While Streets Of Rage 4 was curiously absent from Nintendo's recent Indie World Showcase, it has now thankfully been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch by DotEmu. The newly released gameplay trailer above also reveals an intriguing new character named Cherry Hunter who joins Alex and Blaze in smacking down the bad guys.
More from the press release:
Cherry Hunter is the daughter of Adam Hunter from the original Streets of Rage.
Trained by her father and Axel, Cherry learned self-defense from a young age. Her interest in following in her father’s footsteps and becoming a cop soon faded out, replaced by her love of music. Nowadays, she plays with her electro progressive rock band in some of the most dangerous places in Wood Oak City. She may look young but make no mistake - she is a seasoned veteran of kicking ass and taking names.
The new trailer also reveals several more levels in the upcoming game at different times of day: neon lighted urban rooftops, elevator, seedy airport hangars, dirty sewers, thumping music stage and many more are all yours for the taking - lay the smackdown and don’t look back.
Streets of Rage 4 will be the first entry to the core series in 25 years, standing as Axel and Blaze’s glorious return to serving up side-scrolling beatdowns. With lush hand-drawn animations, new combat abilities, and fresh tracks from an amazing team of composers, Streets of Rage 4 will be a masterful tribute to and revitalization of the classic action fans adore.

Nice!
It is looking good !!
Lol anything they can do from making Adam a playable character, lol.
Day one purchase for me!!! 😉👌
Why didn't they announce this during the indie presentation today?
"Elevator"! Or lift. Whichever.
They clearly get it. This game'll be fine.
Fourth character coming based on the shadow on the title screen at the end
Looks fantastic!!
No matter what the haters say, every time they show this game off it looks better and better. Can't wait to buy it on Switch
The visual style in these DotEmu games is legitimately stunning.
Good to have confirmation of a Switch release.
Wow. SoR2 and 3 had Adam's little brother Skate and now we have Adam's daughter. Just can't bring the man back, can we?
Not that I'm complaining. I prefer tough girls, and a black girl at that? I can dig it.
Nice to finally get the (foregone conclusion) Switch confirmation. Running looks like it's going to be a thing too, which is good.
I brake my own rules of offline vacations to post just this:
WHY IS NO ONE MENTIONING SHIVA !?
Hmmm why does Sega not let indie developers use their ips more often if the result is this and sonic mania
@AxeltheCorvikni
SEGA isn't usually considered an indie publisher by Nintendo.
Microsoft? That's another talk.
That name reminds me of the film Redline
@Shiryu Maybe everyone is Team Ash.
Sega is killing it right now. It’s nice to see some of their older IP’s shining again. Now it would be nice to see a Comix Zone Remake, with remastered 2D animation.
It's Cannery from hunter x hunter
@Tasuki Yeah, he was favorite in the original game.
It’s just looks better every time I see it. Good stuff.
Was there a Reggie reference in that character description?
Day one and cherry's my girl!
Ah, the series is going for “woke” 🤣
Been a while since we have had a good brawler. Looks can deceive! I hope it’s fun!
I'm assuming thats the outline of a forth player can be seen on the cover art.
Physical or digital only?
@Tasuki tell me about it, for Streets of Rage 5 they'll have someone else who'll be Adam's father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate 😂
@Mr_Muscle Curious what is "woke" here?
So no more Eddie "Skate" Hunter or Adam Hunter then since we will be getting their cousin/sister Cherry Hunter in there instead. That's okay hopefully Max Thunder is also in the game soon, looking forward to playing this.
@8bitforever I'm assuming them just tossing in a black chic. Not sure why they won't give us Adam.
And there it is finally confirmed for every console. I figured it would be. Day 1.
Come on, Roo. He has to be in there as he's without a doubt the best character of the series.
Woohooo sold!
Dang, Shiva looking RIPPED there.
And if only Shining was one of their "shining" IP revivals, @SpicyBurrito16.
I like Cherry, but the guitar bit is kinda lame. Just carry a lead pipe innit. Or I dunno, a shotgun. Or is that not cool enough.
Great news. We always assumed, but you can never be sure. Now please announce that it's going to be physical and make my Summer.
She is one leapy person for someone with a guitar.
This looks REALLY nice! Like in... really nice! As in... nice! Really!
Gonna enjoy this one, for sure!
Looks promising, exciting stuff right here!👍🏼😃
@Kalmaro Well, they may not be done showing characters and there may also be a story reason, who knows. With that said, a black character isn't "woke", it should just be normal. It's just another character, regardless of skin color or gender. I actually love her design and will probably start with her on my first play through. I am just glad we don't have animals this time.
