Re: Opinion: Steam Deck Fans Are Seriously Underestimating The Switch 2

stipey

I love my Steam Deck, and most of my gaming this year has been on it. But man I have to faff around with it a lot, messing with control settings, install packages, graphics etc.

Was playing LA Noire the other day on Steam Deck, and the game kept trying to give me a mouse cursor, losing my controller, and booting me out after pausing because I disconnected from the Rockstar servers. Reconnecting my Pro Controllers via Bluetooth is a constant pain.

There’s so much freedom on Steam Deck to run whatever you like, how you like, but the QOL of the Switch just makes a lot of sense to me. I’ll have both, but I know the Switch will keep my heart.

Re: Feature: "A Puzzle Should Be Structured Like A Good Joke" - The Influences & Craft Behind 'Lorelei And The Laser Eyes'

stipey

Great interview, thanks! I absolutely loved this game, both on an artistic level, and the experience of playing it with my girlfriend and making that little book full of notes. As it turns out, we found we can both solve puzzles that would have taken forever for the other to figure out.

This one and UFO 50 are currently tied for my games of the year.

Re: Players Need To Start "Feeling Comfortable" With Not Owning Games, Says Ubisoft Subs Boss

stipey

So… I got rid of all the dvds I had of my favourite shows because they were all on Netflix. Then, all of a sudden, they weren’t anymore.

A few were on Disney. Some were on Amazon. I have to have multiple monthly subs to keep access to the old shows I watch for fun? Well, quite a few of my favourite shows are just gone from any streamer now.

So for now, it’s off to the high seas, me hearties!

Ubisoft (as with all publicly traded publishers) have no interest in its legacy content until it can continue to draw a profit from it into the future.

Re: Takaya Imamura's New Game Will Take Inspiration From Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

stipey

The game looks super reminiscent of both the SNES Dragon Ball adventures and Kojima’s early adventure games. Love that style, doubt we’d ever see it translated into English [EDIT: Never mind, looks like it is! Read the article, Stipey… What a nice surprise!].

I wonder if the Zelda influence he’s talking about is how you make the world feel full and make the player feel invested enough in side quests that they’re not just ticking boxes. There’s something beautiful in Tears of the Kingdom’s side quests where you hear about them, and immediately want to investigate without necessarily even noticing that it’s been added to your quest list.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope Dev Is "Not Worried" About Game's Initial Sales

stipey

“…with the newly-introduced features like freer movement and the Sparks mechanic making the sequel a more attractive title than that which came before“

Others have touched on this, but these are two of the several reasons that Sparks of Hope is not as good as the original game. Seems like all the things they added to make it bigger and “better” are the actual reasons that it doesn’t work as well—free-moving hubs, more levels etc. The level of care in the experience doesn’t seem to be there.

Such a shame.

Re: Soapbox: Returning To The Great Plateau In Zelda: TOTK Felt Like Coming Home

stipey

@larryisaman It never really gave me that sense though, it felt like there was a way you were meant to do it, but it was still frustrating to find my way around. Like you can go off and do your own thing if you want to, but there’s a disappointing lack of reward for exploring on the Sky Islands.

I’ve been watching my gf (who’s never played a Zelda game) exploring much more than I did on the Sky Islands, and she keeps getting sad when she makes it to the top of something tricky and finds nothing to reward her for it.

I’m glad that you (and others) were into it from the start, but I’ve had a few people tell me they are really not into the game and I have to persuade them to just keep pushing.

As for people not playing BotW first, there have been enough reviews that say TotK makes BotW feel like a rough draft; I’d probably wanna jump straight into the new one too after reading that, haha.

Re: Soapbox: Returning To The Great Plateau In Zelda: TOTK Felt Like Coming Home

stipey

I actually think they bungled the new tutorial level in TotK, and the Great Plateau is a great reminder of how to nail the intro. While the Great Plateau kind of invisibly guides and teaches you, the Sky Islands feels linear but also confusing. Like all the little set pieces along the way imply there’s a way you’re “meant” to do it, but it’s frustrating to find the path. I had such negative feelings about the game until the very last mandatory Sky Islands shrine, and it was only upon reaching the ground that the game really started to blossom.

