It's 10th March today and that means it's officially Mario day. While there's a sale and more to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary, unfortunately, Nintendo's Japanese customer support Twitter account has dampened the mood with yet another reminder the company will end the Super Mario Bros. 35 service on 31st March 2021.
Here's a rough translation of the below tweet, courtesy of Google translate:
"The special title "SUPER MARIO BROS. 35" for the 35th anniversary of "Super Mario Bros." will end its service on March 31, 2021. Please note that you will not be able to play after April 1st."
This follows on from a similar reminder from Nintendo of Europe last week - which explains even if the game is still on your system, you will no longer be able to play it after this particular day:
"The Super Mario Bros. 35 service will end on March 31st, 2021, and will no longer be playable, even if you still have the game downloaded on your Nintendo Switch console."
To add to this, just yesterday, it was discovered the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon series would be pulled from Netflix on the same date. Obviously, Super Mario Bros. 35 is just one of many "limited-time" Mario games that Nintendo is doing away with soon - other titles include Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the new Super Mario Game & Watch system, featuring the original game.
How are you feeling about Nintendo killing off Super Mario Bros. 35 on 31st March? Have you enjoyed your time with this online battle royale? Leave a comment down below.

I feel like absolutely nothing positive comes out of this March 31st doomsday, I’ll just leave it at that.
Happy Mari10 day Sob sob sob
I loved this game and what a great twist to an aged platformer. Battle Royals seems to be the rage these days and the memories we have made while Super Mario Bros 35 won’t be lost. What a shame it’s over.
Here’s to Nintendo bringing this back in some sort of other capacity!
Lol I am still laughing at the article headline 😂 Happy MAR10 Day! 🎉
@Handy_Man It's a video game. It's not a doomsday, and nothing bad will come out of it being taken offline either.
This feels like being told on your birthday that you’re one year closer to death.
Can Nintendo be anymore tone-deaf? It's like rubbing salt in an open wound, for crying out loud.
@TheLightSpirit At this point I'm actually looking forward to April because this 31st March thing has been milked for all it's worth.
"But Nintendo is ruining my life!!!!!!!!!!!!11"
By now we've all read enough of the over the top reactions and it's time to move on.
I would take this more seriously if I thought for certain that Nintendo would actually fail to learn from the popularity of this concept. I am sure it will return in some form, perhaps as a paid release, after some time.
Like they need to remind us about their stupid decision.
At the very least I scored a couple wins, so I feel pretty happy with what I played.
Keep reminding us of your lame practice Nintendo and we'll remind you that all your Switch games could also be easily emulated for play on PC for free as well so yeah. Unless you want us to take you seriously stop with the March 31, 2021 bs reminder.
How are people still on about this? It's news that's literally 6 months old...
Yeah. "Happy" Mar10 day...
Happy Mario Day. And for God's sake, can folk stop acting like spoilt brats about Mar 31. Jeez. It was a kooky thing they did. Wonderful, even. But complaining wanting it forever just tells folk you had zero appreciation for it.
If it means the door is then open for some actual Zelda Anniversary marketing in the next financial year then don’t let that door hit your ass on the way out Mario.
Sometimes I wonder who tf thinks of these stupid idea to release these timed games. Just like Mario 3D all stars.
@GrailUK
"can folk stop acting like spoilt brats about... "
Good, really Good luck with that...
Really hope they reconsider or decide to bring it back at some point.
Although it's not great I don't really have a problem with 3D allstars being discontinued, anyone who really wanted to buy it has had plenty of time to do so and to be fair to Nintendo there doesn't seem to have been any shortages of supply that I've noticed.
But Mario 35 was a unique twist on an old format, I was sceptical at first but its surprisingly addictive and I'll be really sad to see it go
@SakuraHaruka Even this website put the happy birthday as a sub line in favour of wanting stuff! It's gross!
@GrailUK
I’m sorry this site doesn’t always act like Nintendo PR unlike yourself.
@SalvorHardin Apology accepted.
Sure, go ahead and give people less reason to keep NSO.
@Marios-love-child Mario 35 was made for the 35th anniversary of Mario. That anniversary ends march 31st. So it's only normal that the game, that requires active severs, ends as well.
Also Mario 3D Collection is a collection 3 games Nintendo could sell for €60 each, but now they are bundled for €60 that decreases the value of these games. So they made it a limited release as well. I am 90% sure we will see "deluxe" versions of these games in the future on Switch. Or at least for Galaxy and Galaxy 2.
And you might not going to like this. But if Nintendo would release a collection of 3D Zelda's (Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD) it is going to be limited as well.
"You know, I have never seen anybody work so hard not to get $5 million."
(Mike Ehrmantraut, from the Breaking Bad episode Buyout)
@SeantheDon29 I think it's the fans being actually deaf lol.
'Heres a game for Mario's anniversary'
'WHAT!? You are removing it afterwards?'
Nintendo online goes from worthless to less than worthless.
