As you might recall, Capcom released Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on the Switch and PC a few weeks ago.
So, how did it go? According to an update via social media, the Japanese publisher and developer has already shipped a combined total of more than one million units worldwide. And yes, it exceeded the sales of the original. To celebrate, it released some special artwork:
Wings of Ruin 2 also topped the charts in Japan in its first week. Oh, and if you're wondering, Monster Hunter Rise shipped over four million units in just the opening weekend.
If you haven't already given the new Monster Hunter Stories game a go, there's a free trial available on the Switch eShop - you can even transfer your progress across to the full game. It's been described as a great introduction to the Monster Hunter franchise. Check out our full review for more information.

That's impressive, i didn't get this but i got Rise, still playing that. I may buy this later.
I really hope that's well enough for the series to get a third entry.
By comparison, Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS shipped ~400,000 copies lifetime.
That big Capcom data leak from last year revealed that they expected Monster Hunter Stories 2 to ship 1.3 million copies in its first year, so they are going to blow past that forecast.
Shame the frame rate is terrible outside of the demo area.
This deserves to sell way more copies. Awesome little game.
So this doesn't include digital sales, yeah? I'm guessing it's 1 million for pc and Switch combined
I enjoy stories much more than rise. By a fair way
And of course there are already idiots on Twitter proclaiming that this is really low sales. -_-
@Yodalovesu
It includes retail shipments + digital sales.
Well deserved. Game is alot of fun. Im not a fan of regular Monster hunter games, but stories is my cup of tea.
Whoa that's insane, especially by JRPG standards! I've been enjoying the game thus far, I just wish I had more time to play it!
Nice! I'll pick it up on PC at some point.
It’s a really good game. I am enjoying it now. I’m not getting any other game until I beat this one. Get it if you like JRPGs.. I’ve seen a few frame rate hiccups. Big deal. I feel like Breath of the Wild had more. It doesn’t really effect the game play. If you’re a frame rate guy, why do you even own switch?
@aunaste Actually, the frame rate isn't that bad outside a few cases. I believe even the framerate in the first area is improved from what it was in the demo.. or at least it feels that way.
Lol I think I was seeing folks in other articles saying how this was selling poorly. 1M units in what 2 weeks(?) is great.
Just finished it yesterday, wonderful game, well deserved
I will pick this game up in the future. However, it had the misfortune of releasing in a very busy Switch month. I've had to make a few choices, and this didn't quite make the cut. Really wish it didn't release the same week as Ys IX lol.
Once again another great 3rd party game for the switch. So glad for this game.
@River3636
To be fair, this is a series that has generally been focused on Nintendo consoles, so it's expected that the developers would know to properly make a game for the Switch's hardware. I can't help but blame the developers again for screwing this up.
Will be nice to pick this up on the steam deck for some crisp 60 FPS action, Muhahaha!!
But seriously though, framerate really doesn't matter that much in JRPGS, even though that one area in Disgaea 6 really started to get on my nerves. Makes my wonder how Rise could be so smooth and yet this one struggles.
Nice! I'm also going to pick this up later on for sure, I really liked the demo. It won't reach th numbers of Rise, but I bet it can achieve several millions, if they managed well.
First of all, they need to get rid of those annoying framerate issues on Switch. Many users are holding up for that. After seeing Rise, we know Capcom can do anything!
@River3636 Heheh, I can't help but be eternally grateful that I'm not a "frame rate guy" cos its hard to imagine anything sadder.
I mean, if it's something that absolutely impacts on gameplay then sure that's annoying and I'd probably stop playing, but I think the last time I really noticed anything like that was back in the PS2 era.
If anything I'm almost the opposite these days: e.g. have sunk 140+ hours into BotW and can't remember a single moment in that time where I went, "Woah! Wha happen? Frame rate bad!" or indeed noticed anything at all out of the ordinary that pulled me out of the action. To the point where I sometimes wonder, reading all the moaning on the web, did I somehow end up with a magic Switch that never slows down... Cos I don't think I've ever really noticed anything in things like Hyrule Warriors either, where it was noticeable enough to affect my immersion in the game.
