Poll: Bravely Default II Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

Nope, not really interested. The first one didn't interest me and the demos were boring for me. I just wasn't feeling it.

I still have bravely default that I barely played 3 hours of...

It looks like a pretty solid JRPG, but I still have Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Octopath Traveler, and I Am Setsuna to finish. I can definitely wait for a good sale on this one.

Eventually. Persona 5 Strikers is just higher priority right now.

I bought it already. I’m just waiting for it to ship. I tried playing bravely default maybe 3 times since it came out, but I couldn’t get into it. Now I’m playing it once more with a walkthrough this time and I’m having fun. I hope to beat it soon so I could move onto bravely second and then bravely default 2.

The demo that came out a while back didn't really convince me

I still need to get through Octopath Traveler and Bravely Second! Five years should have been enough, but BS has been on my back burner for a long time now.

Ok so its amazing, the music is top notch and the game play is fun.. but as everyone else has said... i have dragon quest 11 to finish, octopath, and xenoblade 1 and 2 to finish.. soo even though i bought it day one... on the back log it goes

Yeah. Got lucky and got it day early. And already got a good 5+ hours on it.

Seems more or less about on par with the 3DS entries meaning a fairly solid JRPG adventure, the job system is what makes it for sure.

Unfortunately my weekend will be rather busy so I won't be able to play as much as I'd like.

Already got it, but due to delivery issues caused by our lovely doomsday scenario it won't get here in time.

I've avoided as much spoilers as possible and only hope that is has less smartphone game-esque nonsense than the original.

Without streetpass, the whole town building aspect falls flat on its face. That means shops, gear and even bonus bosses are lost.

I really hope BD2 is a tad more future proof...

Absolutely getting it once I have the opportunity! 😊 I can wait and buy the other RPGs later. Xenoblede Definitive Edition can until sometime in March.

I played 40 hours of the first one because I really like the combat. The town design is very pretty. I liked the way they implemented the dual job system but I never finished it because of glaring issues:

I realised I was not invested in the story at all and the over voice acting was annoying AF.

The dungeons were aggressively boring and left no impression.

Changing jobs when and as you discovered new ones is horrible as you have to grind all over again. You should be able to transfer Job points.

I played and enjoyed both previous entries - Yes, even THAT part of the first game, it wasn't THAT bad, internet - so this will be a future pickup. Not day one, however. My gaming budget will be going towards other titles for now.

Played the first ones and i do like them, but the Demo really turned me off.

I love Bravely Default as a whole, but I didn't see any preorder bonuses that made it worth while so I opted not to dive in on day one. I did pickup the reversible poster on My Nintendo... Been hoarding points for ages.

This is basically a new classic Final Fantasy, so yes, day one and most of my gaming time will go to this. I’m confident I will love this game to bits like its previous entry (except Bravely Second, still need to play that one).

Kinda disappointed there is no collectors edition.

I liked the 3DS games and the 2nd demo of BD2 was also great. So yeah, my copy will be arriving today.

@Wilforce I also just got the poster, which I wanted so badly. Needed a few points so I quickly played Mario Run for the weekly points and finished some story chapters in Fire Emblem Heroes. I didn’t want to miss out on it!

The first one was great but at the end, it got a little boring. The second one was just OK. I’m excited for this one. I played the demo and I wasn’t all that impressed but I can appreciate a good JRPG. A good RPG only comes out every 6 months so even if this one’s just OK, I’ll be all right with that.

Played the first one on 3DS. It became a bit of a grind fest by the end - the story was so convoluted even by RPG standards.

I usually keep my games. One of the few I actually sold.

Im not really interested, tried the one on 3DS and it quite bored me. As for nitpicks, the voices and visuals bother me.

Actually preordered last night from Nintendo.co.uk and you can select a free item from 4 available, I chose the Daeus X Machina metal plate, they also had the origami king oragami sheets and stickers and a few others available too

I dislike the character art enough for the 'safe' approach to not be enough for me. They needed to take this game to new heights, and the only things I've seen as interest worthy are the background environments.

Ner. I played the 3DS games and liked them to start with, but they just ended up feeling too generic for me, and nothing I've seen about this game suggests it's any different. Plus I think the art style has somehow got worse.

I’m interested but only if I can play it with Japanese voices, I found the English ones unbearable. But I haven’t found any info on it yet, anyone know?

