I’m not really frame-rate minded at all - In fact back in the PS2 days I sort of enjoyed the feeling of those boundary pushing games bringing your console to a chug.
But MGS2 at 30fps…that’s a betrayal on levels we’ve never before seen.
Modern day Paris doesn’t do much to invoke the theme and title of ‘Legends’ too.
It looks like they recognized Arceus struck a chord with fans and they thought oh let’s pump more resources into this. It’s undeniably lost a lot of charm and the cozy GameCube vibes of the original.
On the plus side it made me want to give Arceus a try.
The full price is aimed squarely at the people who know about its heritage and can’t afford the original on GBA.
There’s too much good stuff coming out all the time for those partially curious to drop 20 quid on it, so it’s not likely going to find much of a new audience. Bit of a shame.
@LikelySatan Sometimes you can say something basic and it be absolutely correct, friend.
If you read carefully, my beef (which has since subsided) was not with companies sending PR emails, but with journalists just regurgitating said emails for a quick story.
Hey…maybe it’s going to be a cracker and it’s the exact type of game I want to see touted on gaming sites. I love castlevania and would happily be proven wrong.
@Zuljaras the article was posted very soon after the trailer went up and it felt to me like lazy/dubious journalism to cover a game that seems middling/wonky just because they (most likely) got a press email
This. THIS is how you compile retro games. What an absolute ripper of a line-up. Such warm Dreamcast vibes I’m in love before I’ve even seen a trailer.
Those folks behind the recent Taito and Neo Geo comps need to take note.
I played this for the first time very recently and it made me want to swear off bloated RPGs for life.
Such a slick, compact, beautiful template for a game. So ahead of its time and full of warmth, heart and DOPE JAMZ.
You can breeze through it in the time it takes Brothership to let go of your hand. I wish Nintendo would look to it’s pace more often to build more short form masterpieces like it.
Seems like all Taito had to do to win back jaded hearts is put progressively better games on the compilations. It’s still a meager collection of roms massively overpriced compared to previous console generations, without any of the attention to detail capcom, M2 and the like put into theirs.
One mark shy of perfection is pushing it a bit, especially when the reviewer mentions better examples of a genre in some cases.
The acknowledgment in the credits is abrupt and corporate sounding. It’s a shame.
Let’s all pause for a moment before we lose our minds and think of just how many millions of people in countless fields of work don’t get to see their name swish along a screen for their hard work. Starting with the actual hardware designers, do we see their names each time we power down our Switch? It’s thanks to them we’re playing anything at all.
I think it points to a new Donkey Kong in that style in the not too distant future. As does the weird timing of the DKC returns port.
I also think it seems a welcome shift towards classic Kong and that it’s too early to claim it as hideous based on brief glimpses with 1st gen webcam fidelity. Let’s all just chill till we’ve seen the big chimp front row and center, yeah?
I mean, there’s truth in it but it doesn’t carry any weight as an excuse to NOT have a female lead. For starters maturity is so widely varied from person to person.
Maybe they feel that having a male high schooler lead just presents more material for the social development side of the game.
The social aspect in an all salaryman cast has too much chance of being depressing! Blue collar workers or a cast of drag queens would be far more colorful socially!
Capcom are giving their fighting library the absolute royal treatment and it’s a shame SNK aren’t capitalizing and doing the same.
There’s so many franchises or at least genres that deserve Capcom’s level of love and beyond. Not to mention SNK’s untouched character/box art
It’s a real shame to see these no frills releases with genres or franchises calculatedly spread across volumes so fans of a specific series feel more compelled to buy them all.
Hand on heart here, Phartsy…my comment was snarky and unnecessary, you’re right.
It’s fair to criticize reviews too, but it’s also easy enough to find info on the story and the reviewer here didn’t feel the need to go into it and that’s their choice.
You’re maybe after a thorough rundown of mechanics and the like in a review. I just like to hear a summary with a more personal take (dunkey being the most popular I can think of).
Not trying to win anything here, sorry I made you bring out the ALL CAPS
@phartsy it’s also pretty tiring to hear gamers thinking that a reviewer has to expand on every area of a game in the interest of someone’s free time, not write the review they want to write. But here we are.
@phartsy why not spend 5 minutes of your life looking at another review? Or does the writer have to change the article to suit your needs? That’s 20 minutes of their life we’re talking here.
I really love The Origami King. It didn’t wow many people but I’d personally rank it close to the games you mentioned. Brothership isn’t in the same tier as Superstar Saga. SO FAR!
I couldn’t give a solitary fart about performance. It runs fine…but there’s a limit where guiding the player scrubs out the fun of exploration, puzzle solving and progress in general.
I just had a little puzzle moment where I hit falling seeds with a hammer to make a flower bloom. There was an NPC right before it to tell me exactly what I needed to do. It would have been so much more entertaining to not have any dialogue, press L for Luigi to get in place and figure it out myself.
It’s really old-fashioned, insecure game design. If they did away with moments like that, the PS2 pace cut-scenes when a gate unlocks, and yes, even the map (big objectives are always north), it’d be a much better game.
I know well enough that there are themes of equality in the game… but as soon as you include what’s being ‘debated’ here, it contradicts or detracts from the messages of the game and that’s not even opinion, it’s FACT.
You call me insulting when you were rude and belligerent about an issue I mentioned way, waaayyyy more serious than this and you also have me painted as some sort of campaigner for sexism, when my only real issue is that this is a NINTENDO published game. I have relatively little idea of the horrors that lie on Steam’s NSFW pages, and have no strong opinion on them either, but let’s not have such superfluous features bleed in to a game affiliated with Mario, yeah?
This IS a waste of time and energy though, that’s a great point.
@Samalik “”Edit: Also, mysteriously omitting the part where I said men and women are treated equally in game.... That's only adding to the suspicions...””
Equally? Ah so there’s a slider to adjust how much heat the male characters are packing?
You’re conveniently leaving out or shunning the points I’ve made too, m8
You’re obviously passionate enough about the series that your mind is completely closed on the topic, but sure I’ll play a 100 hour RPG so I can legitimately continue this thrilling debate. See you next summer!
@Samalik “relating that kind of behavior to what is essentially it's own universe with it's own rules and relaxations is still nuts of a relation and you know it”

What a bummer these absolute shysters are behind the newly announced Karateka, Tetris and Jeff Minter collection physical editions.