.........but Monster Hunter Rise is out a few days before so it’s all good!
Good thing Mario36 drops on April 1st
It’s like loose women on this chat at times
I'm not gonna complain, its not like I even play the game. And I love Mario.
@Buckyooliver What does that even mean?
A pointless exercise really. It only hurts Nintendo to remove this as I bet it's really popular still.
Been discovering Super Mario Maker on Wii U lately since up until now I haven't had any time to in my life. It's a shame servers are going down, but I feel more sorry for people who will be even later to the game and never see the best part about it. I get that Nintendo would have to close the servers at some point.
@King-K-Rool @GrailUK
Thank you, this whinging is looking pathetic now, especially some of the sarcasm and entitlement in these articles.
Mario 35 didn't even cost anything. So AnTi CoNsUmEr for Nintendo to give us a wonderful FREE game to play together for Mario's birthday year!
For me the whole march 31 yoke breaks down like this
Game & watch- well always going be limited like
All Stars- I have it so the digital things odd but don't care
Mario cartoon- zero cares given like come on its awful
Mario maker wii u- haven't touched it in over 4 years now myself
Mario 35- now this I will miss hopefully it comes back sometime. Wondering if planning like zelda or metroid 35s
I haven't played Mario 35 since last year. It was fun, but it's hardly a great loss. Hopefully we'll get a new NSO game soon.
March 31st:
Nintendo: “last chance to buy all these lovely Mario products!”
April 1st:
Nintendo: “April fools! We lied all along! They’re all still on sale!”
April 2nd:
Nintendo: “following user feedback, we humbly apologise for any distress caused by our 6-month long April Fools joke. Please continue to enjoy Nintendo products”
Just had a thought that maybe they planned All Stars originally to be physical release only and only provided it digitally due to covid lockdowns etc.
@Roibeard64 Whilst at the same time releasing new games?
Creating a limited retail window I can kind of understand, cancelling a really fun game that was provided as not only an important marker of the companies heritage but as a part of their online service i cannot. This is a really stupid decision.......unless they're dare to be really cheap and turn it into a retail game.
@YANDMAN thinking more the logistics.
The original plan might have been physical release only. They might have been unable to transport, manufactor or were afraid people wouldn't be able to buy it from stores.
All other games get digital day ones so wouldn't be as much a concern.
I've zero proof just a thought based on all previous special releases by Nintendo tend to be physical only and maybe they are reluctant to change that but felt had to in circumstances.
Might even be warehouses full of All stars carts they are trying to sell out of quickly.
Who knows but Nintendo themselves
I played Mario 35 when it was released. It was fun for a bit, but I stopped playing it a while ago. I have a copy of 3D All Stars and the Mario Game and Watch. I'll still have them after March 31st.
Happy MAR10 Day!
Also, I forget the name of it, but there was that multiplayer Zelda game on the DSi/3DS that was only available for a limited time too, wasn't there? For Zelda's 20th or 25th Anniversary...
Happy Mar10 day
@Shinnos No, Nintendo lawyers will come to your house and take them back!
@Shinnos Yeah, that was Four Sword's Anniversary Edition for DSi. It was only available for about 5 months from Sept 2011, and then made available once again for about 3 days in early 2014. I need to finish that actually, but I found it kind of boring in single-player from what I remember.
Regarding Super Mario 35, I have no strong opinions either way. It is not really free; you still have to pay for the NSO subscription to play it in the first place, but I don't personally think it is that great anyway. It is just Mario 1 where you play the same 3 levels again and again (based on my experience of playing). Tetris 99 just felt more enjoyable.
Ok, so how many articles are we going to get in regards to this, there has been at least 10 these past few weeks.
Not much news happening, so just moaning about the same thing over and over again?
I opened all the levels, earned all the icons and unlocked Luigi... I had a lot of fun with this game!
@JimmySpades Came here for the crying, wasn't disappointed. Nintendolife's got another 21 days of material they can milk out of this by poking the easily triggered for clicks. Not forgetting the aftermath.
I never played it because it was going to be removed. It’s a terrible decision and one in a long line of bad decisions. If I was in charge of Nintendo - it would make more money, have a better reputation and fans would be happier. I don’t understand their logic often. Still love so much of what they do - but why do they make so many silly decisions
@SeantheDon29 Tone-deaf is Nintendo’s middle name.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi They may have more time to consider changing their mind if they wasn't spending too much time on stopping criminals from hacking their consoles.
@adh56 I was thinking it’s be FANTASTIC if Super Mario 99 dropped on 4-1! Let us hope?
@nessisonett no it's not
I just hope it’s the longest April fools setup ever!
@Ghost_of_Hasashi are you talking
@Wavey84
Possibly or probably re-release them again for the 40th anniversary
@sanderev
Zelda isn't my thing so I wouldn't lose any sleep over that in fairness.
