@Kyloctopus Actually this is not just a simple aggregate of averages. If it was, Nintendo would be ahead of Square Enix, Dangen, and 505 Games. Still only 11th place, but higher up the list.
I went straight to Metacritic to see how they actually devise this list, and truth be told it is actually far too convoluted. They have a "points" system with a lot of factors with arbitrary scores awarded for each category.
It's been a long time since I even had any hype for this. It was announced and then sort of vanished into obscurity. Finding out it was it was live service only put my interest in the negative.
And to think live service is the route Platinum Games wants to go. How many failures do there need to be before companies learn? it's like the FPS craze of the 360/PS3 era. Everyone tried to cash in on the COD madness but most FPS games from that gen were actually financial failures due to oversaturation and lack of creativity.
@BloodNinja people would have a genuine concern if it was in regards to exclusivity. The public declaration by Sony that Bungie will retain its independence and MS saying they want to keep many titles multiplat has been assuring, but it's not exactly a pleasant thought that a series you love could become exclusive to the plastic box you don't own.
Bringing this up will obviously open up the floodgates of speculation, and for good reason. The acquisition have started, and I imagine we'll be seeing quite a few more bug deals before it's over.
Joy. Another company indicating they want to join the live service trend. Not only is the landscape saturated, the games more often than not are bloated, buggy services that die before even reaching a coherent state.
Graphics do matter to me in terms of art direction, because that can set the mood and tone. Resolution hardly ever bothers me. It's all about creating a larger picture of a different world.
To step outside if Nintendo, some people gripe on the dumbest graphical things that would do nothing to the integral experience. PS5 users are saying GOW Ragnarok must have must feature trees that can be chopped down, and people criticized Halo for the fruit physics of all things.
@inenai except companies are looking to utilize NFT's as way to make a quick buck by declaring features that can be done without it.
Proof of ownership and reselling goods do not need blockchain to work, even in the digital world. There are already means to verify your digital library, and digital storefronts for trading digital goods. Also, NFT's as they are pushed now only make money by getting someone to buy it for more than you did. It is an investment, and one that many rightly fear will turn their escapist hobby of fun into a tiresome job where everyone is just plugging away trying to earn something they can resell.
Crypto and blockchain will be more feasible when used as a decentralized currency, the problem is that these game publishers are pushing them as centralized investments. Ubisoft NFT's won't mean anything in the ecosystem of EA, or Take-Two right now.
@rubiednin To both of your points. One, avoiding spoilers has gotten increasingly difficult to the point that avoiding social media entirely is almost needed. I've gotten YouTube videos with spoilers in the title directly in my feed.
Second, if a game is cracked, emulated, and made available for download before it even hits store shelves in an official capacity it does hurt a company financially. I certainly do not endorse an online restriction nor do I believe in some worldwide crackdown on retailers because someone broke a a contract clause, but do not act like this causes no financial damage.
While Nintendo can be exceedingly harsh with how they go after ROM sites and shut down fan games, stuff like this makes me see the other side of the coin.
For some reason people vehemently aim to acquire, crack, and emulate Nintendo titles before they even release to the general public. Why? Selfishness and greed, that's why. I don't buy any attempt at a moral argument. "We want people to be able to demo the game. Nintendo is horrible, so this is us striking back! They deserve this!"
No, people just want free s***, and that is the bottom line. The Switch is easy to crack, so crack away they go.
@Doofenshmirtz Indeed. There comes a point where it is okay for a series to end. Too many series have been dragged through the mud by uninspired sequels, including times where fans just needed that new game that they regretted in the long run.
@Harmonie not really. Quality is subjective to everyone's different tastes and appeal. While it is true that sales do not equal quality, sales are a quantifiable and objective measurement while quality is not. You call these games ridiculously overpriced, cheaply made remakes. Millions will disagree with you. Are they objectively wrong? No. Are you objectively wrong? No. Ot is all down to preference.
Been looking forward to this one. I can wait if it means the porting and translation will be done will. It was one of the Super Famicon's best beat 'em ups.
Gotta say, that artwork that tries to depict the original cover with the modern character styles doesn't look good.
Regardless of the reason, I do not see the value as of right now.
But to go deeper... At the current moment, any licensing fees with MS/Rare mean jack because we don't even get those games at launch- we aren't even provided with a date or an estimation.
