead. (I prefer being able to see the whole screen.)
I honestly think the critics of this site only prefer mainstream old-school VC games that are already popular. I rarely see them give any obscure ones good reviews.
@bezerker99 I do actually. I liked it when I was a kid, and I honestly don't get the hate for it. Frankly, I'm probably the only one looking more forward to Pac Man 2, then Twilight Princess. (Still have the GameCube version.)
Frankly, I don't get the drama, nor the low/middle scores for Wild Gunman, and Hogan's Ally, as they're every bit as good as Duck Hunt IMO. (Which got a pretty generous score in comparison, as it offers just as much gameplay as they do.) Bought both, and I don't regret it.
I think the Zapper games need more love, and I hope to see "Gumshoe" eventually too.
@OneBagTravel Yeah, I miss old-school arcades... They seem almost dead in America. We need games like this here to, in order to bring back interest in arcades. I think it looks cool.
@6ch6ris6 Boy, i'd hate to see what you think of Bugs Bunny, Disney, or TMNT. Frankly, I think if they were just humans or alien-humans, I think it would just look like practically every other space shooter out there. I think the "space animal people" make it more unique.
Still, these cosplays are good. Slippy is oddly pretty. lol
After playing, and reading this, I got to say I'm thankful for the M2 team's dedication. Remaking these classic games in 3D is not as easy as some would assume.
Here's hopin' we see "Streets of Rage 3" in a year.
Is it me, or is 3DS's Virtual Console kinda dead now? Heck in Japan they haven't updated it sense after getting DKL3, and the "Pokemon Trading Card" game last year.
Not to mention Japan got "Bubble Bobble," "Shadowgate," "Kung-Fu Heroes," "Sonic Advance," and many good VC games we have yet to get here. I think NOA should outsource the VC's development to another company if they can't handle it.
@Caryslan My God, you really hit the nail on the head here on how I feel they're treating the VC service. I love Nintendo, but as you said they just don't seem to care about the Virtual Console anymore. Heck, Japan they have more VC games then us. (Including for 3DS, and their 3DS VC hasn't updated hardly for a year nearly, aside from adding "Pokemon Trading Card game.")
Sega may have a bad reputation with new games, but you're right they're great at remaking/porting their old games. (Though, technically, you should give M2 the credit for remaking the old Sega games in 3D)
Ever played any of the Game Gear Virtual Console titles on 3DS? They have screen options, custom button options, multiple frame options, even multiplayer game link-up options. Many things the NES & Gameboy games on VC DON'T have, and should have. (And they don't even take up to many memory blocks like some VC games do. How they cram all those features in, is amazing.) Sega seems to put more effort in their remakes/rereleases then Nintendo does.
If Nintendo's not going to do anything with VC hardly, they should just outsource them to Sega, M2, or somebody else and let them handle the VC service for them.
Didn't Minecraft's creator make a few jokular remarks about the WiiU kinda implying he doesn't care for it?
That's why there's no Minecraft on WiiU, guys. Simple as that. I really hate how alot of game developers aren't taking the WiiU as seriously as the other consoles, or are afraid of the controller.
EA's Bob Summerwill even insulted Nintendo fans, saying we're "bad revenue" for third party companies, and stated we only buy Mario & Zelda games. (Which is false, 'cause many games in the top 10 selling lists for the Eshop, WiiU, Wii, 3DS, and DS are third-party titles.) I think third-party companies in general are just afraid of Nintendo, they've been that way sense the N64 days.
I think this is one of the reasons I refuse to support cellphone gaming honestly. (I prefer gaming with sticks, and buttons. Maybe touchscreen on occasion, depending on the game.) Also, the idea that only kids play 3DS is very ignorant, and I get sick of the mentality that both close-minded gamers, and third-party developers have that Nintendo fans are only children, or old people who only bought a Wii for "Wii Sports." (It's bad enough EA believes that, and that Bob Summerwill bluntly, and rudely stated the Nintendo-fans market isn't "worth it," claiming all we buy is "Mario & Zelda," which is further ironic/ignorant on his part.)
