While the absence of a number of major multi-platform franchises and IPs from Nintendo hardware can be easily explained, the fact that Minecraft has never come to the Wii U or 3DS remains surprising. While technical limitations would hold a 3DS version back to being a lighter / smart device port, the Wii U would be a great home for the sandbox game, especially with the GamePad's ability to offer physical and touch screen controls to deliver the best of console and tablet-style approaches.
With Mojang's global phenomenon skipping Nintendo hardware we've seen smaller developers attempt to fill the gap. Yet, if Mojang COO Vu Bui is to be believed, there's still an appetite within the company - despite its acquisition by Microsoft - to expand to more platforms.
Speaking to MCV, Bui was clear that Nintendo fans shouldn't completely give up hope yet.
If I had my way, we'd be on everything.
We want to continue to be available to all players, and that means being on new platforms because everyone uses something different.
...I've never heard a reason why we haven't ended up on Wii U or 3DS. It just hasn't happened yet.
Of course, positive noises have been made in the past regarding Minecraft and Nintendo hardware, yet with different versions of the title continuing to sell in significant numbers it would still - even after its prolonged absence - be a welcome arrival.
Time will tell whether Minecraft arrives in some form on Wii U, 3DS or even NX.

Pretty strange comment, to leave the possibility open. I thought with Microsoft owning them it would be out of the question entirely.
I wouldn't hold my breath about this. Nice if it was, but I'm not counting on it. Nintendo won't want to do business with Microsoft on this level. I suspect it's why we won't see blu-ray players on future consoles since Sony has such a high-investment in it.
If a COO of the company can't 'have their way', then who can? Someone at Mojang (or perhaps Notch) was into Nintendo games - at least enough to have a Donkey Kong reference in the game.
I'll believe it when I see it. Still it would be a definite purchase for me on Wii U and 3DS if it happens. The use of standard controls with optional touchscreen inventory and gyroscope assisted controls (ala Splatoon) would be great. Mario or other Nintendo themed add-on worlds would be nice. Still I would assume that past Console sales would be the reason why Wii U hasn't received Minecraft.
@Wouwter The new Microsoft under Ballmer and Nadella has been very open to cross-platform applications and services compared to Apple and Google.
I still don't understand what's interesting about Minecraft, but it would be nice to see it come to the Wii U or NX for those who are interested, especially given how strong the sales for the game are after all this time.
I agree that having the gamepad as an inventory screen would be brilliant for a game of this style.
The Wii U is taylor made for Minecraft, buts it time was about 2 and a half years ago. Minecraft should have been an eShop launch title (or been there as soon as the Xbox exclusivity was up). at this point, you can play it on pretty much everything... i think my toaster runs a port of it. Anyone who wanted to play this has access to it somehwere else. It's just too late to matter.
Microsoft seems to see Minecraft as a platform and the cat is already out of the bag as far as keeping it exclusive to Xbox or Windows or something. Microsoft could never remove a game like that from platforms without tremendous backlash. Microsoft now views certain types of its software as, like I said, a platform that exists inside of others (think Office on iPad before its own tablets, for instance) and I think that's the idea of Minecraft. It should be everywhere.
All that said, I'd target NX if I were them.
Right now, the mobile version of Minecraft is ramping up to replace the Java version (PC/Mac) for better portability between platforms, so the timing might be nice for NX.
It took long after Mojang was purchased by Microsoft for someone to express interest
@the-madprofessor Think about a bucket of Legos that never run empty, & float in the air. I've heard there's also "gameplay" & "hostile mobs" but I've never bothered to leave Creative Mode. I've been building on the same map since 2011.
I don't see any non-hardware reasons why there is no minecraft for 3DS. There was Viva Pinata for DS so it wouldn't be first time.
THEN DO IT!!!! It would work beautifully on the Wii U!
I'd definently get it.
I'm over Minecraft, LEGO Worlds is the future
Wii U? Likely not.
I believe the reason why it's on PS4 is because it was already in development before Microsoft acquired them, so perhaps as part of the deal, they may have requested that they continue with it.
3DS? IMO, it's a matter of if it can run it. From what I understand, Microsoft has no problem putting their games on Nintendo's or Sony's handhelds because they don't have a handheld of their own to compete with them. It's just not something they eager to pursue.
This is not to say the Wii U couldn't run it. In fact, it may be perfect for it because of the Gamepad, but because Microsoft owns the IP and have a competing console, that's why it's unlikely imo.
@Wouwter
They already have it on every other platform you could imagine. Nintendo systems are no more of a stretch.
I have Cube Life, so I'll definitely get Minecraft if it comes to the Wii U.
Hard to believe Nintendo platforms were never discussed. Never. Discussed. Just hard to believe.
It could happen, Microsoft does own them, but Sony's consoles have the game. Better late then nkt getting the game at all
"If you build it, they will xome..."
@icedude545 You mean that Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Smash Wii U, and Splatoon didn't already make people dust off their Wii U? Come on, dude.
Won't happen for the Wii U. But we are lucky to have Cube Life
@Wouwter Actually Microsoft is much more open to other platforms. Maybe the reason Minecraft may appear on Nintendo platform is just because Microsoft own it now.
The new Microsoft is open to all platforms, which means this could still happen.
Clearly Nintendo saying no...