And Sega were paid very well to put a bunch a bunch of their games on the service that are widely available elsewhere, for direct purchase? If so, Nintendo made an incompetent business move. There's so many ways to play SOR2, Sonic 2, and Golden Axe that it's unreal... we aren't even getting the full trilogies for those. I've got access to many of these games through other channels, so there is no value in it for me.
Still on the fence about this one, but I actually like this feature myself. I know, how dare I not bash every single thing about Pokemon.
I have skipped some of the games lately and there have definitely been design decisions I did not like, but I swear some people are just waiting for pokemon news 24/7 so they can smash their keyboards and scream about how every thing is "wrong."
And I'm laughing at people losing their minds because the general idea of what the final boss battle is gets "spoiled". People have gotten so sensitive, it's going to get to the point where if you say "The aesthetics of the fiery lava stage are really great," people will lose their minds and scream "Wah, now that stage has been spoiled for me!"
@BloodNinja A number of fanboys had a serious meltdown on Twitter and reddit when Sony started porting more games to PC. You'd be surprised at how people can tie something like exclusivity to their livelihood.
Me, I've never understood the console war mentality. A game being available on multiple platform never stopped me from enjoying it. When games leap from Switch to PC or elsewhere I'm glad more people get to experience them. Likewise when PC games make it to consoles. Some people can only enjoy "exclusive" games, though.
@k8sMum that is what people obsessed with sales forget. They get caught up in franchise and console wars, using sales figures as ammunition. However, all these sales figures show companies is the masses will buy anything, so they have no need to improve.
@mlj11 Recycling assets is a good way to keep down both development time as well as costs. A few areas definitely looked identical to the first game but some looked brand new. The trailer shows off the new characters and what looks like a new aerial/juggle system. I also remember the first screenshots we saw showed a bridge as well the carnival area from the 1994 game.
As for keeping the same original character models, they already looked great so what is the point in redoing them for a game that is made in the same style? Not everything needs to be 100% original and built from scratch. Like I said, keep down development time and costs, and free up time to work on other things.
The Game Awards are like Nerd Christmas? I must respectfully disagree. They don't mean anything anymore in the grand scheme of things, especially with the disconnect that comes from the voters primarily being insiders and elitists that decide things behind closed doors.
@Toads-Friend Japan largely adheres to a minimalist lifestyle as a culture norm, and to an extent I have to respect it. Here in the USA, a lot of people are so obsessed with consumerism they will go in debt to own hundreds or thousands of items from books/manga/games/figurines that will never be interacted with, only sit on a shelve and collect dust. Heck, I'm guilty of it myself to an extent.
@Bunkerneath Metroid Dread in October. Warioware: get it together on 9/10. Cruise'N Blast on 9/14. Mario Party Superstars on 10/29. SMT V on 11/12. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on 11/19. Advance Wars reboot on 12/3.
2022 has Pokemon Legends: Arceus on 1/28. Project Triangle Strategy, BOTW 2, and Splatoon 3 are all slated for 2022 as well.
Or do most of these not count because they aren't developed "in-house?"
I recognize that amusement park screenshot from The title that is getting localized as "River City Girls Zero." Nice little touch, hopefully we get more details like that.
@BloodNinja Allow me to rephrase this then, because I certainly did not discredit myself.
Anyone who says that it is pointless to buy a multiplat on Switch because it will run worse than it does on Xbox or Playstation, is unknowingly shooting themselves in the foot unless they play on PC.
This is mainly targeted at Sony loyalists and the like who point out Switch's inferior hardware capability. While their point is true, they are also proving their own platform of choice is no good by their standards, because by that logic they should never buy third party on any console since PC's are stronger. As it is, PS5 is already seeing that need dynamic resolution limited at 1080p in order to get 60FPS. I played games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Witcher 3 on my PS4, and the overall performance was about on par with what people consider "unacceptable" on Switch.
My point is this: Console players who get really picky about framerate/graphical fidelity are losing their own argument. There are already PC components that outperform the Series X and PS5. It is literally pointless for ANY console loyalist to get into the argument of performance, because PC always has and always will dominate in that field.
Short version: Anyone unwilling to buy Switch ports purely because of performance should have a gaming PC, as I do.
