Indie hit Dead Cells just got even bigger and better thanks to a new, free piece of DLC called 'Rise of the Giant'.
Players who have beaten the main game can now gain access to a new area called the Cavern, an environment "filled with entirely new ways to die". Cheery. You'll come up against abominable new traps, perilous lava pools, plenty of violent new enemies who are all waiting to kill you, and even a new boss.
There's also a new skinning system, which gives players more than 50 new character outfits to enjoy, and new loot will drop via the game’s new Premium Shop. We've got all the details you need down below.
The update brings:
● 10 new enemy types, many of which can be found in the higher difficulty modes of the game
● Three new skills have been included in the game which consist of a flying pet and a single use scroll that will reveal the current level map (ooOOOooOOoooOooo)
● 10 new weapons including the Giant Killer, the Boi Axe and the Thunder Shield
● The old Hunter Grenade door in the Prisoners’ Quarters has been replaced by a new Specialist shop where you can buy the Hunter’s Grenade, skins or a lovely new Map
● For the most advanced players, Rise of the Giant holds a new hidden level. An entirely new ending to your story will be revealed to those who can beat the ---- out of the new boss waiting for you at the end…
The release comes alongside an announcement that the game has now surpassed two million sales worldwide. In celebration, you can now grab Dead Cells from the Nintendo eShop at 20% off for a limited time.
There's never been a better time to jump into Dead Cells. Will you be firing it back up to take a look at the new content, or perhaps you're just about to enjoy it for the first time? Either way, let us know if you're excited for this in the comments.

I am yet to beat the Hand of the King and now this!
@janpampoen Same here. Starting out the game is brutal. Lol. Feels like when I started Gungeon, complete noob who gets killed constantly by the 1st stage enemies. 😆
@janpampoen I beat him, man that was nuts...
I forgot they were even updating this, glad it's free too. Time to re-download the game!
Just Downloaded it an hour ago. And for once i'm glad i have a 70+ game backlog because i've owned this game for over half a year, and now i get play it for the first time with this new DLC.
Downloaded the update earlier. Already trying to juggle like four games at once so not going to worry about going back to it for now but I'd definitely like to at some point. Fun game.
I just bought Wizard of Legend and Dead Cells on sale, and I'm still playing through FFXII, Cuphead, and Celeste. First World problems.
Beat the hand of the king like 6 times, my body is ready!
Don't get me wrong I think this game is a lot of fun. However, I fail to see the longevity. You beat the hand of the king then you start over, then do it again, get more upgrades, then do it again. I fail to see why I care to do the same thing over and over like a simple mobile game.
@Panopticon @BenAV I felt this to my core. 😆 I’m juggling Hellblade, Shalnor, Dead Cells, MHGU, MK11, and Shakedown currently.
@Chunkboi79 It’s because of that cycle actually. People dig the grind of unlocking all the loot, and then seeing what said loot has to offer. Isaac and Gungeon are the same. Isaac actually gets much easier the more you unlock. Gungeon remains the same, but some of the guns can be near game breaking - like the Stinger... melts bosses quick.
@Dm9982 Fair enough, I can understand that. I feel that way about monster hunter but in monster hunter there was always a bigger and badder monster for me to tackle. Gave me the incentive to get stronger. I just wish this game had multiple final bosses instead of the same one over and over.
@Chunkboi79 Also to be fair you are encouraged to up the difficulty and beat the game again to keep unlocking the higher difficulties. Also, without giving spoilers, there is a "true final boss" on the highest difficulty.
@ImmortanJho Ahhh, I thought the difficulty went up on it's own lol. Then it might be time to give it another go.
Love this game, starting in a New difficultly is a real challenge. I will have to stop grinding in mk11 and start grinding en dead cells.
@ImmortanJho Also getting to the end faster unlocks hidden areas after the hand battle.
@Chunkboi79 Ah another MH fan! If you haven’t already, I’d suggest Isaac, Gungeon, and Diablo 3. All those offer that same sense of accomplishment / reward for progression. Warning, Binding of Isaac is uber dark/mature. Hella good thou. Gungeon isn’t dark, a lot more actiony thanks to the dodge roll mechanic - in that regard it’s basically top down/Zelda view MH. Diablo is Diablo. Progression is largely the same as MH, go harder difficulty for better gear and keep pushing the grind.
@Chunkboi79 Perhaps it´s because you´re good and a lot of people like are not? xD Im around 20 hours in the game and still haven´t seen the final boss...I feel a lot of longevity in the game because of this!
@Chunkboi79
Yeah there is a long horizontal glass in the middle to acivate at the prisoners quarters in which you can add a "Boss Cell" to change the difficulty, it is not done in any of the menus but "In game". In order to unlock the following difficulty, you have to beat it with the boss cell activated for that particular run.
@B-Locks I probably would have never figured this out.... 😆
@Dm9982 word up, I've played enter the gungeon and that's pretty dope. Always wanted to get into diablo for the ps4 but then it came to the switch and now I am waiting for a sale. But thanks for the recommendations! I loved mhw kinda fell off once I beat behemoth and tried generations ultimate and TBH I'm not a huge fan of it compared to world but I'm forcing myself to like it in hopes I eventually will. Trying dauntless tonight tho! Hopefully that ties me over until iceborne! I also heard a leak/rumor about a brand new switch monster hunter for e3. Not getting my hopes up but it would makes sense to have a new one by now
@B-Locks I would have never known, thanks dude!
@Chunkboi79 how far are you into Generations? It’s probably the longest MH game I’ve played thus far, and Low Rank takes forever to finish it feels like, then high rank is long too. Thankfully G Rank is straight and to the point. The problem lies in the fact that G Rank was added later on XX/GU, so they had originally planned for it to end at HR.... so you’re playing a whole game, plus expansion. Once you get into End High Rank / G Rank it gets a lot better. If you need help I can help plow through the key quests with ya. HR 334 here
Even with the sale price and the added content I still think this game is not worth it. Same thing over and over and over is just to meehhhh.
I think Dead Cells is a pretty good game, but I don`t see a reason to play it again seeing as I already beat it.
The trailer was fun. Dead Cells is on my wishlist for now, too many other games to pay.
I need to play this more the game is a hella grind tho you have to stay committed
"Boi Axe" sounds like an innuendo. lol
@Heavyarms55 Gentleman’s Sword in the next update. 😆
Lord I apologize. Imgur memes have ruined me
If only there's a new game plus where it won't feel the same every time then maybe I'll keep playing but this is a nice freebie.
I'm really looking forward to Hollow Knight 2: Silksong, might actually give this game a go before then though.
Just as a quick notice: the DLC is free everywhere except Japan. Here isn't free...
Some commentors here may not have realized that Rise of the Giant actually adds a new final "true" boss.
@Dm9982 I'm honestly only like three hours in and completed like two missions. I haven't gotten far, I can't say I know the terrain much yet so I am just getting familiar. I will hit you up tho if I run into any trouble!
@Chunkboi79 Ok, FC is SW-5558-6500-8995. Just message on here if ya need help or just wanna rush through some stuff.
Also know that on MHGU, the top tier weapons are Long Sword and Heavy Bowgun. They own the fastest kill times, and for good reason. Both are very very powerful in this version. HBG because Valor allows for a Gatling gun crouching Fire. And LS due to great skills and motion value. Critical Juncture can one shot most tails right off, has, I believe, 180 MV which is nuts. And also because Adept or Valor LS have insane counter attacks. Adept dodge into counter hits really hard. But Valor has a parry attack from Spirit combo. Either first swing or draw into spirit will produce a small window of invincibility, and if hit during that frame you’ll auto counter into a highly damaging attack.
