Sega's line of 3D Classics has gone down a storm with 3DS owners thanks to a cunning combination of superb emulation, neat extras and - of course - killer games.
While the titles have been released individually on the eShop, Sega has also published collections at retail, and the next helping - the third to arrive in Japan - is due to launch on December 22nd.
This new helping will showcase Sonic the Hedgehog 2, After Burner II, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, and Super Hang On, but a bonus game will also be included.
The game in question has been picked based on votes submitted by owners of the previous retail versions, and while Sega hasn't said what it is yet - that news will be coming in a future issue of Famitsu - it has listed the rest of the top five:
- ??? (mystery game, will be in the third Sega 3D Classics Collection)
- Virtua Racing
- OutRunners
- Gain Ground
- Wing War
While this is Japan's third Sega classics collection - following on from Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives and Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2 - we've only had one pack in the west so far: Sega 3D Classics Collection. It came out in North America on April 26th, and is due to arrive in Europe on November 4th.
What do you think the mystery game will be, and do you think we'll see this collection in the west? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Im so early
SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES PLS
Fukkoko good news.
Not to sound cynical but I suspect the winning game will be one that's easy for them to emulate rather than something exciting like Virtua Racing. I hope I'm wrong, I'd love to see Scud Race or Daytona 2 finally get a home release!
OUTRUNNERS!!!!!! YES just YES
Wonder what is the title for that number 1 on the list... :confuse:
It's a shame Virtua Racing never won the vote, that would have looked outstanding in 3D.
Okay I'm confused. This is #3, and so far I was aware that only #1 existed so where is number #2, or are they using the same ridiculous numbering madness on these as they did the Final Fantasy series?!
@Kiyata Vol 1 never got released outside of Japan. Simple
A finished version of Sonic extreme. Just for sh*ts and giggles.
Can't we just get a third wave of individual 3D Genesis games, and have one of them be Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
I hope its Phantasy Star 1 or 2 in 3D!
Golden axe
@nintendomasterr Phantasy Star 1-4 would be so good. I'm partial to 2 and 4 myself. I have them for VC on the Wii. I played through 2 again spent over 100 hours trying to have Shir in my party at the end. My levels were at 88 and the game froze right before I went to face the final boss. I cry foul. I also cry foul when sony removed the Sega series on the vita when it had 1-3.
The collection we got in the West is the double pack that was released in Japan, so we basically got the two collections in one. We'll hopefully get a second collection containing the Japanese 3rd and 4th collection.
I hope this means we still have a chance of seeing #1 released in the West! Awesome news!
It'd be very cool if they went completely insane and released a huge Saturn or Dreamcast game like Burning Rangers or Skies of Arcadia as the fifth. I do love Gain Ground, though.
If there is a God it will be Daytona 2...but there isn't so it will be Ecco the Dolphin instead.
Highly doubt it's Sonic 3, as they'd have that on the front cover, not hidden away! I wish it were, though.
I lose track of what's been done, but I'd be happy with Golden Axe.
@GrailUK Ecco was already in Vol. 1, so let your hopes be restored a little bit.
@Nico87 We got Vol. 2 only, not the Double Pack (which is just a box set containing the Game Cards for 1&2 rather than a single Card containing both collections, somewhat sadly). That means that Vol. 1 has yet to be released outside of Japan. Here's what's in Vol. 1: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_3D_Fukkoku_Archives
It's probably Virtua Fighter.
Looks like 3 is shaping up well
Gain Ground didn't make it I'm so glad I have it on PS3 as that game is a blast.
I'd vote for Virtual racing. Also I never heard of Wing war
@Gauchorino Ah, I see, my bad then. That's too bad, would really like to play Streets of Rage. Guess I'll have to settle for some digital.
SONIC 3(D) & KNUCKLES HYPE
(though Virtua Racing would be kind of nice as well)
Let ol Death Adder finally out of the arcade!
It will almost certainly be a sprite-based game just like every other 3D Classics title to date (that I'm aware of); it would be too crazy (in a good but totally unlikely way) if they've actually gone and made one of the proper 3D games for this (like just imagine how cool it would be if it were something like Sega Rally Championship ).
Does anyone have any knowledge of this pole and what the choices where; what game might have won?
Fingers crossed for "Phantasy Star IV".
I played OUT RUNNERS almost every time I went to the arcade. So that or VIRTUA RACING would be awesome.