Nintendo could do with making this happen. It's taking away a lot of their core fanbase I.e. children
I wonder why they haven't put it on Wii U yet. From what he's saying, it sounds like they've just been too busy on higher priority things.
@Grumblevolcano Seriously doubt it. They let Cube Life in.
@the-madprofessor When it comes to mobile, they kind of have to be open. Their own platform is just not doing as well as Apple's or Google's. Ignoring them wouldn't be a smart move.
It sure would be an uneasy situation for Nintendo to let Microsoft have potentially the most popular game on their system. It would give Microsoft a lot of leeway in the next generation race. I can see why they would say no for long term reasons. Most comments here are thinking short term junkie fixes lol.
The 3DS wouldn't be able to handle Minecraft? Really?
@GrailUK But why would that matter if Nintendo is so focused on Sony and Microsoft "not being competitors".
@Grumblevolcano I know right. We are swimming through a turbulent corporate sea of spin. Please wear a life jacket.
The Wii U would be my preferred system to play Minecraft on, so it really is a shame it hasn't arrived yet. I am hopeful that it will arrive on a Nintendo platform in the future, but I honestly wish it would come to the Wii U before the NX since I'm not planning on getting the NX when it comes out. (At launch at least.)
I would so totally play MineCraft if I could play it on the GamePad only.
@rjejr
Are your kids still addicted to this? Hopefully Mario Maker will be a good alternative for them.
Happy Birthday #11!!!!!11!
@Moon COO is only one cog of the machine... They do not make any decisions (company-wide) without the boards approval. Trust me, you do not want COO' s to do whatever they want. They are not good people, much less nice. Should you find a kind and loving boardroom officer, I'll find you six more that will scare you!
I wonder what he thinks of these dozen or so generic versions that seem to be on the eshop
I got Cube Life last week and I must say the gamepad is the only way to play this type of game aside from pc but I dont play those. Anyone who wants a MC-esque game on wii u should pony up 6 bucks for Cube Life!
I bet they didn't see going for Wii U as viable business wise. Maybe on NX then.
even thought that Microsoft bought mojang, i still want minecraft on be on wii u, 3ds or NX
why don't mojany take the money that microsoft payed and shoved it into mircosoft [donkey] !
I expected this, mojong did the sa!e with 360 they waited and watched to see how well the clones did, obviously things are a little different now but I'm sure they are paying attention to cubelife and Ucraft. I would imagine they'll also keep tracks on terrira's Nintendo sales
I don't understand this. If Microsoft owns Mojang, then how can they make games for the competitors? That's like Rare still has a chance to make games for Nintendo.
I would only play it on 3DS. Why would I play Minecraft on a consolewhen I can play the obviously more superior and up to date version on PC?
@DJKeens Thing is, 7 Days is survival, Minecraft is sandbox. I haven't played Minecraft survival for about a year, and yet I play the game ALOT. There's so much more than survival and creative in Minecraft nowadays.
I do find it pretty irritating how Minecraft still hasn't made it's way to Nintendo systems, despite multiple statements from Mojang about not being opposed to it. I really feel the Wii U could be the definitive console version (there's no version that's ever gonna be better than PC version), what with the dual screens being used for crafting/inventory and such. Unfortunately, I still don't really see them going through with it.
I'd been waiting for these for log time. Hope it happens.!
Didn't Minecraft's creator make a few jokular remarks about the WiiU kinda implying he doesn't care for it?
That's why there's no Minecraft on WiiU, guys. Simple as that. I really hate how alot of game developers aren't taking the WiiU as seriously as the other consoles, or are afraid of the controller.
EA's Bob Summerwill even insulted Nintendo fans, saying we're "bad revenue" for third party companies, and stated we only buy Mario & Zelda games. (Which is false, 'cause many games in the top 10 selling lists for the Eshop, WiiU, Wii, 3DS, and DS are third-party titles.) I think third-party companies in general are just afraid of Nintendo, they've been that way sense the N64 days.
well the current clone is doing quite well and seems very ambitious with updates. i know people would love the original but if cypronia keeps it up things will be great
@Artwark its like how Microsoft office is on Mac and mobile. MS is treating Minecraft as a service. They know they make more money from Minecraft on multiple systens than people buying Xbox to play Minecraft.
THE CHANCE OF STEVE IN SMASH HAVE RISEN!!
...Uh-Oh.
I already have it on PS4 and iPad but WHO CARES?!
@sinalefa - My 1 son is a complete Minecraft addict - he knows all the versions and all the mods and all the books, no tablet version though, but PS3 and PC keep him busy enough. My other son is more of a normal player, a litle bit here and there. For $20 we'd probably get a Wii U version.
If it has a good use for the GamePad (like a crafting bench), and had some cool Nintendo exclusives, I guess I would buy it... AGAIN.
So now I will have it for my PC, my PS4 and my Wii U.
3DS I can understand, Wii U is a total natural fit though. Even if it's a minority console, I feel like putting Minecraft on Nintendo Platforms would be a clever way to reach new audiences. After all, it's no secret Creeper shirts and foam pickaxes make a fair chunk of Mojang's revenue. One twenty dollar payment isn't their endgame.
@MasterGraveheart Don't blame Sony - Nintendo have never been interested in multimedia entertainment. Even DVD support was cut from Wii..
