Love this list. Such a great way to get a visual of video game history overall. And it's insane to see just how much is playable on one console. This list got me thinking a lot...
There are a few years that just don't make sense. Minecraft is arguably one of the most 3-4 games of all time at this point. Basically every new game that comes out has some crafting element based on it. Skyrim, while culturally important for it's time, is nothing close to Minecraft in terms of being a "Landmark" game.
GTA3 is such an easy choice over Ikaruga. No offense, but schmups haven't been influential in gaming in this century. GTA3 popularized so many features of open work gameplay and "adult" themes in games that are still seen today. Choosing Ikaruga over GTA3 for a landmark game in the same year is an incredibly rough choice. Games have evolved, but schmups really haven't changed in 25+ years.
Diablo II over Majora's Mask makes more sense. Majora's Mask is literally my favorite game of all time, but it's not had the impact of Diablo in any sense. I'm always willing to forgive if Majora's Mask gets some recognition, however.
96 made choosing hard! Mario 64 is the right choice for gaming history, but man it feels weird leaving the best-selling version of what might be the most valuable IP in existence off the top spot. I don't disagree, but that would have been a fun discussion in the office (were it available - I'm assuming Pokemon should arrive on NSO but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't given it's delay in getting a virtual console release).
I'm not sure I see Okami being the choice for 06. It has acclaim, sure, but was it a bigger release than the series it's allegedly competing against that also just happened to feature a wolf? Twilight Princess ended up being less transformative than hoped (reactions to that 04 debut trailer still give me chills), but I think that's a debate to be had.
This list reminded me that Chrono Trigger isn't playable on Switch somehow.
Being a gamer and a person who has kept up with gaming for decades, I admit in the recent 4-5 years I've lost touch with gaming news outside of the Nintendo realm. But in 2012 I was paying attention. I have never heard of Fez. I'm guessing this is the case of a lot of the games released that year not quite making the jump to switch yet, but looking at releases that year shows Diablo III and Mass Effect 3. If Fire Emblem Awakening was payable on switch, would it win if only for the reasons of keeping the franchise alive and giving us so many characters in Smash Bros?
2019 was the only other year I couldn't quite agree with, but I looked at the releases for the year (for everything) and there isn't much there. Slay the Spire? Fire Emblem Three Houses? Personal favorites for sure, but not landmark releases. It just feels weird giving Dragon Quest recognition in 2019 instead of the 90s. Recognizing Untitled Goose Game in this list and not having Dragon Quest anywhere would also be a strange choice.
A favorite of mine that I don't see mentioned is Robopon. It's a Pokémon knock off with robots. One of my favorite features was a base building feature that you could build up as the game went along. I thought it also had a fairly compelling battle system and quirky robots that have it done good replayability.
The GBA sequel is also a great game but plays significantly differently. Closer to DQ/FF than Pokémon but still with Robot collecting.
Never played a VC game before... this looks like it plays like Steamworld Heist in 3D. Am I far off? I see what appear to some real time elements with the tank thing, but otherwise everything seems to be largely turn based.
Game reminds of World of Warcraft, in that it looks like a 14 year old game. Gameplay itself doesn't look all that enjoyable either from those little tidbits. Given that game has 1-2 years to release there's a chance that stuff gets cleared up, but I'd be surprised.
This reminds of a game I played on my iPod several years ago. That game was fun, but it got boring pretty quick. I don't see anything to differentiate this much, which isn't a bad thing, but I doubt this game will be cheap enough to justify a buy.
This would be beautiful. I really loved the GBA remake, and I having the VC allowed me to play both 1 and 2 as they originally were. I honestly didn't know there was a 3rd (Nintendo only gaming has it's flaws), so I would obviously welcome a remake of that along with a new title. Heck, the Shining Soul series has some potential too. Camelot is responsible for a ton of IPs I enjoy, so I'm good with them doing any of their non-sport titles really.
I probably won't be able to catch these as my town just doesn't have the population to pull together a big enough group to be able to take them down. Add that apparently super low catch rate and I'm not super hopeful that I can actually catch these. And Articuno is my favorite Pokemon
Looks fun, but I much prefer single player experiences. As long as I can play on my own, this looks like a great game for me. If it's basically only PvP, I'm not interested.
Longest Five Minutes is looking really interesting. I'm not sure how that premise will actually affect gameplay in any discernible way, but at the very least it's a neat idea.
As others have mentioned, the level 35 thing is only temporary, so there's no need to cater the hate that this game seems to attract and make this sound like a permanent thing.
That said, I do wonder if there will be level caps for future raids for legendaries or ultra rare Pokemon. I've been playing since day 1 and I'm "only" level 32. It took me about 4 months to level up from 31, even with Lucky Egg mass evolving. Getting to level 30 takes a good 6-7 months of consistent (1+ hour per day) play time. If level caps continue based on the rarity/power of the Pokemon, I think there'd be some valid complaints. Anyone above 25 should be able to participate in any raid.
@RupeeClock I suppose I get the idea of the limit being what it is because I'm guessing that Raid Bosses won't be scaled to the levels of the players attacking it. But yes, in more populated areas I can see it being problematic where players will be left out simply due to the player limit. Unless the events are repeated and/or lock out previous successors (which is doubtful), I can see this causing some frustration.
These are pretty awesome. I'm a little bothered by the Raids being limited to 20 people and only having a 5 minute timer is very limiting considering the connection issues the game sometimes has, especially with gyms. Overall this is a pretty cool addition though. I guess this will be how they will release legendaries from now on.
