Nintendo's been making waves with its latest foray into the toys-to-life genre, namely the crocheted Yarn Yoshi amiibo which takes on a plush, more toy-like form than the plastic statues found in the rest of the lineup.
In this video we unbox the blue version of this cuddly critter and see how he and the rest of the amiibo range work within Yoshi's Woolly World on the Wii U.
If you've not already subscribed to the Nintendo Life YouTube channel then you can click here to rectify this terrible affliction!

Cool box! Please notice that if you use a regular non-yarn Yoshi, you get the classic non-yarn Yoshi in-game as your clone which I reckon is really neat! He looks like he is made out of inflatable balloons!
I hope you guys enjoy, this is the closest most of you will get to unboxing one yourself >:3
"a bit of a firm ass" Didn't think that was allowed on here.
So, do people really pronounce it Ya-she, I didn't know Yo-she was Canadian.
Nice vid, now I want the game even more. And the US doesn't even get Ganandorf until Sept either I believe. Reggie is making us all pay every chance he gets.
Most fun I've see anybody have on this site in awhile. Does anybody remember laughter?
I don't like how Nintendo is handling the amiibo situation, but still, I MUST GET ALL THREE COLORED YOSHI YARN AMIIBOS!!!
@Shiryu - Ah, your a knowledgeable chap, have you seen silver Mario amiibo show up silver in any game? I know gold Mario does something gold in MP10 but Google can't find a single thing silver Mario does. I still have him in the box but am considering returning him for my $13 back if he's just another Mario. Return by date on the receipt is next Wednesday.
@rjejr Sadly neither of those are even supposed to be released in Europe AFAIK and as such I can't test them. You should not return it, it's a worthy collectors item (I never keep any amiibo in the box, but I do keep my rare Skylanders because I can play with them inside the box).
That box of arts and crafts is a really creative marketing idea. The game looks great, I may have to get it.
@Shiryu - Thanks. I'm not really a collector. We have over 70 SKylanders and the kids play w/ them like toys, same for amiibo and Disney INfinity, and soon Lego Dimesnions, some are broken into pieces. I bought silver Mario hopeing that silver would be put to use in Spaltoon as an ink color or for unlocking FLUDD or at least make Yoshi silver. Or a silver Mario in SMM. At this point I'm just wondering if there is even anything in his chip that identities it as silver that could even be used in any future game. If it's just a paint job thats kind of a scam to me.
If you know anything about Skylanders which you seem to, we have at least 3 Spyros - I call them bronze gold and silver, forget their real names, and each is treated differently by the games. Well at least the early games, haven't tried them in Trap Team yet.
Thanks again though.
Cool yarn yoshi amiibo. I guess it's pretty cool that they sent you a big box, full of yarn, to create your own yoshi world. But I really didn't expect, so this quite a surprise.
@rjejr I am fairly certain that those silver (and gold) amiibos are indeed differentiated from regular Mario, I was made to understand that they show up in gold and silver in Mario Party 10 at least but don't quote me on that...
If I had knew what I was getting in the first time I bought a Skylander, I would be a far richer man today and had a lot of less plastic to clean. No regrets mind, I still think toys-to-life are an excellent concept, wish they had them when I was a kid, but I do believe they are saturating the market with so many different versions.
GENUINE QUESTION: Why do you guys in the UK pronounce Yoshi as "YAW-shi" instead of "YO-shi" and Mario as "MAY-rio" instead of "MAW-rio" despite official games pronouncing them in the latter ways? Just an ignorant American asking.
@Shiryu
Does the Smash series amiibo work too?
@TeeJay
I'm from the UK and have always pronounced it as YOshi and MArio. But most of my pals so it the way Alex does so maybe I'm the anomaly!
@Mogster Yes, the video I posted above was made with only Splatoon and Mario Party amiibos. Here is the video with regular Super Smash Bros patterns if anyone is interested.
@TeeJay The correct pronunciation of Yoshi is like in the video above.
@scamander So then why do Reggie and the Smash Bros announcer both say "YO-shi"? Official Nintendo people and basically, well, everyone else pronounces them this way, as far as I know the UK and just the UK alone pronounce it as "YAW-shi". That's why I'm confused as to why that's the case.
Do you have anything to back up your argument?
How much will the Yoshi Yarn amiibo cost in the U.S.?
Is it more expensive than the regular amiibo in the UK/Europe??
@TeeJay General rules of pronouncing words, you wouldn't pronounce the "O".
@TeeJay "So then why do Reggie and the Smash Bros announcer both say "YO-shi"? Official Nintendo people and basically, well, everyone else pronounces them this way, as far as I know the UK and just the UK alone pronounce it as "YAW-shi"."
