PlatinumGames President and CEO, Kenichi Sato, has stepped down from his position as head of the company after five years and eight months in the role and will be replaced by current studio head and vice-president, Atsushi Inaba, who has been with the Japanese developer since its inception back in 2007.
Sato-san will continue to play a role at the company, moving into a position as a board advisor, and Inaba-san released the following statement to go alongside the announcement of his new role;
Create, and deliver.
Creating innovative forms of play.
That is the belief PlatinumGames was founded on.
That is something that will never change.
Games come in all different styles for all different kinds of people. At their nature, they are a true expression of liberty: thoughts come together freely to create an idea, to expand upon it, and then, to actually play it. The real enjoyment from games comes from the freedom given to both the creator and user—which is why I believe them to be such an amazing form of entertainment.
Approaching “fun” with complete sincerity has always been important to me. I believe every one of our staff take pride that they are entertainers, always attempting the perfect balance between play and professionalism.
Creating a new, enjoyable game starts with the creator being able to enjoy the game themselves. The creator then has to continually build on their idea until they have something that communicates that sense of fun to anyone who experiences it—that consideration of the user makes all the difference.
Our overarching goal for entering self-publishing has been unchanged since its conception: to invent something new and share it with the rest of the world—showing our sincerity towards creation every step of the way.
People speaking different languages, from different backgrounds, all brought together through a controller. Made to smile by a new type of game.
It connects us, and sets us free.
It’s a job that I’m extremely proud of.
As I move forward towards the new challenges of the future, I hope to provide more and more experiences for all our users to enjoy.
CEO / Studio Head
Atsushi Inaba

The headline had me worried that he was gonna talk about NFTs
I really hope he's telling the truth because the games industry needs a new innovation. Stop wasting time and money on VR and put it into something better please.
Interesting...Inaba is a great choice at least, but hopefully this doesn't impact Project G.G.
I really hope Nintendo writes the biggest checks to them and/or eventually buys them. With all the acquisitions going on left and right I really do worry that EA, Activision or even Sony/Microsoft will get to them and all that was said in the above statement will be nothing but hopes & dreams down the toilet.
@Ganner
Foreign companies are not allowed to buy/purchase domestic Japanese companies.
It's in their laws.
The only one you'd have so worry about is Sony.
@Spider-Kev true… and not true.
People should be worried about Tencent then (ugh)

@Spider-Kev Pretty sure the law only prohibits foreign buyouts of Japanese companies if the Japanese government gave money to that company at some point.
@dew12333 Have you ever played games in VR.. It's awesome
Nintendo need to buy these guys asap and i would also put Sega on that list too, Nintendo need to get Bayonetta locked onto their consoles, Sonic and the Yakuza games would be good too.
But yeah i genuinely believe that Nintendo need to purchase both Platinum and Sega.
I don't think Nintendo needs to buy them, unless a competitor would instead. Platinum doesn't need to be exclusive to one platform.
But I also hope they never stop making Nintendo exclusives, for their own sake. I remember what happened to Rare, Factor 5, Silicon Knights when they stopped making Nintendo games. Bad times.
@NWC i found VR to be a bit of a fad, i was really digging it for about 3 months but after a while i got bored.
I couldn't sit there for more than an hour or two with those headsets on my head, my eyes would get tired fast and it was physically tiring having to just play games, have you ever played SuperHot VR? It's like a freaking workout, i wanna play games not work out, i got gym already lol.
But seriously its not bad but it isn't practical for long sessions of playing, you cant sit through a 200 hour game doing 5-6 hour play sessions with VR, it just isn't comfortable or at all viable.
It's a good fad but there is a good reason why it will never really replace proper traditional video games.
@Gamer_Zeus Well i played all of RE7 in VR and played it for hours and had no problem but shame i stopped Playing playstation now so i may go get the vive as is the best one anyways
@Gamer_Zeus Tencent own shares in Platinum Now ,so Ninty not going to get involved. There best at just working as they do with them. As far as Sega , dont think Nintendo could afford them if they wanted to sell. Many people forget how big SEGA are, They are SegaSammy who are one of the biggest entertainment companies in Japan. Plus many forget how big in the PC space SEGA are. The Total war Series / Football Manager / And now with them in the film business with the Sonic movies which is making them even bigger.Also against it is Sega's work ethic compared to Nintendo is at odds with them. Add in the Arcade divisions which still rake in cash for Sega and Pachinko for Sammy.
@Gamer_Zeus Yep VR is great I would inagine at first, I tried it , but prefer a big screen and sit back to play then where a contraption on my head.
@Gamer_Zeus super hot is freaking awesome in vr and the fact you get a work out is an added bonus, imo.
As long as "innovative" ≠ NFTs, I think we're good here
Was the replacement a performance issue? Platinum has had a really quiet run under the current CEO… only 3 games released since 2017, not including the W101 rerelease.
@NWC 3D was much better, & needed much less space & equipment, but it was abandoned. It will happen, eventually.
@fafonio owning a majority share in a publicly traded company is a little different than owning a company. The end result is similar. I'm not saying it's not possible in Japan, tho. i have no idea.
@NWC Yes I have, as few years ago I played the Kitchen demo on the PSVR at a show, and at christmas I played the Oculus one. I found them both interesting but overall just a gimmick, and with far more flaws than good things. In fact when I played a roller coaster game on the Oculus it made me feel sick. I also didn't feel that any amount of other things they could do with it would ever make it anymore interesting to me.
I think Nintendo looked at the tech in the right way by just making the labo thing.
@KITG_GROUP Tencent doesn’t own Platinum shares. They funded some projects in an undisclosed deal/trade. But I never trust Tencent anyways.
Platinum Games - Undisclosed investment: At the beginning of 2020, Tencent invested an undisclosed amount into Platinum Games, but the terms of the deal aren't specified. Kenichi Sato, Platinum's president and CEO, said Tencent "has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure."
@twztid13 I mean, I get what you’re saying. But it’s a 90% we are talking about…. You practically own the thing. If it was a 51% it would be a bit different.
@dew12333 That's too bad im a huge fan of VR but I see why Nintendo didn't get into it as they do their own thing
@twztid13 I agree 3D was very awesome and wish they had done more with it and with VR you can't really do 3D but it's a shame they can't do something with both
@fafonio Yes they funded projects , but as Im aware there connection is more deeper. I know People dont like Tencent for no apparent reason, but hey as long as it delivers the goods