I am absolutely in love with TotK now, but I really feel that the same careful design wasn’t carried over from the Great Plateau in the experience of those early hours.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope 'The Last Spark Hunter' DLC Teased

stipey

I definitely don’t think of it as a dud, but a lot of the changes to accommodate making the game bigger took away a lot of the tightness and charm of the original. I ended up falling off, and I will go back at some point, but I just don’t feel the same enthusiasm for it as I did the first one.

Re: Nintendo Download: 22nd December (North America)

stipey

Cannot warn people away from the Cooking & Publishing games enough. This week it’s Fight Club.

All of these games are just a series of dull questions, where 30 questions pop up and you have to give the same answer every time they ask the same question. Every game is exactly the same.

Re: Pilotwings 64's 'Birdman' Stage Is Significantly More Stressful On Switch

stipey

I remember playing this as a kid, but I think I may have just been flying around already-unlocked levels. I’m having a great time playing it, but it’s nothing like I remember!

Point is, I didn’t know how to do the wingman level this time around, so thought it was a weird control scheme when I stumbled upon needing both A and B to flap, but didn’t realise it was wrong.

Re: Mini Metro Developer Responds To Knock-Off Release On Switch eShop

stipey

@HeadPirate That’s not all quite right. A trademarked name could be considered significant enough to take legal action over—remember Bethesda forcing Mojang to change the name of “Scrolls” because they had a copyright on Elder Scrolls?

Also, by including both “Mini” and “Metro” in the title, this seems to fall more into the realm of trying to dupe people into thinking this is the original. If you search for the original, this will come up, and it looks likely that they’re betting on some people going for the cheaper version instead. Seems pretty clear they’re trying to use the original IP to make sales on their own game.

Re: Star Fox Character Designer Wants Nintendo To Port The Wii U Entry To Switch

stipey

I adored that game. I thought it was the peak of Platinum trying weird control schemes for their games. It took a while to get used to, but really clicked when it did. It was just so novel and interesting, and that’s exactly what I want out of games.

I really dislike the move towards uniformity in controls. So many action games succeed or fail on the feel of the game, and experimental controls can go a long way to defining the feel.

Re: The Wii U Gets Another New Game As 2.5D Platformer 'Pad Of Time' Launches Next Week

stipey

Yeah I’m not sure what Nintendolife saw that “looks great”, but I promise you that game is going to be absolutely no fun to play.

Characters appear floaty and don’t even look like they’re in the level. Platforming looks uninspired, just blocks to jump on. And those last few shots of bosses—oh boy. No personality in their design. Don’t be fooled by the “N64-inspired” claim; that’s just an excuse for this game looking nasty.

Re: Nintendo Download: 31st March (Europe)

stipey

Did the Switch eventually become oversaturated to the point that it’s not profitable to publish to or something? Totally agree with @shgamer that it really feels like it’s lost momentum and people are abandoning it.

Re: Bayonetta 3's Lead Designer Actually Left PlatinumGames Two Years Ago

stipey

I feel pretty uncomfortable about articles like these. This poor guy is basically getting doxxed for the sake of getting some clicks implying Bayonetta’s troubled development. Because that’s obviously the only point of doing that—it wouldn’t be interesting to say it about the new Kirby game, right?

Also, sure he’s gone to work for “Xbox’s” Tango Gameworks, but it’s actually also Shinji Mikami’s Tango Gameworks—Mikami being one of the original founders of Platinum. You can imply anything about this dude’s departure, but you don’t know why he left or who’s replaced him. Anything else is conjecture and a weird invasion of some game worker’s privacy.

Re: Talking Point: Should The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Library Expand Faster?

stipey

I was stupid and jumped in right away, expecting that I could spend a few hours on the existing N64 games, and that it would grow weekly until there was a decent library. I’ve played for maybe an hour all together? I gave up on Zelda when it started juddering in the first area.

…I’m not sure why my expectations were so high; I guess it was just because the price was so insanely high to start with?