It's really hard to be a Nintendo-fan sometimes, when the third-party developers don't take their market/customers seriously. Also, ironically, "Fantasy Life" doesn't even look like a game most adults with cellphones would play.
I hate to sound spiteful, but I kinda hope it doesn't sell too well on the cellphone market, just to show them the cellphone/adult market alone isn't always the way to go, and that there's still a future for dedicated-handheld game systems, and that Nintendo isn't a bad market. I'll take 3DS over a clumbsy cellphone any day.
@Caryslan Well, it's not like the 3DS is "failing," in fact ironically, it's been extremely successful lately. So I don't get why some are assuming cellphones, and such are going to replace Nintendo systems, or are the "wave of the future." Plus most cellphone games are quite simplistic, short games, while 3DS games are practically console-quality. Plus, honestly, I don't like gaming on a cellphone, it's easier on a 3DS or PSP.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Agreed, though to be fair some Square/Enix-owned games like Final Fantasy, and "Bubble Bobble" (yes they own that now) were released in Japan for WiiU & 3DS VC.
They have yet to release them in other countries though... (Shame I've been waiting over a year, and a half for "Bubble Bobble")
I never had MKDS, so I might consider giving it a shot anyways. Still, while I can forgive the lack of online mode, the lack of close-multiplayer, is one of the reasons I don't think DS & GBA games work well on WiiU. TV games can only have one, or two screens on it at a time. (Taking the WiiU game pad into account.) And it might be difficult to emulate 2 or 4 simultaneously running DS/GBA systems all at the same time, and it'd be difficult to fit them all on one, or two screens.
Considering 3DS NES & Game Gear games have multiplayer, it'd be easier to recreate/emulate the multiplayer feature on 3DS, as it's a portable like the GBA & DS originally were offering multiple screens/systems, so it'd be easier to emulate their multiplayer on them.
I really don't know what Nintendo was thinking having portable games on a console. Seems like just something they did sense they couldn't get GameCube games to work on WiiU's VC, and were desperate to have new consoles for it.
I hate to complain, (as I always wanted to play that game, and it's nice it's getting a rerelease) I still don't understand the logic of having DS VC games on WiiU, instead of 3DS. Seems like they're giving the WiiU VC all the "new" VC consoles/games now.
They better release more Game Gear games, or Turbograf-X, or something for 3DS. Feels like they're running out of Gameboy games for it.
Now I regret getting NewSMB2 for 600 coins, instead of "Star Fox 64 3D." (This is just like when I got "Kirby's Super Star" from Club Nintendo, shortly before they announced the game is included in "Kirby's Dream Collection.) None of the other games interest me much, besides "Yoshi's New Island," and "NES Ultimate Remix." I don't have a WiiU yet, so I can't get the WiiU games. (Anyone got enough coins for Star Fox 64 3D? I might consider a trade. Also, I'm American, so Euro' download codes won't work for me.)
Wish they just offered us all the games they already offered. They really limited our choices here.
Eeeehhhh... I should've known. Nintendo is very stingy with their properties, and will rarely let anyone use them for anything. They even turned down Archie Comics' offers to do a comic series based on their properties. (You can find images of the pitch online.) Which is a shame, 'cause Archie does a good job on Megaman & their Sonic comics.
Honestly, I'm a li'l disapointed, and further disapointed to see close-minded Nintendo fans in the comments HAPPY that it isn't real. I know game movies, and such media haven't worked well in the past, but consider this. People who played those video games as children/teens, are now in the entertainment industry, and know more about the series then the people back in the late '80s who made "Captain N," and such.
So honestly, i think now is a better time for something like that to happen. In fact, the people who make the Megaman & Sonic comics were fans of those series in their childhood, and I feel they do a good job on them, and know alot about said franchises.
