For those diving into Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate as their first major entry in the series, they may be surprised by the sheer volume of free DLC that is offered. Capcom typically provides a host of quests, items and assorted goodies in the months that follow release, and the latest entry on 3DS will include some fairly wacky crossover costumers.
At launch Capcom issued a very handy starter's pack of items as DLC, but the additional content really begins next week, on 6th March. In addition to a new weapon and episode quest, the key additions will be Link-themed armour and weapons, which you can see in action below.
We're set to receive new content every month, and still to come we have outfits based on Metroid, Animal Crossing, Street Fighter and possibly others that we've overlooked. There'll be plenty of quests to tackle, too.
Are you still buried in the depths of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate's quests, and are you ready for some free DLC to beef it up further? Let us know.

I'm hoping the Shonen Jump DLC comes outside Japan
Is this DLC going to stay free for a period of time or is it permanent? I still haven't picked the game up. >_____>
I can't wait! MH4 is my 2nd favourite game of all time now It MIGHT (I repeat MIGHT!) even dethrone LoZ:WWhd!!!
As if this game doesn't already have an absurd amount of content already. Ah well, the more the merrier!
I've been waiting for this ever since the DLC was first announced.
Hopefully it will distract people from jumping around on their pogo weapon
Every single time I finish a quest in the single player campaign another pops up, so I am still pretty busy with the quests I already have. I'll always take free dlc even though I don't like the idea of playing as Link in Monster Hunter. The outfits won't get much use from me just like the Mario & Luigi Palicoe costumes didn't.
REALLY Feeling the love form Nintendo Partners right now - Tecno koi and their fantastic Hyrule Warriors DLC and now Monster hunter 4 Ultimate amazeballs load of DLC! Fantastic games with fantastic support! Let's go!
@AlphaAlex It's High Rank gear
@nf_2 It will stay free
I want that Samus costume now!
@nf_2 It's Monster Hunter, it's always free and will stay that way. (...until the servers are taken down and you can't get it at all, lol)
anyways you're fine.
@Sanya @Cross296 In this case, yes. But don't be too sure it will stay so. When going to the download for the Starter's Pack in-game, it actually shows the current eShop balance, implying that there might be paid DLC at some point, though nothing of the sorts has shown up in Japan yet.
@PikaNick @PikaNick
That's why you still do it.
@Kaze_Memaryu I think that's for something else, and not this DLC, most of the DLC 4G has gotten is free. Can't remember what the paid part is, think it just gives you a bunch of items or something.
@Dpullam really? I found the Luigi costume to be really useful early on, my cat was almost stronger than my character with it
I'll be honest, I'm still a Monster Hunter noob, with just shy of 100 hours playtime into MH3U.
I know if I get 4U, I won't finish 3, so I'm being very sensible. So long as this DLC is available for a long while, I will just carry on playing my old game...
Free DLC is always welcome, though!
I'm hoping the Link armor is at least high rank. I just got to high rank and I could reeeaaally use it...
@JaxonH - Time to get your Ferris Bueller on
@PvtOttobot
Is the game really that good? I've only played the demo, and it seems pretty bland and boring to me...
@Boidoh I think everyone can agree that the demo is bad despite having some improvements over the 3U one. You can't really fit in all of what Monster Hunter has to offer in a demo.
@Boidoh demos can not help this game. You need to play the full game. When you start earning things from hunts and put that towards the various equipment you need for later hunts the game really opens up.
@Boidoh Yeah, as they said, the demo doesn't really do it justice. The game's real magic is in the 'leveling' system (or lack thereof). It's all about A) forging better armor/weapons from the monsters you fight, finding better items and upgrading just about anything B) Improving your raw button skill, weapon skill, knowing the monsters, knowing the right items to take and knowing the right strategy. No other game puts such an emphasis on ACTUAL EXPERIENCE, none of this '+10 exp', it's a simple, the more you play the better you get. It's an extremely gratifying system, and coupled with A) it totally makes you feel like a real life greenhorn monster hunter on a quest for glory
@Moon You can't finish a Monster Hunter game xD
Glad this is coming out, in the same vane as MH3U it will flesh out the experience. I am racing through this games online story and that scares me, I don't want it to be over hence why I am excited for the DLC. High rank armour could be useful I guess despite being HR. 6 (the end of high rank) Sadly the weapons don't excite me very much despite being a huge Zelda fan, mainly because I found that Seregios weaponry is a thing.
