As you'll no doubt be aware by now, Nintendo dropped a fast-paced, full-fat, Mario-themed Nintendo Direct last week to share its plans for our favourite plumber's 35th anniversary. In truth, it had been a long time coming, with rumours of Super Mario 3D All-Stars and other bits and bobs starting to appear as early as March.
Now, fans have discovered that a portion of Nintendo's official website–which has since been removed–details an event that was originally planned to take place inside Super Mario Maker 2 on the 14th April, five months ahead of last week's 35th-anniversary announcements.
An archived version of the page can still be found here, and we've grabbed a screenshot for you below.
As you can see, it mentions a Ninji Speedrun course, which is likely the very same course that was announced during last week's Direct. If this news was pushed back by five months, could the other, bigger Mario announcements also have been originally planned to arrive far earlier in the year?
It seems likely, and with the coronavirus pandemic affecting all walks of life and forcing companies like Nintendo to alter plans and working practices, it's also pretty understandable.
Hey, at least it's all out there now.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

March 2021 is the date I'm thinking about.
I have no idea why it wasn’t on MAR10 day. Even with Covid, March was early enough that the advanced planning could have been put in place beforehand.
Ahhhhh so we were meant to have 11 months to buy Mario 3D all stars and not just 6. That's ok then...........
Not sure Mario 35 ports will save Xmas
@Apportal I think you will have a hard time proving that opinion.
@Apportal
smh Nintendo is so lazy they couldn't even fight off a global pandemic. I expected then to cure Covid and cancer by now.
Well I'm not surprised, Something told me that it should have aired In like June or something.
@westman98 What's the point in Mario's medical degree if he can't even cure a pandemic?
@kupocake
Dr Mario recieving his degree is the biggest scandal in the Mushroom Kingdom. Not even Yoshi's tax evasion schemes could compete.
@Apportal Wow, it's almost like Nintendo Developers are actual human beings with real lives that got heavily impacted by the pandemic causing the announcement to be delayed. But nah, Nintendo HAS to make directs WHEN their originally planned. It's not like this isn't the first time that this has happened before because of a Natural Disaster in Japan that killed people and forced the Direct to be delayed by a week or anything. THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS
Edit: He deleted the comment, but I won't say what he said. I understand that he's probably stressed from the comments.
Thank god it was just think if they told use five month ago it would have felt like forever!
@HotGoomba This shouldn't be delayed, it's a digital event. You only need one staff member (and possibly a supervisor) to build the course and then upload it to the internet. The servers will keep score as they usually do. This can be done from home like every other user.
The only real reason to delay it would be because the medals they're awarding could be harder to produce due to government shut downs. Any other excuse is bogus.
@westman98 Never did get round to playing Yoshi's New Cayman Island.
@nessisonett the 10th day of March written as "MAR10" makes sense only for the american (and maybe some commonwealth markets).
March marks the end of japanese fiscal year, so that's why nintendo like this particular date
@abdias I’m not even American. It’s just Mario day.
@Tourtus You are aware this is part of all the 35th Anniversary stuff and they wouldn't keep it as intended, if they had to delay the rest, right?
Gah, I thought it was saying the delayed it today, so that none of the games would come out until 2021.
They should have played the 35th anniversary and announce a 35 weeks delay
@abdias Not really. I’m Canadian and I understand. March 10 is MAR10 which reads MARIO.
Is it just me or was this article really inconsiderately named. It made it sound like EVERYTHING related to the 35 anniversary may have been delayed by five months from now - not five month ago!
@Tourtus You do realize that this anniversary is more than just a couple of games and a narrator speaking in the background, right?
I think there’s another reason it was delayed- Animal Crossing. There’s no way Nintendo could’ve anticipated AC’s level of success. When its all said and done, it’ll be the bestselling game on Switch, and second place won’t even be close
The sales, the mania, the Doom crossovers, it all was hilarious and staggering at the same time. Nintendo saw it all unfold, got behind it, and tucked Mario away for later. Covid or not, Animal Crossing became so big, Mario had to take a backseat on his own anniversary
@ItsOKToBeOK Second place won't be close? The current 1st place is Mario Kart and its still about 4 million ahead and regularly in the charts so even if AC takes over I don't see it being that far ahead
@RPGamer Eh, they deleted it so I'm going to let it go.
