Re: Hardware Review: 8BitDo Pro 2 - The Best Switch Pro Controller Rival Has Evolved

mlj11

I've tried a number of third party controllers over the years, and I think 8bitdo offers the best bang for your buck. Other controllers in the same price range don't have the same build quality and reliability.

I see a number of people here saying they have problems with their controllers, including sensitivity issues. I wonder if they know they can try to update their controllers' firmware? Regular firmware updates is one of 8bitdo's best features and really separates them from the rest of the pack.

Re: Sega Tops Metacritic's 2020 Publisher Rankings, Nintendo Squeezes Into Top Ten

mlj11

So many responses here that look like salty fanboys sticking their fingers in their ears... smh

No need to cast aspersions on metacritic just because you personally don't like the results of this ranking. It's a plain and simple fact that other publishers released better rated games in 2020 compared to Nintendo. If you're old enough to comment on the internet, you should be mature enough to deal with it.

Re: Dead Cells Has Now Sold 5 Million Copies Worldwide

mlj11

It has great support from the devs, but sometimes I wonder if the support might be too great... See, I also bought the game back on Steam during its Early Access period so I'm somewhat familiar with many of the iterations it's been through.

Thing is, the game gets tweaked a lot. Like, character builds and strats that carried you through the game in one update might be rendered completely and irrevocably useless in the next. Some examples that come to mind are the frost blast/ice bow builds that were awesome around v1.0, but have been nerfed almost beyond redemption now.

The devs also haven't been afraid to reverse course on balancing - once upon a time they thankfully made slower and more meticulous gameplay viable by easing up on speed-based rewards and giving more benefits to players who took the time to clear the map of mobs. But a more recent update to its "malaise" feature has made rushing the new meta again on higher difficulty levels.

As a longer time player I've mourned the loss of beloved builds because of the game's sometimes unpredictable direction, but I guess more occasional players may think it's cool to feel like they're getting a different game with each new update.

Re: Video: Square Enix Shows Off Balan Wonderworld's Local Co-Op Mode

mlj11

We shouldn't hope for a delay. 3D platformers aren't Square Enix's thing and clearly they didn't allocate enough of a budget for Naka to make the Nights homage he envisioned. The release deadline is part of the deal.

If we're lucky the game will raise enough earnings for SEnix to decide they can afford dev money to make improvements down the line.

Re: 8BitDo Reveals Its New "Pro 2" Bluetooth Controller, Compatible With Switch

mlj11

For those experiencing problems (like connection drops or syncing issues) with your 8bitdo controllers, I suggest visiting their website and getting their firmware updater.

Their software support is one of the best among third party brands; I've honestly lost count of the number of updates my original Pro+ has received by now.

Re: '80s-Inspired "Skateboating Game" Wave Break Splashes Onto Switch This Spring

mlj11

I suppose Miami Vice was an inspiration for them but the realistic guns look so jarring when juxtaposed against the cutesy characters... Maybe the game is supposed to be darker and more grimy than this trailer lets on, but if not, then I think they should consider re-texturing their weapons to be more colorful (like Nerf guns or something).

Re: Ori Director Criticises "Snake Oil Salesmen" Behind No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk, And Fable

mlj11

CDPR released Cyberpunk 2077 instead of allowing it to bake in the oven some more because they wanted their game to be on the minds of next-gen console buyers. It's not because they needed the money.

The game could've done with at least another year or 18 months of development; as it currently is, many of its features and systems are actually inferior to older titles' like GTAIV (not 5).

Is the press to blame for hype? I can't blame them as much as Hello Games / CDPR themselves, the dev studios (and their marketing department, obviously) are the ones who chose to advertise their game as something it isn't.

Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran

mlj11

I think Link's Awakening makes a good case for a "Pro" Switch.

At the time of release, I was extremely surprised to see the game chugging with lots of dropped frames in numerous areas... It was quite shocking to see a first party IP with such poor performance even though the game targets only a single platform and device.

I even thought it might herald the arrival of a more powerful Switch, because surely the dev team had been testing on more capable hardware all along, or else there's no way Nintendo would sanction the release of such a poorly performing title from its marquee series?

Re: Capcom Shows Off More Footage Of Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection

mlj11

I understand tastes are subjective, but I don't get how the new art style can be considered cheap or low-effort. The visuals evoke memories of classic storybook illustrations for me, and I think that's exactly the effect the devs were going for. It's not unlike how Yoshi titles try to emulate various craft styles - if anything, they can actually be more labour (and thus cost) intensive than just pixel work.

Re: Sega Asks 650 Employees To 'Voluntarily Retire', Cuts Executive Salaries

mlj11

@AtlanteanMan You're still holding Sega accountable for gambles they took in the console market - an industry with such a high bar to clear that only the biggest mega corporations can survive - more than 20 years ago? C'mon.

Have you considered what they've done more recently? No studio that Sega has invested in has had to sell their IPs or close their doors - that's more than what we can say for a lots of higher profile companies who have utterly ravished marquee developers. Do you not think that's a sign of good responsible management?

Also it's very easy to blame Sega for not updating many of their legacy franchises but have you done any market research into whether they will actually sell today? I'm an 80's kid so I'm no stranger to romanticizing the past, but the tepid consumer response to IP-refreshing projects like Sega Ages despite stellar dev work on it by studios like M2 (which again, is an example of good management) shows that maybe it isn't financially prudent to push out products unless there's a big enough market to sell to.

