After more than 20 years of waiting, Pokémon fans can finally tuck into a brand new game in the spin-off Snap series today thanks to the launch of New Pokémon Snap.
With plenty of Pokémon to discover, brand new characters and locations to see, and a lovely, shiny new look for this beloved series, this new game has been on our radar ever since it was announced. Having said that, we're old enough to recall every single second of the original game, so perhaps the nostalgia had us sold before our wallets even had a chance.
For those who never played the original, though, we imagine Snap's gameplay might sound a little odd. We've seen several Switch owners asking "what the point" of the game is, or wondering how photographing monsters can be "fun," so it'll be interesting to see how the new release goes down with a new generation of Pokémon fans.
And as such, we hand things over to you. Are you buying this new game? Has the original influenced your decision at all? Vote away in our poll, and feel free to expand upon your choice in the comments below.
You can check out our full review of the game right here if you want to learn more about it before making your decision, or you can grab a physical copy here if you've already made up your mind.

My copy from Amazon arrived earlier this afternoon. Just finally finished Root Double which I'd slowly been playing over the last few weeks so just about to get stuck into it now and will play it over the weekend.
I’ll be picking up my copy later today, haven’t been to a Walmart in a while but I hope they still do that $10 off thing.
Anyways, I’m really excited to play it. Been waiting over 20 years for this game as my brothers and I played the original so many times as kids!
I'll get it someday, but don't need it Day 1.
I’ll be happy to buy this game on sale somewhere down the line. Can’t justify a purchase right now since I’m entering exam season so I really wouldn’t have time to play it until June at least.
well i have to take pics of pokemon this weekend so yeah
I will be getting it but the nintendostore in the UK only started selling it today for some reason. So I will be ordering from them and getting it sometime next week.
Just ordered from the Nintendo Store with the free gifts for my offsprings birthday. Very happy and relieved as Nintendo Store had no pre-orders, and all the gift bundles were sold out on Amazon. And looking forward to playing myself, but I'll have to wait!
Not an N64 kid and still slightly non-plussed about the appeal, even as someone who finally came round on the main series way too old. You're just taking screenshots of those pesky pocket monsters?
I should probably give it a try at some point, I mean, I can flip it if it really doesn't click with me.
Been waiting decades for a sequel so yup ASAP.
I will eventually, but I'm waiting to see if it will be discounted first because, quite frankly, I'm not exactly willing to pay $80AUD for a camera simulator.
@DeathByLasagna As far as I know, they still do that if you're getting it in-store (at least at my Walmart).
I'm sorry i couldn't pick New Pokemon Snap day one because i have ordered Keyboardmania PS2 and some cheap Wii games (DDR Hottest Party, Disney's High School Musical 3 Dance, Barbie as the Island Princess) for May 2020 purchase day.
I have to get Keyboardmania PS2 to complete my six kinds of BEMANI PS2 games (DDR, Para Para Paradise, Guitar Freaks & DrumMania, Beatmania IIDX, Pop'n Music, KeyboardMania).
I will pick New Pokemon Snap several months later.
Nintendo can keep it, that's my opinion.
If they start rolling out the games, the fans want, I'm in again.
Undecided, i like the idea and the execution looks solid from Bamco. However i don't like Pokemon and i have a fair few games to play at the moment. Likely wait for a sale and see if i am still interested.
I'm waiting on picking it up until I have my week long hospital stay scheduled... I love the original and having New Snap as a treat to look forward to while in hospital makes it less scary... kinda... sorta...
Hoping to get it in this week. I'm sure there will be more than just natural behavior. Remember the first one having funny moments. I'm certain there will be this one and it's good to relax once in a while.
Pre-ordered it from a local Mom and Pop shop AND my fixed Joy Cons came back from Nintendo a few days ago! I'm ready for this!
@Nintendo4Sonic The games you want
Yes, unfortunately it won’t be day 1, but I will get it sometime in May or June.
It's intriguing, great looking, but I'm not sure it's something I can get into.
@Crockin no, the "fans" want. Longtime Nintendo fans would jump out of their pants, if Nintendo would finally bring a new F Zero, Metroid or else. Nintendo knows that, the fans know it. But Nintendo doesn't care.
Instead they release filler garbage like this or Mario Golf. Come on, I can't take them serious anymore.