@SeeEmilyPlay I agree, and usually do the same for any game with voice acting just because I find that I can immerse myself in the experience more and the Japanese is usually acted so much better. I heard you can change to Japanese or even turn off the voice acting altogether so that’s cool.

@SeeEmilyPlay Yes you can change to Japanese voices, I saw a review video where they talked about and demonstrated this.

It's pretty, but it's a JRPG: boring gameplay and seemingly linear story. I always get the feeling about those games that the combat/job system and stats are more of a dressing than an actual feature, only pretending to be deep, but the numbers are meaningless, aside from HP and MP. I will be trying out Triangle Strategy when I get the chance though.

Octopath Traveler was a hard taught lesson for me: I just can't stomach that kind of run-of-the-mill tedious turn-based combat like anymore. So pretty game, charming characters, epic story? Sure, but the gameplay needs to keep pace.
Do what other games have like Resonance of Fate or Final Fantasy VIIR have done: mix it up a bit. At the very least, you gotta make it feel exciting as Persona 5 did, even though at it core it wasn't.

I'll just wait for Triangle Strategy. Equally gorgeous and that kind of grid-based tactical play is still very much my cup of tea.

I'll pass on it for now. It looks fine, but there's too many other games that I'm more eager to play. I did like Bravely Default and Bravely Second, but wasn't blown away by either of them.

I own both Bravely Default and Bravely Second. Nearly finished the first one, haven't started the second.

I never played the first one so I'm a bit worried I won't be able to follow what's going on. I am interested but I'm waiting until I have actual time to sink into an RPG to pick it up. Work and school are both kicking my behind right now

Definitely, I'm sad to see people here dont share the same love for it as I do, but from my experience with the first two games, they really shine with their surprisingly hard difficulty which force you to come up with strategies via the job system.

I'm just waiting for Amazon to deliver it, so in the meantime I'll try finishing up Mario 3D World until it arrives.

I ´m playing octopath, and I have Fire emblem 3 houses, final famtasy X/X2, tales of vesperia in my backlog so I will wait before buying bravely default 2.

Already played 2 hours and am really enjoying it. I don't see the issue with the visuals as some others do, in fact I quite like them. But then again, I consider Link's Awakening to be the best looking Switch game at the moment. I do regret having started Ys 8 earlier this week though since this means I have less time to spend on BD2.

Of course. Even a great, albeit safe, classic RPG is worth playing. Not everything needs to be a world changing innovation

I bought and loved the first two, but I think they were exactly what I was looking for at that time in my life - solid, portable, turn based RPG's with good quality of life improvements and a few interesting new ideas. Not to mention the beautiful watercolour 3D dioramas that every town basically was (and in 3D on the 3DS of course!!).

That is of course not an option here, so we're already down from the first two. Then the reviews seem to be that this is largely more of the same, so a large but unsurprising JRPG. It took me a year to get through Octopath and I've barely touched FE:3H, I'm really not feeling another big RPG just now.

If I were furloughed or at school with the associated holidays I'd probably be all over this. As it is I'm struggling to muster any enthusiasm, which is an odd feeling considering I really enjoyed the 3DS outings.

Not really interested. I bought Bravely Second, but it completely failed to hook me and I think I gave it up after about five hours. And like everyone else here, I have an easy dozen other RPGs and other timesinks that I need to finish before I would consider giving this a shot.

@Ralek85 FF7R is just an action RPG with superficial RPG elements like numbers flying everywhere when you beat on enemies.

This game is something different, not everything had to play like Kingdom Hearts.

@suikoden bad measure to go by, Dragon Quest 11 sold well and I'm willing to bet people here hated it too.

An action-rpg by my definition success is determined by quick reaction, precise and well timed inputs.

I know very well what Bravely Default is. It's the exact same type of particular RPG design, that has been around for about 30 years. That was pretty much the mission statement from what I understand.

That's fine. I am just saying that some tropes of the genre have aged worse than others. The combat that is entirely determined by one ressource, time you spend on grinding, and that looks about as exciting as this sounds, is not one of the aspects of those classic jRPGs, that aged well.

And I don't think every game has to play like FFVIIR. I gave another example of a completely different, yet exciting and innovative system in RoF. There are tons more. I recently played a ton of "Star Renegades". The game took more than a few cues form Grandia for instance. Grandia's system has been so severly underused though, that this approach managed to feel fresh and exciting, with tons of more depth than BD ever managed to portray.