@8bitforever I see it as woke, then again, woke has no hard definition so it means different things to different people.
For me, being woke is just when you kinda pander to a minority group. That's just me though.
@ImprobableToast That's the first thing I thought too. It would be awesome if she had a pallette swap with green hair and yellow clothes.
@Kalmaro literally every SoR game has had a black character though, so is it really pandering? Black people exist so it's not wrong, weird or 'woke' to put them in a video game or any other product.
Still some goofy looking animation and some odd looking nine work in some of the frames. Some of the villains are poorly drawn and animated. Some sparse level design in places too. I hope they can live up to the standard this franchise deserves.
I wasn't too thrilled with the art style when this was announced(still not a fan). I didn't like some elements of the designs of both Axel and Blaze. Now, I really don't like the design and concept of the new character. The guitar gimmick seems particularly silly and out of place, in my opinion. I don't think this is going to be a game for me.
@sdelfin I agree, the guitar gimmick is generally lame. I know they had the skater kid in one of them but he also was one of the least appealing characters and this is not something to emulate. I could live with he art style if the artist didn't fall back on sloppy gesture like line work and drew each frame and character's face properly.
Still not digging the game's artstyle. New chick looks okay tho.
I'm bummed we can't play as Adam - he was my favorite character in SoR1 because he was Axel's equal in strength while also able to jump as high as Blaze (which came in really handy for some bosses).
Still I'm somewhat consoled by Shiva's appearance because that could mean we may get some secret unlockable characters!
I get why the new art style may not be to everyone's tastes, but really, I think the most important thing is how the gameplay feels.
In this regard I have high hopes given how authentic the remake of Wonder Boy: the Dragon's Trap was to the original.
If SoR4 sells well I'd love for lizardcube and DotEmu to be given the Golden Axe franchise to tackle next!
I never really doubted this was happening (it's such a natural fit on Switch), but I'm still very pleased.
@Dualmask yes and no, yeah, they had a black character but instead of giving us someone we already had, they brought in someone new and didn't give us the original black dude.
Then, to add insult to injury, they made them related.
The pandering I so often these days is just to replace men with women. It's happening a lot in movies. Games, not so much yet.
@Kalmaro I'm not fond of race swapping or gender-swapping either. But this is the pattern for SoR anyway. Only Axel and Blaze have been in every single game so far, so it's not that strange that they're introducing new characters, or that one of them is black. (Although I agree making them related was meaningless.)
Adam being replaced by a family member is pretty on brand for the series. Adam has been an NPC/story element more than he’s been playable. I am actually happy they’re keeping in line with that gag. I would take a tough chick with a guitar over some twerp on rollerblades any. day. of. the. week. I am stoked for this one. Firing up Sengoku 3 and Capcom beat em up bundle tonight to get fired up.
@commentlife I liked Skate, lol. I wasn't that good with him though.
@Dualmask I would have been happier if she wasn't related. Then it would have felt more like an original character.
Too bad, it's one of those "looks like a flashgame on newsground.com" aesthetics!
@commentlife That capcom bundle was a letdown for me. It's basically ONE game, reskinned over and over. And yes, I know this is how things went back in the day, still. Today it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth!
Adam, Skate and Max DLC.
@Kalmaro Personally, he was my least favourite of the series, but I appreciated the zippy/jumpy/agile archetype he filled, mechanically speaking. Cherry seems to be checking a lot of the same boxes. She even does the whole jumping on the shoulders while raining blows down thingy.
@Scollurio I can see how it could come across that way, but I definitely disagree. They’re not all gems, that’s for sure. But, you kind of need to do a deep dive into a guide on the mechanics of some to see where the nuances are. The ACA Neo Geo Sengoku 3 is my personal favourite on the Switch for a Beat Em Up. It’s got great combos and mechanics if you dig into it a little bit, and available for a steal on the system.
@commentlife Jumping on their head and punching people was so much fun.... until I got to the wrestler dude, who didn't like being in one spot too long.
Just shoot it into my veins. I need this.
@Dualmask You're right, "pandering" isn't really the word to use just because they've included a character that's black or female. The term used when including a hip black female teenager rocker who fights with a guitar is "goofy, comic relief throwaway character nobody wanted that's somewhere between Skate and Roo".
