If you have fond memories of the Shaq Fu games of the 16-bit era, then you are in luck. Shaq is back with Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn which is headed to Nintendo Switch at retail in Spring this year.
Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is an intense, action-packed beat ‘em up which sees players take on the role of the unstoppable Shaquille O’Neal as he fights his way through the hordes of hell (and Hollywood). Master devastating combos, battle outlandish celebrity bosses and take on all comers with an array of weapons, including katanas, shuriken and baseball bats. Channel Shaq’s alter egos, Big Daddy O and Big Diesel, in epic battles in the successor to the worst game ever on a mission to restore Shaq’s legacy.
Saber CEO Matt Karch excitedly said on the impending release:
"We know diehard fans have been waiting eagerly to experience the hard-hitting action of this new take on Shaq Fu, and we’re excited to team up with Wired Productions to get the game physically into the hands of players this spring."
Not to be left out Leo Zullo, Managing Director at Wired Productions, commented:
"Shaq Fu has an incredible legacy in the history of video games, and we’re delighted to be part of the team shooting to earn Shaq his place in the future of video games."
Of course, anyone who purchased NBA Playgrounds on Nintendo Switch prior to June 10, 2017, will receive a free copy of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn upon release by way of an apology for its botched launch. Take a look at the trailer above and let us know if you plan to pick this up in Spring with a comment below.

The site's having some serious issues.
I'm not particularly excited for the game but free is my favourite price so I'll be downloading it at the very least.
I like Shaq and I like Fu but history has proven that trying to fuse the two creates an unholy bond.
Doubt I would buy this but I'm looking forward to my free copy thanks to the NBA Playgrounds thing.
How does this whole "free transaction" thing work anyways? Any idea how this works?
Oh wow...Switch is getting it's GOTY! And it's just March! And some people will get it for free!!!

I happen to be one of the early bird owners for NBA Playgrounds, so I'll be getting my Shaq Fu copy for free. Hopefully that game will make me feel better after how disgusting NBA was for me, even though I won't expect Shaq Fu to be any good.
Glad I get mine for free
@Biff_ARMStrong eShop has already seen personal discounts based on ownership of other titles; I guess this would just show up as a 100% one.
@StephenYap3 Same for me. I only wanted to try it cuz there were not that many games out back then. Honestly I did not like it so much.
So Shaq fuu better be good hehe
@nhSnork Ive never actually seen that
Eh you guys not excited for this? the game is the best thing ever created by human hands!
With all the broken promises from Saber, I still doubt that we are getting a free copy.
Well it can't be worse then it predecessor right?
If the game is actually good it would feel wrong somehow....
Im with everyone waiting for free copy couldnt be a better price. Plus NBA Playground is a great game.
Finally! The AAA third party support the Switch deserves!
Why? WHY? WHHHHHHHHHHY!?
Can't wait for my free copy.
But...why?
It can't be any worse than Meme Run...right?
Look, we were poor, so when mom got me a game... I sure as hell played it to death, grinning wide the whole time. Didn't matter what or how.
This is all to say I liked Shaw Fu. You can decide if it's a PSA about poverty, but as a kid with few SNES games and lots of time alone I do have some fond memories...
I used to play vs mode on SHAQ FU for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive at my cousin's house. It is not as bad as everyone says. I actually really liked the graphics and art direction. Oh, and the story line is hilariously awesome!
Now we just need a sequel to MICHAEL JORDAN: CHAOS IN THE WINDY CITY!!!!
A free copy shall be mine. I can't wait
This is proof there are way too many ports coming to the Switch. I'm a fan of a lot of them and many make sense to bring to the Switch but this? No thanks!
@BradC40 How does this not "make sense"? It's a beat 'em up, a genre which is quite welcome by many Nintendo gamers, and the Nintendo Switch is a gold rush for indie games right now. Seems like it makes perfect sense.
"If you have fond memories of the Shaq Fu games of the 16-bit era, then you are in luck."
No you're in need of counselling
My years of waiting are over.
Still love Shaq (and Saber). Looking forward to this one.
If you recover health by drinking Soda Shaq, I'm done.
The Shaqtus is too precious for this world.
I enjoy the old Shaq Fu on the SNES, it's actually not that bad of a fighting game but it does leave a lot to be desire. For one it had less characters than the Genesis version and even though there's a blood code, there's no fatalities in the game. I do love the fact that if you got a Game Over in arcade mode, the game will tell you how to perform one of the character's special move. Now for this one I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the beat em up style gameplay. For one it seems like it'll just be single player with five stages only and it look too much like a mobile game. I'll just do a wait and see on this one.
@Audiobrainiac I have no problems with beat 'em ups, but one featuring Shaq? To me he represents the NBA of the '90's. Is he relevant today? If we have to have a beat 'em up featuring an NBA player, and we don't, I would prefer someone playing today like Durant or LeBron.
Wow, this could be a rare misstep on Switch games. Every Shaq game has been terrible.
I'm guessing we should not hold our breath for the promised Wii U release at this point.
@mr12calvin Resident Evil Revelations and Bayonetta dilogies (well, Bayonetta soon to be trilogy, but that's beside the point here) allow you to buy either game and get a discount for the other. There's also a handful of titles from another publisher (two Frederic games, Sparkle 2 Evo, Violett, Millie... and something else, I think?) that do a similar thing. You can read more on the respective games' pages.
@BradC40 I'm just saying, It's a reboot of a 90's video game, thats the point. So, of course Saber Interactive is banking on whatever nostalgia that old game might've left to push this new one. Its aimed at people who grew up in the 90's. Besides, what else would u call this game? LeBron James Fu? Doesn't have quite the same ring to it...
Ya gotta remember, its a Shaq game, not really a basketball game.
Taken on its own, it still looks pretty sloppy.
In accordance with "Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn"'s botched launch, Saber Interactive would like to apologize with free Shaq Fu-themed DLC in NBA Playgrounds, as well a free physical and digital copy of "Shaq Fu Tu: A Legend Re-Reborn", which launches this upcoming holiday season. Thank you.
Nba turned out to be a half decent local multi player game for me. Will give this game a try since its free.
@Dazza June 10 or July 10? I keep reading that Shaq Fu is free if you buy before the online update(which went live July 10), but you say June 10 in the article. I really hope it's July 10 because I think I bought it on June 14
No Wii U, no sale.
Free game for me so no complaints plus it actually looks pretty cool and fun to play
@Audiobrainiac I get it. Not trying to rain on your parade. Didn't know Shaq had such a video game following. I still have a dozen or so of his rookie cards so I was into him back in the day.
Enjoy the game! 🍻
Can we get "Chaos in Windy City"
please?
@ACK I was in the same boat as you. Family didndidn't have a lot of money especially for games and my brother and I played the heck our SNES. LTTP was the best!
Looking forwars to my free copy. Haven't played Playgrounds in months. It's been Splatoon 2 for me.
I was waiting so long to hear more news about this game. Glad to hear it didn't evaporate during the past three and a half years.
