Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 9th)

For me, I'm still going with Star Ocean The Second Story R. Unfortunately, I caught COVID, which you would think would give me more time to play the game, but I don't like playing games while I'm coughing my guts up. A little PSA for anyone looking at buying this game; please do the sidequests. They take up more than half of the actual gameplay. Once I'm done, I'm moving onto Persona 5 Strikers as my Christmas game. I've been avoiding spoilers, but it is impossible not to get hyped by the game's music...

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Worst Parts Of Your Favourite Games?

The prison section in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. My lord is it horrible. You're tempted with thinking it will be good because Cadensia is by far the most memorable region, and you're about to go to Agnus Castle, with a quick sidequest at the prison. But no. Not only does Ghondor make the worst first impression that I've ever seen (she gets better though), you have to do 3 stupid fetch quests that are blatant time wasters. What makes it even worse is that the ensuing battle and story sequences right after are the best parts of the game. So it's essentially a piece of rotten meat inbetween the 2 best slices of bread you've ever had. Bizzare.

I finally got around to Star Ocean The Second Story R! About 6 hours in, and absolutely love it. I haven’t found it as easy as the reviews made it out to be (I’ve found dodging a bit tricky), but the combat is amazing. The story isn’t amazing, nor very thought provoking, but does nothing wrong. Characters are cool. The only thing is, I don’t really understand the Private Action system. You have to interrupt the flow of the game going into a seperate mode to see certain story sequences. Why aren’t they just integrated normally? I feel like there’s a way to make it flow better.

Re: Another Code: Recollection

It feels sad how this game has essentially been forgotten. There hasn’t been any trailers since the reveal, and I’ve seen no one talk about this game. I might pick it up at a cheap price if the reviews are good. Not paying full price for what are essentially DS/Wii visual novels.

My copy of Star Ocean 2 still hasn't arrived yet. I got my copy from Rarewaves, and last time I bought from them the delivery was extremely quick, so I'm a little bit disappointed. I guess this is what happens when you live in Australia! I'm just glad I got one, since it seems Square Enix underestimated the game's popularity.

My copy of Star Ocean 2 is in the mail right now! Played a little bit of the demo, know almost nothing about the game, but I'm pretty excited for it, especially considering it's out of stock almost everywhere...

To me, 2 screens on a system is a very cool gimmick, but that's sort how I see it. A gimmick. I've appreciated with how the Nintendo Switch utilizes its gimmick. Changing from the TV to handheld mode doesn't affect the gameplay in any way, and there's very few games that only play in 1 mode. It almost makes a gameplay experience almost more 'pure' in a way. The Nintendo Switch is selling you on its awesome games, not a marketing thing.

I finally finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3, doing around half of the optional hero quests, finishing at a bit under 70 hours. I feel quite torn on the game, almost everything about it is amazing (Moebius aren't the best villains but not bad), however, this is my first Xenoblade game. I really do not understand the combat. I didn't find it overwhelming, it's just I don't understand it from a game design perspective. It's not really an action RPG, since you can't dodge attacks in a traditional sense, and it's certainly not a turn based one either, and because there's no TP or usable items in battle, you basically start every battle at the same playing field. It sounds like a good thing on paper, but it sort of made everything feel a little inconsequential. Battles felt like it was just a test of having good party composition and a high level. And when you get the Lucky Seven, battles are so easy it's almost not even worth your time. I set Noah's class to Ethel's, so I can do a back attack, a side attack to charge up Lucky Seven, with Mio's fast recharge circle to win almost instantly. I hope the next Xeno game is different, because it is obvious these developers are amazing. Onto Star Ocean 2!

I've now reached the City in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. As an Australian, not gonna lie, Monica's voice is a little irritating to me. It's really, really exaggerated. Or maybe we all sound like that, and I can't tell. Apart from that, I'm enjoying this game. I have found it so annoying how half the time when I enter battles where you get to pick a side, if you quickly swap to another character it kicks you out of the battle, and you have to walk really far away, then back again to restart.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I really believe "you must play every single Trails game before this one!". I feel like its a bit of an exaggeration. As long as the visuals look okay on Switch, I'm looking forward to this one.

Edit: I just finished the first Trails in the Sky and now I understand. Haha

I'm still occupied with Xenoblade Chronicles 3, now starting Chapter 5. Once I'm done, I'm looking forward to this game. I really want to be excited about Super Mario RPG, but a lot of the animations look really stiff, and it seems there's no voice acting at all, not even grunts or anything. It looks good but Star Ocean 2 is what I feel like I'm looking for. And with Persona 5 Tactica, I want to complete Strikers first.

Still going through Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and boy I am so mixed on this game. This is like the highest quality game I've ever played that I don't really like. The story still hasn't really grabbed me, and it's a shame how most conversations boil down to one character observing a personality trait of another character, the charactering saying it's not big deal, and then the character says no it is! And a lot of the long cutscenes have no music, making them feel pretty dry in my opinion. The combat is also this bizarre middle ground where its not slow enough to be that strategic, yet not skill based enough because this game doesn't even have a dodge button. It's absolutely bizarre, I appreciate experimentation in games but this is just so weird that I don't think I've ever seen a game like this. Maybe I'll give Final Fantasy 12 a go one day since I heard it's sorta similar. Final Fantasy 7 Remake also is similar where it's action but you can use commands like a turn based game. I must admit the game does run incredibly well for Switch and looks amazing. I understand the appeal to a degree but don't think it's my thing. And I'm pretty sure Consul J is maybe the first time I've ever had to lower the difficulty in a game since you can only grind on 2 enemies in that area.

Right now I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I'm not sure if I'm loving it, but it's getting better as I go on. I hated the combat but once I unlocked the ability to swap characters it all made sense. I think the story takes itself a little too seriously, yet the writing feels quite dumbed down at the same time. And I don't love any of the characters. Mio and Lanz seem the best so far. I'll probably finish it, but maybe not all the side quests. Looking forward to Star Ocean 2 when it comes out.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

imadeanaccount

personally i was looking for an rpg, super mario ones look kinda cute but it seems like they have little strategy, and the ones on showcase look very generic and seem to lack creativity (ill have to see more though). another code grabbed my attention but i heard that the game was really designed around the capabilities of the ds so i hope it makes the jump to the switch smoothly.

gotta be honest, it seems like the switch is running out of steam. most current releases by nintendo after tears of the kingdom, pikmin 4 and mario wonder seem very low effort/budget. do they really deserve praise for making these mario rpg remakes? they couldn't have been that hard to make and probably cost nothing in the grand scheme of things.
