Re: There's No Need To Be Afraid Of This Day One Update For Luigi's Mansion 3

mlj11

@Sean161 If corruption of storage / media is a factor in your calculus then to be fair you should include that as a potential problem of cartridges too.

As for your other points I think I've already addressed that by proposing you just leave the digital game data perpetually saved on the SD card. At least in this way you have the full final game with patches and digital DLC.

Re: There's No Need To Be Afraid Of This Day One Update For Luigi's Mansion 3

mlj11

@Kid_Sickarus Fair point and a good observation. I'm quite pleased by the frequency of the sales on the eShop though - it's almost as if Nintendo has taken notes on Steam's success and are implementing similar practices (including attracting lots of indie titles too). Most of my eShop purchases have actually been made when a title I've wishlisted goes on discount.

I agree they still sell for more as compared to Steam, but as you said it can't be helped. I think Humble Bundle are offering digital Switch games in their store (although it's not available in my country)? Hopefully this is the start of increased storefront competitiveness and lower prices.

Re: There's No Need To Be Afraid Of This Day One Update For Luigi's Mansion 3

mlj11

Years of being a PC gamer who primarily uses Steam have made me very fond of digital-only games. The ease of access and not having to devote physical space to store cartridges / CDs are the best perks of being a digital owner.

However I can understand people wanting physical copies because they can loan out / sell the game after playing. That to me is probably the only compelling reason to go physical.

For any other reason I think Kalmaro has made excellent points why digital is more attractive. I'll just add that if people are concerned about no longer having access after the eShop goes down - why not consider just downloading the game and keeping it forever on (one of) your SD card(s)? The things are becoming so cheap nowadays and digital games also get frequent discounts; pound for pound the digital route is cheaper and less of a hassle than keeping a physical cartridge with an unpatched game (which is likely to be sans DLCs too).

As an example I intend to keep Breath of the Wild with all of the DLCs installed forever on my card. It's a landmark title that I'll show off for years to come and I have zero compulsion to display its case in some dusty cabinet somewhere. If or when my 400GB card runs out of space I'll just get a newer (and likely, bigger capacity) card in the future. Problem solved.

Re: Stardew Valley Creator Opts To Self-Publish Game On Switch Amid Chucklefish Allegations

mlj11

I'm not sure if anybody has made this point already: the volunteers signed up to do the work willingly without the foreknowledge that Starbound was going to be a success...

I'm going to be cynical and say that if the game had instead bombed, all these poor souls who are now complaining about being unpaid would never have complained about it; they'd just accept they did free work for the experience and to boost their portfolios (just like at the point when they signed the agreement).

My view is that these volunteers are exploiting the court of public opinion's recognition of Starbound's success to extort money from Chucklefish...

Re: Rocket League Ditches Randomised Loot Boxes In Favour Of New 'Blueprint' System

mlj11

Season passes in Rocket League give you access to new content, they're not much different to buying DLC in other games.

Loot boxes were quite the norm when Rocket League first came out several years ago. The devs removing this game mechanic should be applauded because it means they've learned from new developments in the industry; why criticize them for taking positive steps?

For context, Nintendo just published a mobile game in 2019 with loot boxes, even when their games are reportedly being restricted in places like Brussels because local laws prohibit this mechanic. I think people's righteous indignation against Psyonix could've been better channeled elsewhere.

Re: Poll: Is Your Switch Lite Suffering From Joy-Con Drift?

mlj11

@Old_Man_Nintendo

1) You missed the part where I said my Pro Controller also drifts. Fun fact, I actually use my Joy-Con very sparingly because I play mostly docked... Furthermore, your "small controller size" theory doesn't explain why my Pro and Joy-Con both drift, yet my SN30 Pro - whose size lies between the two, and which I use more often than the Joy-Con - doesn't.

2) I see you've made a concession that perhaps not everybody with a different experience outside your own limited anecdotal data behaves like a rough idiot on their electronic wares. Progress!

3) Nobody is saying this is a red ring of death scenario. Even if this problem might not reach such heights, there are still enough reports of people falling victim to this issue to suggest a problem on Nintendo's end instead of being caused by consumers.

I don't understand why the more fortunate people like you can't extend a little sympathy to those of us suffering from the problem, instead of pilling on our misery.

