1.Super Mario World 2.Super Mario Galaxy 3.Super Mario Odyssey 4.Super Mario Bros 5.Super Mario 64
Top 5 chosen as a mixture for impact at the time and how fun it still is to this day to play. If Bowser’s Fury was a full length game, it might’ve made the list too.
I’m sure there are some PlayStation and XBox owners who are into the Contra series, but honestly, the audience for a classic run and gun 2D series with routes in the 80s and 90s are playing on Switch. Konami (Wayforward) should have catered to the Nintendo audience and their sales will probably suffer for their misstep. I still preordered on Switch but I may wait to see if a patch is incoming before I jump in. Not like I don’t have a huge backlog on my system of choice!
Hopefully there will be a patch or two in its future. At least, it pretty much looks identical across all versions. I’d say the demo was fine other than three or four stutters, but then I grew up in the NES/SNES era when low FPS and flicker and occasional stutters were not uncommon.
I’d love to see a remake of Crimson Skies from the first XBox console. Other than that, I would probably sell my Series X if a port of Forza Horizon 5 came to Switch 2.
It seems to be fashionable to hate on the new Mario vs DK for Switch, but no way is it a worse game than all of the Mario vs DK games that followed it (the minis games). And Barrel Blast and DK 64 should be a little higher on the list as well.
Sounds like their super easy super short demo didn’t do this game any favors judging by the comments. It gets way more challenging and way more fun though. I loved the GBA original and I’m looking forward to this on Friday.
I didn’t see Sonic CD on this list, unless I just overlooked it. I think Sonic Lost World is ranked too low and is a very good Sonic game, but also a Wii U exclusive that nobody played. I’ll be curious to see how Sonic X Shadow Generations scores in the future.
I bought this game the day it came out but didn’t play it until mid June on vacation. I avoided spoilers and the overall chatter, and played it my own pace in my own way over the course of 4 months. You will get more out of your games by not succumbing to FOMO or the silly need of playing it at the exact same time it drops and when everyone else does. That’s not the best way to experience anything honestly.
Probably a tie between Metroid Prime 1 being shadow dropped and feeling the afterglow of completing TOTK and watching all of the Tears scenes in order and realizing that it was my favorite Switch gaming experience since Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
@Mr_Zurkon you may be right. I still haven’t tried the 3DS version as I generally didn’t play much DS/3DS. I had heard they made some improvements in areas like the Water temple. If they brought that game up to 1080p I’d probably eat it up.
I think Zelda 2 and Ocarina of Time are the games that could most benefit from a modern remake. From updating the visuals, to refining the control and feel, and tightening up the more frustrating parts with the benefit of years of game development experience.
Sonic 2 is probably the best overall Sonic game in my view. The levels are perfect, very little jank. That said, Sega would have my wallet with a Sonic 2.5 that includes the base game with 3 of these added zones here (we probably don’t need a second desert zone).
@Vexx234 my apologies if my comments appeared to put down different age groups or ADHD or what have you. I could use different language to express my opinions sometimes. I recognize that there are flaws in the Mario movie, but perhaps due to my longtime fandom and wanting a show or movie to do Mario some justice since the first time I played Super Mario Bros in ‘87, when I watched the film I had an emotional response. I actually teared up watching it which may seem silly, but I think the fan service and love for the franchise as well as the visuals (which I found beautiful) and humor combined to make it a special experience for me. I wish I felt that way with Spiderverse, as I am a fan of the live action Spiderman films. Have a good night.
I’m not a movie reviewer and I’m not entitled to write out a breakdown of why I didn’t like Spiderverse. I don’t like the animation style as I simply find it too busy, and I don’t care for the whole multiverse concept. I’m not putting the film’s achievements down, I just don’t care for it. And frankly, I’m not doing anything anyone else doesn’t do when they defend their tastes. People crap all over the Mario movie all the time whenever Spiderverse is brought up and if you’re truly objective about art, then you should recognize there are no absolutes.
I don’t go to a Mario movie for character development. Has there ever been character development in the history of Mario? It’s a cartoon designed for kids and their nostalgic parents. The story is appropriate for the audience. Plots don’t have to be convoluted.
A lot of people can’t handle a different opinion. I’m not a big movie buff or student of animation techniques. Just an average guy with personal likes and dislikes. The Mario movie made more money for a reason. It appeals to a wider audience. Not everything has to be a pseudo intellectual art house film for it to be considered good. The Mario movie was exactly what it needed to be. A fun movie that’s easy to look at that can be enjoyed by a wide audience.
@Workcomesfirst agree to disagree. Both movies had their good points. You just prefer one to the other. I think the Mario movie appeals to an older generation/fan (like me) and Spiderverse screams millennial/Gen Z. But that’s just how I see it.
@Quiet2down different strokes I guess. I felt like a passerby watching Spiderverse because it refuses to sit still for more than a couple seconds. Its hyper Ritalin induced style was a barrier to me having any emotional connection with the characters.
I bet there may yet be an actual physical for this and it will be helmed by Limited Run. So you can look forward to getting it months after the digital release….
Part of me wants Mario Wonder to win because I’m tired of people assuming the only games that could possibly deserve GOTY are massive AAA open world RPGs. 2D platformers get such a bad rap, but they were the foundation of so much of modern gaming and to get one that still pushes the genre forward should be celebrated.
TOTK gets my vote though, and I personally hope it crushes BG3.
I will also state that I have zero interest or love for Baldur’s Gate 3 or last year’s favorite, Elden Ring. I find the direction of the Zelda series as of late to be way more accessible and fun for the average person than the typical GOTY contenders.
For me, it was my GOTY and was the only game I played for 4 months! I put about 265 hours into it- uncovering all the tears, all the shrines and all light routes in the underground. Visited every island in the sky, beating every enemy type in the game (those 3 headed gleeoks make Lynels feel like stomping a goomba!), and completed about 75% of the side quests and side adventures. I thought the story was fantastic in TOTK and loved the characters- particularly Sonia and Zelda. I’ve enjoyed many Zelda games over the years, but there are a handful I couldn’t get into (Skyward Sword and Majora’s Mask come to mind) but BOTW was my turning point into making me a Zelda diehard and lead me to trying every console game in the series I missed. BOTW is still my favorite (and favorite Switch game overall) but TOTK is just even more to love and because it has been 4 or 5 years since I played BOTW I didn’t feel any sameness and it felt fresh enough for me.
Different strokes, I guess. Personally, I think the Europe one looks terrible, especially Wily in the background. I couldn’t decide between NA and Japan. I’m sure my nostalgia and love for the series makes me think my NA box art is good.

Re: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Devs Promise New Content & Free Updates In The Future
@Glasso maybe Penny’s Big Breakaway can challenge it.
Either way, it makes the demo for the new Contra game seem pretty disappointing by comparison. From what I hear, at least. Still haven’t tried it yet.
Re: Random: Some Rare Fans Are Upset About The Latest Switch Online Announcement
I have better ways of playing all my retro games in one place at this point, but it would be nice to see Diddy Kong Racing get a port to NSO.

They have earned my money for this one. Ubisoft has done solid work for the Switch.

@Workcomesfirst Her back story is right there in the movie. You can choose to ignore it if you want.
Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Lands Three Nominations At The Golden Globes 2024
@Workcomesfirst which is arguably an improvement on the blank slate you get in the games
Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Lands Three Nominations At The Golden Globes 2024
@Workcomesfirst I would argue their portrayal of Princess Peach at least showed development and thought.
