@RupeeClock how many purchased and dumped games over just downloading a copy. We need to be honest. Emulation has a lot of benefits and is important to preservation but people do need to fess up that a lot of people just want free stuff
It amuses me how everyone apparently gets up in arms about even though no one actually watches credits. This is just one of those "armchair causes" where people act offended over something they really don't care about just so they can feel good about themselves.
I am glad Nintendo still prioritizes gameplay over narrative. One of the reasons the industry is so bloated and starting to collapse on itself-look at all the layoffs and closures the past few years- is the trend of Turning games into interactive movies that hold your hand through the curated path the designers expect you to take.
Games can and have had great stories, but what separates them from other mediums is the interaction aspect. It boggles me that anyone would claim story is more essential.
@Qwiff I agree fully. I understand the notion of wanting to know the team but people going straight for "Nintendo is being cagey and disrespectful" are just typical online people looking to be enraged.
Most of the time when devs are targeted by people it's not for praise, but for harassment and complaing. And yes, it may benefit devs seeking other contracts. So long as developing get listed on the credits, it's all good.
Comment sections like this remind me that so many people do just feel entitled to free stuff. Yes, Nintendo is in their right to remove an unauthorized copy/paste version of their game. No, you are not entitled to play this game on PC free simply because you want to. This wasn't even a fan game with originality.
@LadyCharlie And that's the issue. Demanding all developers to keep it to 30 seconds while celebrities and others have long-winded nothing speeches is part of what makes the Game Awards a farce. It's not about honoring games or developers, it's a giant advertising show with celebrities now.
@nessisonett The FTC straight-up failed to prevent any evidence that this merger would be bad for the industry as a whole, or for paying customers. They only focused on the market leader Sony potentially being a hurt a little bit by this.
Aside from that, in 1 million plus documents that had to be turned over Phil never even discussed or mentioned the idea of making COD exclusive. Throw in the fact that Cod and a lot of other titles will now be on a subscription service for cheaper, whereas previously there were zero subscription alternatives, and all the evidence pointed toward this deal actually benefitting customers. Playstation users don't lose anything, Nintendo user will gain something, and GamePass users get a cheaper alternative method of paying.
There's also the fact that Jim Ryan explicitly countered himself in an internal email. Publicly he cried about how this would hurt him, whilst internally he said Playstation would be fine because Xbox would not feasibly force CoD off of Playstation.
@ottoecamn Agree with your take on "ignoring previous progress so we can act like we made the progress." As someone who almost always picks a female character in games when I can, I am a little irked that they are "rewriting the story" of a female character that already became capable and resourceful in her own right after a single time being rescued due to no experience.
Game looks really awesome, and if she plays well I'll gladly play as Amy. I just don't see the need to act like this is progressive or groundbreaking when it's ignoring the past to claim that.
It makes sense. When you've had a least two different remaster version and you've re-released the game on every single major platform since the X360/PS3 you're bound to get high sales.
GTA V wouldn't have the insanely high numbers it does if it didn't have a current gen version.
Won't be long before $70 is base standard for the regular edition of games across the board. As soon as one company gets away with it, others follow suit.
@SonOfDracula If credits are mainly for portfolio building and not for gamers, this is a non-issue. Anyone who worked on the OG Prime can cite that game on their resume, an those credits can be pulled for verification.
If anything, wanting your name on a game that you technically had no hand in would be a form of lying.
They are 100% correct, and while many comments here are focused on Nintendo's battle with unofficial Smash tournaments it is a fact that the hardcore Melee players would find something to complain about. Even if Nintendo did a straight HD port with no mechanical alteration, they would find something that "screws" with the meta and be unhappy. The zealousness and perfectionism of that fanbase is real.
@Uncle_Franklin I do believe there is a limit on what's worth being upset over and that spoilers are not the end of the world. People shouldn't be restricted from discussing games that are 20 years old because of spoilers, for example. Saying Aerith dies in FF VII is way past it's spoiler expiration date. Some people are also so intense on spoilers they will actually complain about trailers showing "too many new things."
That said, when stuff is leaked through unofficial channels I do believe it reasonable that people, say, do not want to know exactly how the plot twist goes in a game. I'm not sure what's revealed in this artbook leak, so I'm not sure if it's spoils story beats.
@Uncle_Franklin Not an accurate comparison. How would one be able to post the soccer score if the game hasn't even been played out yet? These leaks are in regards to something that is created but not available to be played yet.
First party lineup? That's tough. GameCube gave just about every relevant Nintendo franchise at the time a great new addition while also introducing new series like Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Pikmon.
On the other hand, the Holy Trinity of Super Mario World, LTTP, and Super Metroid is very hard to argue against. Not to mention the amazing Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country trilogy.
@dugan they are slowly upping their stake, likely to avoid scrutiny. At 7% it might not seem like much but they WILL be able to have a voice during investor sessions. They likely cannot dictate anything but the Saudi Arabia does now have more of a say than anyone actually buying the product.
They are putting stock in many things. It's a slow power move.
To all the people saying the executive should be investigated because there has to be more to the story and people don't just lash out like this without reason, I do not disagree but I wonder if you'd keep the same energy if it were not an executive and just two random people.
The question is, do you truly believe both stories should always be heard, or are you just hoping for the chance to prove how evil a company is you don't like? Hopefully it's the former, but I have a feeling some people are just hoping for a "Nintendo bad" story.
@CharlieGirl in the modern world, regardless of initial reception most media is discarded quickly for newer things. Sadly society just doesn't let many things have staying power.
@Bizzyb for some reason ambition is a requirement. Regardless of how fun a game is, if it's not fresh, new and innovative it hurts the score.

