Re: Video: GoldenEye 007 Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison (Switch & N64)

jcvandan

@Serpenterror this is partly true, N64 ran at 240p which is half of what a CRT could actually output. So it definitely looks better, but not amazing. Also the N64 didn't have RGB output which meant you had to use S-Video, resulting in a very poor image compared to some other consoles. Gamecube/Dreamcast actually output 480p over RGB and they provide the best possible image on a CRT (which is better than some Switch games in handheld mode lolz). Or for pixel graphics a Mega Drive outputting 240p over RGB will look great on a CRT.

This looks terrible, the world looks completely barren. If they're going to make an open world game then you need to make the world a pleasure to roam around in or it'll fail. It doesn't need high resolution textures or anything, just plenty of variety and an interesting world. This is one thing that MH: Rise did well, it was graphically dreadful but at least the areas had interesting terrain.

Re: Review: LEGO Marvel Super Heroes - Still One Of The Best Lego Games

@Diogmites I'm with you, they are mindless but strangely infuriating. The solution to everything is 'go here and press this button', but sometimes it's really not obvious where you have to go. My little boy likes them so I play them with him sometimes but I just end up totally frustrated by them. Horrible, awful, games.

Re: Random: Did You Know Link Can Ride On Giant Barrels In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild?

Things like this illustrate how stagnant the old 3d zeldas now seem in comparison. The more time goes on the more I appreciate what they did with BOTW. It is literally the only open world game I've ever played that fully realised the potential of the genre. All the (many) others I've played start off really well but soon come to resemble the theme park and the illusion of the world falls away. BOTW sustains that illusion of being a real place through to the end. If it wasn't for the pesky weapon breakage it would likely be my fav game of all time.

Re: Random: Another Fan Takes A Crack At Redesigning Switch's User Interface

@Crockin what about if you have large amount of games? I'd like to be able to have an 'Unplayed' folder, or perhaps I'm in a mood for some retro fun and I want to go to my 'Arcade' folder instead of having to browse through a massive grid of hundreds of games. The current UI is very poor if you have a lot of games and you don't know what you want to play.

Re: Apex Legends Switch Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed

Great fun this game. I'm playing it on PS5 so zero chance of me playing it on Switch even with portability, but if it's people's only way to play it I highly recommend it. It's a good one if you're not great at shooters and you are playing with friends as you can spend a lot of time in game being stealthy and just having a laugh on voice chat with your buddies looting buildings.

Re: Gallery: Nintendo Website Shares Brand New Screenshots Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected

@Xeno_Emblem by that I just mean that is uses all the worst sort of tropes that you find in anime. Personally I find anime is similar to western fantasy & western comics in that a large portion of it is trash but there's a percentage of stuff at the top which is excellent. I didn't mean to imply that all anime is ridiculous, but surely any fan can admit that a lot of it is absolutely ridiculous, just as a fantasy fiction fan I admit that the majority of that is. P.s. cheers for noticing the beard!

Re: Gallery: Nintendo Website Shares Brand New Screenshots Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected

@mazzel no it obviously looks better than a Wii game but there was a digital foundry video about X2 and they did say that in handheld it was dropping to standard def, and it was horribly noticeable in handheld. Not so bad on the TV.

And yeah I thought the story was a bit creepy, plus I found as the game wore on it became convoluted and I had no idea what was going on. Plus there were portions of the game where every few mins gameplay was being intterupted with cut-scenes which really wound me up. I'll prob pick up this one though when the price drops a little.

Re: Gallery: Nintendo Website Shares Brand New Screenshots Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected

@mazzel XC2. I just didn't like the fact it ran at about 480p (Wii resolution) in the big areas, and also the weird anti-aliasing artifacts around the characters. It was just too ambitious for the Switch. I think if they had made some compromises in other areas such as textures it would have been much better. I still put 60 odd hours into the game though, and I enjoyed it on the whole (apart from the ridiculous anime storyline).

Re: Witcher 3 Switch Dev Saber Interactive Is Co-Developing Crysis On Switch

jcvandan

People have been saying that Crysis was just a game that looked good, but it's actually a really brilliant sandbox shooter. The open levels, range of weapons, and cool abilities, makes for a lot of ways to approach combat. Imagine the enemy bases in Far Cry 3 on steroids. I remember it very fondly and will 100% be picking this up (not on Switch if we're still in lockdown though, PS4 Pro is too tempting).

Re: Poll: Nintendo Labo VR Celebrates Its First Anniversary, Are You Still Using Your Toy-Con VR Goggles?

@JayJ me too I think it's pretty bad, I had an initial wow when I used it then ever since it's been gathering dust because every time I use it I have tracking issues and then when I finally get it working I just think holy crap it looks awful, then after 10 minutes I feel horrendously sick! I've actually just packed it all up to sell the whole kit to go towards my PS5 fund.

Re: Controversial "Adults Only" Murder Simulator Hatred Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

jcvandan

@LavaTwilight surely you can see the difference between games that use extreme violence as a tool to say something interesting and a game like this which is just extremist trolling. You can still have principles and say you don't like violence (nothing wrong with that), but appreciate the differences between the 2. It's sort of like the difference between torture porn movies and war movies.

Re: Feature: 6 Things My Three-Year-Old Taught Me About Video Games, Via Animal Crossing

jcvandan

I feel your pain/joy. This is the first game me and and my 3 year old have properly played together. There's been highs (he actually jumped up and fist pumped the first time we used the vaulting pole) and lows (he went round digging about a hundred holes I had to go and full in). It's been a great experience though and I agree with everything you've said, it's also taught me that I take so much for granted as a seasoned gamer!

Re: Hands On: Dipping Into Island Life In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

jcvandan

@PacificNorthBC no I haven't actually that's a good call. It's just been 2d platformers so far. NSMB is good as they have the little rabbit character that can't be hurt by enemies. Hollow Knight was something else he really liked. Any game where you have to control the camera is a no as he just immediately points it at the floor and needs me to move it. I agree though it's going to be great when we can properly play something together (I don't think I was finishing games till I was almost 10 though so will be a while).

Re: Saber Interactive Removes All References From Social Media About Its Next Witcher 3 Update

jcvandan

I downloaded this on 3g yesterday on the train on my way home. Well worth using all my allowance, as far as I can see with everything turned off (and keeping foliage as high) it seems to be pretty consistently sticking at or near 720p in handheld. The difference is like night and day, I can't believe the decision was made to keep these graphic options on initially and get a blurry picture as the trade off. Seems crazy to me. Post processing effects are pretty much irrelevant when you're playing the game, however a blurry picture is actually noticable while playing. I kept feeling like my eyes were losing focus when playing the game previously.

Re: Review: Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Complete Edition - This Anime Adaptation Misses The Target

jcvandan

@AlternateButtons if it had child rape in it, would you consider it worth mentioning? Would that be virtue signalling? I'm guessing you think that is horrible and isn't OK to put in a game (at least not in a way to just provide entertainment). Well the thing is, people have different levels of what is horrible and where they draw the line. The person who wrote this article likely feels that misogyny shouldn't be present in games, so they mentioned it. I agree that virtue signalling is a thing, but you also have to realise that everybody has different views and they're entitle to comment on it if they see something they don't like, it doesn't make automatically make them an SJW.