On the flip side when Sega have updated their franchises, they've worked with good devs to ensure the final product lives up to its legacy; an outstanding example of this is Streets of Rage 4, which was a critical and commercial success. If you took the time to look up what DotEmu, Lizard Cube and Guard Crush say about working with Sega, you'll find it's all positive. In fact with the reputations of everybody involved in SOR4 having been enchanced, I'm cautiously optimistic about some hints DotEmu said about Sega possibly allowing them to work on other classic franchises. As a fan this sounds great to me. As a rational person, this sounds very wise.

Be fair dude.

Re: Sega Asks 650 Employees To 'Voluntarily Retire', Cuts Executive Salaries

mlj11

@LEGEND_MARIOID Your position has "argument from authority" written all over it, but you don't seem to be aware that it is a fallacious form of argumentation. Thing is, my degree or your ownership of a business should have no bearing on who's more correct about the perception of Sega's fortunes.

If someone wants to allege bad management, they should be providing evidence rather than pointing the finger at an easy but unverifiable target as a scapegoat.

Has there been any Jason Schreier-style article exposing poor working conditions at Sega? No. Any medium.com posts by anonymous Sega developers that accuse bosses of being inept or supervisors of being sleazy? No. Any lawsuits by disgruntled ex-Sega employees who were forced out by office politics? No, no, and no.

It's very easy - and extremely in vogue nowadays - to point the finger at bad management when a company is suffering. But where's the proof?

A big part of Sega Sammy's business is the operation of entertainment outlets like arcades and pachinko parlors; they also have a resort management arm - I should not need to tell you that these were all big earners pre-2020. Konami and Disney prove that.

But these are also are business types that have been disastrously impacted by the pandemic. I guess Sega should be thankful they're not big in the F&B industry too, otherwise they might have already declared bankruptcy by now!

So, therefore, unless you have specific proof that Sega is guilty of bad management, I'm going to chalk up their chance in fortunes to bad luck - just like so many other businesses big and small that were doing well before covid-19 but are so unfortunate that a global pandemic has caused their businesses to grind to a halt. And I only need to be a rational, logical person to say that. Not a guy with a finance degree.

Re: Sega Asks 650 Employees To 'Voluntarily Retire', Cuts Executive Salaries

mlj11

@LEGEND_MARIOID To answer your question: I have a degree in finance and also owned my own business before. But that's not really the point of you asking, is it? Could it be that you're displeased that I pointed out an undisputable fact to explain how Sega's misfortune could be due to other factors other than bad business management?

Re: Sega Asks 650 Employees To 'Voluntarily Retire', Cuts Executive Salaries

mlj11

So many companies are facing economic pressure because of the pandemic but apparently there are lots of financial management experts here in these parts who can instantly recognize BaD MaNaGeMeNt.

Gimme a break. Sega manages a lot of public entertainment outlets and machines that have been closed due to covid-19, unlike many other pure videos game dev / publisher studios. That's why they've been harder hit.

Frankly we should all be thankful that they have cultivated and preserved so many of their owned studios and IPs, unlike companies like EA who thrive by destroying the talents they have and bleeding players dry with their micro-transaction saturated "games as service". Really ignorant some of the comments here are.

Re: Control: Ultimate Edition Is Available Now On Switch, But There's A Catch

mlj11

I've just finished my trial of the demo, enhanced graphics version. I only get WiFi in my playing room (i.e. no ethernet) so it wasn't the smoothest experience. There was a bit of ghosting with motion and the graphics weren't even that good, albeit in 1080p as far as I could tell.

Most significantly I think the latency was a bit too high for my liking - the camera still seemed to be panning a couple of split seconds after my thumb had already lifted from the right stick, and the action button took a noticeable while to activate after I started pressing down.

The trial didn't last long enough for me to see any combat but if these few minutes are a good indication of the overall experience then I don't think my setup will allow me to fully enjoy this title.

For reference Google WiFi says I get 91Mbps from my room mesh wifi point; in the demo I got two bars out of four in the signal strength(?) indicator.

Re: Review: Supraland - A Playful Platformer With Squandered Potential

mlj11

I was looking out for this one despite wishlisting it on Steam, because its aesthetic and atmosphere just seems like such a natural fit for the Switch. But this is a curious review; the complaints it makes about design and narrative choices all seem to be tinged with a very narrow-minded, almost spiteful flavour.

Think I'll just ignore those and keep in mind the criticism regarding the controls. Let's see if other reviewers say the same.

Re: Soapbox: Astral Chain Was The Game Nintendo Needed Most In Its 2019 Switch Lineup

mlj11

I rate Astral Chain, but it's a bit short of greatness.

Mechanically it's decent but Plat's games live and die by their combat, and here it may be too complicated for its own good - there are a ton of moves to learn and so many different skills to equip on your Legion, so much so that I doubt I'll ever achieve true mastery of it.

The dodge move lacks sufficient i-frames imho and also takes you too far away in too long a time, often putting you in the way of another enemy attack. This often meant I got the "sloppy strikes" rating through not much fault of my own.

Compounding these is a camera that felt haphazard at times, and can be downright useless when facing flying enemies.

Overall I didn't feel really incentivized to properly learn the combat and was ok with just button mashing to get through a lot of it. If they ever make a sequel I hope they simplify and tighten the combat.
