Nintendo's Switch Online Expansion Pack service has announced the next N64 for release for the month of February. It's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, originally released in 2000.
This game contains much darker themes than the previous Zelda entries and sees Link having to save the land of Termina in just three days before the Moon comes crashing down. During the N64 generation, it required the Expansion Pak device.
This title will follow on from the release of Banjo-Kazooie, which is out now on the Switch Online Expansion Pack service. To play these games, you'll need to subscribe to Nintendo's online service and pay an additional fee to access the N64 and Sega Mega Drive libraries.
Is this a game you've been waiting to play on Switch's online service? Leave a comment below.
This will get a few people excited
Nice! The rollout may be slower than ideal, but at least it's consistent. Not only that, but we're basically getting these games in the order I want to play them.
I wish it could be the 3DS version. Same goes for Ocarina of Time. It would be really nice to play those games on my TV with the enhancements those versions had.
@Savino yea, kind of stinks the base owners are being left in the dust. Then again, I kind of get it. They want people to upgrade.
@imgrowinglegs Ocarina yes. Majora maybe. The 3DS version breaks as much as it enhances.
I'll be looking forward to playing this one again.
I guess it's too much to hope for a 3DS style remaster for Switch, huh? I don't want to pay monthly fees, I'd rather purchase it once and play it indefinitely.
Got the expansion day one. I like the n64 games they’ve released, but I wasn’t expecting them to abandon the other services. Hopefully we get more snes nes and genesis games regularly.
I choose to believe after the backlash they immediately made sure to focus on the absolute best N64 games to get out ASAP.
F-zero x better be around the corner. So far me upgrading my switch online pass has been a waste of money but seems like more interesting games are dropping monthly. Love OOT, but I found Majoras mask odd to play and like every Zelda game I get stuck at some point in the game and STILL can’t get by with YouTube assistance. OOT I got all the way to the shadow link boss fight in water temple and STILL couldn’t beat it with the help of YouTube.
My favourite game. Anticipating how many broken graphical effects and bugs this version will have. This is a game where the mood and tone are super important, and if the fog effects and textures are broken in this game just like in Ocarina, then...I guess I won't be too surprised. :/
Wow I'm impressed!
Haven't even had time to play Ocarina of Time yet
It's a really great game (it's better than Ocarina, in my opinion), but I already have the 3DS version, which is even better.
One game per month, or so. Drip..... drip...... drip......
Happened with the Gamecube, the Wii, the Wii U, 3DS, and now the Switch.
Wherever Ocarina goes, Majora always follows....
Good trend of dropping a game and announcing the next month's game in NSO service. Yes, a drip feed this is but at least it has been consistent.
@imgrowinglegs yeah and we get to BUY the game and keep it ourselves instead of having to PAY A SUBSCRIPTION
So is it safe to assume rental via subscription is the future for retro Nintendo games? I would have paid the upgrade fee again to download them on the Switch. Virtual console had weekly releases and NSO has monthly release. I wish they didn’t have to fix something that wasn’t broken (Virtual console). Don’t want to spend hours on games only to have the save data all disappear when Nintendo one day discontinues the expansion pak.
My all time LEAST favorite Zelda (followed very closely by Skyward Sword) I know a lot of people liked this one and that’s fair. But, the time mechanic and the constant pressure to rush or be at certain places at precise times, stole away from what makes Zelda, “Zelda.” Which is to say, being allowed to get lost and explore. So, luckily for my wallet, this ain’t the Wave Race I’m looking for. Still not subbin’
I'm currently playing the 3DS version and having a lot of fun.
@Savino Realistically, what NES and SNES games would you still expect to see, beyond maybe Earthbound? Nintendo has essentially made available just about every first party title they have on those consoles. Most third-party companies that are still actively publishing games aren’t going to want to license them to Nintendo to make available for free when they can sell collections and charge for them elsewhere, like Konami did with Castlevania.
@thesilverbrick I was just thinking about this, because as much as I would love Nintendo to bring a whole lot more SNES/NES games, Nintendo doesn't have the rights for them, and that really sucks.