@RPGamer something stupid that I know was wrong
@carlos82 MK8 Deluxe had a 22 million unit head start. The fact that Animal Crossing has closed the gap to 4 million is stunning alone. Add in it did that in 5 months AND without having sales from a single holiday season (MK8 has had 3 holiday seasons on the shelf), it really isn’t gonna be close. Animal Crossing’s sales have been monstrous
I’d expect AC to overtake Mario Kart before the year is over
Well at least it happened this year. The 35th anniversary collection is much better than the 25th in my opinion.
Think Nintendo should extend the window of availability to at least 12 months though.
I think we’re just now seeing how much the pandemic has affected the games industry as well as just how much development takes place in the US.
We’ve had so many different measurements and rules changing on a near daily basis, and every state is different. And that’s affected even our food supply chains, with meat packing plants and such closing on a moments notice for days or weeks due to an outbreak.
But we don’t view the game industry from the same angle because we view it as a digital medium, and we know software can be made and pieced together from remote sites, so a lot of us, myself included, figured switching to remote working for them was easy and quick. It probably was not an easy adjustment. Not to mention a lot was downplayed across the board earlier this year, and a long a silence.
Frankly, I’m surprised as hell that Sony and MS are even launching their systems this year. It’s likely that they can’t afford not to at this point, but I can’t imagine the launches going spectacularly due to economic problems and so many people being tight for cash this year.
@HotGoomba @scamander This article only mentions the Super Mario Maker event being delayed, with the possibility (not a guarantee) of the other scheduled things getting delayed. The other events haven't been confirmed to have been delayed (yet) I don't see a reason to delay an online event. I don't even own Super Mario Maker 2 so I don't really care when this happens. Super Smash Bros. has had tournaments and spirit events throughout the shut downs and as far as I know, it will still hold a Mario themed tournament and Mario Kart Tour starts it's event tomorrow. I can understand delaying the physical stuff and Nintendo should take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of they're employees above all else but delaying the digital stuff just confuses me especially since they've been able to produce updates for Animal Crossing New Horizons and the aforementioned events for Smash.
@Tourtus You bring up some good points, but because there are multiple companies beyond Nintendo, so something could have been happening in the background. But I don't think we will truly ever know exactly why the direct was delayed. My only guess is that the pandemic had to do with it, that's really it.
@Kreko both
@HotGoomba I'm going to be honest mate, I just wanted to get a comment in early. Didn't really think before I spoke now did I? Thanks for understanding tho.
@nessisonett because of stock issues already being massive in Japan in march. Since China was locked already for two months.
"not finalzied version" has nothing to do with covid the level wasnt done yet
@Ulysses zelda no way there gonna shove mario down our throats in 2021 thats zeldas year
@nessisonett @nessisonett my birthday is mario day there was no such thing until 2016.
@ItsOKToBeOK that will happen!
@BabyYoshi12 thats my birthday mar10 day was not a thing until 2016
@NintendoPok 2020 is after 2016. In 2020 there was MAR10 day. In 2020, it’s the 35th anniversary of SMB. Therefore they could have celebrated MAR10 day with this collection.
@HotGoomba Wow did he get rid of the comment?
@Apportal What did you say I missed it?
@Apportal I post do dumb stuff to just don't beat yourself up.
The 35th anniversary celebrations were probably planned to be announced during a March Direct around the time GAME announced that Lego Super Mario would be announced in a Direct.
My guess would be that until the Covid train pulled into town, the plan was to announce everything on Mar10 day. 3D All Stars would have been Nintendo’s big spring release, and 3D World+ would’ve capped off the event close to Super Mario’s actual 35th anniversary on 9/18.
In the meantime E3 would’ve happened and they’d have promoted 3D World together with some big Holidays release. I wonder if we will still get such a title now?? It’s hard to believe Nintendo wouldn’t have SOMETHING beyond Pikmin in October for year-end, but this is a historically bad year.
