Re: Feature: Best NES Games

BanjoPickles

@Euler

That’s because whoever came up with this list created it in a weird way. You could eliminate the garbage by including:

-Castlevania III
-Ninja Gaiden II
-Blades of Steel
-Bionic Commando
-Little Nemo
-Contra
-Wizards and Warriors
-Double Dribble
-Dragon Warrior 1,3, 4
-Faxanadu
-Shadowgate
-Deja Vu
-Uninvited
-Jackal
-Mega Man 3, 4
-Little Samson
-Abadox
-Batman
-Battletoads

This list is a joke.

Re: Feature: Best NES Games

BanjoPickles

This list is garbage, and here's why:

Almost every game on this list is available either on NSO or the NES Classic (with the exception of Final Fantasy II, which is a unanimously hated game in the series), which tells me that most of the people who voted blindly cast their vote.

-The exclusion of games that belong in any top 50 NES list. First off, what business does Solomon's Key have on this list? Why is Ice Hockey here when Blades of Steel is the more widely-loved hockey game? Where is Shadowgate? Uninvited? Why is Ninja Gaiden on this list but the vastly superior Ninja Gaiden II nowhere to be seen? How about Bionic Commando? Dragon Warrior IV? Double Dribble? Little Nemo? Duck Tales? Did Contra even make the list? Why do these lists pretend that Faxanadu never happened?

And even though Mario 3 is a great game, is it really the best game on the platform?

Re: Random: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Trends On Social Media Ahead Of Nintendo's Direct Broadcast

BanjoPickles

As much as I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, could we ask for things other than the usual rotation of Zelda-Mario-Pokémon-Smash Bros.-Zelda? How about F-Zero, Pilotwings, Punch Out, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Warioware, Elite Beat Agents, Star Tropics, or any of the other franchises that Nintendo neglects for generations on end? Let them take their sweet time and release the next Zelda as a launch title for the next batch of hardware!

Re: Soapbox: When Is The Next 'Big' Nintendo Direct? Oh, Does It Really Matter Anymore?

BanjoPickles

Why would there magically be a full Direct in the near future? Nothing has really changed from last year.

Honestly, I get the feeling that Nintendo has quietly retired the Direct, as we knew them. If Sony and Microsoft can have full presentations, there is no reason why Nintendo couldn’t as well. Also, they were able to put together a Direct for Super Nintendo Land theme park.

Re: Select Neo Geo Games On The Switch eShop Are Currently 50% Off

BanjoPickles

I grabbed Metal Slug X and Fatal Fury 3. I would love to see games like Nam 75, Elevator Action, Frogger, Burgertime, and others to be put on sale.

On a side note, there is a huge gap in the ACA line: Williams/Midway. I wish that I had access to games like Tapper, Robotron, Off Road, Paperboy, Gauntlet, etc.

Who has the rights to those games, since Midway is no longer in the business?

Re: Random: Family Video Closes Its Doors After 42 Years

BanjoPickles

So sad:

I have so many great memories about Family Video. Originally, our FV was the size of a small living room. A bunch of us would ride our bikes there after playing football at the local JFL field. You could either rent one NES game for a night for $2.50 (the recently released/biggest titles) or two games for seven nights for $1 (the hidden gems, older games). Family Video is the reason why my favorite NES games were not Mario 3 or Zelda, but instead Faxanadu, River City Ransom, Final Fantasy, Guerilla War, and so many others. I only owned about nine NES games, but I probably rented over 100. I remember when rented games still had the manual, and I was confused as to why FV got rid of them in exchange for the one page manual that was laminated to the plastic case (I found out, years later, that it had to do with copyright infringement).

I also remember renting an SNES, shortly after release. Instead of renting Mario World, I rented Home Alone and Final Fantasy II. At first, the SNES left me cold.....that is until I rented a game called Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.

Thanks to Family Video, gaming during the 16 bit era was just as exciting. I was the only kid in the neighborhood with a Sega CD, and our Family Video had a small selection of games for it, so I didn’t have to beg my dad to take me to Blockbuster. It was common to go in, after school, and find my buddy Carson playing the SNES kiosk. We actually met there, over a friendly game of Mortal Kombat 2.

I’m going to miss that place. So many great memories were born there.

Re: Nintendo 3DS Production Has Officially Come To An End

BanjoPickles

@Zidentia

What’s funny is that hardly any first party DS games did anything for me. I thought New Super Mario Bros. was average, Animal Crossing felt like a major step down from its predecessor, and the Zelda games were only so-so. I did love Canvas Curse, though.

My favorite games were:

-The World Ends With You
-Elite Beat Agents
-the Castlevania trilogy
-Ninjatown
-GTA: Chinatown Wars
-Dragon Quest IX
-Radiant Historia
-Ghost Trick
-the Phoenix Wright series
-Contra 4
-Retro Game Challenge

The 3DS’s library had a really good first party library, but I was never that impressed with its third party games.