I'll buy 2nd hand off ebay sometime in the future if I remember/care. My backlog is too big to justify the price right now and my interest in Pokémon after Sw/Sh is the lowest it's ever been
@Nintendo4Sonic irate gamurr alert
No, I just stopped living in a total nostalgia world and want to play real games. Grown up games, which sadly don't arrive on a Switch and even if they come, they look like a mess on Nintendos dated mobile console.
@AndyC_MK and I still say so. Balan deserves an 8/10. But I'm not alone by that. And at least, Balan is something new and not another same remaster of the same Jump N Runs all over
Seems I made followers here on Nintendolife without knowing 😂
@AndyC_MK please, don't get a heart attack, because i talked bad about your beloved Pokemon photo game.
The time you're wasting here, by defending your Switch through your pink/red glasses, you could use that time and play your Photo game. Life is short dude😉
I was gonna make a comment but now that an argument is happening I've changed my mind. I hope your both happy.
@AndyC_MK my god, how you got triggered🤣
I'm a hard pass. I Didn't like the first one and this is just more of the same.
@AndyC_MK boy, I think you're the one with problems. I don't have to justify, what's in my games list.
And you know what? I'm way above that. I've come so far in my life, because I have a strong mind. And I don't care about a wimp like you.
I have a good life, a good job, a nice girlfriend which deeply loves me. I'm someone who prefers good food to alcohol. I do sports and have a good body. I'm a family man and help an old lady, which is too weak to take her dog for a walk anymore.
I you'll achieve half of that in your life, you can be grateful.
I was going to say that the original snap came out when we were all kids and some of us were still mind blown over seeing our beloved 2D characters in textureless 3D. That's not the case now, so I'm gonna wait as the game hasn't shown me to have more than the core concept.
@magnumc500 that's right
Ni no Kuni 2 is coming to Switch and no news about it here?
Never jumped onto the pokémon bandwagon but very happy for anyone who's gonna get their pokém on today
It's in the post right now
Maybe at some point, but I'm in no rush to play it.
That's a big ol' NO for me.
@AndyC_MK I would like to thank you for showing me another user I should ignore. But I am sorry you had to go through that conversation. Also, seeing as you recently joined, I'd advise against asking Anti-Matter too many questions, as most to all answers involve shovelware.
Rarely buy games at MSRP, more of a half price or less guy, and at that I usually only buy games I know are going to last me 20 hours or so. Still haven't seen too much officially about how long this game will last, but I've seen 10 hours, which seems like a rental, or $20 to purchase.
I'd probably play a demo for an hour and call it a day. Still waiting on Labo VR support, or at the very least Labo Camera, which shouldn't be too hard. They got Zelda BotW working in VR.
My house hold its about 99% digital when it comes to Switch (4 units in the house) but I think I’ll opt to get this game physically. Never played Snap so I’m not sure what the replay value is. Might be better to buy one copy & pass it around.
Hey @ryancraddock here's a poll question for you.
Pokemon fan, getting it.
Pokemon fan, not getting it.
Not a Pokemon fan, getting it.
Not a Pokemon fan, not getting it.
I think that should cover everybody? Just trying to see if this game has much appeal to non-Pokemon gamers. I know Pokémon is huge here, but it's not 100%.
I'll get it in June once I'm done with my deadlines
I think I’m gonna go buy it today with some leftover gift cards I have. Loved the game on 64, and am a Pokémon fan for sure.
@BlackenedHalo Oh dang really?! I literally just bought it on ps4 in the spring sale cause I thought it wouldn’t come to switch. Damn it. I did only pay like 12 bucks tho. Shoot. Would have been nice having them both physical on the same console.
@AndyC_MK The account deletion is understandable, honestly. One way I make the time I spend writing paragraph after paragraph better is by saving them all in a folder. Is it healthy? I don't know, probably not. But I always have it there to easily copy and paste if a similar situation arises.
Of course I can agree with some of the stuff he says, but the way in which he goes about saying it is absolutely terrible. But most of it is just crap. I never know why someone would want to waste time just commenting random crap on websites. Maybe some sick pleasure?
And maybe I have a sick pleasure too. I enjoyed reading your replies, how he was getting totally knocked out of the ring. It was funny how at the end he said that he's just happy to have a good life, and that you'll never amount to anything. When for all he knows you're a trillionaire!
But regardless, thanks for this bit of entertainment!