If Kyoto remains quiet in 2020, hopefully they’ll blow the lid off of 2021 by announcing Switch Pro and an impressive title or two next Soring.
@NintendoPok Zelda's... and Metroid's
@NintendoPok Hehe, but they already have something for mario planned in zelda's year just by the mere mention of pulling this "3D mario bundle" from all storefronts in march.
@HotGoomba Weird that the global pandemic seems to have only effected Nintendo. PS4 has been knocking out a bunch of quality games this year.
@Ambassador_Kong Not surprising when you hear all the reports about Naughty Dog, CDPR, Ubisoft etc treating their employees like crap. A global pandemic isn't going to stop any of those companies from releasing games, whether it kills their staff or not.
@Ambassador_Kong Well most of Nintendo's gaming studios are in Japan, (with some exceptions like Retro Studios), and Japan got hit hard with the virus, or at least it was harder for Japanese Employees to adjust to work at home compared to other countries. Either that, or some titles from PlayStation/Sony and Xbox DID get delayed, but the ones that were closer to completion didn't. For example, it's possible that PS5's new Ratchet and Clank got slightly delayed, but since we don't have a concrete release date yet, they don't need to announce a delay.
What @Chowdaire said also is very true.
@Chowdaire idk about CDPR tbh, they did delay Cyberpunk twice this year, they don't seem to be rushing it, and I think that the game wasn't too far from completion by the time the pandemic hit.
The other 2 companies/studio, yeah you're probably right, especially with Naughty Dog.
@HotGoomba Nah, CDPR is guilty too. Jason Schrier did a whole article about their abusive practices. I also find it highly suspect that the game will be ready for launch when next gen drops. Sure it was in development for a while and they delayed it multiple times but I'm willing to put money on them whipping their staff just to hit that November date.
@Chowdaire Ah, that's interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for bringing this to my attention.
@Chowdaire The games weren't created in the last six months. They've been in development for years. Nintendo themselves stated the pandemic has no effect on games that we're scheduled to release this year which means they had nothing planned. Under powered console + lazy first party development = no games.
Also their Maio 3D collection is a lazy joke. Even Konami put more effort into their Castlevania Collection and Konami is one of the worst developers around.
@HotGoomba The lengths people go to defend the indefensible are amazing. Nintendo has proven over the last 20 years they are one of the laziest and greediest companies in the industry and people actually defend their barren releases when Nintendo themselves said the virus didn't cause any delays in this years schedule which means they had nothing planned.
In a world with the Spyro and Crash and Tony Hawk re-releases, the 3D Mario Collection is an insult, but of course this is a company that slapped Super Mario All-Stars on a disc and released it at full price.
@Ambassador_Kong While I agree Nintendo can be lazy and anti-consumer, they should be recognized as being extremely employee friendly. They don't overwork their staff, they pay them well, the upper management are not paid nearly as much as other company big-wigs, they take their time with releases etc. Honestly, gamers are too selfish, if given the choice between being consumer friendly or employee friendly I say be kind to your employees. Consumers have the choice to simply not buy or engage with a product, employees are subject to the demands of their employer. People love to rant and rave about how great and pro consumer CDPR is, which is awesome, but most ignore the fact that consumers are benefiting off the blood and sweat of their employees and seem to not care so long as they get pretty games for dirt cheap. Don't even get me started on Activision, the company responsible for those remasters you listed.
Nintendo didn't say ALL of their games weren't delayed. They said their ANNOUNCED games, or at least the ones with release dates, weren't delayed. They never said anything about unannounced games. Which means that those games were more than likely delayed.
Yes, Nintendo can definitely be lazy, anti-consumer, and (well they're a huge Company, so obviously:) greedy.
But you wanna know what Nintendo does that Activision (and Naughty Dog, Ubisoft, and hopefully not Insomniac) doesn't? TREAT THEIR EMPLOYEES LIKE LIVING AND BREATHING HUMAN BEINGS AND NOT REPLACABLES. There is a reason why Nintendo delayed these games. Not because they didn't feel like it, because their employees' lives are more important than your STUPID video game needs.
