Pokémon Yellow Version did something a bit different when it came out by allowing players to have their Pikachu out of its Pokéball, faithfully following the player around the overworld if it was in their party. The feature then disappeared and didn't come back until Pokémon Heartgold and Soulsilver, where it was expanded to allow any Pokémon to follow the player. Now, data miners have uncovered data that seems to suggest the feature could be on its way to Pokémon GO.
Though the feature obviously hasn't been implemented yet, it's expected that it could show up as early as the next update. Here's what's been found:
- Pokemon Buddy System is using the same server side distance calculation as the one used for Pokemon Eggs
- Walking your Pokemon Buddy will award you with candy. The amount of candy is yet to be determined.
- You can walk the same Pokemon Buddy multiple times, but there is likely a daily limit for obtained candy
- You can walk with only one Buddy Pokemon at a time
- There are various looks of Buddy Pokemon
- Medium size
- Big size
- Flying next to you
- Rests on your shoulder
Obviously, this could be a while off – we still don't have natures, after all – but it makes one wonder what else Niantic could be working on.
What do you think? Would you like to see this implemented? What other new features would you like to see? Drop us a comment in the section below.

That's pretty neat!
Well this is good because I always wanted my original starter I chose at the beginning to be a high cp. Seems like it will in a distant future.
"HEY MAGIKARP, TIME FOR A WALK!"
Ok that's pretty cool.
On an unrelated note, AC HHD seems to have had a permanent price drop to $20 on the eShop.

Meanwhile, TG-16 classic Bomberman '94 has been rated by the ESRB for a Wii U VC release.

@Mega_Yarn_Poochy I can't imagine the candy generation being huge, maybe one or two every kilometre maybe.
"I've walked this Magikarp for over 100km now, I must have heaps of Candy!" checks phone "200? ...Well I'm halfway at least." XD
This might be the only way I get my Dratini up to a Dragonite, so please let this happen soon. Same for my starting Charmander up to a Charizard.
@IceClimbers Highly recommend anyone even slightly interested in it to play it.
My main problem with New Leaf was that I just wanted to make a house and town that was mine, without doing all these chores.
With HHD, I'm able to easily create detailed houses with hundreds, possibly thousands, of items at my disposal.
Sure it might not have any sort of reveiw system, but HHD is still a fun, charming experience that's surprisingly deep.
Yes, this is splendid! I could finally actually raise a starter, which I have only found two or three of each so far. I wish I kept my original charmander, but with the catch-based level up/evolve system as it is he was useless since I never found more charmander, so I turned him into candy, sadly.
I still have a 400-something cp charmeleon who would be a good candidate for walking for candies, though!
tracker
Can we get the tracking fixed, first?
I never understood why they put in starter Pokémon in the first place, if there's no way to get them to evolve.
Well the power-up/evolution system in the game's rubbish anyway, what with the need to catch dozens to literally hundreds in some cases of the same Pokémon, then trade them in for candy and manually evolve them. :/
@CB85 Even with Magikarp, the most you have to catch is 101. If you hatch any from eggs, that number drops. That's not to say that the candy system is necessarily fair, but you don't have to catch "hundreds" of anything. Plus, Magikarps are pretty common if you have access to literally any body of water.
Now if we're talking rarer Pokemon, that's where the candy system fails pretty miserably. Catching/hatching enough of them requires a lot of luck and a lot of time.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy im not a big fan of new leaf is HHD any better...
@IceClimbers I was in Target today and noticed HHD was $19.99 next to ACNL. Didn't think to check to eShop, assumed it was a Target thing, their entire Nintendo aisle is getting very empty, and they've been putting a lot of Wii U games on clearance - Bayonetta 2, XCX Mighty #9, old Just Dance games. I'm hoping they are just making room for NES Mini.
@JaxonH I know New 3DS XL is $174.99 on the Target website, but there was a big $199.99 sticker in store, next to the big $79.99 2DS sticker.
On topic. I like pets in games. Familiars. Whatever you want to call them. So yes, good addition. I wonder if they'll coincide it w/ PG+. People have been playing this game fine for 2 months, will they really decide to spend $35 on a bracelet at some unknown point in the future?
Rests on your shoulder ?
A Bird Pokemon ?
@hieveryone If you liked home designing, they you'll love HHD.
I don't really play this too much anymore, but I'd still be up for something like this to be implemented. Hopefully they make some cool updates because I would love to be addicted to this game like I was during the first few weeks of release.
So many Magikarps are going to splash around with their owners in the future
@Anti-Matter Tiny pokemons in general, Rattatas etc.
That's a really neat idea, but not necessarily something I think really makes Pokemon Go that much more appealing. I don't get attached to any Pokemon I find in Go. It would be REALLY nice if this feature returned for Sun and Moon...
butt...
How about implementing the pokemon staple mechanic called trading and pvp battle first?
@nf_2 Oh I didn't know that, well then maybe not hundreds, but still dozens. And I live near plenty of water, but still only managed to get 4 or 5 Magikarp. Meanwhile, I've caught well over 100 Rattatas, Weedles, and what must've been over 9,000 Pidgeys. -_-'
I get that some Pokémon are supposed to be rarer than others, but still it would've been nice to see a bit more variety. At this rate, I'll never catch anywhere close to all Pokémon, let alone evolve them... XD
I live in a decent-sized city, and have been using the app daily since about a week after it came out, and so far I've seen less than 40 different Pokémon. :/
So glad they are working on new features before all of the other broken stuff is fixed. If they think this is going to get people back in to playing it, it won't. It's a nice feature for later on, but right now it needs to have actual pokemon elements in it to make it feel like a pokemon game. And don't even get me started on the dumb tracker that's useless.
Although very handy, I do fear that it might reduce the lifespan of the game for a lot of people.
I'm kind of hoping they put some sort of cost into place that will balance it out and prevent certain players from getting even more of an unfair advantage than they already have... like making it cost stardust... that way people would basically have to choose between evolving and powering up, or have to play more in order to do both.