@BloodNinja By your logic buying almost anything on a console that is available on PC is a ripoff, since PC's can achieve higher graphical fidelity and better framerates a lot of the time. My GTX 1080 achieves better performance than my PS4 or XOne.
That is the fallacy of us this "downgraded ports are not worth the money," because the argument has to then apply to everything that is not the strongest hardware on the scene. It's not an argument that can be applied in a bubble.
Two things would subside the anger, and I think they are both reasonable:
1. Increase the pace of output. We go several months with no new additions, and this time we got nothing added on the NES side. The old monthly add-ons were much nicer, nowadays we wonder if Nintendo briefly forgets about NSO entirely.
2. add at least one better known game in each delivery. That actually worked with the DKC games. They released one per update alongside some unknown titles, and people were down with that.
@VoidofLight Was it primarily designed for PC first?
I would think that console versions should be the base, and then PC versions should be the ports. All consoles (not just Switch), are inferior spec-wise and should be optimized, whereas PC players can usually brute-force with powerful hardware or at the very least turn down their settings to get better performance.
The NSO offerings Japan gets and the showcases that appear in Japan Directs but not NA ones are kind of proving Nintendo doesn't care as much for the western market right now.
It was one thing for games to be released later on Switch, and announced as such. Now we've got DLC and games that get a release date and are magically unavailable when all other systems are good to go.
Whether it's down to incompetent developers or horribly flawed Nintendo background systems, they need to get it sorted out. I don't care who's at fault, I just want them to figure it out and fix it.
A physical release with all of these updates and DLC might very well match or surpass the classic Streets of Rage 2 for me. The base version of 4 is already amazing.
Value is subjective to each person. I don't think Call of Duty is worth $60 each year, literally the same game with a slightly different touch of paint. But millions of people enjoy it.
I will say that at the end of the day, how much you enjoy something is the factor. 2D vs 3D, 10 hours vs. 30 hours is irrelevant. It's a matter of quality, and how much fun you think you will have. I have played many 10-15 hour games that were way more fun than 50 hours slogs.
@citizenerased they are not wrong. Even in this article they imply some sort of inequality even though every region has a significant number of women in the workplace. You can't force a 50/50 ratio.
So long as game quality doesn't suffer I'm fine with all this.
Unfortunately several companies have dipped in quality because they focused so much on being able to say they were diverse, they forgot to focus on a good product.
People come up with the most asinine theories over every nugget of information. You're not being creative and you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.
@T317 Ah yes, it can never ben the the leakers were wrong or making **** up, it's always Nintendo's fault we didn't get what random internet peeps tell us.
99% of leakers due it purely for attention and ego. They are not doing some great public service by announcing stuff ahead of time, they are not providing Nintendo with "free advertising". It's all about feeling gratified, and they are willing to lie to do it.
Don't believe leakers, even the ones with a "100% track record."
@HamatoYoshi Or this twitter babies can stop being such whiny entitled toddlers who feel entitled to what they want, when they want.
I'm looking forward to Bayonetta 3 myself, but I'm well aware that I'm not "owed it." If it's delayed or cancelled, thems the breaks. I didn't front Platinum or Nintendo money for the game already so technically I'm owed nothing.
Widescreen does not automatically make a game better. Older games were designed with the 4:3 ratio in mind, and because of that a widescreen alteration will more than likely just make the game like incredibly empty. There won't be much to fill in that extra space, and if there IS it will throw off the pacing of the game.
What I'm saying is, not every game needs or even benefits from all modern trends.

Don't believe leakers, even the ones with a "100% track record."
Re: UK Retailer GAME Gives Away Euro 2020 Pokémon Cards, Scalpers Flip Them Instantly
Something that was a fun hobby in the 90's, turned into nothing more than a money-making scheme at the expense of genuine fans.
What a world we live in.
Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3
@HamatoYoshi Or this twitter babies can stop being such whiny entitled toddlers who feel entitled to what they want, when they want.
I'm looking forward to Bayonetta 3 myself, but I'm well aware that I'm not "owed it." If it's delayed or cancelled, thems the breaks. I didn't front Platinum or Nintendo money for the game already so technically I'm owed nothing.
Re: Random: SNES Hacker Working On Widescreen Support For Super Mario World
Widescreen does not automatically make a game better.
