Ever since Koei Tecmo teamed up with Nintendo to release Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, fans have been wondering what other IPs from the Nintendo library could be adapted into a Musou game.
In a recent interview with JP Games, Koei Tecmo president (and the producer of Samurai Warriors 5, we might add), Hisashi Koinuma, was asked what video game series he would most like to see get a Musou crossover. Interestingly it's Nintendo's mascot, Mario:
Q. It’s completely hypothetical, but since we’re on the subject of crossovers: personally, which Musou crossover would you like to see? For me, it would be Yakuza. Rampaging through the hordes with Kazuma Kiryu or Goro Majima would be awesome.
Hisashi Koinuma: If the series would work as an action game then it’s definitely possible. While I don’t have any ideas on how to make this a reality, I think Mario would be my pick.
This follows on from some comments made by Koei Tecmo producer and head of Team Ninja, Yosuke Hayashi, last October - when he said he hoped the Japanese developer and publisher could make "more interesting games", like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity:
"We started development on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity after Eiji Aonuma of Nintendo approached us. We thought we were done with Hyrule Warriors games, at least for the time being. The first game was like a celebration of Zelda and was full of characters from throughout the series. But then he approached us with this great idea...I hope we can make more interesting games like this in the future."
What kind of Musou-style Nintendo game would you like to see from Koei Tecmo in the future? Would Mario be your top pick or would you prefer something like Animal Crossing, Xenoblade Chronicles or Super Smash Bros.? Share your thoughts below.

Well Mario XCom happened so... Why not?
Musou, Musou, Atelier, Musou, Musou, Atelier, Musou, Musou, Atelier...
Yo, Koei, where's Dead or Alive at?
I have no idea how it would play, but I would love to see it.
How about enough with the Musou games and crossovers Tecmo!
They feel like fake character action games with such shallow action gameplay. Just stick to making more quality action games like Ninja Gaiden. Or better yet, use the Ninja Gaiden gameplay style instead, it's better than the Musou Warriors gameplay they've been making for the past two decades.
They should have made their own internal crossover Musou the best it could be first! Warriors All-Stars had so many glaring omissions — Rygar, Dana from Solomon's Key, Bomb Jack, some Monster Rancher critters, and a Wii U/Switch port could have added a Fatal Frame girl or two.
Musou games are silly but good fun. I see a lot of complaining that they aren’t deep enough but they’re not really supposed to be until you get to post-game content. In many ways, similar to Monster Hunter in that respect. The franchise I’d like to see as a musou is probably Star Wars. It would be perfect for it, considering grunts could be battle droids/stormtroopers. I think this dude actually said in the same interview that he’d like a Star Wars one, it’s just omitted here.
That sounds like a horrible idea, and since that seems to be the direction game companies are going in, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up happening.
I think it would be absolutely awful.
@nessisonett Comparing Musou to Monster Hunter is kind of ridiculous considering how much more of a threat the the single monsters are in MH compared to most of the enemies and bosses in most Musou games.
I'd rather have Mario Gaiden
Mario doesn't seem ideal for a Musou game. There are so many series that would fit better like Xenoblade, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Castlevania.....or another Hyrule Warriors
I gladly welcome the idea of another Hyrule Warriors game, but a Musou for Super Mario? It simply doesn't make sense unless they tried really hard to recreate movesets from various Mario games, some of them very niche.
Imagine Mario fighting along side Lu Bu.
My fellow commentators here seem rather down on this concept.
I wonder what people here would have responded to rumours of a Mario tactics crossover with Ubisoft, had anyone disclosed that notion.
For my part, I am intrigued by this notion. 3D Mario seems pretty adaptable, and the whimsical environments of a Mario game could be quite entertaining to romp through. If environmental interaction (that is, jumping off walls, Mario-Rabbids-style team jumps, etc.) and other Mario gameplay staples were incorporated to make something unique, I would give the idea serious attention.
Of course, the Mario character that works most naturally in a horde-fighting game is Donkey Kong, but I'll say no more...
@russell-marlow If you’d actually read my comment then you’d see that I was specifically comparing the postgame grinding loop to Monster Hunter. The systems in play only get fully utilised once you start accessing the very hardest content.
That would be cool, they could call it Mushroom Kingdom Warriors or Super Mario Warriors. The playable heroes could be Mario, Luigi, Toad, Toadette, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Kiddy Kong, Funky Kong, Nabby, Peach, Daisy, Birdo, Rosalina and Luma, Yoshi, Mallow, Geno, Koop, Poochy, Rapheal the Raven, etc. The villains could be Cranky Kong, Bowser, Wart, Fryguy, King Boo, King Bob-omb, King K. Rool, Booster, Fawful, KAOS, Cackletta, Kamek, Tatanga, Wario, Waluigi, Smithy, the Axem Rangers, the Origami King, Triclyde, Clawgrip, Mouser, the Koopalings, Boom Boom, Hookbill Koopa, Petey Piranha, Naval Piranha, the Reznors, etc.