You're wrong. Japan, the whole of Europe (not onyl the UK), Yoshi himself (!) and basically everyone else except the US pronounce his name exactly as in the video above. And that's including official Nintendo people from those countries. I'm from Germany and I've never heard someone pronounce his name in the way you do.
@MikeW: In Europe it costs 20€ ($22,50), while all other amiibo costs 15€ ($17). (Yes, amiibo are hilariously expensive in Europe in general)
So cute.
Nintendo bugs me with so many of the things it does these days but boy are there a whole bunch of these amiibo I'd just love to collect; if I could afford them.
It's pure geekism.
@Kirk Honestly, I wish I had never started it at all. Now I have to collect them all thanks to my OCD. My poor wallet.
@scamander Well that was Ninty's plan from the get-go and it's clearly working wonders lol
@Kirk I just have to force myself to not think about the amount of money I already spent on amiibo, lol.
@scamander As do most lol
Can you actually buy this?
@TeeJay I think it is just the British accent and the american accent. Some say it YO-shi, some say it YAW-shi, some say it YOR-shi. I too, found it odd (to me) how americans pronounced Mario as MOR-io. But its just how we speak.
I do hope Alex is going to make something with all that craft stuff. MAKE A YOSHI!!!!!
... did they include the pattern to make a Yoshi out of the yarn? If you could put that on the site, odds are I'd fill my room with yarn Yoshis...
Got all 3 but haven't opened any yet... I can't decide whether to open green or blue - they look so adorable in their little boxes peeping up at you
@TeeJay er we don't
@Shiryu - "but I do believe they are saturating the market with so many different versions."
When my wife and I were first discussing marriage and kids we said we wouldn't have kids until both Pokemon and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers went away. My kids are 10 and 12 now.
There will always be kids, therefore there will always be toys, therefore there will always be NFC game related toys. Even if home consoles and handhelds go away there will be NFC tablets. I bet in a couple of years all tablets have NFC inside. And in a few more years NFC chips and 3D printers. I view 3D printers as the logical successor to PlayDoh and that is going on 60 years. They need to come down to about $300 like a home console or Lego Mindstorm but I view it as inevitable.
@rjejr ... and allI ever wanted was an hoverboard.
I always squee when I see that yarn Yoshi. That big nose, d'aww. I'm sure my kid sister would LOVE that amiibo (she's not big into games, but likes stuffed animals and Yoshi). Don't have WiiU myself, but the game looks good.
Best video yet.
I refused to buy into the Amibo concept... Until I saw that adorable Yoshi... Then I bought one with the game... I dear
They were sold out in minutes. Seriously, Nintendo...you had months to anticipate demand (and it was blatantly obvious everyone wanted one, even the non-believers so to speak)...
You made such a small batch that you had to move the release date in the US 4 months AND already do a re-run before they hit store shelves...seriously...WHY. HOW. UGH.
I am one of the lucky ones and managed to buy all three (but at three different stores) but I feel for the target audience of those things namely: kids.
That said...The game is beyond amazing and the amiibo themselves are my favorite amiibo so far.
Well, congratulations to those who managed to buy 1 let alone all 3! I was at my store at 10am Friday and they had all gone. I just had a look on Amazon and some stores are like 6 in stock left..hurry...£42.65 each. This should be illegal. And these unboxing videos are just in bad taste rubbing it in. BOOOO! Far too much effort needed to buy these DARN Yoshi amiibos (see what I did there!).
@GrailUK
What should be illegal, people who pulled their fingers out and pre-ordered stuff they knew would be in great demand because the manufacturer is purposely releasing those items in short supply to max out their hype is that?
Even now at this very moment in time, 00.14 CET Monday/23.14 BST Sunday you can get the game and green Yoshi bundle for under 50 quid from gameseek.co.uk so I don't see what you're droning on about.......if you're too lazy/ignorant to pre-order highly desired items then you've only got yourself to blame really.
Harsh but true and we all know the truth sometimes hurts hohum
@Chasloyal I see that Amiibo is your life. I hope it works out for you...
@GrailUK I have plenty of time on my hands, though I'd point out my life has far more important things than Amiibo in it I'm more than happy to let you think that if it makes you feel better about your rather lame complaint.
I'd have thought a thank you would have been far more apt than a dig but it's fine you keep playing the Scouser, believing you're some kind of victim.
@Chasloyal I am not a victim lmao (do you read what you type??) I am disappointed. I can't even begin to get my head around the idea of '..feelin better about a complaint.'
@Chasloyal About being a 'victim' this just made me think:
Dear Community
There are people suffering everyday because they cannot find the amiibos they so desperately crave. But with your help, for just £3 a month, you can help bring some joy to their helpless lives..etc etc
So no...not victim hahahah because that's just absurd!
