Re: Mario Bros. to Kick Off 'Arcade Archives' Range on Nintendo Switch

james_squared

@Tempestryke Yes, these are different versions and I think that'll be great and I look forward to the Mario Bros. game. And, yes, I know some people will triple and quadruple and quintuple dip. But, these are the more dedicated users. I think for many gamers, they might be now willing to buy the NES Classic and SNES Classic and maybe even a Switch rather than just a Switch with a few VC titles. Just my thoughts.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

james_squared

@bannedin60second I certainly wouldn't be that harsh on the WiiU as I'm a big fan and have had lots of fun playing couch multiplayer games with it. I think it's a good console. Truly innovative in its use of the two screens giving multiple players a different perspective on the same game (e.g., Nintendo Land, LEGO Marvel Superheroes). This is achieved with only one console. Now, I'll need to buy another Switch to do this. That might have to wait a bit, however.

Also, the WiiU was great for its second screen although not utilized well. Perhaps a flawed concept? Not too sure, but it was a welcome addition in some games and utilized very well with ZombiU. That was the game that tempted me to buy a WiiU.

The Switch is a superior machine in its versatility. The library isn't the most expansive right now, but we'll get there. Perhaps my only concern with the machine is what new innovations it will bring to the market...other than its hybrid nature. Maybe that's enough?

But, we are off topic a big here. I should get back to work and/or actually answer the question at hand or @AlexOlney might have to chime in again.

Re: Feature: The Switch Report - Six Months of Nintendo's Hybrid System

james_squared

It's a good system, but seems very overhyped and overrated at this point in time.

Not a lot of new games, but I suppose that is normal for a new system although I had hoped for a bit more six months in (although I've only had a Switch for about a month). Maybe after the developers catch up as I'm sure several were hesitant to see how sales went.

Doesn't seem to be much innovation on the Switch. Snipperclips is great, but seems like a Wii game. I haven't tried Arms or 1-2-Switch, however. Zelda is an awesome game, but seems to have been developed mostly for the WiiU.

The OS doesn't seem to be there for much of anything. I know it's supposed to be a gaming system, but a lot of people would like it to be more--at the very least it should have Netflix.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how things go in the next six months.

Re: Editorial: Mandatory Memory Cards for Switch Retail Games is a Messy Solution

james_squared

I don't have a microSD card for my Switch, but I'm not buying this basketball game anyway so it's all good for me...for now.

But, yes, it does seems somewhat unnecessary nowadays to do this to consumers, but whatcha gonna do? Complaining won't change anything with Nintendo here. They do what they want and what makes sense for them. Just an "evil corporation" like all the others.

I wonder what the complaining would have been like if 2K put the game on two carts? Hopefully less. I remember playing Dragon's Lair on the Amiga and I think that was 8 disks!

So, yeah, it'll cost a few more bucks here and there to enjoy the Switch. Oh well. Oh, that reminds me, I wonder how much the online service will be in CAD? I wonder if I'll have to buy two memberships as there are two people here that use the Switch with separate Nintendo Accounts?

Re: Review: Severed (Switch eShop)

james_squared

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Why do you feel the need to buy it on the Switch? Is it better than the Wii U version? Is your old version broken? The developer certainly isn't forcing you to purchase the similar version again. I just don't get the complaining here.

I have decided to not purchase Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, LEGO City Undercover, or Rayman Legends: Definite Edition for the Switch because I don't see the added value of those games as I already have very similar editions on the Wii U. They are all great games, however.

I did purchase Twilight Princess HD on Wii U even though I have a similar version for the Wii. I also purchased Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ on Switch even though I have a similar version on the Wii U. I even purchased Excite Bike, Mario Bros., Ghosts 'n' Goblins, and a few other VC titles on Wii U even though I had played these more than enough on ye olde NES back in the 1980s. My daughter purchased Minecraft on the Mac, but not for Wii U. She did, however, purchase it for the Switch.

Anyway, I'm sure there are millions of other examples where people have made up their own mind about buying a similar (even identical) item for various reasons. I'm amazed at how people can use benefit-cost-analysis all by themselves.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

james_squared

I'm in no rush to get this console at all. I was sort of on the fence before, but at the $400 price point, I just don't think so. Even a PS4 Pro 1TB with no games is $500. That's what I would have to pay for a Switch and a big micro SD card. I could get a PS4 with a few games for less than the price of a Switch.

Mind you, knowing Nintendo, I won't even be able to find a pre-order or even get a console when it arrives anyway. I've got better things to do with my time then bust my hump looking for a console that seems terribly priced in this market. I think I can do just fine with the WiiU or spend my discretionary income on a Sony product (and I cannot stand Sony products).

Re: Review: Super Mario Run (Mobile)

james_squared

I finally downloaded this title and I must say that it's actually pretty good. I've fiddled through the first three levels of World 1 and even went back and replayed them couple of times to get more coins. I've tried the Toad Rally a few times as well. I even spent some coins making my kingdom look a bit nicer.

I'm not too sure it's worth the $14 or not, but the game does look pretty nice and there does seem to be a lot of replay value for those that like to get more and more and more and more and more coins.

Re: Editorial: As Games Jump to Nintendo Switch We See How Quickly the Industry Moves On

james_squared

@SharkAttackU I'm very tempted to do that as well. I just want a console. I have no use or desire to have a portable console. I have a 3DS so I can play Zelda games and, you guessed it, Animal Crossing. The only reasons the 3DS ever comes with me is so that I can get play coins while walking to work. I earned 2500 steps today in the lovely -17C this morning. I see it's warmed up to -13C.

I'm a big fan of the WiiU and I really like its local multiplayer. If the Switch can deliver in that aspect, then I'll consider it.

Re: Poll: The Wii U is Four Years Old, But What Is Its Legacy?

james_squared

It's not about the console, but about the memories that the console helps to foster. For my daughter and I we had lots of fun playing games cooperatively such as NintendoLand, the Pikmin 3 DLC, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and Hyrule Warriors.

This cooperative gameplay was greatly enhanced by having a separate screen giving each of us our own unique perspective on the game, but still playing together. I believe this is very important for a less skilled and younger game player as she never felt that she was slowing me down or that I was dragging her along--she could work at her own pace and ask for help if she needed or offer help when I needed.

I think the asynchronous gameplay was simply fantastic and a great feature that, unfortunately, never really captured the casual user or was marketed as well as it could have been with those party games. It also felt truly innovative in an industry that often seems more interested in milking its cash cows as much as possible.
