The Famicom Detective Club series is a cherished franchise in Japan. These murder-mystery visual novels began life on the Famicom all the way back in 1988 and garnered success with critics and adventure fans alike. Two entries were released on the Famicom in the form of Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind, but sadly neither of these ever made their way west in any official capacity. Thankfully though this all about to change as both of those original titles are being remade from the ground up for Switch (by the Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes team, Mages) and we've been fortunate enough to go hands on.
Both Jon and Zion from our video team split the task of playing through each of these remakes on Switch and had a good ol' chat all about their time so far. So if you're curious to see the game in action and learn more, give the video above a look! It feels like it's been ages since Nintendo has put their effort into the visual novel genre (we miss you Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory) but with what we've played so far we're happy they've thrown their detective cap back in the ring.
Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind launch on Nintendo Switch on the 14th of May. Let us know if you're keen to pick either or both of these up!

A remake of an old first party Nintendo game that's actually an anime murder mystery is one of those things that probably won't appeal to most people, but it definitely appeals to me. That's a very specific niche I'm here for.
Though it is awkward that they're releasing both separately when Capcom realized the worth of doing a double pack physical release of these long stuck in Japan murder mystery games. Hope that changes at some point.
@kkslider5552000 You're absolutely right, it does feel like a missed opportunity to not release both of these as a physical pack here in the west. Especially given the fact both games release at the same time.
Maybe we'll get a physical edition down the road like we did for Cadence Hyrule Crypt of the I'm not writing out this game's full title...
The switch isn't 30 years old though
I’m looking forward to these, especially since it’s Mages doing the remake. Hopefully people give them a chance.
I love visual novels so I'm looking forward to this. I was too young to even know the originals existed, so it's nice I can try them now.
@kkslider5552000 It's not physical, but the games are sold together here in Europe.
wish there was an option to play the originals localized, still so cool though!
Wow, Mages did the remakes? Pretty cool.
Oooh, I’ll definitely be giving this a watch come bedtime! Not quite sure why exactly, but I’m really interested in these games. Gotta love that Nintendo seal of quality.
Never played the originals, this looks very interesting!
I'll give this a watch tonight. I'm actually moving out of my current place in a few hours so I got to do some final packing and cleaning.
That being said, I wish there was a physical release for these titles. I've been dedicating 2021 to clearing out my backlog so if it's not getting a physical release then I'll wait to purchase and play these games.
Now release the original Famicom version in English translation to, a la Fire Emblem!
@Chrysologus I agree. I want to experience the original properly if I’m experiencing a remake
Ever since I heard of these I've wanted to play them. I know they've rebuilt them from the ground up but the asking price for me is a little rich. I know you get a discount if you buy one of them, but still. I would say I'd wait for a good sale but Nintendo never has a hard sale on anything so, I guess I'll just have to suck it up one day and just grab it when it has one of their typical discounts.
closest thing to Danganronpa im gonna get on the switch
I'm actually interested, but there's no way I spend 60€ for a digital game. Sorry Nintendo.
@nessisonett I had no idea these remakes were made by MAGES until now. I’m even more excited.
@sheriff it’s still absolutely shocking that the Danganronpa series isn’t available on everything at this point. Best reasons to own a Vita.
Will this have an English dub?
@Snaplocket Thanks! That blows.
I'm still hoping for a physical release of the two so I can share it with a younger sibling.
I'll have to check this out later, my assumption is that based on the artwork/music the SFC version is the way to go when playing Girl of the Rear. (The Funimation translation /s)
And the Switch version for Part I because there is no other choice and even if there was FC graphics are icky.
I'm looking forward to them, have them preordered to help Ninty's niche works succeed.
This game desperately needs a graphics comparison! Its like night and day
I’m waiting for a physical.
@imgrowinglegs would love danganronpa on switch but I already own it on steam. At least I can use steam link to remote play it on my tablet though.