So I guess N64 and Sega Genesis will be getting all the attention and the big games, while SNES/NES will get fewer of an already very slow upload.
The terrible fate is the condition this game is going to be in when it arrives on the Expansion Pass service.
I guess Kirby 64 Crystal Shards is coming in March to celebrate the anniversary. Nintendo needs to do better when it comes to the performance of these games being added to NSO.
@NintendoByNature They managed to get me to not renew instead.
Pretty cool but isn’t OOT not very well emulated?
Would be cool if they ported over the 3ds remasters they made, and just charged us for it! I just can't see myself buying this service, on top of the bad switch online, and the drip feeding, this service is just overpriced.
Also cool for people who never played the game, Hope you Enjoy it! (:
I hope they'll announce Smash 64 sometime this year maybe in a Nintendo Direct as an update on future titles for the service.
One can hope
Played both the originals on the n64 and both remasters on the 3ds, in this case I'd say the n64 version of MM is better than the 3ds version, obviously not visual wise but due to some of the changes they made makes me feel like it killed the atmosphere of the game.
Anyways, my backlog of games grows yet again.
This is one of my all time favorite games. Favorite Zelda for sure.
@imgrowinglegs The 3DS version changes some stuff for the worse. The OOT port, though, is really terrific.
Majoras Mask has one of my favorite Zelda songs ever, of all time...the hauntingly beautiful Astral Observatory.
This song once brought a tear to my eye...
@Snatcher - What do you mean every month? The Expansion Pass is only available as a yearly subscription, you can't get it monthly.
@Mikmoomamimocki - "The OOT port..."
Did you just call the 3DS remake a port?
This was probably the one I was most excited for, so it's nice to know it's just around the corner. Here's hoping F-Zero isn't far behind.
@imgrowinglegs Ughhh... no. The DS version ruined Zora swimming and the boss fights. Such a terrible remake.
@NeonPizza how did they mess up Skyward Sword HD?
@HammerKirby They didn't.
Yep, it’s one of my favourite Zeldas and I’ve been meaning to attempt a three heart run of it
Really wish the expansion pack was monthly.
@aznable I got a 3DS earlier this year specifically to play OoT and MM I suspected Nintendo would do sloppy N64 ports after seeing how they handled Mario 3D all stars
@FullMetalWesker Yes, I was going to edit that, my bad LOL.
@Bizzyb Bro, same here!
@Mikmoomamimocki What specifically is worse? It's been a long while since I've played either, so I'm unaware and curious.
@Savino They’ve said there’ll be more NES and SNES games, but they’ve also not released any new ones since summer.
@KimBread Changes to certain mechanics just don't feel very good. I don't want to go through and list them all, but movement mechanics for the Zora, Deku, and Goron were all changed to be slower.
Boss fights are also redone for "clarity" but this also removes some of the more open ended aspects of boss fights. Odolwa for instance could be attacked and damaged in a few different patterns in the original. In the remake you HAVE to use the Deku flower in the room to fly up on the air and drop Deku Nuts to stun him.
There are more things, changes to the bombers notebook the save system, and some of the visual changes for instance but the first two parts are the big ones.
Still not worth the money considering I can play it on the 3ds. I know that version has flaws but the positives outweigh the negatives.
1. How is being able to save any time a bad thing(same with making the bombers book better)
2.only the soda mask has as drastic of changes as you are saying they do.
3. The bosses could be better but they were very easy in the original.
I am very much looking forward to this, and February is my birthday month, so thank you!
I didn’t care much for MM when it originally released as I was still quite young, and I didn’t enjoy much, the time mechanic… however, I’ve come a long way over the decades since, playing Dead Rising and such. Also, the N64 NSO’s Suspend Point feature will very much come in handy for this, too…
One game a month is ok i guess if they stick with that, wish it was like 2 or 3 games at a time though.
Good game but we already have a Zelda game on the service, why not give us F-Zero first?
Or here a crazy idea. Why not... release MORE than one game?
@Hero-of-WiiU Use the hammer, dog. Shadow Link doesn't have it and can't mirror your moves.