Then there is the aspect of presentation. Like I said, P5 was pretty rotten at it's core when it comes to the actual combat mechanics, which were ancient and hardly complex (basically stone, paper scissor after all). But it was presented in a way that it least made if feel exciting and look cool. That is at least something ...

Aciton RPGs are not solution by default. I mean, I'll point to FFXV and rest my case. Still, I think FFVII Remake is a recipe for success. If you play on highest difficulty, just "beating up on enemies and watching numbers fly" will get you nowhere. It will still feel very exciting though

I was interested to try it, but the demo really disappointed me. It just drops you into the middle of gameplay without explaining anything. It really put a newcomer like me off the idea of buying it. I'm waitimg for Project Triangle Strategy

I thought I disliked the character models, but seeing them in action in the demo I quickly came to like them. The monster designs are amazing. Music and environments are lively. Unfortunately my backlog of JRPGs is a couple of years long, so I probably won't be buying this for a while.

I borrowed the original and never finished it. I liked what was there but honestly most JRPGs end up boring me. Only JRPGs of recent memory I've finished were P5 and both Ni no Kunis, and the second of those was a huge disappointment to me.

I might give it a go in a few years at a deep eShop discount, but otherwise, firm pass.

I want to play this badly! However, I'm trying to be better this year and only buy games that I am going to play right away. I'm really enjoying my time in Ryza 2, so I want to finish that first before I start another big JRPG.

@Ralek85 I'm not here to convince you one is better than the other, I'm just tired of this age old argument of traditional turn based having to be mutually exclusive from active turn based or action based, especially considering the latter two styles are pretty old themselves.

JRPGs biggest strength is offering something for everyone. Calling something outdated is subjective, and as I recall Dragon Quest 11, Pokemon, and Persona still sell well because there are audiences for these games, stop trying to backwards rationalize it by assuming the games succeed in spite of their gameplay.

I personally didnt enjoy FF7Rs new game mechanics, I enjoy the originals combat a lot more, and I say that as a young guy before you pull the nostalgia card. Just accept this game isnt for you, it doesnt need to be something else.

Went off JRPG's after the gamecube era, and while I know Skies of Arcadia and Baten Kaitos weren't perfect, no JRPG since has had as much atmosphere, experience, charm or care put into it since for me. Hell, I still think Baten Kaitos looks incredible to this day, even more so than this Switch game!

I’ve just finished playing the first two hours. It is a great game. There’s some grinding involved, but the quality of life makes it so much easier. If you’re a fan or you love RPG‘s get this game.

The fact that they made improvements upon players feedback from a demo and the fact they acknowledged that Bravely Second was a flop made me buy this.

I'm getting it in march, I can't wait to try it out. Never played the other 2 games, I was hoping they'd be ported to Switch

I'll buy this but not on day 1. There's no special edition to warrant me going out and trying to buy this now or to have preordered weeks/months ago. Since it's Square Enix, I'll wait for the inevitable eShop sale before I buy it....or maybe find it on sale at retail somewhere down the road.

Persona 5 Strikes is occupying my time at the moment.

I played the first Braveley Default game last year and loved it. But the first demo for this one was underwhelming, and I never got around to trying the second demo.

@Muh-ario It's not about what is "better" or "worse" - at least not to me. From where I stand, games played like BD for virtually the entirety of my gaming life. Even if something were, let's say, objectively "best" at some point, it will become stale. And while I agree on your point, that not everything has to be for me, I think you are off the track there. I am not asking for everything to be for me, but I am asking for more jRPGs to embrace less stale combat mechanics, because there a) there is still a ton of things I enjoy about the genre and b) combat in and off itself CAN be fun rather than a chore. I did not mind the combat in RoF for instance, despite it being a super grindy, because it took a lot of effort to master, it was highly rewarding in the end while master and played out in a visually appealing manner.

I admit, that might be subjective, but to me that is about as close as one can get to an objective measure of "good" combat system. At least, I would be curious to hear, why someone would prefer a shallow system, or a system that plays out in static status boxses for instance.

Anyways I said it's not about that. Of THESE games, there are not that many around. As they were not traditionally made this way. I mean, that I keep pointing to RoF, aka a game 11 years old at this point, is quite telling.