Re: Poll: Is Your Switch Lite Suffering From Joy-Con Drift?

mlj11

@Old_Man_Nintendo

My first console was the Mega Drive back in the early 90s so I've been gaming for some time; none of my other controllers with sticks have ever had drift. Cut to holiday season 2018 when I first got my Switch, and within just 4-5 months both my Pro Controller and Joy-Con were drifting. Meanwhile my 8bitdo SN30 Pro which I use more than my Joy-Con (I use it on Switch and my Android TV box) suffers no such problem.

Care to use your old man wisdom and explain to me why?

Re: Rumour: The Sailor Moon Manga In Punch-Out!! That Allegedly Cost Nintendo Millions

mlj11

Good advice not to believe everything we hear, especially if it's from unknown sources. That said, the story seems plausible enough - not only does the art asset appear to be from an actual manga, the way Nintendo allegedly acted also seems to be in line with what we know about them in the real world (i.e. they take a tough, no-nonsense approach towards copyright issues).

Re: Switch Lite Teardown Suggests It Has The Same Drift-Prone Analogue Sticks As Standard Model

mlj11

I've had drift on my Pro Controller too (in addition to my joy-con), so I've really been hoping for Nintendo to publicly say that they found the problem and have engineered a fix. But as it stands I seriously cannot allow myself to purchase another first party controller, despite how much I love the Pro Controller otherwise.

Using said that, I'm not entirely convinced by Spawn Wave's prognosis regarding the cause of the problem - other people claim that Nintendo's stick design isn't that different from Sony's or Microsoft's. I'm not sure what to think but will just limit my controller purchases to reliable third-party manufacturers for the foreseeable future.

Re: Review: Sayonara Wild Hearts - A Marvellous, Music-Driven Masterpiece

mlj11

"... tells the story of a young woman whose heart has been broken, and takes you on her emotional journey as she tries to come to terms with it and eventually move on with her life."

That's the exact same plot of Gris too!

Interesting that a few people here mentioned IGN's review - they seem to suggest that Sayonara is more of an experience and less of a game-game.

That technically is true of Gris as well, and since I was kinda disappointed with that game, I might give Sayonara a miss, or maybe just play it more cheaply on mobile.

Re: Video: Sega's Genesis Mini Gets The Tower Of Power Treatment

mlj11

Obligatory reminder here that Sega haven't re-released S3 / &K due to them probably having issues licensing the music.

Sadly, the artwork on this faux-cartridge is likely to be the only official S3 media we're gonna get from Sega. For dedicated Sonic aficionados, I recommend checking out the very cool fan-made mod/hack S3 A.I.R.

Re: Hands On: Overland Is A Game Where You Can't Always Save The Dog

mlj11

The game's gorgeous art style alone was enough to catch my attention all those years ago.

But past impressions of the gameplay (I recall at least one article from Rock, Paper, Shotgun discussing an earlier build) suggest it's not all that fun - when they say "hard choices" they actually mean "extremely gamey and silly choices". For example you might have to choose between taking a gas / petrol container OR an NPC along with you to the next stage, because apparently it's not possible to fit both of them in your car (or something else like that).

I'll wait for the reviews. I just hope this doesn't end up like Below.

Re: Streets Of Rage 4 Is Officially Coming To Switch, With A New Character

mlj11

I get why the new art style may not be to everyone's tastes, but really, I think the most important thing is how the gameplay feels.

In this regard I have high hopes given how authentic the remake of Wonder Boy: the Dragon's Trap was to the original.

If SoR4 sells well I'd love for lizardcube and DotEmu to be given the Golden Axe franchise to tackle next!

Re: Streets Of Rage 4 Is Officially Coming To Switch, With A New Character

mlj11

I'm bummed we can't play as Adam - he was my favorite character in SoR1 because he was Axel's equal in strength while also able to jump as high as Blaze (which came in really handy for some bosses).

Still I'm somewhat consoled by Shiva's appearance because that could mean we may get some secret unlockable characters!

Re: Review: Fire Emblem: Three Houses - The Zenith Of A Legendary SRPG Series

mlj11

For anyone concerned about weapon durability: don't be.

