This review makes it sound like the games barely function, but the framerate dips are nowhere near as bad as claimed here, and the resolution dips are fairly brief when they happen.
I swear, people are seeing "inevitable Switch Pro release" in everything now. People are probably taking the arrangement of their cornflakes as a sign.
Not sure if the decision to sell these separately instead in one bundle if the decision of LRG or the IP holders, but I do know that LRG has to reach out to the publishers in order to do these releases. They have to reach an agreement and then order all of their pre-orders for cartridge construction. Definitely would've been better as one package, just not sure who's final call it is.
I just have to say, whatever the reason, I'm getting tired of Switch version always being last. Especially when it's slated for a simultaneous release and then gets pushed back at the last second.
Someone is dropping the ball hard, be it Nintendo or the developers. You don't shout out "Here it is!' and then 2 seconds later go "my bad, whoopsie."
We need more of these crossovers. Mario+Rabbids, Cadence of Hyrule, and Age of Calamity have all turned out to be good games and have been quite successful given their niche genres. Infusion of the Nintendo brand can sell almost any game, and experiences like these keep things fresh and interesting.
Nintendo is always looking to experiment and breath new ideas or life into their games, and they've got a golden opportunity staring them in the face.
I'd agree except for the countless AAA games right now that actively seek to nickel and dime you to death or get you to pre-order a game that is almost unplayable at release. The numerous beloved titles that have gone mobile, yearly cash grabs that still contain logo assets from previous years, the push for gambling in games (yes, lootboxes are gambling.), etc.
There are plenty of fantastic games, for sure, but EVERY generation had it's stand-out hits. No generation of gaming sucked to the extent of having no good games, there have ALWAYS been a plethora of good games to play from. The attempt to streamline and monetize the industry to death, however, is a taint right now.
Frankly I thought the 360/Wii/PS3 era was better than the X1/WiiU/PS4 era, and one of the best times for gaming. DLC was usually done well, adding onto fully fleshed out games, and most open-world experiences were unique and alive, not the same generic radiant quests. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Red Dead Redemption, the Saints Row series, the original Mass Effect trilogy, etc. That's not counting the other numerous fantastic games like Gears of War, The Last of Us, the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, Street Fighter 4, etc.
I love my Switch and there's a lot of great games from recently on all platforms: FE: Three Houses, Astral Chain, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, BOTW, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, The Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima, etc. However, I can't turn a blind eye to all the crap going on in the industry. Enjoy your hobby but always been aware of ongoing events.
@GrailUK So Epic is suing Apple by claiming Apple has a monopoly, while Epic is trying to get a monopoly unto itself by getting every single game on it's storefront.
@LillianC14 That's what happens when you've managed to create a franchise that can put out a yearly rehash and sell 15-20 million copies every time. Not even Mario has that much persistent selling power.
As a result, Activision is willing to do whatever they must to milk that cow.
@acNewUpdates Unfortunately legacy content for the Switch comes in at a snail's pace. We go literally months before a handful of NES/SNES titles appear on NSO, and anything post-SNES will once in a while get a port.
@Chamver A lot of people are way too sensitive about spoilers, agreed. Some people act like their life is over if a plot point is accidentally spoiled for them. Life goes on, and product can still be enjoyed.
On the flip-side, however, leakers are a plague. Make no mistake, leakers are not an altruistic force looking out for their fellow gamer. With only a few exceptions, they do what they do simply because they crave the attention and empowerment they get out of it.
simply point, the world doesn't end if spoilers are revealed, but those intentionally doing it are spoiled brats purposely trying to ruin others enjoyment for their own ego.
By the logic of this article, console exclusives are non existent because modded and pirates can get just about anything running on PC. Once computers get strong enough, you'll see ps4 and xb1 emulators become common.
@Krambo42 I guess it is a personal preference thing, but also a case of severity. If it's a fun game but has some roughness, then patches are a great thing. I enjoy a lot of games that have some technical issues, and I don't expect "perfect polish". If a game releases in a state where it can barely function, then a delay would probably be in order.
In major cases like Anthem or Cyberpunk 2077, games released in a state that was so unpolished/buggy that it set the gaming world alight. Games like those had no business being released in their original state and asking for money. This is also why some people are not into the idea of pre-ordering. A pre-order is giving money to the company before you even know what the product is going to be in it's released state.
This has become more prevalent in the "live service" era, with games that are massively hyped, sold on a promise, and then subsequently killed before they can even patch it to the originally promised standards.
