Re: Review: Xeodrifter (Switch eShop)

@frogopus The plus side, though, is that the devs who plan to release new games on the Switch who have already released a port or 2 will have gotten their feet wet allowing them to develop their new game faster than if they'd gone into Switch development blind.

Re: Review: Bayonetta 2 (Switch)

Ahem, @therealgamer - AAA is dead or dying. It's all coming coming to a head with all of this microtransaction riddled "live services" nonsense. They don't even call them games anymore for crying out loud. Keep that crap away from Nintendo machines. I fear for how Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to turn out. May just forget about it if Rockstar decides to make a lootbox fest. That's the last new AAA title worth thinking about at this point. We already have Bethesda and Atlas on board. Ubisoft is there, too, but they've been conning people into the live services model as well. I'll gladly take A+ indie games and 1st & 2nd party Nintendo over Live services any day.

Re: A Hat In Time Developer Confirms The Time Travel Platformer Won't Leap Onto Switch

onex

The whole situation is a real shame. I'd been following this game ever since its Kickstarter, and was eagerly awaiting a potential Wii U version during a time when the only thing we had to look forward to was this, Road Redemption, and 90s Arcade Racer. I'm almost certain A Hat In Time & Road Redemption only met their funding due to hopeful Wii U owners. So, it's not surprising these same backers probably now own a Switch and expect these games to make it to the platform without a hitch.

Welp, I was interested in playing this game, but only back then when the Wii U lineup was slim pickings. There are so many options for better game time now on the Switch, this game will fade into obsurity on Steam ( Yeah, it's on Ps4, but honestly how good will this game really do on that platform while everyone is invested in Warframe, Fortnite or Monster Hunter World?) along with the others mentioned in time. Road Redemption turned out poorly as well, and 90s Arcade went MIA. If I really want to play a good platformer on PC, I'll just boot up Psychonauts again. Farewell, A Hat In Time.

Re: Video: A Speedrunner Has Completed Super Mario World In Under A Minute

onex

@mdmtripp Perhaps the disagreement here comes from the article headline. If this is a speedrun, I don't care to ever see another one, because these people aren't playing the game at this point, and the lack of clarity spread over the internet certainly doesn't help the matter.
I consider a good speed run one done by someone who actually PLAYS through the game, gets to the end boss, defeats said boss. This "speedrun" cuts midlevel to credits. Is that included in the tools the game creators intended? Absolutely not.

Re: Video: A Speedrunner Has Completed Super Mario World In Under A Minute

onex

@Gridatttack I had a feeling there was, but it seems like CLEAN runs are the black sheep of the speedrun community, which is competely backwards imo.
Speaking of backwards, watching someone "speedrun" through the Ocarina Of Time is one of the worst things I've ever seen. Watching Link run backwards for 45 minutes, yeah that's a jolly good time! /s

Re: Rumour: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Might Be Spinning Its Way Onto Switch

onex

Crash is trash.
The hit detection is shoddy, the jumping mechanics are flawed, and the level design is mediocre bordering on plain bad.
Now, I'm only speaking of the first game as I haven't played the other 2, but man was it rough. And based on the videos I've seen on youtube, none of these complaints were addressed. Just a copy/paste of code with a new coat of paint.
Pass Bandicoot.

Re: These New Layers Of Fear Screenshots Might Keep You Awake At Night

onex

As a fellow painter myself, this game really resonates with me, and sure, if you don't understand what's going on, you would probably pass this off as a haunted house simulator. That's not the case, however. Every prop and every set piece was used for the sake of the story going on. It all comes together at the end, and if you've interpreted everything the way the game intended, the underlying tale is one of sadness. And alcoholism. Such a great game for what it is.

Re: Team17 Is Bringing Raging Justice To Switch This Year

onex

@noobish_hat I haven't played Grow Home, but from what I've seen, it's the art direction - not the low poly look - that makes it stand out, as with any game really. But the majority of Ps1 games which used polygon models looks like absolute butt on today's TVs.

