Re: Ubisoft Game Rating In Taiwan May Have Revealed God & Monsters' New Name

mateq

@RazumikhinPG On case with Nintendo Switch release - isn't that exactly the same situation as with this game right now?

Announced a year ago at E3, first trailer and promotional material would appear now and 4 months before the year end to release the game. Sounds like your description of how Switch was released.

But hey, it doesn't really matter. I guess my point is that there is a chance the game will be released this year, hence my arguments. But in general I agree with you that most probably it will be postponed to Q1 2021. Not that I really care about this game in the first place, just bored at work

Re: Ubisoft Game Rating In Taiwan May Have Revealed God & Monsters' New Name

mateq

@RazumikhinPG What about new Paper Mario game? It was released just a month after the announcement and it can be considered a big Nintendo game, with Mario in the title.

I believe there are plenty other examples of Nintendo dropping new big game without much promotional materials beforehand, so sure - Ubisoft could probably manage that as well

Re: EA Has More Than 1,000 Employees And "Dozens Of Studios" Working On A Cloud-Based Future

mateq

Woah, the amount of luddites on this site is ridiculous. Cloud gaming is the future whether you like it or not - and all of us, the gamers, can and will benefit from it.

I agree currently the technology is lacking with massive input lag even with high speed broadband, but currently is not in 2 years, and A LOT can happen in 2 years when it comes to advancements of technology. Thus, I'm super happy companies are investing in this technology and looking into how to make it more efficient.

Just imagine playing high-end triple AAA game with great graphics on a portable device? Having VR content streamed directly to your device without the need to have super expensive stuff packed in your computer? Not needing to upgrade your PC/console every couple of years?

Honestly, with cloud gaming possibilities are endless, it's literally crazy sad most of you guys are stuck in the past and can't see it...

EDIT: Not to mention the environmental effects! Printing all your boxes and artworks, producing cartridges and CDs or even manufacturing consoles - all of that is using the resources that could be avoided being wasted with cloud gaming.

Re: Deals: Amazon Prime Day Is Happening Now In The US, More Nintendo Switch Bargains On The Way?

mateq

@SuperWeird Apparently base pay for entry level fulfillment center workers in Spain is about $23,000 a year, but of course, communist party is not happy. Bezos works double the amount of an average worker at Amazon's warehouse, but somehow noone sees it... Also this:

Amazon’s total compensation in Madrid is in the high range of the logistics sector and consists of base pay and an extensive benefits package: private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance, employee discount and a Career Choice program that provides employees funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95 percent of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognized courses, over four years.

Good reason for introducing more robots at the warehouses, at least they don't go on strike. So no, don't boycott Amazon, it's a silly thing to do. If workers don't like their job so much, just leave and find something else.

Re: Rumour: Google Is Creating A Gaming Platform To Rival Switch, PS4 and Xbox

mateq

Super excited for this, looking forward to see what Google brings to the industry - it has potential to create something big. I'm especially excited with the possibility of online streaming, you could basically run high-end games without buying new hardware ever again, which is great to consumers. Sad many people are acting Luddite-ish complaining about the exciting future and all the possibilities streaming could bring to everyday folks

Re: Ubisoft CEO Believes The Next Generation Of Consoles Will Be The Last

mateq

Interesting to see so many negative comments here! I, for one, love the idea of streaming games and with bandwidth getting faster and faster it would be perfect solution to play games - be it on the go or at home. We also see more experimentation with game-streaming services. These factors contribute to making streaming a more plausible scenario for gaming industry than in was the past, as some of you have commented before.

Small, indie game companies could easily host their game on a server provided by bigger companies (steam?). Not to mention that it would open a door for customers to subscribe to their favourite game developer/publisher to access all their favourite titles. + streaming services would be cheaper in the next 6-7 years, after the new gen, making it affordable for most.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Need A Switch Online Sub For Core Gameplay Features

mateq

This is possibly the most misleading and click-baity title you've come up with.... Online battling and trading are not core gameplay features. Based on your title I assumed one wouldn't be able to complete the main story-line or catch pokemons without the subscription, which obviously is not the case here. Fix it?