@Krambo42 Because the rate at which this happens nowadays is not acceptable. This isn't an isolated incident or a rare one. Games all to often release in compromised states these days, ranging from buggy to unstable to nearly unplayable.
It's like going to a restaurant, ordering a meal, and it comes out completely burnt. Regardless of whether they quickly fix it, it should not have come out like that in the first place. Now, imagine of restaurants sent out messed up meals more often than not.
Call me picky, but I prefer products I buy to have a baseline quality out of the box.
I do wonder how these companies so easily lose source code. You think that would be something important worth backing up and archiving, for situations such as this.
Because of the pandemic my rear. Activision has done this twice now; bragged about recording-breaking revenue, followed by the firing of employees and the increased bonuses.
@the4seer You're not wrong. Bayo 3 was definitely announced too early. My personal opinion is that both Bayo 3 and SMT 5 were announced pretty much as soon as they entered development because Nintendo was looking for early adopters. Definitely not a good tactic- it actually feels a bit dishonest, and I myself prefer to get short turnaround from announcement to release.
However, regardless of Bayo 3's development status or length, I still don't expect a masterpiece that flips the genre on it's head. That was my main point. We can definitely critique a company for dragging their feet or making a premature announcement to bait and switch people (Bethesda did this with Elder Scrolls 6 just to avoid the backlash of FO76) but we should also always keep our own expectations in check. Hype is a double-edged sword.
@dBackLash This is largely because in today's Social Media-driven world our attention spans have gone down the toilet. We're always getting bombarded with new materials and stories to the point that what is a big deal one today is completely forgotten tomorrow for the new headline.
I largely agree. Gamers can try to deflect responsibility but the fact is that we are at least partially responsible for over-hyping games for ourselves. People get mad for what THEY decided would be there. We de-construct trailers to the frame, look for hidden messages in tweets, and start to create fan theories that we assume will become reality. Sometimes it mostly lies on the publishers with blatant lies, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky, but even in those cases there were people straight up threatening anyone that reported anything that was slightly foreboding and not claiming the titles were the second coming of Christ. Critical review for Cyberpunk? Off with their head!
It's kind of like Directs. One thing I've noticed is that people end up being disappointed mainly on what they decided would be shown ahead of time. Were there any impressions of MP4 or BOTW2 being shown at the Feb. Direct? No. Expecting them is completely due to assumption. Not a completely unreasonable assumption, but an assumption nonetheless.
@the4seer Your Bayonetta 3 mention is actually a good point of what I'm talking about. Perhaps the game was indeed announced way too soon. However, those that will be disappointed if it's not a 10/10 masterpiece have only themselves to blame. We literally know nothing about the game. There's been no marketing, no trailers, no sneap peaks, no even leaks. Any expectations are purely in the imaginations of the customer at this point, and that is solely their own fault. I am not expecting a 10/10 game. I'm just expecting a good action game with that Platinum style behind it.
@Clamango Freedom of speech goes two ways. There's been a lot of threads where people shame people who liked this Direct as fanboys who will lap up anything. People are allowed to say that, and people are allowed to say that some people have unrealistic expectations.
No one should have expected MP4 news BTW. The game was literally SCRAPPED and restarted from scratch in 2019. Not just delayed, but completely rebooted. I knew it was going to take 3-4 years at the very least before we heard news. BOTW2 news could be expected, but not MP4.
@BenAV That is the worst excuse anyone uses to deflect criticism. You can say that toward ANY critical review. "Well if you don't like it you don't have to play it." "Why bother reviewing this game if it isn't your cup of tea?"
For the record I myself will not seek out this game, thanks to it's setting. Fact is while some people may see the setting as a positive, others will see it as a negative. Instead of projecting their own issues onto a subjective review (BTW all reviews are subjective, it is never anything more than a person relaying their experiences with something), people should instead take the context and apply toward their tastes. Will you find a pandemic setting relatable? Go for it, you might like the game. Will you be turned off by it? Then avoid the game, no one needs any extra stress right now. The reviewer did not like it and expressed such, simple as that.
@DevinRex The problem is that some of us don't want our games to remind us of the pandemic right now. We're reminded of it every day when we turn on the news, or wear a mask to go inside the grocery store, or see people make Covid puns in 5 year old videos on YouTube where they have no relevance.
Sometimes people want to use games actually escape reality for bit, to relax and not have to deal with the horrors life is brining upon them. At the very least, don't be so on the nose about it. Turning on a game to just relax and take the edge off, only for it to remind you of that thing that's been tearing the world apart? You say people people may find that cathartic. Some might, but I'd say some people also find that depressing.
@KillerBOB It's context asking how far they will go, the scalpers.