I know what you sayin about Mario 35 though. We be nice if there was at least an option to purchase it and keep it but nope, 31st March the plug is pulled and it we be no more
@Stocksy No offense, but I don't really understand your logic either. You didn't play it because it was going to be removed??
I understand people's feelings, it is anti-consumer and it is unnecessary for Nintendo to remove these games. Mario 35th makes more sense to remove as it's a free game for the celebration, however Nintendo will want to continue to earn money on the games in the 3D all stars collections and I believe they will be put on the eshop individually.
@Shinnos correct. No point me playing it Loving it and having it taken away with no way to play it again. I have a longer attention span of many you guys. A game that is six months old isn’t disposable to me. I know I’m old fashioned. It’s all good. I’m surprised so many of you support this move and like having a game designed and made and taken away after a short period. Even you ardent fanboys out there. Why people defend this move I just can’t fathom. But there we go.
Unfortunately this is just one of many reminders that Nintendo is a business and isn't in it for the fans sadly.
They will do what they think is going to earn them the most money or cost the least.
So anti-consumer. Nintendo created this game to troll and tease its customers.
This sucks I love having few quick rounds when I get back home from work
@eaglebob345 Stupid decisions are still stupid even after six months.
Happy Mar10 day! YOU HAVE 21 DAYS TO LIVE
It was fun playing while it lasted.
I feel like this game is a testbed for another service that may be coming out in the future. It feel... NES Remix-ish.
@Burning_Spear Yep, what about those poor folk who were out of a job oh wait a sec it was free...
@WiltonRoots People who are out of a job need something free to play, and Nintendo is taking this away. Nintendo is anti-unemployed.
@eaglebob345,
The site will keep bringing it up, because it's bound to create clicks, it's hardly news, as we all knew the deal as soon as all this Mario 35th stuff was announced.
@SwitchplayerJohn,
So you would also conclude sales are anti-consumer, as they offer an item for a cheaper price, for a certain time, then push the price back up to the original price.
@WiltonRoots,
Yes a free game that is now being taken away as it was a limited time offer, sounds fair to me.
Of course they did that.
@Burning_Spear @WiltonRoots - What about people who aren’t even born yet? Nintendo is anti embryo. What about the CEO of a company who keeps putting off ordering the game only to lose his job in a massive scandal & now all he has left in life is a Switch with no games? What about THAT guy???
@johnvboy Agreed. NintendoLife doesn't need to keep refreshing this issue. Best of intentions, I'm sure, but it's only fanning the flames. It reminds me of the old Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. Each week there would be a story reminding us that General Francisco Franco was still dead.
@Burning_Spear,
All down to revenue on a slow news day.
I'm feeling more abused by sites like this constantly driving this point that they act like Nintendo hates us all and is doing this out of spite.
The anniversary is over, friggin get over it, there will be more.
Thank God i have standards, and would never give greedy ninty $60 for 3 free old roms, nor do I care about a repetitive f2p mario otherwise I'd probably let these anti consumer practices get to me too on the 31st
@Burning_Spear With all due respect, we're simply reporting on the fact that Nintendo is telling people (once again) that the game will be removed. If Nintendo feels it's important enough to tweet about, then it's surely important enough to cover on a site that follows Nintendo?
I hate this! I love picking up my Switch for a short break to play something quick....Mario 35th has been one of those quick play games. I will miss it dearly. I'm really hoping they replace it with something similar or turns out to be an elaborate joke the next day on April 1st.
@Damo Don't sweat it.....they could just not read the article if it upsets them so much.
@dkxcalibur Now where would be the fun in that
Absolutely not surprised seeing Nintendo fanboys literally defend turning off a game a lot of people are still playing. They have defended dumber decisions in the past. It’s just what they do. They are free Nintendo PR. Pathetic
@Damo
Thanks for telling us these things-(see below) you all offer a nice site!
Likewise I’m grateful that Nintendo announced the Maker 1 shutdown, which I read about here, so I had a chance with the series on the cheap (I don’t have a switch).
It is also nice to read all of the comments from you fine people; thanks!
@MrDanger88 Defending or attacking makes absolutely no sense here. In the end it's up to Nintendo what to do with their online services and games.
It was fun while it lasted. Personally, I would have liked Mario 35 to expand to include stages from Mario 3 and World.
So sad, it's such a fun idea, I kind of hope they just release it in a larger package with other Mario games perhaps, or in some form rather than it just vanishing entirely... happy MAR10...
@Dr_G_Lemaitre You're very welcome!
with how blunt theyre being about killing off games on mar31, hopefully that also means they'll take the hint nobody wants to see this practice with any future stuff either
what is the main reasoning they are shutting the servers off?
@gameboy-x to make sure the ardent fanboys will defend anything they do.... scroll up.... test complete. Fanboys still on the hook.
I love Nintendo but why anyone would defend this is truly gobsmacking.
It would eventually end someday when the Switch becomes outdated and replace with the next new console later on like every other online based game before it.
But I'm very sure it'll come back with or without Nintendo by that time.