It's safe to assume that Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Splatoon all will require online subscription to access online features, so why not Pokemon GO as well?

Re: Random: Nintendo Fixed One Man's Out Of Warranty, First-Gen 3DS For Next To Nothing

mateq

@Nintendoforlife so you counter my negative experience with a vague comment, implying that somehow I am entirely incorrect?

Someone had a great customer service from Nintendo, that's fantastic. I wish I was that lucky and had a similar experience. Unfortunately it never happened to me, and all my encounters with Nintendo customer service have been rather unpleasant, so obviously my comment in this regard will be negative. I've never said the article is entirely incorrect, I've just stated my opinion that Nintendo is not all rainbow and unicorns and, at least for me and based on my experience, behind cute and great games lies a money-sucking corporation that doesn't care at all about their customer. I'll still buy their systems and games, but they would have to work much harder to change my mind about the company itself.

Re: Random: Nintendo Fixed One Man's Out Of Warranty, First-Gen 3DS For Next To Nothing

mateq

"It was out of warranty, but this is Nintendo, so it was worth a shot.", such a wrong statement. My Wii U's gamepad broke down after around 5 months of usage (it literally stopped charging on it's own - from one day to another), so it was still on warranty. I've sent the console to Nintendo to have it fixed, but got asked to pay over £100 for repairs, which was a ridiculous amount, considering I could buy a whole new console for double that. According to Nintendo it was my fault the gamepad broke down, but like I said it just suddenly stopped charging, I don't see how I could have broken it... Send it back to Amazon instead who gave me a full refund and bought a PS4 from them - no regrets

As much as I love playing Nintendo games, the company itself is rather horrible - they just don't care about their customers.

Re: Weirdness: We've Been Sent a Ludicrously Big Box to Open

mateq

Isn't that a future version of Lady with an Ermine (like 200 years later or so)?

@impurekind you are right, it must have costed quite a sum to paint that, not to mention the frame and the transportation fee. Maybe better marketing would be to make it an open competition with like/share on facebook, so the game could get plenty of spotlight due to an uncommon prize, rather than send it to NintendoLife, especially since Alex clearly has no idea what to do with it

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Life's Favourite Games From Switch's First Year

mateq

DOOM! But also Crypt of a Necrodancer. Been wanting to try this game ever since I've heard about it, and soon after I've learnt it would be coming to Switch... been a long wait but well worth it!

Kinda happy not to see Zelda on a list. It's been a good game, but FAR from a masterpiece people call it - except for the exploration part everything else was below average, including side quests, combat and main plot.
But, I'm honestly surprised Odyssey isn't on a list. It's a lovely addition to Mario franchise, possibly one of the best actually!

Re: Feature: These Five Switch Accessories Are Too Stupid to be True

mateq

Back to the main (article) topic, I think the dust cover is perfect. I always cover my docked Switch with a towel when I'm not using it to protect it from dust or any other potential liquid spills or whatever. The dust cover is obviously not meant to be used when you actually use the console, but I believe that's a given!
So the article title is a bit too much - some of those are definitely NOT too stupid

Re: Nintendo Download: 1st February (North America)

mateq

Yes, finally Crypt of the Necrodance! Been interested in this game for a while, but wanted to wait for Switch edition. It was supposed to be released last year and I've been checking the new release date ever since... Now it caught me by surprise! Hopefully the wait is worth it

Re: Random: Mother Orders Nintendo Switch From Amazon, Gets Box Of Washing Powder Instead

mateq

@NintenNinja16 I'm pretty sure Amazon would honor the deal if the Switch was in stock, which isn't the case - the only thing they can do right now is refund, or ask the customer to wait for new stock.