Heck, Sonic got a new TV show (that's actually pretty amusing) and Mario hasn't had a new show sense 1991. (Considering Sega has allowed the official Sonic comic to last over 20 years tells me that's one thing they have Nintendo kinda "beat" in. They're not afraid to explore other media with their characters, or license things.) I wish Nintendo wasn't so stingy/overprotective of it's properties sometimes.
@AugustusOxy At this point, I'd be happy to get SNES games even in 2D for 3DS... Same with GBA games, but sense both are on WiiU's VC instead the liklihood of 3DS getting those are about as high as WiiU getting Gameboy games. (Which work fine on the 3DS, as they were handheld games originally. I'm still baffled GBA games are only for WiiU.)
Though, sense "Star Fox" (the original one) has yet to get a VC rerelease, I would love it if Nintendo outsourced it to Q-Games, Akira, or M2, or something to remake it as a "3D Classic" for 3DS's Eshop. I would even pay 10 bucks for it. Especially, if it had some new options added, like a "score attack" (level select) feature, save feature, and such.
Another game i'd like to see as a "3D Classic," is "Wario Land VB," the Virtual Boy Wario Land game. It's often said to be the best VB game. Even if it's only in black & white, (or black and red) with no color options, it'd be great to have, and see in 3D.
@Vineleaf Agreed, it's sad that an actual portable device dedicated to gaming like the 3DS keeps missing out on video game awards, while mediocre cellphone/tablet games are the only ones being regarded. Seems awfully biased to me.
You'd think they'd at least give SSB for 3DS at least one nomination. Despite not featuring all the modes, and features the WiiU version had, the 3DS version was quite impressive, has some of it's own unique nice touches, and did a good job translating the SSB formula to a handheld state. Before playing it, I never imagined SSB could "work" for a handheld, but surprisingly it does.
@mike_intv I guess "family game" means a game anyone can play, but I don't really see many parents who play "Minecraft" with their kids. "Minecraft" is more of a single-player game, so I can't really see it being something the "whole family" can get together, and play.
Also, honestly, while Minecraft looks like a neat "sandbox"-style game, I feel it's very overrated, and I never understood the big deal with it.
Plus, it's kinda hard for me to want to play the game after it's creator intentionally skipped the Nintendo systems, when releasing it on multi-consoles... (I really hate it when game creators do that... Release games for every system possible, except the Nintendo ones, they've been doing that with some games sense the SuperNES days... It always feels like not only a middle-finger to Nintendo, but Nintendo fans to. Also, it's not like the WiiU isn't "powerful" enough to handle it. A game that uses only like 8 polygons on each character...)
That wouldn't of bothered me as much, if the creator of it, didn't make factious remarks about the WiiU which also kinda bugged me. Even if they weren't as harsh as Bob Summerwill's. I especially, didn't like that remark, "“Don’t worry Nintendo fans, I love both games for the Wii U, and I’m really looking forward to the third one in 2015!” (Ironically, according to Wikipedia, WiiU actually has more games then the PS4, and X-Box One...)
Also, what makes it worse was Takahashi of Nintendo http://nintendoeverything.com/miyamoto-and-takahashi-comment-on-minecraft/ actually expressed interest in bringing Minecraft to WiiU & 3DS, in order to help the game become more popular in Japan. (Because apparently, it's not as hugely popular there, as it is in North America, and Europe.)
I hate to sound butthurt, and fanboy-ish, but it's really hard for me to want to play a game by somebody who openly mocks us Nintendo-fans like that after not release their game on said system. (Same goes for EA's Bob Summerwill for saying we only buy "Mario & Zelda," and that we're not as "important" a market as mobile phones...)
Loved this game as a kid, Me, and my sister had alot of fun playing it. Hope it comes to the USA to, and maybe the 3DS, as well. (Sense I don't have a WiiU yet.)

Not to mention Japan got "Bubble Bobble," "Shadowgate," "Kung-Fu Heroes," "Sonic Advance," and many good VC games we have yet to get here. I think NOA should outsource the VC's development to another company if they can't handle it.
