It's cool that these games are here but... am I the only one who gets a bit frustrated that Capcom doesn't rerelease their "3D" era fighting games? like, where's Street Fighter 4 and 5 and MvC3?! it's always just the sprite based ones.
@nhSnork indeed. and there was also the legit concern that they might try to "Modern Audience" it. thankfully the Devs have been very forthcoming about not removing any of the outfits or censoring the game in and form. the only thing that is still up in the air is the Anime crossover costumes but I hope they somehow manage keep those in (though I belive people will understand if those don't come back since it'd be a licensing issue)
@NatiaAdamo yeah, I'm hoping that, with Shadow Generations, we'll start seeing humans pop up again. Humans are a major part of Shadow's story and there was recently a Sonic Channel art showing Elise with Silver. It's good to see Sonic Team becoming more confident about the franchise's history again.
@nhSnork I imagine the reason why they didn't announce the Switch version before was because this project was originally gonna be a Remake, but they scaled it down to be a remaster instead.
@GameOtaku same, the Crossover outfits were amazing (and the world of 2024 is not ready to learn of the existence of Manyuu Hikencho and I REALLY want it to xD)
@SalvorHardin I mean unlike filoni, the Sonic franchise DOES have a lot of holes that need to be fixed storywise. And Ian is really good at filling those holes without just disregarding what came before. Part of the reason frontiers story was so good was how well Tails was handled ans how his insecurities in Forces were addressed.
Can't way for a game to come out of nowhere, take the world by storm, earn countless accolades and praise from both critics and audiences.. then have its studio shut down but this time it'll have had a multiplat release
“we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary" And that's the objectively correct stance to take. The last thing nintendo needs to do is ruin their family friendly public image by trying to virtue signal by pandering to less than 5% of the world population. Disney has gone that route and look how it's working out for them.
Mind you, people are free to live and believe in whatever they like, but this idiotic and obsessive need for "representation" in every piece of media does nothing to make people more accepting, in fact, it does precisely the opposite.
Gay characters have existed since the 90s and they were always accepted, as recently, I'd say Sylvando in DQ11 is one of the best. But that's because he exists as any other character and gets no special treatment. Trying to put these characters on a pedestal will only make people more annoyed as they exist almost exclusively to send a message.
Engage's problem was discarding the story and character side of things for the sake of the gameplay. Ideally, the next fire emblem would marry the two aspects. Have combat and customization of units as free as Engage's but have a story and world building on par with three houses.
@HeadPirate I don't disagree that moderation is a thing, the issue is that such localizers act like they speak for the general audience when they really don't. bringing it back to the examples: Xenoblade X is not the first game to feature a boob slider in a character creation, nor will be the last. even in the west, several games, there's several games rated T that include that feature. and First Party Nintendo games don't "Look" for a publisher, their localization is made in-house by a branch of their own company. and it's usually just a handful of people (who, again, had no involvement with the creation of the game, so the creative vision is not their to tamper with. You're correct to say that "Nintendo of America has the right to not want boob sliders in their games", but a game made by the japanese Studio is NOT their game. And they have the exclusive right to provide the ONLY official means for people in the west to play those games, so my stance is that it's not their place to alter/remove content made by another studio, As I mentioned in the comment above, to me, Localization is making sure the story the intend of original creator gets conveyed in the most understandable way possible in a new language, some adaptations need to be made here like in songs, jokes, and some other circumstances, but ultimately it shouldn't involve altering parts of the original work because the localizer either has a problem with it, or thing some people will have a problem with it).
