Yesterday, Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch was reportedly leaked online. According to early details, all three games in the collection are emulated.
There's a bit of a buzz around the emulator for Super Mario 64, as it supposedly contains references to various other Nintendo 64 games. This, of course, has got a lot of people excited about the idea of N64 titles potentially coming to the Switch Online service. The mention of Perfect Dark, in particular, even caught the attention of former Rare composer Grant Kirkhope.
The other N64 titles mentioned include Kirby 64, Mario Golf, Mario Story (known locally as Paper Mario), Mario Tennis and Pokémon Snap.
Unfortunately, it might not mean anything. According to the data miners OatmealDome and LuigiBlood, this data is more likely to be "leftovers" from the Wii U's N64 Virtual Console emulator. Perfect Dark was also apparently listed back then but was never made available.
In other words, as exciting as it is to see games like Perfect Dark and Paper Mario referenced, it's best not to get your hopes up.

"Don't read too much into them"
Ha good one, this is the internet, get ready for pointless speculation and tantrums galore when nothing comes of it.
Not suprised, this collection seems to be a patchwork of Nintendo's previous emulation efforts.
If they weren't giving us some of the greatest games ever made I would say it's low effort...but it's 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. They know they can get away with it!
Perfect Dark on Switch would just about make 2020 kinda alright in the end.
From the start I honestly thought they may have been there to test out the emulator. That's it.
I think the same thing happened with the PS1 Classic. They had a ton of roms used for testing like Tomb Raider and Harry Potter, yet didn't show on the system.
Tis a shame as an N64 kid, I'd love them to come to NSO. But hey ho!
@ilh Depends on whether it was MS or Nintendo that got to set the price. I wouldn't pay £50 for a Switch version.
@ilh would love the remaster from Xbox 360. That one should run pretty well on Switch.
@Richnj I’ll easily pay 50 or 60 bucks for PD. It just such a good game
No references to Galaxy 2 then... sob
@Kimyonaakuma I wouldn't call Galaxy too low effort. They actually bothered to port much of the code natively so alleviate stress on the Switch and improve performance.
@Collette I would pay money for that! Such an underrated game. And that soundtrack, ahh...
@NIN10DOXD they already produced an Nvidia Shield version a few years ago, I would say optimisations were minor on top of that.
I really really liked N64 Mario Golf. Would welcome that. Yoshi's celebrations were epic.
Hmm, THQ wrestling games anywhere?
“best not to get your hopes up”
Could be Nintendo’s new slogan!
I have never loved and been frustrated in equal measure by anything else. Nintendo is an enigma.
@Collette I don't know. It was Konami so they'd probably be able to get the original programmers to rework the game for Switch but then they'd have to hire someone else to clean the toilets.
@Ajent They've reworked a few old slogans for 2020:
<strike>Good things come to those who</strike> wait
Now you're playing with <strike>power</strike>
@dewokkel been playing that recently somehow it moves too smooth for me. Like I need a bit of 64 junkyness to manually aim
Goldeneye? Please, please, please, please?
"Strings in the 3D All Stars N64 Emulator , Nintendo Switch Online?"
Yep. Nintendo 64 Online coming in 2021. Just a few months after they stop selling this 3D Collection. N64O will have Mario 64 ofcourse.
@Collette I see you are a man of culture as well
Mystical Ninja Goemon is such an underrated gem.
@Collette
@GoldenSunRM
Amazing game. Would probably be in my all-time top ten. I have it on my shelf... but I curse the fact that I didn't buy the sequel at the time as well... it costs a fortune now!
@Collette @GoldenSunRM @Ooyah I’ve recently just played and completed Mystical Ninja on the N64. I never played it back in the day so I don’t have any nostalgia for it, but can agree it’s a great game. Other than some expected dodgy camera control and glitches (which I’m ok with as playing a lot of N64 games at the moment) I thought it still played very well. I like the humour and the soundtrack is awesome!
Do we know when Nintendo’s review embargo is? I’m gonna get 3D All-Stars, of course I am, but ideally I’d love to see NL’s review before I actually hit that BUY button on the eShop!
Don’t overreact?!? I’m patiently waiting for a 40 minute Gamexplain video now lol
@The_Pixel_King The review is up now, but it feels a little bare.
It makes sense. Nintendo would give us the N64 with games not many care for.
I wouldn't look too much into it, but I'm very curious as to why Perfect Dark is referenced in the emulator. Even with the idea of adding an N64 service with Nintendo Online, that seems like it would be harder to get since Microsoft is selling it on their own platform.
@StuTwo
😂 On point.
If the Mario 64 touch ups didn't take too long, that would be a great gateway to releasing more N64 to Switch, whether it be through an app or just put them for sale on the eShop, that would be some easy money moreso than just ROM dumps.
If you want N64 emulation that badly install custom firmware + retroarch. Works great! 😉
@liveswired I'm saying due to them actually porting the source code for the game, that it at least took more effort.
We've been wanting N64 on NSO for so darn long.
I don't care if it's NSO or collections like 3DAS, but I want them!
@Roibeard64 haha that’s weird indeed. Muscle memorie I guess 😉
They just copied and pasted from there Wii eShop archives to make this collection.
Considering Rare went to Microsoft during the GameCube-Xbox era, I'm surprised Perfect Dark was even considered for the Wii Virtual Console. Maybe it was really early in the Wii's development.
@ilh especially the rare replay version, I love both but God does rare replay's version play better
Perfect Dark? Doubt it, Microsoft owns that now. I would rather see Goldeneye anyways.
I don't see them launching an N64 Mini, I think Nintendo moved on from that kind of product (sadly for me, because I'd like to have about 20 -don't think they're going to get many 3rd party licenses of a catalog being greatly known by its Rare games- nice little games in a beautiful little Nintendo 64). But I don't see why they wouldn't do an app for online subscribers.
I'd love to have Paper Mario there, the only way to play it legally without having to sell a kidney.
Anyway, I don't think they're going to announce it anytime soon, because obviously Super Mario 64 should be there and now they want people to buy 3D All-Stars. I see it in 2021. Fingers crossed.
Did someone just now learn what an enumeration means? It's like a table of contents for code.
It just means they copied some classes over, not that they have even tried those games.
Just give us more N64 games! Banjo, Goldeneye & Donkey Kong 64 remasters would be mega, however I know they're unlikely. . Maybe Mario party 1-3?