It's great that N64 games are being added monthly, but I'm more interested right now in when they are going to restock the N64 controllers on the My Nintendo Store! For me most N64 games just don't feel right without the original controller design.
@nessisonett Why do you say that?
This game can be played safely. The real moon is moving away from earth by 3.8 cm per year.
So if you upgrade, Nintendo will suddenly releaase new NES/SNES games especially for you? 🤨
@imgrowinglegs I would also take the N64 version, but with 60 fps upgrade. The 20 fps from the N64 version and also the 30 fps from the 3DS version are just no more acceptable to me.
Do we just not get any NES, SNES or Megadrive games anymore? What a waste of money. I will be reducing my subscription next year.
I tried to play the game on VC a while ago and jesus this didn't age so well. I really wanted to play the 3DS version then but heard some quite convincing things about why the original is still a bit better. Today I couldn't exactly tell if i wouldn't still prefer the visual upgrade. Usually I'm really not a huge graphics guy, but when blocky graphics, framerate and textureresolution really interfere with how you perceive the game, it becomes a problem for me and N64 games really didn't age very well on that front.
But then again, its fine to see it just coming to that service as I planned to get it at some point at least for a year and with the AC DLC, BK and now MM theres quite some nice incentive.
For everyone who didn't play MM:
Maybe play OoT before to get into it (also to get used to the graphics and controls) then its still one of the most original games of all time. 20 yrs ago I wouldn't have thought so, but today I really like MM more than OoT. The OoT formula got refined over and over again so today it barely makes sense to play OoT again. MM still is a unique piece of videogame and the funniest thing about it is that Aonuma patched MM together in like .. a year or so and really didn't expect it to have the impact it then had.
I wish Nintendo would hire/form another talented studio like Retro Studios which would do nothing but revamp games like MM for the next Switch generation.
MM has so much potential still today with loop games popping up quite a lot these days (Outer Wilds, Deathloop ...) but I don't see mainstream folks really getting into that old port. They should really make more use of the potential of some old IPs like this one.
Generally I think they should continue making "closed worlds" Zelda games like OoT and MM along with BotW-style open worlds just like they do 2D and 3D metroids as different branches. Or 2D and 3D Mariogames. Love BotW but don't wanna give up on Skyward Swords linear gamedesign.
In a year of so many quality games being announced for release, and likely even more that haven’t, if I paid for this slow drip service I still wouldn’t be playing N64 games over Advanced Wars, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, and BOTW 3. I’m still holding out for a slow year when the catalogue has filled out.
Oh I'm so excited... to dust off my 3DS and play Majora's Mask on it again. Thanks for reminding me of that gem!
My money is on Pokemon Snap next. And why are people still whining about the NSO expansion? Don’t like it, don’t buy it
Pretty cool. I already got the 2 games I was most excited for from the Direct so I'm content. Couldn't really vibe with Ocarina of Time though which kind of worries me. Is this one still fun to play if you didn't like OoT?
We also needed the expansion to play this on the n64
Cool, I'm sure I'll check this one out soon. I'm glad the trickle is increasing a little. But it's still too slow for my taste.
I know everyone's complaining about a drip feed, but if it turns out to be one per month that's more than enough for me. As a key worker with kids, I want to play most of the games on this service and have been slowly chipping away, but frankly don't have the time to blast through each one in a few days. Everyone's in a different situation and I get that, but personally this strategy suits me fine.
hey reggie give us mother 3
Watch we get a version that crashes constantly because they forgot to solve the Expansion Pak issue ala the GameCube version
@imgrowinglegs as Jon showed in the ranking Zelda remasters video: 3ds Majora is only an upgrade visually, they nerfed a lot of things that they shouldn't have nerfed.
(Zora swimming, bosses, the ice arrows, jumping as deku link.. )
But I agree that OOT 3D is the best version of an amazing game!!
They did reuse A LOT of assets from OOT. But everyone is a completely different person, and the world is brand new as well!
This game also felt like it got more Acton and exploration in sooner. I never really liked the young Link dungeons, so it's n nice we're skipping straight to some more complicated dungeons!