This may convince to drop a few bucks. Also, still no mention about the fan voting event, and what they plan to do about Ike and Lyn almost a full month later...
That honestly looks amazing. I guess my only concern is going to be how much action is present. A game like that needs breaks to explain the story through the environment since there doesn't appear to be text.
Honestly the first test fire was the reason I never considered the original. The windows for actually trying the game were so ridiculously small that I couldn't even try the game out once, and the whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. This truly is terrible way to try to build hype for a game.
The complexity of the controls alone preclude this game from being accessible. There's no chance this could be somebody's (especially an adult) first video game without significant frustrations. My parents, who played the older arcade and atari games couldn't understand smash bros. I shudder to think how they'd handle this.
I'm pretty concerned about a permadeath mode of any sort in this kind of game, but everything else sounds really good to me. I'm starting to feel like I don't have to hoard feathers anymore, which is nice.
@thesilverbrick Again, there is no punishment anywhere. Nobody is being harmed by this. It can simply be a bad REWARDS program. You bought a game, you aren't entitled to anything beyond that.
@JaxonH The article seems to suggest the game cartridge you use is registered to your account. It's unlikely you can register and receive coins from the same cart multiple times based on that.
As someone who's played Puzzle & Dragons for literally 4 years, I can say this is the same model, and it's fair as long as orbs can be obtained regularly through daily/weekly play.
Also, the FE Direct seemed to suggest that when you role for a new character that you'd be rolling from a pool of predetermined characters. It seemed like you were guaranteed that you could get all characters in that pool if you rolled enough. In the direct, it showed 5 potential characters and after each roll the cost of subsequent rolls decreased and the character you just received was removed from the available pool. Maybe I misunderstood that, but if that's the case, that's beyond fair.
I have little interest in FE Warriors, but I really want some information on the mobile title they have coming. Unless this is a deep dive into both/either title, I can't imagine this direct taking up even 20 minutes unless they're revealing something else. Best guess is VC releases only because it seems too early to announce a new FE title (that could release this year).
Being that it's a gaming system, simply having a strong line up either available at launch or confirmed for the initial year is enough. Everything else is just a matter of making sure the system itself is marketed properly and is user friendly (which hasn't been the case for the last several systems for different reasons).
@JaxonH I didn't want to give the impression that Fates is awful, I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as I did with previous entries. I agree with the maps being fantastic, and most of the actual mechanics and flow in the game were exceptional. I won't say that previous FE entries had pristine writing or stories, but Fates, especially Birthright, was just flat out bad in terms of story and character development. I liked the idea of seeing both sides, but the execution just didn't land, in large part due to Corrin being so poorly written and predictable.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I'm not sure about Browny, but for those of use who played previous Fire Emblem titles, Fates (and Awakening) have been pretty big departures from the first 10 titles in the series. Fates in particular suffered from a pretty terrible story no matter which version you picked (although Conquest wasn't too bad). I think the review understates how integral claiming humans is to actually clearing a map. Your slimes are basically useless in combat (one hit from most humans will deal significant damage if not outright knocking them out in one hit). It's definitely fun, and packs a surprising challenge even on the lower difficulty settings.
Anyone who left Resident Evil 4 off their list must not have played it. RE4 might be the only time Nintendo didn't make the best game for their console. Not to mention the massive impact the game had on the industry as a whole. Such a fantastic game.
Punch Club actually looks pretty fun. I put a lot of time into those Kairosoft games, and this one looks a lot like it. Hollow Knight looks interesting too, but that'll depend on pricing for me.

I'm interested, but not at that price at all. The historia released just above $20 as I recall. I can wait for a price drop for a book I'll look at once.
I definitely would have gobbled this up back in 2001. If it ever gets an official release, I'll get it. Here's to hoping for an eShop/VC release in the future.
I've been impressed so far. The college I go to has a group of 8 poke stops and a gym all right by each other. I used to walk my dog around campus and not see a soul. Now I see something like 20-30 people grouped together with lured-up pokestops. It's kinda cool
99 cards is probably plenty, but there still needs to be something in place so that you can't just run out of attacks. Also, the quote about the story doesn't actually say anything other than you'll figure out what's happening as you play the game... That's usually how stories work.

@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I'm not sure about Browny, but for those of use who played previous Fire Emblem titles, Fates (and Awakening) have been pretty big departures from the first 10 titles in the series. I think the review understates how integral claiming humans is to actually clearing a map. Re: Buddy Pokémon Arrive in GO Update as Niantic Continues to Target "Bots and Scrapers"
I'm so excited. My Dratini would love to be a Dragonite.
Re: Rumour: Buddy Pokémon Could Be on the Way to Pokémon GO
@CB85 Even with Magikarp, the most you have to catch is 101. If you hatch any from eggs, that number drops. That's not to say that the candy system is necessarily fair, but you don't have to catch "hundreds" of anything. Plus, Magikarps are pretty common if you have access to literally any body of water.
Now if we're talking rarer Pokemon, that's where the candy system fails pretty miserably. Catching/hatching enough of them requires a lot of luck and a lot of time.
Re: Rumour: Buddy Pokémon Could Be on the Way to Pokémon GO
This might be the only way I get my Dratini up to a Dragonite, so please let this happen soon. Same for my starting Charmander up to a Charizard.
Re: Niantic Pushes Out a New Pokémon GO Update
@KittyKatta It's kinda hard to say 10k eggs are more rare unless you have some actual data to back that up. I've only had 2 ever, both after the infamous update. I was level 20 by that update, by the way.
Re: Dark Horse Unveils The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts, Another Extravagant Hardback Book
