The long-awaited graphics and performance update for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is now available on the Nintendo Switch. In version 1.03 there are four major areas of improvement: input lag, visual quality, crashes and load times.
According to 505, input lag has been "eliminated" throughout the game, controls are more responsive – with enemies easier to fight and environments now less of a hassle to navigate. This will be further optimised in update 1.04.
The visual quality now looks "more clear" and should also be more detailed. Below are some examples and above is a trailer.
The stability of the game has also been improved, and a number of "specific situations" have been addressed, which were causing crashes – most commonly when reading books from shelves.
Last but not least, are the significantly reduced load times, "by up to 70%". More improvements will be added in version 1.04.

Anyone test it yet? I've been waiting for this update for a while before I buy it.
Game's back on my radar now. Better late than never I suppose.
Yessss I’ve been waiting for this, though now that I’ve waited this long perhaps I’ll wait a bit longer for v 1.04 for the extra tight experience;)
I finally bought a used copy for fairly cheap a week or so ago, so this is great timing! I wish they would add a 60fps mode, but I know it's very unlikely. I can just play it docked where my TV boosts the images to 60fps with some elements still showing slight judder. It looks pretty nice that way, and only uses a few watts of electricity. But I'm looking forward to seeing how short the load times are and how sharp it looks with 1.03
I already beat it within the week it came out. But I’ll do it again since I did enjoy it.
I’m glad I played it at launch. I think I noticed in some early patch notes, they nerfed my favorite secondary weapon.
@Northwind Thanks. I'm still on the fence about it since I hate buying games that need substantial patches, but I really do want to play it.
The game looked and played fine at launch. If they tweaked it, great, but I didn't have any problem with the game aside from it occasionally crashing when I would enter the shop.
But that wasn't a problem because I would just save first.
The flying sword was by far my fav, and they decided to weaken it a while back, sadly.
And I will continue to wait to play this for 1.04. Got it through Kickstarter, so I'll play it sooner or later.
Definitely was quite a few bugs and slow downs and loading issues when I played it, I still need to go back to work on finishing it up. I was primarily playing on vacation handheld though. It will be interesting to see how much better it is when I get around to finishing the last 20% of the game. The screenshots don't make the graphics changes look like much though, but i think most just mainly really want the fixes to gameplay more than anything.
Great, will do the update after work.
Funny how the worst version sold the most copies
Great! Will now buy.
all im going to say is that iga needs to find someone else to do the future sequels for switch cause 505 shown they didnt care about it by releasing it broken and glitchy and wasted a delay for nothing plus we shouldnt have to wait for patches to fix the game wen it should of been polished up before the release date.
I put about 40 hours in since launch and loved it despite the flaws (stopped near the end of the game once I heard the patches were coming so I could finish it with the improvements). Now that I've played with the patch, I can say that the input lag and load times were drastically improved (I didn't mind the lag as much before since I got used to it but I can really notice the difference and can't go back). Graphics are a bit sharper but nothing major as I assume that will be a bigger focus on the next patch. Overall, I would recommend to those on the fence as the game feels much better now.
Looking forward to patch 1.04 as well. Seeing as the patches are largely Wayforwards work, you can see the difference since they know the Switch hardware better (shame they couldn't have been on board for the Switch version since the beginning). Maybe IGA can contract them for the sequel since they are much better developers overall.
I beat it twice right after it was first released. Didn't find the issues to be nearly as bad as the complaints made them out to be. The game wasn't perfect, for sure, but wasn't nearly as bad as the negative talks about it said. Input lag seemed unnoticeable to me. I never had any game crashes. There were a couple of 'slow down' areas, but it was mainly in specific spots. That said, this new patch should help smooth things out for the better. I plan on starting a 3rd game and playing it all over again to 100% completion to try it out. I look forward to the improvements. However, again, in my experience playing the game twice to 100% completion both times, when it first launched on Switch, I didn't find it nearly as bad as the complaints said. Definitely worth buying and playing. i had fun with it. I'll get back to playing this again, after I beat Luigi's Mansion 3, which I'm in the middle of right now.
Fantastic. I'll wait till 1.04 tho, before I dive back in. Didn't have much issue with the game on release, but shelved it after 4hrs, once I tried the PC version. Could not go back after that. Nice to be able to play this the way I wanted to now tho.
Input lag has been eliminated, and will be further optimized in 1.04. So will it begin to predict your commands?
I stopped playing at 45%. A very nice Halloween treat. Time to re-enter the nightmare.
@Bliquid I agree with you. That video was very unprofessional. Luckily for the people who bought this port it turned out to be the best selling version, who knows what they would've done if it didn't sell well.
This whole fiasco with this port left a sour taste in my mouth. Makes me going to think twice when i'm considering buying games from Iga and his team.
@60frames-please
Isn't your frame interpolation causing huge input lag? It usually is. You will mainly notice that with games where timing is key.
It’s a shame they didn’t address this up front, ah well I may get it now
Best to wait for the inevitable comparison videos from intrepid YouTubers.
Been waiting for this, but with Luigi out (still havent got it though, Go Nintendo UK Store!) it will be pushed back until later.
And to be honest I dont see the difference between the two screenshots.
Neato. I buckled down with the PC version instead, but if they keep improving on this version, its portability might make it my prefered way to play it in time. All the same, it's nice to see that the devs are sticking to their word of fixing the port the mainstream has already written off as an unsalvageable failure.
Too bad for physical owners. This should've been in the cart at the start.
Good to hear that. Sad, that they had to rush the release and couldn't wait, until it was ready. I finished the game a long time ago and don't though I enjoyed it, I won't play it again in the near future. So many games, so little time....
Already finished twice. Might try on later date. There are still too many backlog for me to go thru. A bit reluctant to go back in again.
@PiXeLSteF Not a huge problem. I don't notice it in Breath of the Wild. It screws up racing games though-- they have to run at 60fps, basically.
Too late. Already on PC Game Pass. Runs/Looks really well on my PC.
I'll have Luigi mansion 3 for the commute. Ended well anyway.
Well, that certainly took a while, despite them making it such a priority. From the updates, it sounds like they had to do some deep optimizations, section by section. It might have been nice if they treated the Switch version as more than an afterthought before release. Instead, they lied to their customers(overheating!!) and delayed the Switch version so that people would be distracted by the positive reviews of the other versions, because they knew the Switch version wasn't so good and was inconsistent(crashes for many, not for others). And the development process was rocky long before that. I'm still salty about the Linux cancellation. It was a day-one promise(no stretch-goal nonsense) and it took them three-and-a-half years to figure out that they didn't know what they were doing. It might have been nice to offer refunds. Luckily, I got my money back out.
What do I think of the latest update? More like, What do you think of the latest update NL? I haven’t picked this up specifically because of what you guys (& other media outlets) thought of this game at launch.
I’m waiting to hear to hear from you now that the patch is in. Will the review get an update?
Hoping this fixes things. I had big hopes for this when it first got announced.