Why did you think people bashed on Naughty Dog's The Last of Us 2? It wasn't just the story, it was how they treated their employees. Google it, you'll find plenty of stories on the Naughty Dog Employees' Treatment during Development.
2 years ago, Activision layed off like 800 employees when their CEO earns like 30 million dollars a year. Oh yeah, and their employees are going on a protest again them right about now.
Back in the WiiU days, Satoru Iwata (rest his soul) cut his earnings so his employees can keep their jobs and live their lives. Even now, Nintendo's biggest names still earn way less yearly than the CEO of you know who (Activision) because they CARE about their employees.
The next time you cry about a game, please remember that the people working on said game has a, hmmm, ummm, LIFE and also, play the games you either don't already have, haven't played, haven't finished, whatever you say about online games, support indie games, etc.
@Chowdaire @HotGoomba I really doubt that the Spyro and Crash and Tony Hawk games were so well done because Activision was horrible to the team that created the collections. I think the collections were good because the teams decided to release products they were proud of. The fact that Activision and Ubisoft and Project Red treat their employees badly (and are horrible companies that should be burned to the ground) is a completely separate issue. [Note: a 2015 ranking of the best and worst gaming companies to work for actually placed Nintendo below EA, Activision, and Ubisoft. Also note this article from 2017 shows that Nintendo is just as bad (if not worse) than other gaming companies - https://www.thegamer.com/miserabl-reasons-working-at-nintendo-is-the-worst/.]
Nintendo creating a pathetic 3D collection and a barren release schedule isn't a sign of them loving their employees; it's a sign of their complete lack of respect for their customers and inability to adapt to a market that expects a constant stream of new games to keep gamers invested. Is it a surprise that the same company that still hasn't figures out online, doesn't know how to release a retro collection? Is it shocking that a company that releases consoles that are generation behind the industry can't fill a release schedule? The only surprise is that there are still people willing to defend a company that thinks people still want to waggle controllers.
I think there are a few words that can be pointed at as a reason to discard a persons comments - entitled and selfish. Gamers wanting games that are well made are not being entitled, they are customers. I know what I expect from a game in the year 2020 and if a company doesn't want to meet that expectation, there is another company waiting to take my cash. I also don't think it is selfish to want to play games on a console that someone has purchased. The PS4 has made it through the year of a pandemic because they provided a robust platform that attracted many developers to make games for it. I'm sure many things were pushed around because of the virus, but there were other projects that were able to fill the holes.
Nintendo really needs to go third party. They've proven again and again that they just don't have what it takes to put out enough games or attract enough developers to support their under powered consoles. As a third party developer they could take all the time they want to develop games and gamers can enjoy a steady stream of content from other sources between their releases.
@Ambassador_Kong 1. I literally hate "The Gamer" because they spread fake information around, so I'm not buying the claims. If anything, they're really restrictive and choose what studios work on most of the time. Also, if you're gonna tell me with a straight face that Nintendo is worse than EA, at least give me a link that actually works.
2. I will admit, the price of the 3D Collection is kinda crazy, but that's it. I don't see the point of redoing the models of Sunshine and Galaxy if those games aged really well. And I guess they didn't change 64's graphics for nostalgic reasons, idk I have no excuse for that one.
3. Nintendo respects their consumers, but if you expect Nintendo to release all these quailty titles in a year with a concrete release date, have you even been around during the WiiU days? I think Nintendo is willing to give their fans what they want most of the time (rip Chibi-Robo), but if you think that they are going to announce it right this second, you might be right because they just announced Hyrule Warriors 2, but still.
4. How dare you compare me to people defending Joy Con Drift.
5. What were we talking about before, I'm not even taking this conversation seriously anymore.
6. Yes, it's normal to expect quailty games from companies, but don't hold your breath on a game being exactly what you want or even existing, especially with Nintendo, you will set yourself up for disappointment.