Please be Sonic CD. Yeah, I know all about Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but frankly, once I gave the Android port a spin - pun not intended - with my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, I couldn't put that game down. Sadly, one day I had to uninstall it because Whatsapp
loves to clog up all my phone's spare memorycouldn't be moved to the SD card and neither could the game, but the desire for a(nother) portable Sonic CD never really went away. And hey, the collection is called Sega 3D Classics Collection - it never says anything about being a Genesis 3D Classics Collection.
Personally, I would most like the proper Bare Knuckle 3, followed by the coin-op version of Golden Axe. There are also some 32-bit games I'd like, but I'm tempering my expectations here and assuming they'll be 16-bit.
Zombies Ate my neighbors would be a great 3D remake
@bitleman that would be amazing. But unlikely, I think.
And with my luck, a port of OutRunners would be like a monkey's paw thing and it would be the Megadrive version.
Or even Road Rash.... Nothing better than knocking your opponents off their motorcycles
It's gotta be Sonic 3, if its based on fan votes. If that is the case, I'd hope they'd go all out and give us Sonic 3 and Knuckles, completing the Genesis core-Sonic titles turned 3D (excluding Sonic CD of course).
@wolvesboy - I'm pretty certain OutRunner and Virtua Racing didn't make the cut. That was the polling results, and they weren't #1...
I'm guessing Virtua Fighter.
Though if they wanted to end on a meme, GAME OVER YEAH.
NO WAY! We're never going to get this over in Europe are we!?
@Nico87 No problem at all. I've been painstakingly holding out on buying any of the games individually, myself, for the slim chance that Vol. 1 eventually reaches Western shores. Perhaps if "Vol. 2" sells well in Europe, it will!
Sounds coolies, but I already have Sonic the Hedgehog 2, After Burner II, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, and Super Hang-on on my 3DS. I got some of them from the temporary price cut sales the Eshop had. I'd still recommend them to those who don't have them.
The title "Final Stage" worries me that Sega & M2 aren't going to make anymore 3D Classics... Which saddens me 'cause I really wanted "Ristar," and other games for 3DS.
@Beau_Skunk Yeah, I would've liked to have seen them branch out in genre a little. I love the idea of 3D Classics, but these action/arcade titles just don't interest me. Would've liked to have seen some love for Phantasy Star or something from the SEGA Sports stable (pending licensing issues).
I expect they'll move on to the NX, though. No way will they give up this emulator and the money these titles brought!
Ristar would've been cool too though; not personally a fan (haven't honestly played it much), but it sure beats another re-release of Sonic 2
@Nico87 Incorrect. Japan had things like Shinobi III in their first collection. This is no fused collection.
Also people, S3&K always seems marred by issues regarding music rights. There seems to be no real issues with emulations, but the 3D Classics and the Taxman/Stealth releases are more than simple emulations or ports. It's not so simple.
Beyond Oasis!
Or Comix Zone.
Or Vectorman.
It's probably Shining Force. I hope it is, as i'd love to be able to play Shining Force on the go. Who knows, maybe we'll someday get all of 3 in North America...
I would totally buy this if it came to the West!
@TruenoGT Yep,it's a shame.I had it on 32x and Saturn and while impressive at the time they couldn't match the arcade. The Dreamcast could have probably gave us an arcade perfect port but it wasn't to be.I was just watching video of the arcade version a few weeks ago,it still looks great today.Really clean and easy on the eye, holds up well compared to most of the other racers or 3D games in general from this period.
So they're going to include a game that doesn't exist yet as a standalone title in the eShop?
And depending on the votes they're going to program it in time for December 22nd? What would be the point in making all 5 and include just one?
I have understood it wrongly, I guess, or they're just going to add one of the already existing games.
Anyway, I'd like the Sega Fukkoku Archives 1 to get a Western release, but it seems that we'll only get the second. The fact that we got the second first... I'm afraid it means that we won't get the first later.
Just for the record, NintendoLife is wrong. It's 4 unknown titles, not just 1. And the latest issue of Famitsu already has confirmed that the first one is Turbo Outrun (The arcade version, naturally).
The next reveal will be during the Tokyo Game Show, and the hint is "universe". Anyone have any guesses?
It will be some classic arcade game or Mega Drive game.
Ahh yes, it was Turbo Outrun and it was already revealed now. Three other unknown not yet revealed games will come as well.
I'm hoping Golden Axe arcade version. That hasn't been done yet and definitely has to be done. It would look glorious in 3D.
Same also for Comix Zone.
@bitleman Highly doubt that it'll be Virtua Fighter. All the 3D Classics confirmed so far are available on the Nintendo eShop as individual games. Virtua Fighter doesn't fit in that category.
@GoneFishin Phantasy Star?
Shining in the Darkness would be 3d perfection
