If you're getting fed up of waiting for DOOM Eternal to arrive on Switch, perhaps it's time to consider picking up this old classic and taking it for a new spin.
Yes, a physical version of DOOM 64 is coming soon to Switch. Limited Run Games has announced that it'll be opening pre-orders next week on 25th September, with the listing going live at 10am ET.
The standard edition, which includes a full-colour booklet and full-colour interior art, will launch for $24.99. Alternatively, you could go for the Classic Edition release pictured below. It's set to retail for $54.99 and will include a commemorative Nintendo 64 cart (that doesn't actually function as a cart), a double-sided poster, and a behind-the-scenes booklet containing interviews.
This is ever-so-slightly more expensive than the game's eShop $4.99 price, so this is definitely one for the hardcore collectors.
Will you be picking this up? If you're wondering, yes, DOOM 64 is still a blast to play on Switch after all these years.

Remember when this was meant to be a pre-order bonus for Eternal on all platforms
good times.
I feel bad for y'all who haven't played Eternal yet
its also cheapest when free. You know, when it comes with DOOM Eternal preorders?...........😴still waiting
Bought digital. Played and loved it.
Tempted about this physical release, but my videogame expenses are already going to be high this year, between PC and Switch.
As ever, this is one of for the enthusiasts and collectors.
I can't help but be excited though.
Crazy not to do this as a compilation with doom 1 and 2, that would have been very worth having.
@Lapses
I get the terrible feeling that if LRG handle a physical release for Doom 1, Doom 2, and Doom 3 BFG Edition, that they'll be three separate game cards even though it should justifiably be a single game card.
Are the original developers of the game going to see a dime from this? No? Okay then.
I will forever be disgusted by how game companies have no interest in archiving video game history unless they can make a buck off of it. This goes for other industries as well.
What a missed opportunity, I’d have ordered this if it was the original trilogy and 64 on cart.
Could have been a least a collection of classic doom titles.
Crazy price.
Why do these articles always neglect to mention that there’s a cheaper version that doesn’t include all the goodies?
Digital is significantly cheaper either way, but it’s not like you have to spend $55 to get the cart.
@RupeeClock I remember they did that with Turok and it was a shame then too. I've gone for a good few games from limited run and they've been great but I'm definitely more in the mind to cram as much into a cartridge as possible. I just want physical copies of stuff, not so fussed about the extras. If it's all about game preservation, why waste the empty cartridge space?
Wow, that is a smaller price gap then I expected.
@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah. My preorder is going on one year now too. However, I didn't play DOOM (2016) until it was announced for the Switch. Gave it a try on Game Pass and bought it on my Switch. I can wait on DOOM Eternal.
This looks a cool pack with the N64 commemorative cartridge and all, but seeing as the game is only £3.99 on Switch (and I got it for £1.99 on sale recently) it looks like a collectors item only.
On a side note - this is probably the best game I have ever purchased for under £2.
urrrggghhhhhhh ... Limited Run
I honestly can't stand LRG anymore.
No wonder everyone is saying Nintendo is DOOMed. I'll see myself out...
Got Doom 64 for free on Xbox One with my Doom Eternal pre-order and have it on Switch for £1.99 when it went on sale..
So 2 digital copies for a grand total of £1.99....
I don't think I'm the target market for this really, haha....
I do wish there was a UK based version of Limited Run games as by the time shipping is factored in they just really aren't worth it
To all whiners ... this is NOT for you. This is for collectors not for everyone. Be happy with your digital edition.
@Lapses
They were especially guilty of this with Blaster Master Act Zero 1 & 2. Could've easily been one on cartridge.
But instead, they made an Ultimate Collector's Edition which is a kit that includes Collector's Editions for the two games separately.
There's something about this that just feels a little late to me. This should have been thrown together around the time Doom 64 released on Switch. That way you could try to entice people to spend the cash while its still fresh on their minds. The $4.99 digital tag is just too good to pass (even cheaper if using gold coins) Also, doing a version including Doom 1, 2, and maybe Doom 3 all on the same cart would be a better package. Just how it is especially how late after the digital release doesn't seem like a good deal. However having said that I understand this is definitely for the hardcore collectors not the average Joe.
@RupeeClock - Likely Bethesda has some say on whether or not Doom games would be sold separately on carts.
You’d have to be a complete mug to buy this.
At the end of the day I think the main question is, are Limited Run games greedy or just making fan service?