I understand and agree that there are guidelines to be followed. that's why the ESRB exists. but I can say that no one is obligated to make arbitrary changes to content that is already inside said guidelines, that's basically what it often comes down to.
lastly, again, government censorship is not the only form of censorship that exists. Playstation mandates censorship of several M rated japanese games that get released with it's content unchanged on Switch. and the age rating is exactly the same in both versions. and it's been well established and documented that this policy was implemented around 2015 when Playstation's HQ moved from Japan to California. and it has no guidelines (meaning they judge on a case by case basis without clear dos and don'ts), disregards whether or not the game has already been approved by the ESRB and is applied unevenly (as Last of Us 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 get to have full on sex scenes and full frontal nudity, but many visual novels from Japan need to have their ecchi scenes, which never feature full nudity by the way, to get the breasts covered by flashes of light.)
and it's no straw man to say that there's people trying to alter content in games due to ideology, while the Sweet Baby Inc. debacle was at it's highest, a video of Kim Belair (CEO of SBI) surfaced where she very openly talks about how they "have a coffee with the PR team and terrify them with the idea of what's gonna happen if they don't give you what you want", we also had Crunchyroll (or was it funimationo?) Localizers talking about how they despise certain material in some Manga and Anime they localize and actively seek to change lines.
But I digress, if nothing else, I appreciate having a respectful conversation!
@Spider-Kev I'd say it's a bit more than that, being from Brazil I've consumed a lot of American media that had to localized in Portuguese, and sometimes changes NEED to be made in the script (mainly when it comes to accents, jokes, or music lyrics, as well as, in case of voiced dialogue, making sure you match lip flaps), so there's SMALL amount of liberty that can be taken.
That being said, that's no excuse to remove content or completely alter a character's personality or lines. Localization to me is "making sure the story thr original creator wanted to tell gets conveyed in the most understandable way possible without altering its context).
@HeadPirate here's where your logic fails mate. A boob slider, and petting wouldn't make Xenoblade X or Fire Emblem M rated games. NOTHING that is removed from these games ever is the type of content that would ever raise the age rating and we know that by looking at similiar titles like the original Senran Kagura on the 3DS that was MUCH more raunchy than either of them and still had a T rating. (if it was the case like with Sakurai needing to close up Palutena's dress because of CERO age ratings, that'd be a different story). not to mention that this type of censorship DOES happen even with M rated games (like removing the lingerie outfits from Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water). More often than not, these changes affect stuff that wouldn't change the age rating. it's just some guy in the Localization department saying "I don't find this appropriate/I don't like this".
And most of times, the original devs are probably not brought into the conversation when their content is tampered with in localization, and in cases of a Nintendo first party game, I HIGHLY doubt they are given that option.
Censorship doesn't have to be mandated by the government.
I'd only add that I would consider those "localization" changes you mentioned censorship. as that's an external party, unconnected to the creative team developing the game, arbitrarily choosing to remove elements from the game. This practice was REALLY bad in the Wii U/3DS days (with Xenoblade X and Fire Emblem Fates being some of the most notorious examples), and thankfully has kinda been walk back (though, still far from ideal, as they still arbitrarily change dialogue. like not letting the Goombas hit on Goombella in Paper Mario, or changing the dialogue completely every time Rosemary mentions stuff like putting on weight in Fire Emblem Engage).
@Spider-Kev In Localization did. and not third party games. they don't have the power to dictate that, but Sadly most of the ***** responsible for that stuff are still around at Treehouse (that's why Fire Emblem Engage can't have a woman talk about her weight, and Paper Mario CAN have Trans Vivian but can't have cat-calling. of Bowser calling a minion fat.)
@Spider-Kev in the 90s. they don't do that anymore and haven't done for a VERY long time. (now it's Playstation that censors third party. and microsoft too).
@nhSnork @HeadPirate actually someone on another side raised another possibility: maybe they realized it wouldn't be good to releease the trilogy on the same week as Game Maker R Evolution, so they could've done this to avoid the two games canibalizing each other's sales.
@nhSnork not to mention, the Switch has games like Omega Labyrith and Seven Pirates, both which include massaging boobs to make them bigger or smaller to get stats.
AND games like Waifu Discovered that have full on uncensored nipples. ANIME nipples, the type that Sony hates.
@AllieKitsune yes it does. it's a weird double standard to think one form of censorship is okay but another isn't.