While I agree with the skeptics on this one that isn't particularly exciting. Mario has done absolutely everything, from platforms to sports, to parties, to kart racers, to rpgs, to action adventures, to shooters, to pinball, to puzzles and even participates in a crossover fighter. A Muso game is probably the next stop at this point..
Mario with a sword fighting Luigi with an even bigger sword.
Ninja Meta Knight + Samurai Goroh could probably work.
... Wun can only hope.
I kinda like the idea of a more zoomed out Mario Galaxy style combat, with a spin attack and jump on dazed enemies. That could be fun for… a while?
@COVIDberry I'm not against the idea, I'm sure a Mario Musou would be fun. We've seen Mario characters fight in Smash bros, so it can be done. I just think other series with the Musou formula would be better.
Obviously you’d be gobbling up hundreds of goombas with piranha plants and chucking giant boomerangs and hammers at the koopas
The Matrix? Each level could have more and more people turning into an agent, until the last level is full of Smiths.
Really want a new Gundam Musou. They'd need to go back to the original stories they had for 1 & 2 though since, just like Xenoverse taught me, you can only re-watch the same stories so many times before it gets boring.
Mario warriors wouldnt work.
A game like SmashBros Warriors would work.
I'd rather have a Sonic Musou/Sonic Warriors. That would be amazing.
So the other characters would be playable again(Team Sonic Racing doesn't count, since they are driving),without people complaining they are stealing the spotligh from speed.Because its just a spin off not even done by SEGA..
Where is Super Slash Bros? A hack and slash mario dungeon crawler. Come on, Nintendo!
No thank you. Musou games are, such boring button mashers.
Enough with these Musou games, let’s have something new and interesting!
Hell yeah ! As long as they spend the time to adapt the gameplay to Mario, like they did with Age of Calamity, maybe going even deeper, I'd be down for that ! I love the idea that on the surface the idea doesn't really make sense, usually makes for interesting results !
LOL at the usual Nintendo Life "developer/publisher/producer would love to see..." headline.
A Mario Warriors would be cool!
Make it so!
Really amazing idea guys. Id love to see and play gundam, mario, smash bros, dragon ball, kingdom hearts, matrix, star wars, castlevania, and sonic like you all mentioned.
Personally I would like dragon quest dai warriors, jump musou, fairy tail, and demon hunter musou with all pillars playable even if it doesnt cover their story as well as a JoJo's Bizzare Adventure Musou with local co op.
My biggest issue with musou is no one makes the movesets and transformations as empowering as the Musou guys plus sometimes their creativity is so good it should inspire the anime but what really irks me is 1000s of enemies. The playable characters are always so good I know the generic enemies could be better if their were just less of them. I like when the games aren't overly complex and you have multiple tools, attacks, and options to defeat every single enemy and aren't limited to just one.
I'd love to see it happen if it played just like the first Hyrule Warriors. Imagine the fanservice they'd pump in with characters and weapons.
"Koei Tecmo's President Would Love To See A Super Mario Musou Crossover"
He would, me not.
Donkey Kong, Musou, y'all! Hordes of Kremlings!
I would love a Sonic one. Multiple characters. Multiple costumes/versions that can be turned into costumes. Multiple levels. Could see it.
give us mario warriors solely just for the idea of having wario rock up and just mow a ton of goombas down on his bike, it'd be golden.
no thanks I don't want to see a Mario Warriors game running ar 3 frames per second like Age of Calamity
I would absolutely love a Mario version. So long as they don't sexualize any of the characters, since Team Ninja likes to give characters big knockers. Thankfully that didn't happen in Age of Calamity so I think it should be fine.
Wow, super Mario musou? Give it to me right now
Would be neat. That being said I just want HWAoC II. I want to see where the story goes, especially considering ganondorf is still in a cave somewhere. Would many of them still die? Or would they all live through the destruction of the curse? (Well, if Nintendo would actually let that happen, that is.)
@russell-marlow you don't have to play those games of you don't like them, you know...
To be honest I'd prefer to see more violent musou like Ken's Rage or Berserk, BUT I can't say no to a new musou...
The Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem series work well for being musou spinoffs but Mario series having a musou spinoff? I don't know.
I dunno... I feel like I could see this working... are they saying it'll be difficult because they wanna include things that Mario is known for, like platforming? Or is it because Mario and friends aren't necessarily fighters? If not a Mario Warriors, then maybe a Musou game with Nintendo on the whole?
I'm all for it! The weirder the better.
Xenoblade would be better, but I'd be down for a Mario Warriors Game. Imagine just murdering hordes of goombas with Mario.
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Waluigi, Rosalina, E, Gadd, Bowser, Bowser Jr., King Boo, Petey Piranha, Melody, Captain Syrup, Ashley, Goombella, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Vivian, Count Bleck, Prince Peasley, Queen Bean, Fawful, Popple, Nabbit, FLUDD, Boom Boom, Pom Pom, Tatanga, Wart.