Metal Cart, Booklet, Physical Game, Poster
From my estimate: Booklet ~$5, Poster $5, Physical Game ~$20
Metal Cart and retro box must then be worth $25
Idk, for a collector this doesn't seem horrible. It's no digital but they do seem to try to give you enough stuff to justify the price.
I still got my N64 copy so I may skip on this one but hopefully they get around to making physical print of Doom 1-3 as well especially Doom 3 since that one has never been available physically for Nintendo's console before and was the best port of the three.
Well, i think this kills my hopes for a compilation of doom games in physical form.
@RupeeClock oh dear, now that you mention it i think I remember that one. I appreciate what they are doing but sometimes it's just too exclusive. I'm sure they could offer some really good value packages if they chose to but instead they are aiming for the big spenders. That's fine, but it feels off when they then talk about being pillars of game preservation. Maybe I don't understand the business side, all the other companies do the same.
@Lapses
The reality is that a lot of the money is made from the collectible extras, not necessarily just the sale of a physical game by itself.
There's going to be profit in those kinds of collectibles which are probably much cheaper to produce than they appear.
Yes. I will buy again, Doom 64 is my favorite Doom.
The asking price for this set is absurd as it is asinine. Sure- looks nice on a shelf and such but as it stands, I’m not interested.
Glad I have the digital version...
@Zebetite "I will forever be disgusted by how game companies have no interest in archiving video game history unless they can make a buck off of it. This goes for other industries as well"
So then you are disgusted by all companies in all industries.
@Lapses completely agree. A physical collection with Doom 1, 2, 3 and 64 would have been a must have, even though all of these titles have been of sale for pretty cheap on the eShop.
@TheFrenchiestFry Already got it on PC, just waiting on the Switch version actually.
I don't collect physical Switch games. But if I did, I would prefer single releases instead of collections. That is the whole point about these special editions.
Don’t understand why they don’t do a 1-3 compilation, would of jumped at that
While a compilation would have been the best option, because Bethesda are frequently updating the first two games, it would defeat the purpose of producing a cartridge, at least for now.
I hate that DOOM 64 is getting an overpriced solo release... but I'm almost certain that I'm going to splurge on this too. I skipped the Sigil box which was WAY overpriced for a free mod in a box, but this is so damn tempting, even though I downloaded the digital release on day one.
@RupeeClock Which is sadly likely considering that Strictly Limited split the Turrican compilation in half for no valid reason other than money. They claim that they'll be bloating it with bonus features, but that's barely an excuse.
@TheFrenchiestFry I’m not sure I can wait any longer. There must be issues with it we should have heard something by now.
Good thing it was LRG. Not a normal, 34.99 tops release. These games weren't going to get physical treatment and were on brutal sale several times, so everybody has them in digital form already. Plus, the LRG game prices make this purchase way too expensive to hesitate.
Never liked LRG. There's catering to a niche market (which is what physical is becoming) and then there's taking advantage of the people in that niche market.
For $54.99? NO WAY AND NO THANK YOU
@TheFrenchiestFry well rather have panic button take their time polishing switch version up plus lets not forget covid 19 also probably hampered their development as well.
I wonder if collectors would come over and clean up my house under the condition that they get to collect all of my garbage. 😂
this is actually pretty cool
Why wouldn’t they stick Doom, Doom II and Final Doom in there with Doom 64?? Jeez What a gyp.
@robr But then who will live there?
awwww people loving bethesda trash when they cant even release eternal on the switch
@ogo79 no its not. where is eternal?
im not caring about eternal.
i only care about the classic games, so thats why i said what i said.
thats my jist on it.
If we can get it in the UK I will pick up the collectors edition!
@NintendoPok
You can't really blame Bethesda if it's Panic Button porting the game.
Definitely getting this!
@Zuljaras
😂
@NotoriousWhiz That was a pretty decent attempt at being clever. Let your brain mature for a few more years and maybe next time you'll actually succeed.
@Zebetite Maybe you can tell me about this mythical company that does things simply out the kindness of its heart will no monetary reward?
@NintendoPok But you can't blame Bethesda for something that's out of their control. They aren't the ones porting the game and they didn't predict some of the technical difficulties that Panic Button has run into.
Besides, Skyrim is a game that's popular enough for people to want to replay. There's really no issue with re-releasing a game like that.
@NintendoPok
The article is updated and there is normal physical edition of the game for $24.99. I will get that instead of the Classic.
@NintendoPok $24.99 is not $50 but okay LOL
@MulderYuffie the $5 digital but go ahead spend $25
@NintendoPok
Can't go a few seconds without throwing insults around, eh?
@NathanTheAsian not insults disagreeing