Re: Nintendo 3DS Production Has Officially Come To An End

BanjoPickles

@JayJ

I sort of agree. I liked the 3DS, but the original DS is probably my all-time favorite piece of Nintendo hardware. It just had such a vast library of quality games and it was one of the few times in Nintendo’s history where the third party titles outshone the first party.

Re: Video: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Looks Miles Better Than The Originals, And Here's The Proof

BanjoPickles

@doctorhino

Or we can complain, as we always do. If they had remade the games completely, people would have b**ched that Nintendo changed things too much. If they had included Galaxy 2, people would have asked "why not just include 3D World to round things out?" If they had released Mario 64 as part of the NSO service, people would have complained about Nintendo rehashing Mario 64 for the umpteenth time (DS, Wii, Wii U), while leaving Sunshine to rot in purgatory. People are going to complain, no matter what. A physical copy of Sunshine will run you in the neighborhood of $40-60. I look at it like I'm getting three of my favorite games, from the past twenty-five years, with just enough upscaling to make me happy. I don't need museums, bonus material, etc. I have far too much to play, and far too much going in my life, to nitpick. Also, I kind of see it as a situation where if I'm that unhappy with the package, I can simply vote with my wallet.

Re: Video: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Looks Miles Better Than The Originals, And Here's The Proof

BanjoPickles

It's hilarious that people have been begging for this precise collection for months, and built up this totally unrealistic expectation that Nintendo was going to actually REMAKE all three games. If you don't want the games, don't buy the collection. This is exactly what I, and so many other people, wanted: a faithful rerelease of three amazing games that can now be played on the move.

Re: Last Month's Top 10 Switch Games Were All Published By Nintendo (US)

BanjoPickles

It is what it is:

Me, I’ll take a (reasonable) hit on graphics to have a game on the go (Witcher III, Dark Souls 3, Wolfenstein II), but that’s not how everybody operates.

I’ll never buy a Nintendo console for first party releases alone. It’s the main reason why I opted out of the N64, and why Wii U didn’t appeal to me. Gamecube, Wii, and Switch have had more than enough third party releases to lure me in. If the DS hadn’t had the third party support it did, it wouldn’t have been a tenth of the handheld it was.

Re: Feature: 1995's Nintendo Was Arrogant And Ahead Of Its Time All At Once

BanjoPickles

For years, I questioned Nintendo's decision to stick with the cartridge format but, looking back, I think they did the right thing. Could you imagine playing Mario 64 with the load times that were common in that era? How long has it been since you have played games from the era on the original hardware? The load times were absolutely awful. Also, even though most of the games from that era have aged like crap, N64 games still look clean compared to games on the Playstation.

Re: Video: Check Out Nintendo's Japanese TV Spots For Super Mario 3D All-Stars

BanjoPickles

@Uncle_Andross

-Splatoon 2
-Arms
-Breath of the Wild (co-launch with Wii U)
-1-2 Switch (crap game, but still new)
-Super Mario Odyssey
-Fire Emblem 3 Houses
-Pokémon Sword and Shield
-Mario Maker 2
-Luigi’s Mansion 3
-Paper Mario: Origami King
-Yoshi Crafted World
-Mario Tennis Aces
-Smash Bros. Ultimate
-Xenoblade Chronicles 2
-Ring Fit Adventure
-Labo
-Kirby Star Allies
-Clubhouse Games
-Animal Crossing New Horizons
-LoZ: Link’s Awakening Remake
-Pokémon Let’s Go

Those are the 1st/2nd party exclusives. Do Sony/MS have a list of 1st party releases that can compare?

Re: Video: That Super Mario Direct Was Lovely, If A Tad Predictable

BanjoPickles

@NintendoPok

*sigh

I’m not talking about competition in the literal sense. I’ll break it down:

Due to the pandemic, the announcements this year have ranged from good (Paper Mario, Pikmin) to complete garbage (that Direct Mini where they actually highlighted a WWE Chiba game). This is the first announcement all year that actually got me excited. So, when I say the competition is light, I am referring to all of Nintendo’s announcements throughout the year.

Re: Video: That Super Mario Direct Was Lovely, If A Tad Predictable

BanjoPickles

A tad predictable? I never could have predicted Super Mario Bros. 35, and the Mario Kart Living Room Circuit is a cool, unexpected idea (though I won't be getting it). Mario All Stars on NSO was a nice surprise, and I am relieved that I was wrong about 3D All Stars. All in all, this is the best thing they have done all year, though the competition is pretty light.

Did you all get your pre orders in? As soon as Best Buy started them, I jumped on.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition - A Weak RPG Enlivened By Nostalgia

BanjoPickles

@mercilessrobo

Exactly! Oh, and if you happened to have that set up, which one has to carry the bucket?? Lol! It was a stupid set up, and a pretty poor return for Squaresoft (they weren’t yet Square Enix, were they?) on Nintendo consoles. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was the real return, as far as I’m concerned, and I’d rather have a Switch remake of that gem!