Amazon is amazing when it comes to customer service - I only had good experience with all my purchases/refunds/replacements (unlike Nintendo UK, which as A LOT to learn...)

Re: Nintendo Reveals the Ages of Pearl and Marina

mateq

I'm honestly concerned by their height, surprised noone has mentioned it here... So, if Pearl is 33cm shorter, then the illustrator (or character designer?) did a horrible job at showing that, as they seem to be almost equal height in game and every single artwork

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@ThanosReXXX I agree, civil discussions are the best, especially when you can hear some valid arguments

Actually, I may be younger but I love retro gaming and I did play most of the popular games from NES/SNES era. I'm a huge fan of pixel graphics I do appreciate what those games did for the whole industry. You were right though saying that I have no interest in NES or SNES mini. I'd rather download the games on virtual console and play those of Switch (hopefully, sooner than later). Moreover, I don't see much point in replaying certain games. There are so many quality games to play it would be a waste of time to go through the same thing again. So those mini consoles with pre-loaded number of games without any option to purchase more are not for me. I believe Skyrim was the only game I've ever returned to and finished twice. ..
But I'm sure both NES and SNES mini must be tempting from a nostalgic point of view!

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@ThanosReXXX Once again, you make a lot of valid points and I tend to agree that some people might be concerned about the game availability in the next couple of years after the servers are dead.

However, we do have slightly different opinions on that topic itself, which I suppose is the cause of our little exchange of arguments. As far as I am concerned, I wouldn't really care about any particular software in the next 10 years. There will be better consoles and much better games which I would want to play and experience, rather than plugging in my ancient hardware and outdated games. All my gameboys were just collecting dust until I've decided to sell them and I don't regret that decision as I've never felt like going back to any of those when I bought 3ds. I've never considered turning on my 3ds ever since I've bought Switch.

Thus, I don't mind if the company at some point in the far future stops supporting the servers and I'm not able to play the old games because they require downloads. Because of that, I don't mind if the cartridges are not self-contained, but I do mind the very tiny 32gb on-board memory for games, updates and DLCs on my Switch.

Anyway, people are different and I suppose it's hard to satisfy everyone. Perhaps you are more of a collector and I'm just a player. Or perhaps we have different opinion on the topic because of the age difference between us (been gaming only since mid-90s). I'm sure there will be different industry-standard practices in the next 20 years with which I wouldn't agree

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@ThanosReXXX I don't think we should compare 3ds cartridges with Switch ones. It's not really a 'current trend' if you consider that 3ds games are much less demanding and the console was always advertise as handheld only, meaning no demanding games, which are usually way less than 4gb.

Even if the content of the cartridge is industry-standard, publishers still need to pay Nintendo to use the proprietor part of the cartridge, otherwise it wouldn't fit into the console. I have no idea how this deal works, I'm just speculating and providing some counter-arguments, which potentially could affect the inflated price we're paying for every Switch game. If you have any hard-proof I'd be more than happy to read it.

On the price difference - no, it doesn't make sense. Publishers have exactly the same costs associated with PS4 and XBox versions of the game (what you mentioned: packaging, marketing, retailer's cut, VAT etc). So why are we paying £10 more for physical releases of games like Axiom Verge or L.A. Noire (especially the latter, considering they went with a cheaper version of the cartridge. EDIT: on the 2nd thought, I'm sure Axiom Verge fits the 2gb cartridge, which is supposed to be cheap, so it fits the argument)?

I mentioned the Switch branded SD cards more as an interesting fact. I agree, I doubt those cards make Nintendo any considerable profit

Lastly, downloadable content is usually accessible as long as you have a physical copy of the game. Resident Evil Collection is the only exception which I'm aware of where you get a downloadable voucher instead for the 2nd game. No other game locks the content to the user's account/console, so the resale value is there and will be there for almost every single game.