@DarthNocturnal seeing how the master sword and hylian shield are exactly a sword and a shield, I can see why they went that route
I'd prefer a Hunting Horn of Time though, that would've been sweet.
I am just hoping to be burnt out on MH4U in time to take a nice long break for Xenoblade 3D.
Is every weapon class going to have a Hyrulian equivalent? I'd love to see a Deku Stick Glave and Big Goron Longsword.
Cool! Why did Link sound like a woman?
Yup, I'm still completely enthralled by MH4U's quests. Getting a new one already with sweet Link armor/weapons is beyond awesome.
@TeeJay sadly no. I would so love a deku stick glaive, and it could use the beetle from Skyward Sword!
@Moon finish a MH game? Are you insane?? Just upgrade, the amount of content per title is more than most finish!
@Boidoh my first exposure to the series was the 3U demo... Which was horrible, but I took the chance and got 3U anyways, didn't regret it. The 4U demo is SLIGHTLY better than the 3U one (offering the Great Jaggi was a step in the right direction) but still, it's not a good intro for new players. The game has too steep a learning curve to be thrown into like that, and collecting materials to forge weapons is such a huge mechanic which the demo neglects. Don't base your opinion off the demo. If you possess the courage, just take the plunge! I warn you though, once you take down your first large monster with armor and a weapon you toiled to make, you may find yourself quite addicted.
The DLC is monthly? A little disappointed, 3U had weekly DLC. Hope it all will be free, so excited for Friday now!
Link's hammer would be awesome too.

Hunting horn as a massive ocarina of time is the best thing I've heard today. Still, as a primary bow user, I'm pumped to lay waste to monsters with the hero's bow. My contribution to this set of ideas for LoZ themed Monster Hunter weapons is the gust jar bowgun.
Also, darknut armor needs to be a thing.
Nice would be sweet if they made a Monster Hunter Amiibo.
Does the DLC expire at some point?
Hmm, other Zelda-themed possibility.
Big Goron's Sword = Great Sword
regarding MH amiibo, they should make a MH character in smash bros
@Cross296 How do you know it is High Rank gear?
I just got Rare10 Chameleos armor set two days ago so probably won't use the armor - would still collect it though. Weapons would probably be more useful... Really digging that master sword!
I'm new to the Monster hunter series and haven't picked up the game yet (I know!) This caught my attention and I finally played the demo. I will be getting this game soon and the free dlc is a real treat!!
@rjejr
No need- I just play MH4U at work all day now
Yesterday was double time for 8 hours. Managed to play MH for a few hours, watched about 4 episodes of House of Cards on Netflix and well, I'd say I only did about 15 minutes of real, ACTUAL work lol
@AlphaAlex
You know you can upgrade armor to be on-par with the higher ranked sets' stats, right?
@Bushido_Fai
The game has been out since October of last year in Japan, so they've already gotten this DLC. This is one of those series people tend to import.
@MorphMarron You are right. They are incredibly useful starting off, but for some reason I couldn't stand seeing my Palicoe in a Luigi costume. And I'm a pretty big Luigi fan, so I just removed it and put the traditional Monster Hunter armor on him. It's great that you like it though! It is free after all.
Not ready for DLC, this game is pretty huge as is.
@JaxonH - Good for you, maybe your mood will improve now
Mine was improving, but our 1-3 inches of snow changing to rain turned into 6" of heavy snow, and now my back is killing me from shoveling this morning I may need to get a snowblower instead of a PS4 next Christmas, realities of getting old.
My last job I worked all day on Mondays then just about 20 minutes a day Tues-Fri. Stupidily I quit to become a house-spouse (our new home needed some remodeling work before my wife started poppin out puppies) and then I transitioned into stay-at-home dad. Now here I am 13 years later and my only friend is an underworking overpaid videogame junkie
@rjejr
Birds of a feather, right
Weekends are always slow here, but Sundays are atrocious. Measured 2 parts in 8 hours, but, they have to pay someone to be here cause if they're making bad parts it'll cost em in the tens of thousands.
If only I could find a way to turn you on to Monster Hunter... You might lose all desire to own anything other than that one game
If its free DLC, its for me.
Short ranged double (claw)hookshots would be sweet for dual blades zelda themed weapon
@JaxonH - I micro manage my household and kids, I don't need to mircromanage in a game Also, after playing thru most of MH Tri on Wii I really hate the lack of lock-on - yes I'm one of THOSE people. And TBH the game got a bit difficult around the 5th or 6th boss in, not a big fan of the 60 minute time limit. Seriously, I'm out in a hot dessert dieing of dehydration and getting attacked by sand sharks and I have limited room for inventory supplies, do I really need to miraculously lose the fight 60 minutes in while my pray is stumbling around severely wounded? Though I finally beat that boss. And the underwater one.