In other words, getting a well-made, epic, single-player AAA jRPG is not as common as it used to be. Out of that limited quantity of games, there are even less that feature, what I roughly detailed above as good combat.

FFVIIR is not an action game. God of War is an action game.

I never argued that games like DQ11 are a success despite anything. Look at Pokemon. That is the most stale franchise in the entire universe from mechanics to visuals, the game barely moves an inch from release to release. Still, selling 20 Mio. units is not without the franchises grasp, numbers much more technically accomplished and more mechanically engaging games can only dream of and will never ever reach.

@Muh-ario So, it's fair to see that not every game needs to appeal to me, it's also fair to say that not every game needs to be in service of the lowest common denominator, which tends to be the "comfort food" approach. Something is not "good" after all because it is succesful or popular. Pokemon is a great example, because I loved the games as a kid. Alot of things about it appealed to me, but the games quickly became so formulaic in every respect, with the combat still adhering to ideas born out of the limited ressources of the original Gameboy, that I gave up on them.

I have high hopes for Pokemon Legends Arceus though. Moving away from random battles for good, switching to a proper 3D view (though there is nothing inherently wrong with 2D or sprites work at all), no transition to a "combat screen", open-world design approach (nothing inherently better here either, but a big shakeup for Pokemon) ... if the combat is less menu-driven and offers more depth combined with more engagment, I might go back to Pokemon for the 1st time in a very long time.

Last but not least, personally, I did love Person 5 to death top to bottom despite the combat. Like I said, much to love about the genre still, but DQ I just couldn't love despite all its strength in visuals, music, likeable characters, gorgeous world and - what I assume - would have been a compelling story. The combat was eyewatering boring, and I did not feel any signficant improvement from my favourite DQVII on the PS2 like 16 years ago. In fact, it felt almost identicial and that to me was indeed an issue, because even back in 2006, there were deeper combat systems around, that just allowed for far more player expression.

@Ralek85 again this is subjective, I dont mind trying new things with a genre, but to say a core gameplay mechanic(in this case turn based combat) should be something else entirely is where I have a problem. So it's best to just agree to disagree, i personally dont like the Kingdom Hearts or Xenoblade style of more active combat, which is why there are games like Dragon Quest, Bravely Default, and the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicles for my taste.

To me this argument is as tired as people who demand the Souls games have an easy mode, when the appeal of the games are the difficulty and there are already a plethora of easier action RPGs to play instead.

@Muh-ario I never referenced Xenoblade though, definitely not Kingdom Hearts, which is pretty much an action-game first and foremost. I am not sure why you would frame any of this as an either-or-argument anyways.

That's what I was trying to say. RoF is a turn-based game after all. No amount of John-Woo-inspired flashiness can change that. But it also a game that is based around of tons of compelling mechnaical considerations: like how to use the 3D dimensional space around you, how to position characters vis-a-vis one another and the enemies, you have line-of-sight as an actual consideration in a turn-based jRPG.

All these things allow for much more varied interactions between the player and game. A system that has two parties hitting each others with turn-based actions on a static 2D field simply can't do that. That is before and after we consider that we've been hitting enemy parties in turn-based fashion on static 2D fields for 30 years now

In short, I cannot name a one game besides RoF that playes liek RoF. I can name about 300 hundred games that play like Bravely Default.

That is not subjective, and I don't like how you are trying to forcefully frame it that way. BD is - mechanically speaking - a dime a dozen. Everyone who likes to play games like that is well served whether this game caters to their taste or not.

Not sure how Souls figures into that. It's really personal preferences whether you want it to have an easy mode or not. jRPGs being very laser focused, in the vast majority, on a combat approach that is three decades old is a lot of things. It is not subjective though. Whether you like that or not is subjective, but that is a moot point as the numbers speak such a clear language.

@Ralek85 again I dont care for RoFs style, I prefer the style BD caters to, which hasn't been the norm since the late 90s, so it makes it more annoying when people like you complain about the one game catering to a niche when there are so many other choices instead.

And numbers do speak volumes, Dragon Quest and Pokemkn sold well despite being traditional turn based.

I really enjoyed the first 2 games. The demo for this game on Switch just did not hook me. I am not sure what it is. I am glad other people get to enjoy it on Switch.

It just looks super generic, i like the combat but the art is a bit meh. I might try it if it goes on sale at some point
