Re: Review: Pillars Of Eternity: Complete Edition - The Game That Saved Obsidian Comes To Switch

I'm torn between this and waiting for the 2nd. I've heard they added turn based combat mode to the sequel which is right up my alley, but I prefer the look of this one as the pirate ship type setting going on in the sequel doesn't appeal. I always found the pause time combat in the old D&D RPG's impenetrable so worried this one will be the same. I would very much like a demo!

@hihelloitsme I think the issue is often smaller studios porting to Switch as an afterthought. If a team builds the game with the Switch in mind from day 1 they will be constantly keeping performance in mind so it will work out better in the end. A small studio only has so much cash to spend optimising years worth of work, and it sometimes ends up in a mess. I think as the Switch player base grows and game sales remain high in comparison to other platforms Switch will be in the running straight away. In fact this is probably what's happening now with games which will be out next year and later.

@Henmii a single playthrough may only be 8 hours but you can randomise the map which gives a lot of replay value. Plus you can attempt it in permadeath mode, and also the playstyles between Link and Zelda are different, different abilities and apparently differences to the world map. I highly recommend the game, it's immensely fun and the combat is really engrossing. It's a real zone-out type of game where you forget everything around you during combat.

I bought this last night on a whim in bed and it's bloody brilliant. I couldn't put it down, once I got used to the combat. The soundtrack is amazing, my wife actually said "why are you doing that shoulder dance while you're playing that game". I've had necro dancer for ages on my switch because I'm always scared off by the difficulty of rogue likes but this isn't a rogue like at all, you unlock the map as you go and keep a lot of progress between deaths. It's the perfect balance of difficulty and progression, for me.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Ponders A Witcher 3 Switch Port

I've played every Witcher game, and every one of them I've given up around 10/15 hours in. Great world, story, characters, absolutely pathetic combat. Potentially the worst I've ever experienced in an RPG. That said, if there was a switch release I'd be tempted to double dip and play on story mode.

Re: Feature: The Best Nintendo Switch RPGs

@Cissero I really couldn't get on with Diablo. I put about 12 hours into it but it was just so easy. I had it on the hardest setting that you can choose initially, and I don't think I died once. I was playing a wizard and there is an energy beam attack which is so overpowered that I never used a single other attack. All I had to do was walk around holding down a single button while doing a bit of mana management. I really don't get the love for it. I sold it and bought Civ 5 though so I'm not too fussed

I did a couple of hours on DD last night and it's exactly what I wanted, although I haven't ventured very far into the world yet. I was totally up for a slightly silly last-gen RPG with a good combat system and middling voice acting. I'll take this game over the Witcher 3 any day of the week! (I have played Witcher 3, good story but I feckin hated the combat).

@Likethepear I'm new to the series too, and I found it hard initially, mainly because the help videos are buried in the menus a bit. but the thing is, it's actually a very simple game. There are 2 attack buttons, and pressing a direction with either button does a different attack. That's literally it for the basics. There is a lot of other technical stuff but that knowledge is enough to play the game properly. It took me a couple of hours before I started knowing what the hell I was doing, and now I love it. Just go in training mode and test out all the moves, then play classic mode on a low difficulty and it is very easy.

Re: Dungeon Crawler The Keep Arrives On Switch Just In Time For Christmas

jcvandan

@Slib no, I am definitely up for trying another dungeon crawler if it gets positive reviews, but I the thing I really loved about Grimrock 2 was the lovely world. It all fit together beautiful and I really enjoyed exploring it, in fact it's one of my favourite game-worlds of all time thinking about it. It doesn't look to me like this game would offer anything along those lines.