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@ThanosReXXX That was indeed a massive wall of text
You do make a lot of interesting points and I tend to mostly agree with what you said. I suppose the difference between us is that I don't really see the cartridges as self-contained, but rather as an alternative to a disk (I suppose that's how the cartridges were described in the past, but in digitalized world I tend to think both formats are more or less the same)

Like you said, we don't know much about the cost of cartridges. Your calculations might be right, but if that was the case, and the cartridge was only 60% pricier it wouldn't make sense for developers to price the Switch game at £10 more than other versions. It should be +£2-3 maximum.

Quick google search told me that the cartridges are proprietary, which definitely increases the price of manufacturing and distribution for 3rd parties. Possibly letting publishers develop their own game carts could fix at least half of the problem?

"both parties literally don't have anything to gain from gamers having to buy extra SD cards" - interesting you've said that! I'd assume so as well, but there are a bunch of SD cards branded with Switch logo, so I suppose Nintendo did find a way to make money out of those!

"We can't resell digital data" - you are right here. I though the 2nd game comes in the form of an update, rather than downloadable voucher. I was wrong. Nevertheless, games like NBA2k17 or LA Noire both require huge download and have a resale value. Thus, with Resident Evil being an exception I don't see the problem here.

@GC-161 You are the one who has a lot to learn, son. Sony was selling their PS4 at loss at launch and their recent financial quarter exceeded every investors and analysts' expectations, solely due to their console and gaming divisions of the business. It's the software and various online subscriptions that makes money, not hardware. So, for each ~$30 loss on Switch, Nintendo potentially could have sold 100+ more Marios and Zeldas.

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@GC-161 That's the most ridiculous argument you could have made. First of all, Apple prices are super inflated. Look at other phones with 128gb memory storage and compare the prices - you can get those from $200 up (possibly cheaper). If Nintendo wasn't so proud and could swallow the loss on each console (like Sony or Microsoft), they could have easily provide us with more onboard memory.

Secondly, even though it is a handheld, it's still a gaming console which is supposed to play all modern games (that's what Nintendo wants, at least). And as for modern games 32gb won't even hold a single one... Not to mention Nintendo advertises it as home console first, portable second.

Re: Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)

mateq

For all of you who have never played Skyrim, you are in for a treat! Honestly, it's probably the best game available on Switch right now (yes, I've said it!). Massive amount of content, complete freedom, meaningful and interesting side quests (I'm looking at you, Zelda), engaging story and colourful world.
Damn, was not planning to lose myself in that game again, but after writing all of that I might even grab it myself once again

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

@gcunit True, people like used market, but they also like to own physical copies of the games because they are collectors. Once you enter a cartridge, update/patch the game, you still have the physical game, right? And let's be honest, in 98% of cases once you delete the downloaded file you probably will never play the game again and sell the game later (or let it collect dust on a shelf looking nice), so what's the deal?

@kobashi100 What I meant by blaming Nintendo, is that people wouldn't complain about massive downloads if the console had at least 128/256gb of memory.

I love physical copies of the games as well. In fact, I have most of my games in boxes, they just look cool. But I don't mind downloading a chunk of data to play them. It's normal on every single gaming platform, except for Switch players it appears. Thus the reason why I mind a tiny memory on Switch...

Re: Video: Check Out Resident Evil Revelations Collection's Motion Controls And amiibo Support

mateq

Why are people even angry about downloading a massive chunks of data for the modern game? It's a common practice across all the consoles and PC. PS4 disks also cannot hold the whole game and often you are forced to download 50gb+ file.

It's fully Nintendo's fault for giving as a console with 32gb onboard memory, which is laughable. So, don't blame developers for saving money for cheaper cartridges, blame Nintendo instead for not being fully prepared for that!

Re: Destiny And Titanfall Artist Is Bringing The Pixar-like Sleep Tight To Switch

mateq

@Anti-Matter In that case, don't be surprised if your kids become way more violent than any their peers who actually play shooting games... It's cool that you don't like games with guns or violence, but forbidding (in video-games situation at least) is not a solution, but on a contrary, it's a massive step for causing more problems.
