The month of April is upon us and it means a whole new batch of games are coming to the Switch. Our lovely video producer Alex Olney has once again put together a watchable list of the finest ones on the way. Still, it's been quite hard to narrow down when so many quality games are being released around the same time. Heck, we're even getting our first taste of VR on the Switch, courtesy of Nintendo Labo. So, without further ado, here are just some of the games to be on the lookout for in April:
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition - Out 2nd April
Mechstermination Force - Out 4th April
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - Out 9th April
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit - Out 12th April
Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster - Out 16th April
My Time at Portia - Out 16th April
Cuphead - Out 18th April
Katana Zero - Out 18th April
Mortal Kombat 11 - Out 23rd April
European release: May 2019
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Out 23rd April
SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech - Out 25th April
BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! - Out 26th April
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - Out 30th April
What games on this list are you looking forward to playing during the month of April? Can you remember a month of gaming as jam-packed as this in recent times? Tell us down below.

Is the Switch version of MK 11 still coming out in April?
I thought it was early May.
@GeeEmm
Just in Europe.
Cuphead and Steamworld for sure! Mortal Kombat probably, if the port is good.
I want Cuphead, but amma wait for that physical release with the DLC later this year. Only thing I'll be getting in April is the Konami Arcade bundle thingy.
And Joker added to Smash!
Cuphead, Boxboy + Boxgirl, and Ace Attorney.
and, i need a Micro SD Card. im already out of space.
not sure about the rest though as for MK11 im gonna that pick up for likely PS4, Switch or PC. (i have not decided yet though.)
My Time at Portia and Cuphead has my eye for now.
@KryptoniteKrunch
Ooops my bad. Cheers!
Being a responsible adult sucks.
Anybody wanna donate to the “Ryu needs games fund?” I paid all my bills. It’s a good cause.
My poor wallet.
This month is crazy.
PreOrdered Cuphead & Katana Zero. Considering Steamworld game (never played any but I'm interested). Mortal kombat maybe (but for ps4). Having love gunman clive really considering Mechstermination Force.
Last year was a gamers heaven, looks like this will be the same.
I have never played either of those Final Fantasy Games, which one is better?
I have Darksiders Warmastered on two other platforms. I'm not going to buy it at launch, but I bet if it goes on sale I eventually triple dip.
Yay Labo is gonna be one year old soon. April is definitely going to dry up my wallet with these amount of good games coming.
Very hyped for ff12 on the go!
Labo for sure, grabbing Yoshi tomorrow. Maybe Phoenix Wright, I’m still undecided.
BoxBoy + BoxGirl is probably a definite buy for me, while LABO VR and/or one of the Final Fantasies are maybes.
As for LABO, while I want to support VR in gaming (I enjoy my PSVR, of which I know LABO isn't trying to replicate), I'm not sure how I'd get on with the building parts. As for FF, it would probably take me months to get through even one with the way I split my time between Switch & PS4, lol.
I'm getting Yoshi tomorrow though, which I'm excited about.
Dragon's Dogma for me
Dragon's Dogma and FF 12 might be a go for me.
It's disappointing to see how many people here aren't even looking at Dragon's Dogma. Sigh. That game deserves more attention.
On a side note, I've been excited for Katana Zero for a very long time. I can't wait to play it. Also, I'll probably dabble in some FF12.
Dragons Dogma all day and good reviews pending, Katana Zero, is a definite maybe. Don’t sleep on Dragons Dogma you guys. Good stuff, for 30 measly bucks.
My 5000th comment.
It's a crazy month for games. If I could I'd buy all of the games listed except for Darksiders, My Time at Portia and Final Fantasy XII. I'm also very interested in Shadowgate and the newly announced Hob. That's 12 games I'd like to play but I'll have to settle for just 2 or 3 or maybe 4.
Cuphead and Dragons Dogma are definites. Hob is very likely and Mechstermination Force will be hard to resist. After seeing how happy Alex was after trying Labo VR I really want to try it too but I think I might hang off on that until I get back to the UK in May so I can play it with my nephew.
I’m glad we’re in the business of cheapening our superlative adjectives
@Gen0neD What type of game is it?
