@Flashlink99 I fully agree. What always pisses me off (about human nature in general) is our "tribalism" mindset. Always taking sides and hoping for the other guy to fail.
CAN'T BOTH SYSTEMS CO-EXIST?!! Why do consumers start defending one corporation over another corporation? It's bizarre beyond words.
@Dog Even if we dont talk about power, theres no denying that there's a certain level of "cheapness" or greediness with this company for a while now.
Adding an additional 32GB of storage, for example, would have only cost them around $4-6 in expenses. But they still chose to give you only 32GB in modern times, as of 2017.
EA may be a tad lazy with Nintendo consoles, but Nintendo themselves also don't make matters any better with their constant penny-pinching habits.
P.S. Finally, the console's retail price wouldn't have necessarily been more expensive. Many companies sell their products at a loss, and Nintendo could very easily be one of them (thanks to their INSANE amount of game sales, peripheral sales, Nintendo Online Service subscriptions, and so on). But they prefer to make a profit from every little thing without exceptions.
This is their right (as a for-profit company). But im just letting you know they have other options. More expensive manufacturing costs doesn't necessarily mean HAVING to sell the final product at a higher price. It's their choice.... at the expense of the consumer, sadly.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Yup. At the end of the day, Nintendo's awful business practices are mostly to blame for the endless gimped games and no-shows.
They can afford to put more power into their consoles (while selling them at a loss, or at least breaking even), but they choose not to do so. All in the name of shareholders and greed.
@earthinheritor This is a misconception. The crash was mostly in America, plus several computer games were actually thriving at the time (despite the crash).
Sooner or later, other computer games would have surfaced and slowly restored the industry (games with the same quality as King's Quest and Pac Man, for example, in addition to better management) — whether Nintendo were present or not.
@caseyyt13 I honestly rather not see these notable games at all. Look at Apex Legends and titles like Outer Worlds; just because something can technically be ported to the Switch, it doesn't mean it should be.
In the end, many of these games just become infamous due to the obvious hardware limitations and framerates.
Until Nintendo changes their business model (a bit more RAM wouldn't have hurt the console, for example), most notable titles are better off not being ported at all.
@HamatoYoshi Considering that 8 out of 10 big-budget titles cannot run on Switch, i wouldn't say "we don't need a new model." Sure, the portable concept is amazing.... But a newer model is definitely in order.
So many games are just missing, only coming out on other consoles. That cannot be ignored.
@SoIDecidedTo They should release something adequately powerful at $349 or $379, take a loss from every console sold, but make up the money through everything else (their online service, peripherals, their MASSIVE software sales, etc).
Side note: Im not asking for PS5 quality, but at least Xbox One or PS4 Pro.
The above is perfectly reasonable now in 2021, but sadly they're just not willing to take a loss, even though their software always sells in the millions upon millions of copies. This means that they'll keep releasing purposely-underpowered consoles just for the sake of "not taking a loss."
This, to me, is very short-sighted on their part. But that's just my opinion.
If they were to shift their mentality, they could theoretically gain a lot more market share — because now you have innovation + amazing AAA software from first AND third parties.
@Ludovsky And thats the main issue with Nintendo, right there. They want to turn a profit from everything without question.
Considering each video game sells millions of copies (without fail), in addition to accessory sales, in addition to their online service, this company should really focus on more competent hardware and just break even (or take a small loss).
This also opens the door to more AAA games because they have a better chance at running (remember, Nintendo also takes a small cut from every third-party game sold. This is something people often forget). I know powerful hardware does NOT guarantee more games, but at least it opens up the chances/greatly increases the odds.
But this is what happens when you're a publicly-traded corporation and are a tad too greedy. They limit the memory storage to 32GB in 2017, 4GB RAM, and so on. They follow a very penny-pinching strategy.
@Casual_Gamer95 Agreed. And thats the main drawback to releasing underpowered hardware...
It's much harder to release games alongside the other guys (and often impossible, considering so many games are always missing on all Nintendo consoles).
@Rypopo Judging by your first sentence, i assume you're dismissing this as a non-issue (or not a big deal).
The problem is, online shooters are only a fraction of the entire gaming industry. But what happens when most games (or more than half, at least) rely on the cloud exclusively? Thats the whole point.
Im actually hoping there's no Switch Pro and Nintendo just releases a full-blown Switch 2 sooner.
Releasing a Pro version means we'd have to wait for a "true upgrade" waaay too long. The current Switch is just too anemic at this point, and a Pro wouldn't be much of an improvement (from a performance standpoint).
@Yodalovesu You're missing the point. This issue would still exist even if the game was only sold for $5 - 10. Eshop is absolutely an issue at the moment, stop defending it so much.
Nintendo often focuses too much on things that hardly matter. The eShop needs priority and they know it. They just don't care because THEIR games don't suffer from sales.
