In this new era of gaming on Switch, indie games are being loved and appreciated more than ever before, but one indie franchise that's always been popular with Nintendo fans is the excellent SteamWorld series from Image & Form.
The SteamWorld games have been a hit with Nintendo's audience since the Wii U and 3DS days, and a number of ports and new releases since then mean that Switch owners have already been treated to SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Dig 2, SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition, and SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech.
There's more on the way, though; Image & Form teased a new game earlier this year, and has today reconfirmed the fact that it's making "new SteamWorld games". On social media, the team says that it "would love to revisit earlier games in the series" for potential sequels.
Thankfully, despite Image & Form's upcoming title The Gunk being exclusive to Xbox and Windows, CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson says that the Switch (and future Nintendo consoles) are "natural parts" of the studio's SteamWorld plans.
Are you a fan of the series? Are you excited for more games to arrive in the future? Let us know in the comments.

I'm still hoping for steamworld heist 2 or something halfway between dig and heist.
Still can't believe there hasn't been a Steamworld Dig 3 yet.
I'm just surprised Steamworld Dig is the one indie that hasn't been infiltrated by Shovel Knight yet. Unless I missed something...
Also +1 for SWH 2.
Wait, so we are not considering SteamWorld Tower Defense for DSi as part of the series anymore?
@Rhaoulos I would love a Heist sequel as it is by far my favourite
Really want a Heist sequel too. Love that one.
Dig 3? Heist 2? Quest 2? Honestly, I'd be excited to play any of these.
Only gripe is that Quest wasn't tied to the other series plot-wise. (Aside from the Seabrass & son meta stuff) But I'm sure thats a gap that can be bridged.
Awesome, bring it on, I love these games and more can only be good for my gaming collection.... But not my wallet
Dig 2 was such a surprise. I liked Dig 1 but it really felt like an early indie game, created with quite low budget and still creating something special.
But Dig2 felt like an actual Nintendogame. So polished, so well designed, so well balanced. One of the best Metroidvanias. And this means a lot as there are just damn great Metroidvanias out there.
I think it's time for a Steam World Shmup!
I wish they'd do another Tower Defense game now that they're a bit more established as devs.
I have enjoyed TD, Dig 1 & 2 and Heist. Not so interested in Quest, to be honest.
I'll check out whatever they do next, so long as it's not a card game (like Quest).
One of the very few third party developers I drop everything for when they put a new one out.
Finger on the Monkey's paw curls and gives us 'Codename: SteamWorld'
(Steamworld Heist 2 please).
YES YES YES
My first Steamworld game was Dig 2, then I bought the first one and finished it in less than a day, and I'm obsessed with the whole franchise
Heist 2 would be amazing!
I went completely blind into Heist, and it ended up being one of my favorite games this year. Here's to a sequel!
whatever it ends up being, I'm in.
Dig 3 would be really nice. I don't care for the Heist or Quest games.
I still need to pick up SteamWorld Quest. It goes on sale often, so I'm not in a huge hurry lol.
I hope it's something new! I'd sure love a sequel to any of the games they've released so far, but I've been very impressed at their ability to produce equally compelling games across genres. I want to see them try out another genre they haven't done yet.
I still need to get the other Steamworld games. Steamworld Dig 1 was very good and Heist is one of the only strategy games I really love.
I love the versatility of the franchise so I am looking forward to whatever comes next!