Dragon's Dogma and FF12 for me. Both games I've wanted to play but never got a chance too. I gotta get em both beat before Fire Emblem drops. Then that one before Astral Chain. Not to mention time in there to play Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Bulletstorm and Ultimate Alliance 3! It's such a good time to be a gamer.
Boxboy, Cuphead, Katana Zero and SteamWorld Quest for me next month.
In order of priority
Deep Breath
Cuphead
MK11
FFX/X-2
FF12
Steamworld Quest
Ace Attorney Trilogy
and Katana Zero
Plus I still need to get Sekiro for my PS4, April's gonna be rough for my wallet, good for me though.
@Action51 Both X and XII are extremely good games. X is easier to get into, but XII may be my personal favorite in the series. X2 is sort of looked down (I've not played it), but it comes alongside one of the series' best.
@onex I know you didn't ask me but, it's an action-adventure. Totally unique in it's own right of course but, you could liken it to Zelda, The Elder Scrolls or The Witcher.
@Action51 Honestly it depends on you. Both are total different games. X is more turn based style while XII is more like a single player MMO. X also comes with X-2.
@OorWullie Congratulations - here's to another 5,000!
I'll wait on reviews before getting Labo and I'm definitely waiting for a physical release of Cuphead
Dragon's dogma and ffxii ftw
@Liam_Doolan Cheers pal. It's took me just under 11 years to get to 5000 comments. If I continue at this rate, I'll be approaching a half century of gaming at the time I hit 10,000 comments. Scary thought
@onex Ok, I’m going to do my best to not talk this up too much. What I’ll do, is share what happened to me when I originally bought it for 360 (way back in the days)
When DD 1st came out, I was going through a weird phase, where games, as a whole, just weren’t doing it for me. This bothered me, because I swore I’d be gaming until death.
One day, an article titled “Are you bored with gaming?” or something along those lines magically appeared before me. And I was like “Why, yes. Yes I am.” Cutting to the chase, the overall synopsis was - if your bored with gaming, play games outside of your typical genres. At that time, it was 1st person shooters, fighting games and kinda all the stereotypical games, non-gamers think gamers play. Barring such favorites as Zelda and Metroid.
I was looking at this game prior to release and when it did release it got solid reviews. Not stellar, solid. Mostly 7’s and 8’s with everyone complimenting the combat and creature animations.
It’s style, at the time, was completely outside of my arena. Open world, create a character, companion management, asynchronous online component and what have you. “Screw it.” I said “Let’s give it a shot.”
So I played. And played. And played. I played so much that I actually recognized that I was playing way more than I was aware of. To the point where I stopped what I was doing to see my play time. Which was... 76hrs?
I said “Whoa... I guess I like it.” And went right back to playing for more than 200hrs with both me and my pawn MAXED as a magic archer and a sorceress. We were unstoppable. And I think part of the allure was that you start off very fragile and you can become (almost) op. You can have a total of four people in your party, but I only needed me and my pawn. NOBODY stood a chance. Even on hard. Dragons be damned.
If you’re unsure, YouTube it and get an idea. What made it a cult classic, is that it’s on the cusp of greatness. It just needed a sequel with a bigger budget and everyone that played it, saw it. We never got it dammit.
Lots of cool classes to choose from and they all do cool stuff.
I’m gonna stop here. Basically, there aren’t many games where I’d say, “Just give it a shot.” But this is one of them. Even if you don’t love it, you won’t hate it. It is a challenge though. Only it’s nowhere near as punishing as Dark Souls. You will die, until you get to a point, where almost nothing can kill you.
YouTube it my friend. Give it a look and perhaps even, if you’re feeling adventurous... give it a shot.
Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch seems to be a good port (60 FPS, competent graphics), so I may actually pick up this version.
May also try the $40 Labo VR kit, mainly for Labo Garage VR.
I'm interested in Dragon's Dogma (will import from the US as there will be no physical version in Europe) , the Final Fantasies and maybe Darksiders.
Will wait for a physical release of Cuphead. I don't know if I will get Mortal Kombat, it seems the most exciting thing about those games are the fatalities, but I can be wrong.