Nope! Happy it exists, and I’m so excited for Pokémon Snap fans though! 😊
No, imagine spending $60 to take pictures lol
I would...if my copy arrived
Not a game for me......still unsure about kids. They are ehhh on it thus far
Going out of my way to buy this used, which pains me to say as someone who loves the original. Just can't justify giving TPC any more money.
@AndyC_MK I believe you are correct, it did sound like that. It would also explain why he comments everything else on this site. A search for meaning... Humanity needs meaning. Otherwise its easy to end up like this poor fellow. I'm just glad my search ended a few years ago.
@AndyC_MK couldn't care less if you're looking forward to or enjoying this or not. The idea of spending $60 to take pictures is hilarious to me
What you choose to spend those $60 on is entirely up to you
@AndyC_MK Personally it's because of how TPC have conducted themselves in the past five or so years, though I'm sure these problems began far earlier. Partnering with the CCP-owned Tencent to push out low quality mobile games, allowing employees to harass disappointed fans on social media unreprimanded (Turner), donating to Black Lives Matter, and so on, and this is not to mention the record low quality of their software output. Sword and Shield, the Diamond and Pearl remakes, the "open world" spinoff that looks like it's being made in the Sonic Adventure 1 Dreamcast engine. Even the marketing is off-putting to the point where an event as universally loveable as a Pokémon series anniversary is "celebrated" with poor taste CGI celebrity musical cameos (such a low level thing, but it's all part of a larger pattern at TPC in making interactions with the series unpleasant). Snap aside, which is the one pleasant thing they've done in a long time, every single decision small and large they have made in the past several years is as if it were specifically hand-crafted to make me not want to purchase their products, and I've played them all since Red. I may criticize, but I love Pokémon as much as anyone, it's very disappointing as a fan.
Just can't justify paying full price for a new game in this series until there is some fundamental change in how they are conducting themselves, and considering the money they still unaccountably make on merchandising alone, that won't be happening anytime soon.
I got it, but due to family circumstances I hadn't gotten a chance to play it much yet. But what I've played so far is really lovely, this is the new pokémon snap game we've been wanting all this time and then some.
@AndyC_MK Yeah I find it really charming, I love it.
I can take photos in Monster Hunter Rise...so yeah.
I'm enjoying it, and it's a particularly nice game to play with the kids in short bursts.
It's full of irritations though, and it falls woefully short of what it could have been. Honestly looks and feels like a mobile game... Do they even realise the Switch can be docked and played on a TV?
NL keep referencing this game as good looking... it really isn't.
The lack of dialogue is irritating. The repetition of literally a handful of words that are spoken is unforgiveable.
So yeah... having fun with it, but I am not impressed and I feel like the price tag is a bit embarrassing actually.
I’d rather hunt my monsters and forge armor and weapons from their parts than to go around and take pictures of them. Can I get a Pokémon/Monster Hunter crossover? 😈
I would love to, but it’s much to expensive.
@Nintendo4Sonic So above it you randomly decided to jump into an article about a game you don’t like and start slagging it off. Then surprised when people got annoyed with the behaviour
@Judal27 Although I understand the criticism. This is basically an arcade shooter, only instead of shooting bullets you’re shooting pictures. Even the scores at the end... it’s the same concept
I ordered it (I've waited over a decade for a sequel!), but Best Buy shipped my copy late, so I unfortunately won't be playing it until Monday...
Got mine copy from game collection and came with the gifts and all 😊am loving the game brings back so many good memories from the original I played as a kid.
I've never played any Pokemon game. And this won't be my first. Eventually I'll get around to trying Sword I think.
This game is absolutely incredible. I played it for hours last night and enjoyed it so much. The visual aspect alone is jaw dropping. This, in my opinion, is the most beautiful game there is on switch. But of course the gameplay is fantastic too.
About 10 game hours for such a price tag, no thank you.
Well, I got to see my wife jumping up and down for joy, and then got to read these comments, so 10/10 would buy again.
@MontyCircus It's probably a bit like saying Mario Kart is a Mario game... (and I've also never really got into Pokemon, although I do love the actual characters).
Good avatar/username.
I'll watch it on youtube while taking screencap pictures = Pokemon Snap Cheap version for free
Been playing
Geez. Who got knocked out of the ring?
Not me.
Complains about wasting time here, what are you doing here?
What is this here? It is not the holy Bible. It's a comment section on 1 article on a website, where everyone is free to comment his opinions.