@ATaco The Steam version uses the dreaded Denuvo DRM which isn't compatible with SteamOS. Like at all. So unless you install Windows on it, it won't be coming to the Steam Deck.
Glad this has done well it’s a great game so far from what I’ve played.
Well deserved. Its a great game imo 😊
This one's in my games to get list, glad it's doing well.
I'm very happy that I bought this game. Got through to the endgame just a few days ago and there's so much post game content to sink your teeth into. I've not even begun to scratch the surface regarding co-op and PVP as well so I'll have plenty to keep me going.
this might be me being bias but MH Stories 2 should be selling way more than 1 million copies the game is that good
Great game. I absolutely love the presentation of this game, from art style to battle animations. Pretty much what many folks wanted from SwSh but in a tropics setting.
Truly remarkable, wonderful game. If you're looking at the frame rate while playing, you are doing it wrong.
@CivilMadman same, I can think of exactly zero times that frame rates truly affected my enjoyment of a game. Let alone where I just couldn't play it.
@westman98 i heard MH Stories on 3DS only sold around 300,000 copies lifetime sales
@ModdedInkling So they get a patch. Are there some games on the switch that are abomination when it comes to frame rate? Yes. Is this one of them. No way close. Did they screw up? No fricken way. Not by my standards. I am playing this game nonstop and having the best time. Frame rate guys take note:
There is more to games than a rate of frame.
Just stop and enjoy 😊
Otherwise you become lame 😒.
I had a hunch right from the reveal trailer that this game was going to be something special and I get the feeling that Capcom knew it too. It's not perfect by any stretch but I get the feeling that the developers really poured their hearts into this one. It really does deserve to sell well.
@CivilMadman I believe you said it best.
I am like ….Frame rate guys be like… but I can see through the grass. I need to stop having fun and not play this game.
@River3636
See, this is the kind of mentality I want everyone else to have. People are so spoiled by the other consoles nowadays.
@River3636 @IronMan30 @CivilMadman I bet they pay attention to the frame rate numbers on the screen more than the game they’re playing. Never had any issues on the Switch that stopped me from enjoying it.
This is good news and much better then the first game, yes its not going to get the numbers of the main series but then i don't think Capcom ever expected it too.
It's next on my queue after I finish Ys IX
Wait, there's already a Wings of Ruin 2??
Loving it so far! I only wish the frame rate was better. It goes from 60fps to like 15 all the time.
Glad for it's success. I did think releasing it just a week before Skyward Sword HD was a bad move but it's sold well regardless it seems. Great stuff...
Slight frame rate issues aside this is the kind of third party support the Switch needs.
@westman98 you sure? I thought "shipped" refers to the number of physical copies sent to retailers..?
Sorry to doubt, it's just when I clicked on the article about MH Rise's sales just now that's the explanation they provided
@KBuckley27
It sold just over 300,000 copies in Japan alone.
@Yodalovesu
Shipped always means retail shipments + digital sales. No company only reports their retail shipments in this day and age as digital sales account for a huge part of the industry's overall sales.
Big numbers for a game I couldn't find at our local Gamestop or Walmart at release day. xP But nice, it's a pretty great game.
I am glad to see this is doing well! I bought the first game on 3DS last year and really enjoyed it. I am currently playing through this one and it is great!
I'm having a lot of fun with it. If you enjoy monster collecting games and turn based combat, please give the demo a try
The games an absolute blast, I've been having so much fun with the cycle of battles, egg hunting, and equipment building. Glad to see this game doing well
This is easily one of the best turn based games I've played in years. It's a better Pokemon all away around. Game freak should take notes. I'm glad this game is doing well, it deserves every bit of praise. I just hope they improve the framerate though
Somebody help me out here please, does this game tie into the first one at all in a way that would require prior knowledge in order to actually get the story here?