I don't mind the Vivian thing, in fact, I appreciate that it's now closer to what the original Japanese version. what I don't like is the idea that of being faithful there, but then removing other lines of dialogue intended to be comedic because you find those offensive or something.
I kinda want to know how much of thr fialogue got censored. I was already annoyed when I saw they took out thr goombas hitting on goombella and Bowser calling on of his minions fat.
@HeadPirate i don't think that's the case (at least . Nintendo had been the only one of the big 3 to not censor third parties. Wi5h Furukawa even going on record condemning censorship. (And the switch getting uncensored versions of many games that get censored on playstation).
I'm guessing this might be some type of issue ok the publisher side.
@Trikeboy how hard is it to grasp that Censorship AS A CONCEPT is a bad thing?
we've already seen where this road leads with Sony. when they moved the Playstation HQ from Japan to California, they started enforcing heavy censorship of sexual content in games, but ONLY affected Japanese games, it started with graphical changes here and there, but eventually resulted in killing the Senran Kagura franchise because, as the creator of the series said himself "It would've been impossible to release the original vision of the game with the current regulations"). MIND YOU, many of the games that had been censored didn't even feature frontal nudity (as that's not even allowed in japan due to the law) and many had already been rated and approved by the ESBR and equivalent Age-Rating boards and released in their original state in other platforms including the Switch.
Another example is what happened with Skull Girls, a game that used its sex-appeal as part of it's identity (down to the point they had Zone, an actual pr0n Animator invited to work on the game), suddenly releasing an update that removed much of its original art making it completely inaccessible (Including in a digital artbook). and you can't even get a refund if you disagree with these alterations to a product you bought and had no say in.
It'd be one thing if they made these changes an optional toggle. that way, you actually treat your costumers like adults and let them chose for themselves what they deem appropriate, but It's really disheartening to see people with this sheepish "eh, the thing being censored isn't something I like so who cares?" mentality.
and just like that, these scumbags have guaranteed I will not only not buy this game, but NOTHING from that company. Censoring a game through a patch is unacceptable.
Well, when you're writing team despises the source material and your star who wanted to make a faithful adaptation leaves because of it, it's no surprise it's gonna end just like that.
I'll have to wait and see. I'm glad he likes the Vita (cuz Sony absolutely shat on suck a great console), I'm just always gonna be skeptical about someone coming to Nintendo from Sony. I already have my issues with the Localizers on NoA, and seeing what Sony has become in the current generation, the last thing I want is to Nintendo to become like them.
Honestly, if they play their cards right and stay humble (as in, not sh*ting on fans and actually giving people what they wanna see), there's definetly potential!

@Anti-Matter mate, considering Jegf has already revealed that the movie is based on SA2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. And that the actress for Maria made that joke of taking a photo with the backwards hoodie looking like a body bag. This might not be for you (though it's exactly what most fans want and I can't wait to see it).
I'm in a bind here, the game DOES look interesting, but I was seeing some examples of the changes made in localization and... well, let's just say I'm not impressed.
I might give this a go. first person game aren't usually my cup o' tea, but I heard good things. (also I remember this non-drama where some website was complaining that there were no black people in this game, even though it's supposed to take place in 15th-century Bohemia and made by as the very first project from a Czech Studio that wanted to depict an historically accurate representation of their own culture).
The new content look interesting, and the Narrative in the original was kinda weak, so I'm hoping there's enough new content to justify getting this version.
@WaffleRaptor01 that's my issue with that is, it's a bonus costume, Lego Sonic and the Prototype Bunny design aren't really "lore accurate" either, but nobody bats an eye.
@abbyhitter it means there's a lot of public interest and good will towards the series. I'd day it shows how well received the Sonic Movie franchise has been. Which is something worth celebrating specially when you consider the history of video game adaptations and how little faith everyone had in this because of the of the original movie design.

@abbyhitter it means there's a lot of public interest and good will towards the series. I'd day it shows how well received the Sonic Movie franchise has been. Which is something worth celebrating specially when you consider the history of video game adaptations and how little faith everyone had in this because of the of the original movie design.