@Indielink Nah, you can defeat Odolwa in the remakes without being Deku Link; I did and I'm not the best at that kind of thing.
@blindsquarel The Soda mask?
The cover has got a double meaning now. Expansion pak required.....
How are we supposed to play this before DK64? My original N64 got the Expansion Pack through DK64. So I need DK64 to play LoZ:MM
@Hero-of-WiiU I'm holding off on the upgrade until F-Zero X is released. There are other interesting games available, like Majora, but they will still be there when I get there. Because the service doesn't remove any games (yet) there is little motivation to jump in early. It isn't like the XBox Game Pass where games may be available for a limited time.
3DS version is king, no matter what a certain bloated 2-hour YouTube review will have you believe. Hope that gets ported to consoles some day (a port of a port would be peak Nintendo)
Everyone keeps bashing Nintendo Online but I must be the only person who vocally supports the price 🔥
@MichaelP not really what i was saying... I'm saying they want us to upgrade to the expansion pak since that's what they're supporting currently
@ThomasCasson i also have no problems with the price. It's cheaper than PS+ and has better games. I#m happy to have it and play old games on the go
If you already have Switch online then the expansion pak is £17 a year extra. Good value if you ask me, especially with the excellent emulation for the Megadrive games (which no one seems to have mentioned because they're all busy moaning about a few iffy graphics in Ocarina of Time). Looking forward to finally giving Majora's Mask a proper go, as well as Paper Mario and Sin & Punishment.
SELL. ME. THE. CONTROLLER. c’mon Ninty !
Out of curiosity (I'm not a subscriber atm), has Ocarina of Time's fog been fixed in recent weeks?
@Savino Seriously. I'm tired of opening up the snes games and seeing friggin Bombuzal and Jelly Boy still sitting at the top. It's just sad.
12 down, 26 to go!
@Indielink Thanks for the clarification!
But who would upgrade to the expansion pack, if he/she wants new SNES games?
Besides, thinking that Nintendo isn't releasing more NES/SNES games to make people pay for the upgrade is kinda dumb. And also makes absolutely no sense. I pretty sure the reason is, there aren't that much games left to release anymore.
@MichaelP not sure what's going on here. Maybe I struck a cord with my initial comment. I never said people should upgrade if they want more nes/snes games. I'm saying maybe nintendo isn't supporting those anymore and only doing n64 so people do the upgrade. Much in the same way a system manufacturer stops supporting the older system so people are more inclined to upgrade to the newer system. Anyways, take it easy pal, no need to get so worked up over vidya games
@timp29 it’ll get most people excited lol.
@MichaelP @NintendoByNature Nintendo is still supporting all their online. First they need to seal deals to use many games and that can become difficult sometimes today with companies changing hands and music rights and developer rights all depending on the game etc. They popped out a bunch real fast with the nes online just like their doing with the sega and n64 as they announced before it’s release even. I am sure they are working on other nes and snes titles but they are not going to tell us until it is close to complete. Who knows we may get a handful or only one or maybe ten. I am sure the same team is working on all of these transactions and emulations and it is probably a small team as well. In the end it is still better than ps now to me and millions of others. 26 million subscribers vs 3.5 million on ps now. Nes online has almost as many as Xbox game pass does which is actually a long awesome service and they have 28 million.
As the subscriber base and revenue fifties I would expect more games to come to the nes, snes, n64 and sega online. What most people do not realize is they have to pay for the rights and with some that’s a one time payment and others it’s a monthly, yearly payment. The online sub cost is what pays for those rights. As it grows more and more will come and even some top dollar games where the publishers are greedy possibly as well.
"yea, kind of stinks the base owners are being left in the dust. Then again, I kind of get it. They want people to upgrade."
Which, for me, means, Nintendo isnˋt releasing (any)more NES/SNES games to make people upgrade. Or did you mean something else?