Ever play FF12? Lousy 50 hour storyline (can't remember a thing) but I spent another 100+ hours after that hunting monsters while both my kids watched me - they were littl'uns at the time. So I do like hunting monsters, just not all the rest. FF13 was similar, bad story, fun monster fetch quests.
Oh, and no 3DS yet either.
@rjejr
Allow me to address some of your concerns:
Most fights don't take nearly 50 minutes. In fact, I average 10-15 minutes on 9 out of 10 hunts, and that includes the time it takes to find the monster and a little gathering on the side. If you're taking anything longer than 15-20 minutes, you need a stronger weapon.
Also, there is Z targeting now. As of MH3U you can tap the "lock on button" to activate Z targeting, after which any time you tap R the camera automatically swings around to face the monster. Of course, a little manual skill to control the camera never is a bad idea.
And the rest is what makes the game so addictive! Granted, in the first half of low rank you spend a disproportionate amount of time doing other things. Midway through low rank you really don't have to do anything but hunt monsters anymore, unless you choose to. All basic herbs and supplies can be purchased, and you make more than enough money from quests (and especially growing and selling nulberries, and selling extra monster parts will make you rich) to stay stocked up on what you need.
In online hunts, we usually take down monsters in 5-10 minutes, most times closer to 5. So yeah, I think you were severely under-equipped. And once you craft your first armor set from a monster, if you so choose you can just keep upgrading it rather than crafting new ones as you move up.
And here's a pro tip- bring a cool drink next time you're in the desert. It negates all effects
@Moon Wait, 100 hours makes you a Monster Hunter noob? I tried Tri for several hours and it didn't hook me.
Now I bought 4 and have put about 5 hours into it. This one is hooking me, but I figured I'd only be considered a noob until I hit about 20-30 hours. I guess this game is even more complex than I thought
Gonna start MH3 on 3ds tonight. Wish me luck guys!
Is there free DLC for MH3 too?
Anyone else from Mexico trying to get a copy of MH4? GamePlanet does not have it yet. I can download it but I prefer to have this game physically.
@JaxonH - Well I guess I should look into MH4U if and when I get a new XL, you make it sound like fun, and a Wii U version doesn't seem to be in the making.
Or I can just wait for Splatoon and spend all of my free time hunting squid
Man I missed that theme song!
A bit sad that it's monthly DLC instead of weekly like it used to be but at the same time if they give weapons and costumes I don't mind waiting. Back when I played MH Freedom unite on PSP they gave something like 2 or 3 quests (usually high rank) and one arena type quest. per week. Don't remember getting any item but I could be wrong. I'm glad I got this game with my New 3DS red XL. The C-stick works perfectly and the game is just awesome. I'll be playing this one for a long long while!
EDIT: Anyone know where to get Super Mushrooms? I'd like to make the hammer for my Palico but I've used the ones they gave in the starter pack.
It's too bad Link has never used Double Blades or a Long Sword because I'm not too fond of the Sword and Shield or Bow in Monster Hunter 4U.
I haven't run into a situation where I felt I needed to use a ranged weapon yet but if it came up I guess I'd use the Bow.
@AlphaAlex Crap I though as much. Thanks for answering.
@ReaperX30 They speciffically said that you have to choose if you want Mario or Luigi with the hammer. But don't worry, the hammer is pretty weak and gets replaced in early high rank - just like the Mario/Luigi armor :/
@Cross296 The weapon can be upgraded to Rare10, with Awaken it's the best fire SnS. Has 3 slots, but a little weak on sharpness though.
The armor is only Rare7 High Rank, too bad it has bad skills.
@DrVollKornBrot Yeah I didn't think and made the entire Mario suit and then the Luigi Hat so it took all the mushrooms. I'm still HR 1 since I've been doing only the story quests. I'm at the second town with one quest left on the 2 stars list. Got the leader shotels and the Hunter's Stoutbow I since I mainly use the dual blades and bow. I was thinking of mining Seltas to make the Heat Haze bow which seems a bit better than what I have. Is it any good. Any tips since I'm just starting out.
A Fire Emblem DLC pack would be really cool. IMO.
@nf_2 I don't know if it's timed, but it never becomes paid DLC. That's how it was with 3 and that's what Capcom has said it'll be like for 4.
