It's been long documented that Metroid and Kid Icarus were closely developed. They share the same engine, many of the same staff members and were released within the same time period - hence why people call them sister games. What's lesser known however is The Legend of Zelda had a sibling of its own. Together these four games headlined the launch window of the Famicom Disc System. Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda...and The Mysterious Murasame Castle.
There's a high chance you haven't heard of this title as its Western release didn't come around until 2014 on the 3DS Virtual Console but all this time a game using the same framework as Zelda has been thriving on the Famicom. Murasame Castle introduced Japanese players to Takamaru, a character Western players will likely recognise as an Assist Trophy starting with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS.
Despite domestic success selling around 660,000 units, The Mysterious Murasame Castle is a rare first party headliner not to receive a sequel. Despite this, Takamaru still made apperances over the years. He was a primary character in 2008's Japan exclusive Captain Rainbow (where he has a crush on Crazy Tracy from Link's Awakening - it's weird), it also kickstarted Nintendo's crossovers with the Musou series with a Murasame Castle mode in Samurai Warriors 3. Though it must be said most Nintendo fans likely know the franchise as "the Ninja game from Nintendo Land" where it starred alongside Nintendo's most prominent franchises.
So join us as we take a deep dive into what makes The Mysterious Muasame Castle one of the Famicom's best games, its close ties to Zelda and the legacy its left over the years.

I only know it from the Nintendo Land mini game. It’s strange in hindsight they’d use such an obscure and old game rather than another property.
Kinda wanted to try it on 3DS back then. Maybe I still will...
I would say that the true "sister game" to Zelda is Rambo for the NES. For people who don't know, "The Adventures of link" is literally a Japanese reskin of that game with a different over world.

Only know this guy from Smash, learnt so much gaming history thanks to Smash Bros
Strange that Nintendo tries to market this guy and game during the Wii and Wii U era but then acted like he never existed after it ended.
Together these four games headlined the launch window of the Famicom Disc System. These were; Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda...and The Mysterious Murasame Castle.
That's quite the launch release output. It's almost as if these precocious platform holders executed these feats because they didn't know any better (i.e. they didn't have any more experienced people around to tell them how difficult it was). This puts modern launch window releases into perspective...
I just know it as that obnoxious thing that pops up in Mario Maker 2 courses
@HeadPirate Rambo was actually released almost a year after Zelda II.
Is that the ninja from that one rhythm heaven mini game, where you cut the shadow monsters? Cause it really looks like it.
Was hoping this was an announcement for the Switch so I could dust the thing off, but... of course not.
@HeadPirate I remember playing Rambo back in the day and realizing that it was somehow very closely related to Zelda 2. Rambo released later and I wouldn't say either is a "reskin" (and there is no overworld in Rambo), but the engine for gameplay is definitely the same with all the same quirks and many exact gameplay elements.
I wonder if anyone know the backstory on this? A simple search didn't find an explanation.
@HeadPirate
Interesting take on it.
This game is in desperate need of a revival!
@Zidentia Thanks! So little info, though! One says it "borrows heavily" from Zelda 2, but... I would suggest a large portion of the code is shared. I wonder if it was reverse engineered or stolen, or more generously, sold to a separate company. It seems Nintendo EAD developed Zelda 2 and Rambo came out much later in the year. Would love to see someone investigate this.
I like the looks of this game now and I want to play it! When I get some time I think I will track down a way to do so. Why not release it on Switch, Nintendo?
It's interesting to me that it could be in a genre that their other major IP does not overlap with, too. Could be a fun candidate for a brand new take, for sure.
I always thought Zelda's "sibling" was Star Tropics
This game is incredibly difficult, and not very fun in my opinion.
Great video! Looks awesome and I want to give it a try someday.
The Game Center CX episode on this game was great. I love that show in general but particularly for games like this - games that I wouldn't necessarily want to play for myself (because they are too hectic or difficult etc) but are really enjoyable to experience vicariously through Arino.
It is a pity that there was resistance to releasing games in the West if they were "too Japanese". It's understandable but we really were robbed of games like this (as well as the majority of the Goemon series and I think also some of the Kunio period-set games).
I got this game for the 3DS from the final round of Club Nintendo rewards. I qualified for the top rewards and my friend only had the lower tier, so I gifted him Animal Crossing New Leaf if he gave me this $5 title. And I was shocked by how similar it was to LoZ.
This belongs on the NES app right away! I’d pay for this one!
Seriously, Murasame is arguably as good as the original Zelda
@RCGamer I second that, glad someone gets it. THAT'S a game in desperate need of a revival.
@HeadPirate I would've said Battle of Olympus was more similar...but I wouldn't call any of them "sister games". As far as I know, they're all just Zelda II copycats.
Nintendo had so many good IPs they shun throughout the decades: Marasame Castle, Cruis'n, Wave Race, 1080, F-Zero, StarTropics, Star Fox, CluClu Land, Uniracer, Stunt Race, Ice Climber, Mach Rider, Endless Ocean, Sin and Punishment, Golden Sun, Drill Dozer, Mole Mania, Kid Icarus, Legendary Starfy, Geist, Eternal Darkness, Fatal Frame, Trace Memory, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Magical Starsign, Soma Bringer, Doshin the Giant, Custom Robo, Punch-Out!!, etc.
Played it two years ago (thanks to emulation, hey). Pretty fun, but crazy hard! Funny how people don't know this pretty important game.
@HeadPirate What the flock? A sister game at least should have been made by Nintendo. This is a clone.
I love this game. I played it to death on my 3DS, but couldn’t beat it. I wished they had also released this and 92 Recca (and others) on Wii U so I could play it on TV. It would be a nice surprise to play on Switch.
@RCGamer Mike Jones is Link’s redheaded stepbrother.
Hmm neat. I've never heard of it before. I've always considered Zelda's siblings to include StarTropics,Simon's Quest, Faxanadu and Crystalis.
@Asaki Perhaps Cousin Games?
What a terrific article- would love to see more like this.