7. The reason why so many games are releasing during this time is because A. Nobody said that no games will come out because of the pandemic and B. Like most of these games were either already or close to finished before the pandemic, worked on by people who normally work at home, or were delayed, slightly or majorally. Also, the Switch is about as popular with developers because it's, you know, successful.
8. AHAHAHAHAHAHA DID YOU ACTUALLY SAY THAT NINTENDO SHOULD GO THIRD PARTY AHAHAHAHAHAHA Just in case you're actually serious, no. Nintendo's systems are attractive to indie developers because those do a lot better on Switch than something else like PS4 or Xbox, so if Nintendo went third-party, it would hurt not just Nintendo and other gaming companies, but also indie developers as well. Oh yeah, and Nintendo is a lot more innovative than Sony and Microsoft, and they're currently the only major Company making handhelds anymore, so if Nintendo went third-party, it would put a huge hole in the industry. Sure, Sony could take over the handheld market, but it'll feel more like "psp, ps vita, vita 2: electric boogaloo" than "OMG GUYS THE NEW NINTENDO HANDHELD DOUBLES AS A HOME CONSOLE, AND IT MAKES YOU BREAKFAST, AND KILLS YOU IN YOUR SLEEP" So even IF Nintendo is doing stupid things, we need them to make the gaming industry not just interesting, but keeping it together.
Also if you keep talking trash, we will never get another Chibi-Robo game, so watch your mouth young
man/woman/trans-man/trans-woman/Non-binary/E
@HotGoomba I'm not going to bother with what you wrote because I value my time and sanity, but I was 100% serious that Nintendo should go third party. They can't produce a competitive console and that keeps third parties from producing games for their system which leads to months long / year long droughts of games. Nintendo likes to pretend that they aren't competing with Microsoft and Sony, but they are. There is a long history of companies that thought that they inhabited special niches in their industries only to discover they were wrong. IBM was the biggest producer of computers in America until they bet against home computers. Kodak couldn't figure a way to survive in a world without film. Xerox, Sears, AOL are all companies that used to be the heads of their industries until they forgot that customers change and so must business practices.
Nintendo might not end up on the garbage heap of failed businesses, but they exhibit the same arrogance and lack of awareness that led those other companies down the path of failure. I suspect their inability to fill a release calendar is going to be their downfall and no amount of bargain basement indie developers is going to keep them afloat. Their refusal to produce a console that can run the newest games would not be a problem if they could produce enough games on their own, but they can't even now that the 3DS is dead. Nintendo is an interesting game developer (although I believe their most creative years are far behind them), but they're horrible console designers. They always use outdated technology to keep costs down and rely on gimmicks to generate interest. They are completely ignorant of modern trend and industry standards - online, trophies, graphical power, robust third party support.
As a game developer only, they could focus on what they do best (developing games) without making their fans feel like they're missing out on all the biggest releases. It's a smart move and would expand their customer base.
@Ambassador_Kong You complain about the long message I wrote, than you do the same exact thing. Makes perfect sense. 🙄
But did you serious compare Nintendo to IBM, Kodak, Xerox, Sears and AOL? Nintendo actually makes good business decisions. Funny thing is, Nintendo almost had to go Third-party after the GameCube, but then they decided to make a casual console, the Wii, and they did very well.
And remember, I'm not saying that Nintendo is a perfect company. Joy Con Drift needs to be fixed ASAP, it's strange that it's pretty weak compared to the competition, they're format for game announcements is strange; I get why you're mad at Nintendo.
But in my next comment (which is a copy and paste of of yesterday's comment because I don't care about this conversation anymore) I will explain why Nintendo shouldn't go Third-party.
@Ambassador_Kong Nintendo's systems are attractive to indie developers because those do a lot better on Switch than something else like PS4 or Xbox, so if Nintendo went third-party, it would hurt not just Nintendo and other gaming companies, but also indie developers as well.
Oh yeah and about their weaker console, they'll probably announce a Switch Pro or something idk.
@Ambassador_Kong You know what, I'm done with this conversation. I'm gonna enjoy my life now. Hope you have a nice life.