Today I will be picking up the new Yoshi game!
mortal kombat & ace attorney for me.
Darksiders, cuphead and maybe something else if im feeling dangerous
Mortal Kombat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only MK11 on Switch for me in April. I'll wait on the physical release for Cuphead.
You forgot to mention Metroid 4 coming out on the first day of April.
Like others I’m waiting for the physical of Cuphead. My nephew is buying MK11 for PS4, so I’m off the hook there. I got Labo preordered. I was a sucker and bought FFVII this week, and Blaster Master Zero 2 has been great. So I’m looking at FFXII ‘cause I haven’t touched it. I’m down the rabbit hole on like 5 different RPG’s that I rotate, and use indie’s as palette cleanser’s when I’m unable to devote hours. That said, I’ll probably get Yoshi when I’m waiting for my car to get an oil change tomorrow. Yikes.
Good God... I guess fighting game fans get something at least.
I'll probably buy FFX/X-2 and Dragon's Dogma but I'm also interested in Phoenix Wright, Katana Zero, FFXII, Steamworld Quest and Cuphead (already have My time at Portia and Darksiders on Steam). Though I think the problem nowadays is having time to play all these new games (and games in my library that are no longer new)...
@kobashi100 What do you mean with "this month"????? THIS YEAR!!!
I'm starting a new work. Pretty happy about that, it's going to be something I really hoped would become true. The sad thing is that it's going to be time consuming, so I have to reorganize and I'm sure I will be gaming less than before.
Katana Zero and Steamworld Quest for me. I'll probably pick up FFX at some point when it's on sale too
Why is everyone saying MK11 is a port. It’s not.
Everyone assuming every AAA not made by Nintendo is a port now.
@Quarth where do you get your imports from?
As this is my first Nintendo since the cube, I've still lots to buy from their first party. Can't wait to get Donkey Kong but I'm going to finish Mario odyssey then move onto Botw which should keep me going a while. Loving the system so far as I've only had it for 3 weeks, such a nostalgic feeling I'm getting playing Oddysey. I'm also in love with SMBro's deluxe and Kart8.
After being burnt out with open world games on the PS4 and generally not having time to play them, it's such a refreshing change to be able to just pick up and play for an hour here and there.
My only gripe with it is the price of games and one of my joycon analogues drift, other than that it's a 9/10 system
@jcvandan If one of the Swedish webstores, like Spelbutiken or Spel & Sånt, doesn't import it, I guess I'll turn to Amazon.
Was interested In cuphead until I realised it’s mainly just boss battles so doesn’t really appeal now...
@Swindla make sure you do get Donkey Kong, is awesome!
Also Mario + Rabbids is surprisingly brilliant too...
My definites are Labo and Cuphead. My “if I can justify the spending” or “hide the spending from the wife” are Mechstermination Force, Dragons Dogma and BoyB+G. My outside chance if reviews really well is MK11.
A surprisingly strong month
@GeeEmm
Every Warner Bros published game on Switch has been delayed by about a month in Europe. This extends not just to Mortal Kombat 11 but also to the Lego games (with Lego Movie 2 being the latest example).
Had FF X/X-2 on preorder since they announced the physical. Never got into FF XII, the gambit system confused me to be honest.
Who needs AAA 1st party games (excluding Labo) when the lineup is this good?
You're forgetting Hob by Panic Button aswell
Rebuying ace attorney trilogy coz I love ace attorney, and probably also swiping for dragon's dogma... But I still have 23 games in my backlog on Switch so I'm otherwise preoccupied anyway.
As I don't buy games to play at a later date I will only get the FF ones this month (and that is already a stretch as I could not possible finish FF X until XII launches...
But I also want darksiders, dragons dogma , cuphead, steamworld and katana.
Are darksiders or dragons dogma physical?
@KryptoniteKrunch no region lock, so what's the matter?
Only Labo VR-Kit and Cuphead for me. I have decided to strip down my purchases of Switch games to those I REALLY are interested in. Sooo many games I bought and barely played at all. 😔
@Swindla Donkey Kong is ace. Hard ace! Your left JoyCon is still under warranty so you could send it in for repair. Better still check the returns policy from seller. May be able to get it swapped. Also, have you tried resetting and updating it in settings?