Re: Kimishima Talks Nintendo’s 3DS Strategy Going Forward

onex

His wording to me simply states they will continue to drive sales of already released games, most likely via sales - such as those recently announced selects - not that new games are coming. The 3ds library is HUGE...it really doesn't need anything new. I suggest anyone who wants more out of it go explore its past games you haven't touched and give them some love.
I for one am still playing through Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon and FE Fates Birthright, both of which I've had since launch, and both of which are fantastic.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Riding High On Switch's Wave, But What Does It Need To Do To Stay There?

onex

@MailOrderNinja The gf is adamantly anticipating the Hyrule Warriors port so we can waste our lives away yet again slaying swaths of Bokoblin. 😂
I'm definitely getting the next Red Dead entry for PS4, but until then.. unless Nintendo drops a nice surprise on us this month, I'll have to choose between Kirby and Shadow. Yeah, I know SotC is a masterpiece; I've played through that and The Last Guardian. I'll just ultimately have to decide on single versus more party material.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Riding High On Switch's Wave, But What Does It Need To Do To Stay There?

onex

@MailOrderNinja Yes, I loved SotC on Ps2, but it's a fairly linear experience with little replayability. With the new Kirby game, we have yet another fantastic couch co-op game. Sure, friends' jaws will drop at the visuals of SotC remake, but once they're over that they'll be bored watching, whereas they'd be involved playing Star Allies. I dunno, I do adore SotC, but there are no surprises other than "ooh pretty". I guess it depends what they plan on charging for it.

Re: The Planet-Hopping Xeodrifter Will Touch Down On Nintendo Switch This February

onex

@SuperCharlie78 Sony has been competing for gamer's time and attention since they came out with the PS1. Of course they are going to offer cross buy if it'll entice you to pick up a PSP/Vita. Plus, their hardware's firmware were practically identical, so porting took no time at all on the dev's side of things. This simply isn't the case for Nintendo hardware. Wii was vastly different from the 2ds and 3ds, the 3ds vastly different from the Wii U, and while Breath of the Wild and other games can be played on both Wii U and Switch, the ports are only possible because of Nintendo dev wizardry. This wizardry however still takes a lot of their time, as anything would for third party/indies going from 3ds/WiiU to switch, so I can completely understand why they would want to charge for all of that time.
Sure, it may seem unfair when the prices are lower on other systems or the games have been out longer, but you have a choice - either skip the game and don't buy, or reward the devs for their time spent, and in return you receive both a home console version plus a portable one, for the price of the game when it was originally released. Sometimes lower.

Re: Labo's Cardboard Revolution Adds Almost $1.4 billion To Nintendo's Value

onex

The naysayers are seeing cardboard and automatically think "flimsy" because it's cheap. But this isn't the same as a pizza box. The large flap of a pizza box is flimsy, but most of these toys use boards about the width of a pizza box's SIDE or smaller, which is much sturdier. I think the durability will be just fine, as long as you don't get it wet. (or feed it after midnight)

Re: Nintendo Confirms It Won't Be Freely Supplying Extra Cardboard Replacements For Labo

onex

@thesilverbrick I'm confused by your inability to look past the capacity of the game card as if file size dictates the charged price. This is Nintendo we're talking about. The masters of compression. That aside, think about the tech going into that file size. You're basically saying it's OK if some so-called AAA game maker charges $60 for essentially the same game for the 23rd time, but if Nintendo's R&D dept. designs something truly groundbreaking in its execution - yet doesn't create a large file size - you don't approve of the price.

Stop looking at the material used here, and take a few moments to consider the inner workings. These aren't tech demos; they're fully realized mixed-reality toys with complex working parts constructed with easily replaced material.
The average LEGO set runs for $99.99 and above, and that's usually for one instructed toy, WITHOUT a neat motion-contolled game.