@Azathoth How do you know nobody wanted her? Was there a poll? She wouldn't exist if nobody wanted her in the game. It's okay to dislike her--personally I always felt Adam was a boring character, Skate was kind of ridiculous and Dr. Zan was a joke--but none of those characters hindered my enjoyment of Streets of Rage as a whole. Try to see things more objectively. She's just the speedy character in a beat-em-up. It's not that serious.
Sure, I would have personally preferred something a bit more down-to-earth, but someone else will certainly find her fun.
Her being randomly related to Adam is a questionable story element at best, but Streets of Rage has never been entirely realistic, what with the very first game featuring cops firing rocket launchers at the goons.
@mlj11 - I second the desire for Golden Axe! I can just imagine Ax Battler and Tyris Flare right now, actually, riding smoothly-animated dragons and fighting armoured knights.
Really not digging this new character at all. Poor Adam just can't seem to make a comeback. Also where is Shiva?
@MetalKingShield That sounds awesome! Thanks for planting the image in my mind 😄
Isn't a "rocker" character a bit too cliche?
@Scollurio
The funny bit about that is that, despite mostly being horrible, the "classic" beatemup games that predate Final Fight all have extremely distinctive gameplay differences. After 1989, however, yes almost all of them (regardless of developer/publisher) were just the same game until the genre pretty much died out. Guardian Heroes came around with something totally different up it's sleeve, but you have to really like Treasure games and really really like SFII to enjoy it. Literally, Guardian Heroes (subsequently Code of Princess and unrelated but completely inspired: Sacred Citadel), Sengoku 3 and Mother Russia Bleeds are the only 2D beatemups I know of that brought something genuinely new to the table...and Sengoku 3 is only marginally distinct.
@robr My comment was really meant exclusively to cover that capcom collection. I thoroughly enjoyed Mother Russia Bleeds, also Streets of Red was fantastic and looking back I enjoyed Both coop-turtle games on SNES and MEGADRIVE alike. Especially Turtles in Time is a milestone in good old fun. Final fight always felt slow paced and a bit stilted to me, just lately I started playing Streets of Rage games in my MegaDrive Collection thingy on the Switch. While no "barnburner" I enjoy the music and the typical 90's aesthetic. Unfortunately I mostly lack a buddy to play those games coop.
@Scollurio
You are now indoctrinated into my cool club of cool peeps that know Mother Russia Bleeds to be super fantastic. 🙏
"Cherry" Hunter.....okay then. I thought a little too deep there with the name. Oh boy.
@Shiryu If I can't get Adam, then you can't get Shiva. Although that shadowy character reminds me of Zan since it looks robotic...
@Tasuki gotta double the diversity lol surprised she isn't a lesbian
@Kalmaro Adam was so strong though! His stats from the first game were all great, he had a backbreaker throw, His special in SoR Remake was AMAZING! I want him back... I shouldn't have to play the 3ds Remake to play Adam. But yeah Max was ridiculous (highest attack value of any character).
@Reigestugatensho Right? Plus, he was good at swatting people in the air.
@Reigestugatensho ... but Shiva is on the trailer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4th character is already confirmed to be Ash who has a cybernetic arm after losing his own to an industrial lathe accident while high off of poppers.
Cool for those who want it. No thanks because of no Adam. I'll be getting Ninja Warriors only out of the two beat'em ups.
4th character has to be Zan, right? Looks like him.
Where tf is Adam damnit?? Oh well. i loved 1-3. i cant wait for the 4th...its been a long time coming. I hope the 4th mystery fighter is Zan, or maybe thats Adam with cybernetic jax style arms? Axel and Blaze look great as usual. ill probably play through with Axel first as usual. this game looks awesome and im loving the hand drawn animation!!! the art style is great, i dont see what the problem is. and it still feels very much like a SoR game. if only the Battletoads sequel ws coming to the switch that would be perfect. We need more brawlers they need to bring back the genre. how about a new Alien Storm??? Funk yeah.
I am looking forward to it but the art style is leaving me a bit cold for now. Perhaps I will warm up to it. I realize this is still early but the physics look like they are a bit loose as well.
@robr It's an honor!
@Shiryu hold on let me actually watch the trailer before skipping to the comments...!!! Woah you're right what's he doing there?! Now I'm Hyped too! Since he was punched by Cherry I don't think he'll be playable but let's hope he's an integral part of the story. Of Course, if Shiva is here that could only mean Mr.X Somehow escaped death AGAIN. Perhaps we could get Shiva's Sister (I forgot her name)!
@Reigestugatensho SPOILERS I guess, hit up to the 6:16 mark:
@Shiryu So now he has a Stand?