@nintendolie Metroid 4 was Metroid Fusion
A lot of remakes or ports there
I really wish Nintendo would have a console where all the new games can release inline with other consoles. Hopefully the Switch Pro this year.
@beazlen1 thanks I'll try and get it repaired
Dragons Dogma for me. Cuphead and My Time at Portia will also be on the list.
Hob is also releasing, Ace Attorney I've never played, not sure whether I would be interested in them, but with Dragons Dogma, that game is big enough to keep my attention for a while.
May also consider Katana Zero as well. Also have Yoshi today as well, which I know isn't April, but it's still in close proximity to other games.
Super Dragonball Heroes?!
Alex, I really hope you WILL take the time to enjoy the original Phoenix Wright trilogy. The localization is A+, the games are hilarious by themselves, and you'll finally be able to understand all the memes. You owe it to yourself!
Only game on the list that I'm interested in is ffxii the zodiac age
Starting with Yoshi today it would seem the proverbial floodgates have been opened, holy crap that's a lot of fantastic games coming in a short amount of time
@Gen0neD Hey thanks for that in depth reply! To be honest, I never got into Dark Souls as the controls put me off. The game itself isn't difficult, but the controls are so clunky which makes it pseudo-difficult. Sekiro on the other hand has near immaculate controls and actual difficulty, which I can get behind.
That tangent aside, I'll be adding Dragon's Dogma to my wish list, and wait for a sale. Too many games, so little time and money! But your experience with it does have me intrigued to give it a whirl when those things allow.
Oh well, RIP bye2 wallet..
@Swindla good luck! Btw the pro controller is so so comfortable and has better sticks. I’d highly recommend purchasing one if you haven’t got one already.
Ace Attorney, Hob, Mechstermination Force, Steamworld Quest and Boxboy on the likely list for me. Dragons Dogma is a possible as well.
What an excellent month. Especially as there’s more than listed here. Something for everyone hopefully.
Some decent looking bits and bobs there. Cuphead looks like it will end up in my pile - I loved Gunstar Heroes and Metal Slug and I like the old cartoon aesthetic as well, there's some great characters in there, so I reckon that's got my name on it.
WOW what a strong month!
@beazlen1 Cheers dude, I do have a pro controller. I love it
Right on my friend. What I said was a BIT much, but it’s a game that brought me back to gaming and it laid the ground work for giving many other games, that I would have normally passed over, a chance and subsequently - ended up liking. If you ever play it, here’s hoping it grabs your attention. Take care 👍🏾
@Nerdfather1 Looking forward to Dragons Dogma as I had never heard of it before the Switch announcement. Waiting for a review but glad to hear it's a good one!
Mostly old ports, as per usual - but at least better ones.
Switch could be the ultimate console but it's in dire need of fresh third party AAA games to stay relevant. (Thank Raiden for the new Mortal Kombat at least!)
@Ryu_Niiyama Only if I get twice as much money back in return later!
My Time at Portia
Cuphead
Katana zero
Steamworld quest
Boxboy and girl
Wow that’s a great month, probably just cuphead for me though
A strong month, that's for sure....
I was going to get Dragonball Heroes World Mission but I’ve decided to wait on that one and pick it up some time in the future. I’m definitely getting My Time at Portia and Dragon’s Dogma and I’ll most likely get Labo VR. I may import the physical version of Phoenix Wright but maybe not because I already own those games on the DS. Lots of games in April!
I’ll wait for Katana Zero reviews to surface and then pick it up if it sounds worth it. Not going to double dip on Cuphead or DD. There are too many other games coming down the pipe.
@MrBlacky Same here, I'm still trying to complete all the switch games I purchased last year that I didn't really play. So far i've bought 1 new game this year, and the labo vr will probably be my second.
So I am the only one getting "Way of the passive fist"
@Quarth I ended up buying it digitally. Not worth paying 80% more just for the cartridge. I do prefer cartridge but usually because it's cheaper than digital with Nintendo games!
@jcvandan Yeah, if it's a lot cheaper, then it might be wiser to get it digitally.