Right now it's just entertainment products: Next-gen consoles, graphics cards, Happy Meal toys, etc. But it raises the question if somebody would be willing to scalp up necessary or essential products for profit. And the fact that people will go out of their way to go to a McDonalds and mass buy Happy Meals shows that they will go farther than previously thought.
So one should ask themselves. WOULD these scalpers buy up something necessary for the sake of profit? I think some would.
@PBandSmelly Agreed, companies do this all the time, Bethesda gave a teaser for Elder Scrolls 6 because they knew fans were not going to be happy with the Fallout 76 announcement.
It's effective, though. Dangle a diamond in the distance and many gamers will be completely enamored.
@NinChocolate You must be unaware that several SNES games have soundtracks considered the greatest of all time in gaming. And that is in their compressed form.
@Strictlystyles Did you already forget? Multiple interviews Sean Murray was asked if feature A or B would be in the game and he kept saying "Yes, you can do that. yes, that'll be in the game." Game releases and so many promises were either embellished or flat out lies. They may have patched in several of those promises later, but the fact is they still straight up lied at release.
I for one think this guy is perfectly justified in how he feels and what he says. Yes, management in all of these situations flat-out lied. The state of Cyberpunk on consoles was lied about to customers AND investors. Sean Murray and Peter Molyneux both promised features that simply were not in their games at release. The only difference is No Man's Sky got updated and several features were added in later. Still, that initial deception cannot be forgotten.
And yes, both games journalists and gamers are quick to forget these sins. The author of this piece will try to point out some counter-arguments, but within a week of Cyberpunk's troubled release some diehard fans were saying "leave them alone, they don't deserve this!" Forgetting and forgiving so easily is why companies can continually get away with half-baked releases. They know that the complaints will usually effect nothing in the long run. It takes a massive situation like Battlefront II's lootboxes or Cyberpunk's false promises to really have any impact.
@ferryb001 Vgchartz don't have conclusive sources you can look at. Nintendo updates their official numbers quarterly. I'd way to see what Nintendo reports, actual numbers could be a little lower or a little higher.
A bit off topic, but I think Platinum needs to focus on games that have been announced instead of planning even more games. Lately their exciting updates are "We got another game in the works!" and I wonder what about the ones they've already been working on?
@TheFrenchiestFry Either in development hell or was cancelled, sadly. At one point it was supposed to be about 30% done, but then Harada made a statement saying they didn't want to split the fanbases with Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 out. The last update was Harada saying he wanted to release the game but his business side was questioning if he should. That was 2019
I'm sure I'll get some flak for this but I actually understand his POV. Accessibility is important and it's good to develop things to be open to as many people as possible. That said, even if it's an altruistic cause constant pressuring can irritate people. The simple fact is that this is not something "owed" to people. It's good that this is officially announced, but not every game is going to be accessible to every single person. This mode is no more mandatory than an easy mode in Dark Souls.
And he did not even really belittle or put down anyone. He basically said "please stop bugging us. We'll make it if we feel like making it." Could he have worded it better? Definitely. But the message in context is something I get.
@NathanTheAsian Without lawsuits and potential consequences Nintendo would not see the need to fix anything. The free repairs you brought up? Nintendo of America quietly rolled those out after the first lawsuit hit.
The more people that sue Nintendo over this, the better. If enough territories get on Nintendo's case, it'll motivate them to either fix the course issue or lower the price.
I was a bit curious, and then I realized it was the publishers buying rights from a developer. Never a fan of publishers acquiring rights from people who actually MAKE games. Hopefully they are a decent publisher.
Likely numbers given that the Switch has not lost any momentum this quarter, but I'm still waiting for the quarterly update. VGChartz is not the most reliable source of information, given that they are very hush-hush on how they accrue their data and there have been a couple times it differs wildly from official citations.
@Deadlyblack Except that Nintendo games are notorious for having legs and continuing to sell throughout a consoles lifespan. It would honestly be not only-anti-consumer, but a horrible business practice to have more limited releases. Hopefully they realize that steady sales over years is better than a quick surge for a few months.
"Buy now or miss out forever! Buy in bulk and you'll get a discount per item. No release date, and absolutely no footage to show! Hardware that's been discontinued for around 25 years!"
Dang this comment section got heated fast. And the inevitable name-calling hath begun.
Never been a fan of censorship. Didn't like it in the 90's, don't like it now. It's really that simple. Give games an appropriate rating and let people decide if they want to buy it.