I found the weapon durability mechanic in this game to be quite manageable, and even enjoyable. I say this especially when comparing it to the one in BotW (saw quite a few others mentioning it above).

In BotW the majority of weapons were designed to break after dispatching maybe 2-3 enemies on average, and your only option after that happened was to hope to collect good replacements from your fallen foes or find some nearby. Unfortunately most enemies on BotW don't carry great weapons, so (in my 500+ hours I've played it) I tended to avoid many the majority of mobs as well as hoard good weapons and never actually use them.

Here in FE:3H weapons only break after ~40 hits, and in the early game each enemy takes maybe 2-4 strikes so you already get a lot more mileage from them. Also it's entirely transparent when a weapon is being worn down - you get a numerical counter on each weapon so you can plan ahead effectively. Moreover FE3H gives you the opportunity to buy, forge, repair and upgrade weapons in between battles so weapon scarcity is never much of a problem. With this system I found myself enthusiastically picking and actually using the best weapon for each encounter instead of being a hoarder like in BotW.

You do sometimes run into special weapons that have more esoteric effects, so I can't deny that I still did save some weapons for future use cases. But the repair mechanic and spacious inventory combines to make this a mostly carefree experience.

Overall I think Intelligent Systems handled the weapon durability mechanic extremely well, so don't worry if this aspect has held you back from getting this game thus far.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem: Three Houses - The Zenith Of A Legendary SRPG Series

mlj11

Hey everyone, I'm avoiding as much media as I can about this game (including this review) so I don't spoil my experience when I finally play it. Can anyone confirm this - if I buy the physical copy of the game but want the DLC too, I'll need to purchase the latter on the eShop? Or is there a full physical copy of the game for sale?

Re: Video: What Actually Causes Switch Joy-Con Drift?

mlj11

I don't have any shooter games on my Switch but yet my Joy-Con and Pro Controller both suffer from drifting.

If this problem is more user-caused and not a manufacturing / design defect, pray tell:

  • Why does my Pro Controller drift downwards but my Joy-Con drift right?
  • Why does my 8bitdo SN30 Pro (which I use more than my Joy-Con) not drift at all?
  • Why hasn't my Dualshock 3's (that I've used for YEARS now over various consoles and PC) suffer from drift too?

Re: Video: What Actually Causes Switch Joy-Con Drift?

mlj11

These articles are great, they help weed out all the annoying twits who not only can't empathize with those of us suffering from this widespread problem, but who will still take time out to leave snarky comments and rub salt in our wounds.

Re: Nintendo Releases Statement About Switch Joy-Con Drift Issue

mlj11

The left stick of my Pro Controller also drifts :< this is a design / material choice issue on Nintendo's part for sure. Their (very belated) acknowledgement of the problem is a start, but I really can't justify buying another 1st party controller until they commit to fixing it.

Re: Review: Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda - A Beat-Based Wonder

mlj11

@LordVal I didn't buy Cadence because of the price (there's arguably a Zelda tax being imposed here), but Celeste, Dead Cells and Hollow Knight are perhaps some of the best indie titles of all time. Maybe indie just doesn't suit your gaming tastes?

I'd suggest the next time you feel tempted by one, perhaps try it on Steam first so you have the option of refunding the game if you don't like it after the initial couple of hours.

Re: New Adapter Will Let You Use Switch Controllers With Your PS4 And Vice Versa

mlj11

I've gotten the dreaded downward drift issue on the left stick of my Switch Pro Controller.. This is very disappointing because it's relatively new - I only bought it around Black Friday last year. So I'll consider any alternative controllers until there is confirmation that Nintendo have cleaned up their act with a new batch of controllers with this defect fixed.

Re: QubicGames Nears 1 Million Sales On Switch, Celebrates With Huge Discounts And New Titles

mlj11

I've had my eye on Blazing Beaks on Steam for some time now while it's in Early Access - I hope it can be as good as Nuclear Throne, but progress on the game has been quite slow it seems. I'm surprised it's being announced for Switch at this stage.

Akane reminds me of Hyper Light Drifter, but the fact that it's an arena fight-till-you-die game kinda puts me off.

Warlocks 2 looks interesting though, if the combat mechanics are even half as good as Dead Cells then I'm in.