I wasn't in search for a discussion, I was just saying, I don't care about this game and a lot of, what Nintendo does right now.
That doesn't mean, I hate Nintendo.
The thing is, I soon realized, that Andy felt so attacked about his Pokemon game, he absolutely loves, so I didn't matter what I'm going to say. He has to defend his game of love to death and he even freaked out so bad, that he started stalking my profile.
Boy, I'm sorry for you, that you don't have more important things to do with your life time.
I didn't do something wrong and that's the case. And I saw, that I'm not the only person here, who doesn't care about Pokemon Snap.
Deal with it!
As much as I have cherished memories with the original Pokémon Snap on N64, this is something I'm only mildly interested in now as I haven't kept up with Pokémon since the original generation.
I might check this out once it's on a significant sale maybe 3-4 years from now with Nintendo 🤦🏾♂️.
Timing is everything, had this sequel come out many years ago I'd surely have more interest. But 22 years?! In this technological/information era where interest, support, feedback and engagement are far more easy to gather and assess... Nintendo really needs to work on listening to fans and serving up demand in a more timely manner.
I am still glad it's finally been made and hope true fans are satisfied, as well as that maybe kids of today can experience similar magic we had with Snap 64 with this entry. Also enjoyed the old Pokémon Stadiums, hopefully they get another one of those too!
Very chill game. Quite repetitive, but addicting. 7.5/10 for me. It's very short, but it will have great replay value for anyone who wants to get all diamond 1-4 stars for every Pokemon.
@Nintendo4Sonic
LMAO, the fact that you'll call Pokémon Snap a kiddie on rails photo game but praise Balan Wonderland, a "kiddie" game that's technically broken and flat out bad, is hilarious. You're obviously a troll. I'm playing Returnal and Pokémon Snap together, why not both? I still play my Switch ten times more than my ps5 because it at least has games.
@Nintendo4Sonic
The reason they're going after you is because you make stupid comments to instigate an argument. Expect to get argued with. Stop being a petulant child trying to defend yourself and leave if you have nothing to add to the conversation.
Never played the original; bought this one on release day. Will finally play it tonight.
@TheAwesomeBowser It won't be discounted quickly. Nintendo don't discount these popular mainstream games quickly. $80 is RRP. You can get it for $68 or less in chain stores and Amazon. At best, perhaps a temporary discount to $60 at Christmas time. Nintendo release on their "player choice" at 50% off for their major games if they ever discount, and that can take years.
10 hour game? 😂 Its defenately not a 10 hour game! Sure, you might be able to unlock all the routes within 10 hours and get to view the ending but you certainly cant lvl up all the routes (which change the pokemon behavior and which pokemon appear) and complete the pokedex, complete the challenges or even see all the pokemon in 10 hours thus, not doing all the game offers. You get out what you put in. Streets of rage 4 could be ran through in a couple of hours on a stangard difficulty and that launched for half this price. Worth every penny tho as SOR4 is an amazing game and i got out of it more than i expected to. Im enjoying snap immensely and even got my wife (who hates games) to have a couple of goes on it despite wiping the majotity of my good pictures and replacing them with her own lacklustre attempts 😉. I rate a games monetary value not on how long the game is but what i get out of the game in those hours. Done 11 hours so far and not even levelled any course to max yet. Some will like it, some wont 🤷♂️🙎♂️
@Phostachio thanks for your super advices.
I was already leaving, only came back because 1 freaked out.
Calling someone a troll is very easy. Maybe I didn't use the best words about childish games. Balan Wonderworld isn't a broken game, it just doesn't get a fair chance. Maybe it's a broken game on Switch, I don't know about that version.
And playing the Switch ten times more is your cup of tea. I'm looking forward to Kaze and the Wild Masks and the new Wonderboy game. These are games, that fit the Switch perfectly.
But where does the PS5 has no games? 😁 Seems you oversaw a little bit. The PS5 has the best selection of all. And that's no trolling, it's just the truth.
@AndyC_MK got from the estoppel myself.i love it.i also come from the nes days
@AndyC_MK now, you think you're talking for everyone?
And you, 37 and act like a child to everyone who doesn't like Pokemon Snap?
Who do you think you are?
@AndyC_MK Bro, if you have fun with New Pokemon Snap, that's fine.
It was never my intention, to talk this game bad to people, who enjoy it.