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th July (North America)
@Caryslan
My God, you really hit the nail on the head here on how I feel they're treating the VC service.
Re: Mojang is Still Open to Bringing Minecraft to Nintendo Systems
Re: Akihiro Hino on Why Fantasy Life 2 is Not Coming to the 3DS
Re: Fantasy Life 2 Is Skipping 3DS In Favour Of Smartphones
@Caryslan Well, it's not like the 3DS is "failing," in fact ironically, it's been extremely successful lately. So I don't get why some are assuming cellphones, and such are going to replace Nintendo systems, or are the "wave of the future." Plus most cellphone games are quite simplistic, short games, while 3DS games are practically console-quality.
Plus, honestly, I don't like gaming on a cellphone, it's easier on a 3DS or PSP.
Re: Poll: Which Characters Do You Want to Win the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot?
Out of the "returning" characters Wolf O'Donnel, sense as Sakurai said the Ice Climbers wouldn't work well on the 3DS.
Out of "new" ones, I'd say Shantae, or Banjo with Kazooie.
Re: Review: Mario Kart DS (Wii U eShop / DS)
@Angelic_Lapras_King Agreed, though to be fair some Square/Enix-owned games like Final Fantasy, and "Bubble Bobble" (yes they own that now) were released in Japan for WiiU & 3DS VC.
They have yet to release them in other countries though... (Shame I've been waiting over a year, and a half for "Bubble Bobble")
Re: Review: Mario Kart DS (Wii U eShop / DS)
Re: Video: WarioWare Touched! Arrives On Wii U Virtual Console
Re: Nintendo Reveals the Final Club Nintendo Elite Rewards
Now I regret getting NewSMB2 for 600 coins, instead of "Star Fox 64 3D." (This is just like when I got "Kirby's Super Star" from Club Nintendo, shortly before they announced the game is included in "Kirby's Dream Collection.)
None of the other games interest me much, besides "Yoshi's New Island," and "NES Ultimate Remix." I don't have a WiiU yet, so I can't get the WiiU games.
(Anyone got enough coins for Star Fox 64 3D? I might consider a trade. Also, I'm American, so Euro' download codes won't work for me.)
Wish they just offered us all the games they already offered. They really limited our choices here.
Re: Microsoft Once Had Some Pretty Wild Ideas, Including Making Xbox Free And Buying Nintendo
Microsoft even considering trying to buy-off Nintendo, or even Sega creeps me out... I know it won't happen anytime soon, but yeesh...
Also, as stated already look what happened to Rare.
Re: Two Tribes’ Toki Tori Remake is Coming to the 3DS eShop
@accc That's cool, though now I can't decide if I should get the VC 3DS game, or wait for this one to come out instead now.
Re: Two Tribes’ Toki Tori Remake is Coming to the 3DS eShop
Oh coolies! Is it a remake of the GBColor game, or is it a different one?
Re: Nintendo Download: 26th March (North America)
Would consider "Namco Museum" if it was on 3DS instead.
Re: Nintendo Boss Satoru Iwata Warns Not To Hold Your Breath For That Netflix Zelda Series
Re: Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Ways To Play"
Does this mean I shouldn't get a WiiU?
It's kinda early for them to make a new system, I hope it's not a WiiU replacement.
Re: Video: What If Super Mario World Was A 3D Classic?
Re: Mario Kart 8 Misses Out at BAFTA Game Awards, Though Indie Releases Earn the Spotlight
Re: Two Tribes Co-Founder Doesn't Think He Would Have Bought His Own Game
Awwww, that's a shame, "Toki Tori" needs more love. I really want to get it once I get a WiiU.
Re: Review: Kung-Fu Heroes (Wii U eShop / NES)
Loved this game as a kid, Me, and my sister had alot of fun playing it. Hope it comes to the USA to, and maybe the 3DS, as well. (Sense I don't have a WiiU yet.)