Stock shortages aside, the telling story is that there's no "next-gen" software really making the charts. This is one of the many reasons I don't bother with being an early adopter. I wait a year or so so that the hardware kinks are ironed out and there's actually a fleshed out library of games.

Re: Random: GameStop's Stock Saga Is Getting Multiple Film And TV Adaptations
Not even a month since the occurrence and movie plans already made. Anything for a buck.
Re: Reggie Admits Switch Was A "Make Or Break Product" For Nintendo After Poor Performance Of Wii U
@ferryb001 Vgchartz don't have conclusive sources you can look at. Nintendo updates their official numbers quarterly. I'd way to see what Nintendo reports, actual numbers could be a little lower or a little higher.
Re: Fans Should 'Forget About Bayonetta 3' For Now, Says Platinum's Hideki Kamiya
A bit off topic, but I think Platinum needs to focus on games that have been announced instead of planning even more games. Lately their exciting updates are "We got another game in the works!" and I wonder what about the ones they've already been working on?
Re: Pokkén Tournament Producer Katsuhiro Harada Up For A Sequel, But Says It's Not Bandai Namco's Decision To Make
@TheFrenchiestFry Either in development hell or was cancelled, sadly. At one point it was supposed to be about 30% done, but then Harada made a statement saying they didn't want to split the fanbases with Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 out. The last update was Harada saying he wanted to release the game but his business side was questioning if he should. That was 2019
Re: Chinese Game Juggernaut Tencent To Acquire "Majority Stake" In Don't Starve Dev Klei Entertainment
31 merges/acquisitions/stake investments last year. And still some people refuse to believe that Tencent is slowly gaining control of the industry.
Re: Video: 13 Great Wii U Games Still Not on Switch
@AngelFox Indeed. Sadly many companies have realized that instead of backwards compatibility, they can just re-release the games for more money.
Re: Dead By Daylight Is Getting A Colourblind Mode Following Provocative Comments By One Of Its Designers
Re: Nintendo To Face Another Class Action Lawsuit For Switch "Joy-Con Drift"
@NathanTheAsian Without lawsuits and potential consequences Nintendo would not see the need to fix anything. The free repairs you brought up? Nintendo of America quietly rolled those out after the first lawsuit hit.
The more people that sue Nintendo over this, the better. If enough territories get on Nintendo's case, it'll motivate them to either fix the course issue or lower the price.
Re: Team17 Fully Acquires Golf With Your Friends Brand For £12 Million
I was a bit curious, and then I realized it was the publishers buying rights from a developer. Never a fan of publishers acquiring rights from people who actually MAKE games. Hopefully they are a decent publisher.
Re: Clubhouse Games Outsold Ring Fit Adventure, Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity And Paper Mario: The Origami King In France
Always interesting to see how different different games have differing levels of success depending on the region.
Re: The Switch Has Now Sold More Units Than The 3DS
Likely numbers given that the Switch has not lost any momentum this quarter, but I'm still waiting for the quarterly update. VGChartz is not the most reliable source of information, given that they are very hush-hush on how they accrue their data and there have been a couple times it differs wildly from official citations.
Re: Random: Epic Games Apparently Still Needs Your Help To "Free Fortnite"
Why would I help scum like Epic Games? Not only are they an anti-consumer brand, they have the audacity to act like they are "pro-consumer."
Besides, I'm been free of Fortnite all my life so my part is done.
Re: Bowser Explains Why Mario's Games Will Be Removed On 31st March 2021
@Deadlyblack Except that Nintendo games are notorious for having legs and continuing to sell throughout a consoles lifespan. It would honestly be not only-anti-consumer, but a horrible business practice to have more limited releases. Hopefully they realize that steady sales over years is better than a quick surge for a few months.
Re: Just When You Thought 2020 Couldn't Get Any Weirder, WaterMelon's Paprium Is Finally Finished
"Buy now or miss out forever! Buy in bulk and you'll get a discount per item. No release date, and absolutely no footage to show! Hardware that's been discontinued for around 25 years!"
This just screams scam artist to me, all the way.
Re: Atelier Ryza Developer Clarifies Its Stance On Video Game Censorship
Dang this comment section got heated fast. And the inevitable name-calling hath begun.
Never been a fan of censorship. Didn't like it in the 90's, don't like it now. It's really that simple. Give games an appropriate rating and let people decide if they want to buy it.
Re: Japanese Charts: Momotaro Dentetsu Beats Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity To Number One
Stock shortages aside, the telling story is that there's no "next-gen" software really making the charts. This is one of the many reasons I don't bother with being an early adopter. I wait a year or so so that the hardware kinks are ironed out and there's actually a fleshed out library of games.
