Re: Talking Point: Why Did Nintendo Give Up On Its 'Classic Edition' Concept So Soon?

I wonder if they're actually more sensitive about their legacy content than we realize. Like they are very anxious about how much the existence of how an ever-growing back catalogue of fondly remembered games undermines their upcoming releases.

Legacy content lets us see all the stuff that hasn't really evolved, or has gone backwards, or has been entirely neglected and ultimately it robs player hours from new £50 products. It makes sense that they want to try to control it to a certain extent.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Miss Instruction Manuals?

Not to reveal myself as completely tedious, but I think I write professionally because I loved a good game manual back in the day. If I couldn't be a magazine journo, I really wanted to be the one to describe the game world and the mechanics to people. A complete trajectory for obsolescence.

Enough of an enviro-bore to say it's probably better for them to be a thing of the past (don't hit me, but I'm ready for boxes to go away too) and acknowledge that games are just generally better at explaining themselves these days. Give me a nice hardback full of development art and discussion instead.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

It was solid, but the world situation really makes waiting for things hitting even as soon as the summer seem too far off to really energize me. And I can only assume that anything coming in the far flung space year of 2022 will arrive in pill form.

Can't really get excited about Skyward Sword HD, even if it's the only 3D Zelda I haven't played at this point and I'm sure it's a fine game. If they were dropping it next month? Maybe. But it's a long time to wait to find out whether we should have all just played the Wii version.

This is probably the only top 10 I actually own boxed and have played extensively. Objectively one of Nintendo's worst consoles, and probably the one I love the most.

Re: "Nintendo Isn't That Smart": Pachter Says Nintendo Should Scrap Switch And 'Only Have Switch Lite'

kupocake

It's impressive how poorly thought through this is. Even if it was true that the audience plays exclusively in either mode, having the ability to develop games for two distinct audiences with a single SKU makes a tonne of business-sense.

If his premise was "most people play on the TV, the handheld mode is holding the main audience back", he'd almost have more of a point. This way round, he's just attacking a value-add for a supposed "handheld-first" audience (you know, an audience that has purchased tens of millions of copies of famously horrible on a TV games like, err... Mario Kart 8?)

Funny thing is, making a single version of the console that ships without a dock, and selling that dock separately does actually make sense as an eventual way of selling this system. But he sure arrives at that conclusion after a whole lot of nonsense.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Arguing Switch Joy-Con Drift "Isn't A Real Problem"

kupocake

Took about two years for anything to start to go wrong for me, but it has been pretty much constant since then. I own four joycon and have had drift on all of them. One of my neon yellows went in for repair at the beginning of this year, and it's on the blink again. At least the repairs have been free, but they get sneakily recorded as a "calibration issue"

They set out to make a good piece of art with the Japanese cover. The western one is a better functional piece. Giveaway is the sword, which seems like the last thing they drew into the cover in Japan, and the first in the west.

Re: Review: SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo 2 - A Fun But Ultimately Forgettable Puzzler

I'd put the offset rule on the same level as adding the spin-dash to Sonic 2. It was the missing piece of the puzzle. The series didn't really start until they added it.

Still, it's not wrong to say this is purely an archivist/enthusiast purchase considering the ruleset is essentially available in every subsequent game, two of which are available on Switch. AND there's actually a version of Puyo Puyo Tsu in the SNES app you could play online. Odd release.

Re: Guide: Luigi's Mansion 3 - Gem Locations And Gem Maps For Every Floor

@sleepinglion It's definitely a case of the puzzles being the reward themselves. If you collect every last one you will be able to select a minor cosmetic change in the gallery section in E. Gadd's lab. Same with the Boos. I doesn't even seem to be a case of the gems contributing to your gold reserves (and by extension, your final grade).

Something to show off with in Scarescraper mode, I suppose, but I wouldn't want to scare people off finding them when the reward is so miniscule because finding them was probably the most fun part of the game for me.