For me, it was a pretty good Direct. I don't try to hinge these on just one or two titles.
@SpaceboyScreams See, I have never really seen the correlation between quality of visuals and quality of the game's overall design in other fields. I've played several triple A games with absolutely gorgeous graphics and crisp textures, but the game itself would range from simply good, to mediocre, to downright boring.
Let's compare two big games from this year. Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West. Elden Ring took over the internet for months, people couldn't stop talking about it. It's on track to potentially be GOTY. It's been touted by many as the best game from From Software. Horizon Forbidden West was forgotten fairly quickly outside of dedicated communities. The one area where everyone agrees HFW is superior is the graphics. It has top of the line visuals, whereas Elden Ring graphically looks ten years old already. And yet Elden Ring dominated the conversation.
Would it be nice to have both state-of-the-art graphics AND gameplay design? Absolutely. But if I can only get one it's gameplay all day. Sword and Shield wasn't bad mainly for the visuals; it was generic and uninspired. Arceus felt like a true innovation for the series. It took risks, it felt fresh. I look past the visuals with ease when everything else is good.
Given that this show was more Beverly Hills 90210 than Resident Evil, I'm glad.
It really seemed like they wanted to tell a completely different story, but also wanted a brand name to attract viewers. So they slapped the RE name on it and made some haphazard connections.
@Axecon Spoilers suck and people often post them just for their 5 seconds of attention, but legal precedent? Dude, you can't just make make everything you don't like illegal.
@Piyo employee information can include private data. Even having your phone #, email and address leaked can be terrible because employees will now be vulnerable to doxxing or direct threat.

I'll never get one established studios are bought out just to put them in established franchises. If you want to bolster a current franchise, just hire more employees.

I really do love the self-entitlement that gets displayed from situations like this. because it's not a "full" direct and because 3rd party is a focus, it's immediately a "disappointmen."
I have seen this from the State of Play and Xbox showcase to. People will complain if it's anything less than a half hour of straight AAA 1st party system sellers. People need to get over themselves.
I will never understand people who defend DRM if the games are downloaded to a system and single-player. It serves zero purpose and benefits no one.
Doesn't matter how fast the service is fixed or many people are affected, it is an unnecessary inconvenience that does nothing fir the benefit of the game.
@conditionals metroidvania has become the next "RPG" in that the term is so vaguely used it has no identity.
If anything that involves exploration and unlocking paths fits the bill, Super Mario World is a metroidvania. You have to unlock the colored blocks to access a lot of the map.
@Yosher It's something that you have to adjust to if you want to be a gamer in this era. Not saying I agree with the business model but the industry as a whole has widely adapted it.
The truth is Nintendo was actually a little behind the times with the "release now, add in content later" approach. This became common practice during the X1/PS4 generation, mostly used by the big AAA companies but also being adapted by various indie or AA developers. It's gotten to the point now that more people are liable to be mad if a game DOESN'T receive post-launch updates.
No joke, I see more people upset over quality games brimming with content on day 1 not getting updates, than games with shallow content at launch slowly added in over time. So long as it's "supported" all is well in their eyes.
A significant margin between Switch and PS4 sales on ebaseball. Almost double on Switch. We've seen some 3rd party games do better on Switch but usually by nearly 2-to-1.
Kirby still doing well, maintaining 3rd. Takes a long time for most Nintendo games games to slip of the charts now.
@ShadowofTwilight22 Indeed we'll have to agree to disagree because both FF VI and Chrono Trigger are in my top 5 SNES games, so our tastes are widely different. Every likes different things.
I can say though that the nostalgia counter doesn't work on me because I did not play either of them until the late 2000's, well after they came out.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I won't deny advancements have been made in the JRPG genre, and technical limitations meant that Chrono trigger simply could not do some things done later on in the genre. THAT SAID, when I first played Chrono Trigger what most impressed me was how well-put together the package was. The battle system was simplistic yet deep thanks to the dual/triple tech system and enemies moving around the battle in real time. The pacing of the game was spot-on, always moving forward and managing to tie almost every occurrence into the ultimate goal of beating Lavos. It didn't stop and drag you off on a 3-hour side quest that had nothing to do with the main plot. And the overall length of the game was just right; no pointless filler, no padding just be able to say the game is 30+ hours long. It's a pretty short game, but I take quality of quantity every time.
That to me is what a long of games now, particularly the ones aiming for a 50-100 hour playtime fail at. The pacing goes up and down, pointless padding is thrown in to keep the game going, and sometimes the gameplay is overly convoluted in the attempt to be complex. One of the things that makes Chrono Trigger so amazing is how straightforward and simple it is in many aspects. The more complicated and lengthy you make a game, the more likely there are going to be boring areas or design flaws, or character segments nobody cares about.
@moodycat You have every right to express you're opinion, and I also have every right to say I think you're wrong.
I played Chrono Trigger for the first time more than a decade after it's initial release, and I instantly fell in love with it. A gripping story, simple yet deep and engaging battle mechanics, amazing graphics, likable characters, plenty of little secrets and Easter eggs to find, a top-level soundtrack, replayability off the charts thanks to the creation of NG+ and featuring numerous endings, impressive visuals and art design, AND a top-level soundtrack to boot.
@Handy_Man Happens in every piece of media, actually. The Director or Producer if any project (film, music, gaming) get like 99% of the credit, when in truth most modern media projects involves hundreds of people.
Even your small indie-games or retro ports have a credits lists with dozens of names sometimes, but people tend to only remember the Developer, Publisher, and maybe the creative director or producer.

Re: Soapbox: Chrono Cross Really Deserves To Come To Switch Before Chrono Trigger

Re: Random: One Pokémon Fan's Mission To Properly Credit Every Last Pokémon Designer