@blindsquarel Saving changes could be a give or take, I'll give you that. But the Bombers Notebook opening and playing the whole animation every single time you talked to someone was infuriating, really no different than the rupee pickup complaints from Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. It's just an unnecessary break in the action. Also dear God the Bomber kids chasing after Link to give unneeded hints and then interrupting cutscenes in Clocktown. Like WHY does that need to be a thing.
Deku mask form lost the ability to fast hop between lillypads by spinning which completely breaks the flow of the forest. And also makes it incredibly difficult to leave the maze race under the Deku Palace.
The bosses may not have been super difficult in the original, but the remake makes them worse.
I'm not saying the remake is a bad game by any means, but the original is definitely the best way to play it still. For every thing that was improved in the remake something else that didn't need to be changed was negatively impacted.
Lol again..im not entirely sure whats going on here. Are you upset with my thought process or nintendos? I can only say this in so many ways for you to understand. I literally just said that. "I never said people should upgrade if they want more nes/snes games. I'm saying maybe nintendo isn't supporting those anymore and only doing n64 so people do the upgrade." This will be the last reply to you though, not sure what the argument is even about. I feel like nintendo isn't supporting nes/snes anymore so people upgrade to the expansion for new systems that they are supporting. That's my feeling, so read into that however you want this weekend. Have a good one.
@NeonPizza SS HD was a decent upgrade?
@stipey See @Indielink’s comment above. They put it better than I could have!
Can I get a port of the 3DS version or better yet a full on remake. Otherwise I'll just keep playing on 3DS.
@geiseldiesel Yes and No. I think the controls on Wii were better. Something seems off with the Switch motion controls. I'll know for sure once I get to a proper setup. My TV was at eye level with Wii and not with the Switch version so that might be a contributing factor causing the tilt sensor to register the wrong swings since I'm looking down instead of straight ahead.
@FullMetalWesker Maybe I'll just delete my account now.
You don't make much sense. 😕
Only reason for people to upgrade are the N64 games and/or Mega Drive games. Not releasing more games on the standard subscription wouldn't do anything to make people upgrade.
Auto correct. It just barely tried to change deku to deli.
@NotSoCryptic Yeah it could be. Worse comes to worse, you still have the option for button controls
@NintendoByNature yea, kind of stinks the base owners are being left in the dust. Then again, I kind of get it. They want people to upgrade.
Your understanding and concern for the bottom line of <insert corporation name here> is appreciated. Good consumers always put the profits of corporations before consumer needs like getting a good value for their money.
@nessisonett Indeed, I would like to see those two games packed in an definitive edition but also addressing a few issues that they have. Ocarina of Time 3D needs higher quality UI design, its current UI looks rather average compared to everything else, plus it's made for the 3DS resolution and form factor of course. Majora's Mask needs a better UI too, but it also needs some changes reverted to how it was in the original. A man can dream.
@Crono1973 don't think I'll ever recover dude. Long live the insert corporation name!!!
@NeonPizza Monkey Ball only has analog controls on Switch? Yikes didn't know that. Also is TTT any good? I liked the levels in 3D World but never really considered buying its own game
@imgrowinglegs No, the 3DS version of Majora's Mask sucks. There's a video by Nerrel that explains all the bad changes.
@NeonPizza They messed up Majora's Mask 3D. MM3D is far worse than the original. Meanwhile I disagree about Skyward Sword HD and think it's a straight upgrade from the Wii version.
My favorite Zelda game but I am fully bracing for the emulation to be worse than the Gamecube port at this rate.
@NeonPizza OoT3D is good, but MM3D makes a lot of changes that undermine what made the original great.
I absolutely LOVE this game! I fell in love with it when it was 1st released! And it has never dulled or diminished in any way, even factoring in older and newer titles! Like Ocarina of Time before it, this game is truly special! I would recommend this to title to people in 2022 if they have an opportunity to play it and have not before! (Heck, even if they had played it before
...but all of your comments about the 3D version just lets me know that i don't ever need to play it! (I wouldn't want anything to hurt my opinion of this title after all) Lol! I owned the Original release and now own the LOZ Collectors Edition, so I'll stick with these! I'll wait for a review before I tackle the subscription title.