Quite a robust lineup! Could be very fun if Nintendo doesn't insist on pulling a Mario Kart and padding the roster with endless Babies, Koopalings, and powerup variants for Mario and Peach.
A new Mario Rabbids would be better. My hot take.
Honestly, I kinda want to have a Kirby Musou game more than a Mario one...
the most awful, the most generic and stupic genre musou wants to destroy Mario? lol
@Dragwhite you think bike and I think flatulence 😅
Man, there's so many people against this idea. I don't see why.
Sure the gameplay isn't as deep as certain other genres and series but it's probably still (a little) deeper than most would have you believe, the genre gets a little too much flack if you ask me.
And a Mario game of this kind could definitely very much work. If they can get Mario+Rabbids to work then this can also work.
I'm gonna enjoy this game even more now if it ever comes to fruition just because of all you nay sayers!
@jsty3105 combine them both together to get the most deadly weapon in wario's arsenal, the bike powered by his own gas
If they could keep it Mario and it's own thing and if they can find the right team to make it right and make it work, then sure why not would love to see what they could do, if it can work well in some way.
@Yosher The first Hyrule Warriors was terrible for this. It actually ruined Cia as a villain.
Wizzro and Volga got cool intros when you meet them on the battlefield, Cia's just... zooms in on her ass, and... other parts.
In my guide book for the game it has concept art and Cia's design has a comment somewhere along the lines of that her sexualised nature is to symbolise her greed.
Personally I think they simply took it too far. It's just unneccessary and undersells her as a character imo. Not that the Hyrule Warriors 1 plot was some marvel of storytelling, but it isn't an excuse to have poor characters. All they had to do was make her cool.
@VexingInsanity I agree that Cia was a little oversexualized but as I like to see it, there simply are people like that in the world, so they can exist in a world like Zelda too. I was never too big a Cia fan but I think she's alright. Having a sexy character isn't too big a deal.
That said whenever I played as Cia, I always used her Guardian of Time outfit because it was the least revealing by far which I always very much preferred. But she didn't ruin my experience with the game, I still think the game is real good fun as I spent quite a lot of hours on it.
Should probably also clarify that if they would have something like this in a Mario game, that might ruin the experience for me more because it just doesn't really fit that world. Which is also another reason why I thought they would never be interested in making a Mario Warriors game; the fact that they likely won't be allowed to make such a character for the Mario variant. But then Age of Calamity happened and I don't believe any such thing is in that game either, so, you know.
@Yosher I agree that sexy characters are fine! I mean look at Widowmaker in overwatch. It fits! It's just I feel they took Cia a bit too far and neglected that she is the villain over the fact that she's sexy.
It didn't ruin the game for me or anything, just the story took a hit in my own eyes but like I said it's not about the story and the story was good for what it needed to achieve. I think Cia is a fun character to play I just didn't like her portrayal. it's a minor issue overall. I love hyrule warriors (not enough to do all those adventure maps though).
I'd love to see that Mario crossover though. I've wanted it since the first Hyrule Warriors, I just never thought anything of the sort would happen. And by the sounds of this interview it seems like a longshot
@VexingInsanity Well, I think her redemption arc in the postgame that was introduced in Legends (and made it to the Switch's Definitive Edition) fixed that portion of her a little bit, she definitely wasn't acting so over the top sexualized anymore. But yeah I agree that up until that point, the sexy part was a bit too emphasized on, but it never really bothered me.
And hey, them saying they have interest in making a Mario Warriors is a start, right? It has to start somewhere. The word is out, now it just has to reach Nintendo and see if they see any worth in it. Who knows? They could pitch the idea to Nintendo, and Nintendo in turn can help with the game, like how they also helped with Age of Calamity.
Do I think it'll happen? Probably not. But never say never. Stranger things have happened.
We need more of these crossovers. Mario+Rabbids, Cadence of Hyrule, and Age of Calamity have all turned out to be good games and have been quite successful given their niche genres. Infusion of the Nintendo brand can sell almost any game, and experiences like these keep things fresh and interesting.
Nintendo is always looking to experiment and breath new ideas or life into their games, and they've got a golden opportunity staring them in the face.
@Whitestrider Because some people can't have opinions that have semblance of truth to them?
@nessisonett From what I've seen, it mostly amounts to defending certain outposts from enemy attack and going back and forth.
@russell-marlow as I said, if you don't like a genre, you can just Imagine that It doesn't even exist. I do that for the soulslike games, and guess what? It works! 😜
@Whitestrider Well, I can pretend people with poor taste don't exist... Yet we live in this type of reality :/
so would I. that would be so cool.
@russell-marlow Well yes. But the entire levelling systems and gear and such can be massively deep, similar to Monster Hunter. Which is what I was getting at.
Power Rangers Warriors. Make it happen!
No, not fitting to Mario universe at all...
Since we got a hyrule warriors sequel with the BOTW characters I thought it would be cool to have a FE warriors sequel with the three houses characters.
