@WhiteTrashGuy yes it has exactly the same type of combat as Baldur's Gate, I was just saying I was worried I'd fine the systems too obscure like I do in those games. Probably because they use some arcane D&D rules that aren't really exposed to the player.
I'm torn between this and waiting for the 2nd. I've heard they added turn based combat mode to the sequel which is right up my alley, but I prefer the look of this one as the pirate ship type setting going on in the sequel doesn't appeal. I always found the pause time combat in the old D&D RPG's impenetrable so worried this one will be the same. I would very much like a demo!
I got this for the princely sum of £1 yesterday from Argos, as I got a free £10 voucher from another purpose. Not played it yet but was letting my son play with the toys, which are actually quite cool.
Links Awakening, Planescape, maybe Astral Chain depending on reviews. And I've literally just pre-ordered that Hori Pro Joy Con controller cause it looks frickin' awesome.
@WOLF13 well yeah, Ps4 and Xbox have been out a long time so they won't be selling anywhere near as many consoles. Plus the back catalogs are much bigger. If a million Switch consoles sold in the last month then you have a million people buying Mario Odyssey and BOTW because they're 2 of the best games every made, so they're bound to be in the top.
@hihelloitsme I think the issue is often smaller studios porting to Switch as an afterthought. If a team builds the game with the Switch in mind from day 1 they will be constantly keeping performance in mind so it will work out better in the end. A small studio only has so much cash to spend optimising years worth of work, and it sometimes ends up in a mess. I think as the Switch player base grows and game sales remain high in comparison to other platforms Switch will be in the running straight away. In fact this is probably what's happening now with games which will be out next year and later.
@arekdougy I think what's going on here, is I have just never heard of any of the new pop musicians or modern genres so I'm assuming it's weird and obscure. I realised I was getting old recently when I started to actively avoid pubs that play loud music.
I wouldn't listen to anything that Pitchfork say. It's the absolute pinnacle of hipster. The more obscure and lacking in melody, the more likely Pitchfork will give it a good review, it's a laughable site.
My first ever video game. Me and my brother got a Master System II for Christmas in the early 90's when I was about 5 or 6. It was a special time! My Dad still talks about this game (and the crappy Master System Shinobi port) to this day.
@Tsurii yeah I am the same, I don't have enough time to do the extra bosses. Brilliant that they are there for people though, or for me to do the odd one I like.
If those screenshots are anything to go by, this is going to look absolutely fine in handheld. Double dip for me, got about 20 hours in on PS4 (PRO) but gave up as I couldn't click with the combat. The whole potion thing really spoiled it for me, meant it was too stoppy/starty. I'll play through on the easiest mode then that's not an issue.
@Henmii a single playthrough may only be 8 hours but you can randomise the map which gives a lot of replay value. Plus you can attempt it in permadeath mode, and also the playstyles between Link and Zelda are different, different abilities and apparently differences to the world map. I highly recommend the game, it's immensely fun and the combat is really engrossing. It's a real zone-out type of game where you forget everything around you during combat.
I bought this last night on a whim in bed and it's bloody brilliant. I couldn't put it down, once I got used to the combat. The soundtrack is amazing, my wife actually said "why are you doing that shoulder dance while you're playing that game". I've had necro dancer for ages on my switch because I'm always scared off by the difficulty of rogue likes but this isn't a rogue like at all, you unlock the map as you go and keep a lot of progress between deaths. It's the perfect balance of difficulty and progression, for me.
These look brilliant, I can't play any games that use the right stick a lot in handheld without a big clip on grip. I wish there was something like this that had all the features like gyro etc, I'd happily spend £100 on that if they felt as good at the pro controller.
I've played every Witcher game, and every one of them I've given up around 10/15 hours in. Great world, story, characters, absolutely pathetic combat. Potentially the worst I've ever experienced in an RPG. That said, if there was a switch release I'd be tempted to double dip and play on story mode.
I would really like them to have run their backgrounds through one of these new-fangled AI texture sharpeners. They have definitely cleaned them up but there is still a stark contrast between character models and backgrounds.
@Cissero I really couldn't get on with Diablo. I put about 12 hours into it but it was just so easy. I had it on the hardest setting that you can choose initially, and I don't think I died once. I was playing a wizard and there is an energy beam attack which is so overpowered that I never used a single other attack. All I had to do was walk around holding down a single button while doing a bit of mana management. I really don't get the love for it. I sold it and bought Civ 5 though so I'm not too fussed
I did a couple of hours on DD last night and it's exactly what I wanted, although I haven't ventured very far into the world yet. I was totally up for a slightly silly last-gen RPG with a good combat system and middling voice acting. I'll take this game over the Witcher 3 any day of the week! (I have played Witcher 3, good story but I feckin hated the combat).
@Quarth I ended up buying it digitally. Not worth paying 80% more just for the cartridge. I do prefer cartridge but usually because it's cheaper than digital with Nintendo games!
Very much up for this game on the Switch, avoided it so far as there's bloody way I can spend 80 hours sat in front of my TV (toddler and job). On the Switch though I could just take my time with it and get through it whilst in bed etc.
I might actually end up buying this now, been thinking for a while that it would be a good one to play while my 2 year old watches, but I was put off by the mandatory motion controls as I play in bed a lot as well. I can see if it's a deal breaker now.
This game looks cool, just bought it based on the high steam reviews. Looks like something to chill out in bed with once I get bored of Stardew Valley.
@Likethepear I'm new to the series too, and I found it hard initially, mainly because the help videos are buried in the menus a bit. but the thing is, it's actually a very simple game. There are 2 attack buttons, and pressing a direction with either button does a different attack. That's literally it for the basics. There is a lot of other technical stuff but that knowledge is enough to play the game properly. It took me a couple of hours before I started knowing what the hell I was doing, and now I love it. Just go in training mode and test out all the moves, then play classic mode on a low difficulty and it is very easy.
@Slib no, I am definitely up for trying another dungeon crawler if it gets positive reviews, but I the thing I really loved about Grimrock 2 was the lovely world. It all fit together beautiful and I really enjoyed exploring it, in fact it's one of my favourite game-worlds of all time thinking about it. It doesn't look to me like this game would offer anything along those lines.