Of course it got a 9 on this website..... Shocker. A 7 or 8 would be more deserving, but meh....this is called NintendoLife for a reason. Gotta appease the big boss and keep licking that boot.
@DanTee in all fairness, Casual_gamer does have a good point. Regardless of Nintendo's success, there's no denying their consoles could all use some stability or graphical improvements — even if they don't compete head-to-head with the other guys.
And you brought up another part of the problem: Nintendo gamers have come to only play first-party titles exactly **BECAUSE** Nintendo consoles lack that certain fidelity. So Nintendo stripped our choice to enjoy more games on their own consoles as a result of their decisions.
While they don't need to have the latest tech, im hoping future consoles can be less anemic to at least handle titles a bit better.
Good corporation overall, but yes, there's still much to learn in certain areas.
In the end, it's all about greed/higher profitability. They wanted to make $20 per title as opposed to $15 per title, hence the reason for leaving Mario Galaxy 2 out.
@Retro_Player_77 I was rather saddened by the whole presentation, seeing the vast majority of "modern, intensive / more impressive" titles skip the Switch — time and time again. Only the "smaller" of the bunch made it to the console.
@Grumblevolcano Then some 3rd parties are shocked when these games sell far fewer copies on Switch, considering many gamers played them elsewhere already (not all gamers, but many).
For example, at this point i've been just playing Doom Eternal elsewhere since portability is not too important for me, personally.
@Snatcher Definitely feel free to buy it (it is genuinely a good game), though your life status (and the unfamiliarity of a game) has very little to do with the point of this discussion.
@PALversusNTSC Keep in mind that your reply only focuses on the games' looks, all while ignoring performance issues. An objective fan should acknowledge both the pros and cons of a product, rather than excusing and justifying its shortcomings so blindly.
Regardless of the consoles' unit sales, the fact remains that many games were missing (on Wii) and are missing (on Switch) as a direct result of a lack of power. And the ones that DO release tend to suffer quite a bit — or the developers have to put in the extra time, effort, and resources to make them work halfway decent.
So, as i said on my original post: Nintendo consoles don't need to be on par with the other guys, but they can still put a tiny more effort into their consoles in certain areas.
But meh, nothing that can be done now, since the system is already out. Let's just hope their next console is a bit less anemic in certain places.
@Abes3 Which is yet another reason Nintendo should start putting more effort into their consoles. They don't need to be on par with the others (the Switch would probably melt anyway), but there's always little things they can improve upon.
Anyone who says the whole underpowered thing is "100% fine" is just fooling themselves. Many games are either late, they run/look like crap, or all of the above.
@Averagewriter This is only an issue if you make it an issue. It might be a sensitive date and all, but businesses shouldnt simply avoid that date like the plague either. This doesn't necessarily mean businesses are being disrespectful. That's just.......life, and life must go on.
And here are just some of the games released on that date (years prior)
Boundless (PS4)
Claws Of Furry (PS4)

@TG16_IS_BAE "Also keep in mind that in console sales, the prices are lower because they sell them at a loss and pick up the cost through subscriptions and their app stores."
And this, right here, is one of Nintendo's main issues with their chosen business model. They opted to make the console profitable from Day 1. They absolutely refused to lose a single dime, although they could have easily (at the very least) included 80GB storage if nothing else — even if it lowered their margins.
Their strategy is certainly a profitable way to do business, but it's not the best one nor the most consumer-friendly.
I always respected Amazon's model with Kindle. They famously stated that they weren't making profits from Kindle hardware sales at all (at least not initially), but rather from the software (e-books). This slow-burn strategy have helped Amazon dominate their industry.
More companies should opt for loses in some areas in favor of profiting later down the road with other accessories and subscription services, which is a huge win-win for everyone.
Sadly, at the end of the day, most companies answer to hungry and unreasonable investors who simply won't settle for a few millions, but rather many MANY millions.
@TG16_IS_BAE Meh, it's a fanboy thing. Some people can't seem to form reasonable and fairly intelligent opinions / comments. Extremely black and white, as you said.
@mesome713 GC failed in sales not due to strong raw power, but rather by other limitations and stiff competition at the time. Keep in mind that while the Cube exceeded in graphical areas, it reaaaally lacked behind in other, equally-important areas (mini discs, for example).
Not to mention everyone was going crazy over the PS2 and its native DVD drive. This whole thing really hurt the GameCube's bottom line.
Your comments are really starting to make you sound like you dont put much thought into things. You just seem to sort of publish the first thing that comes to your mind without much logic or without weighing things in objectively. So you should probably just stop acting like a fanboy and develop a more mature perspective first.
I love Nintendo and all, but im not blind to their unnecessary decisions.
@mesome713 To be fair, they've been selling underpowered systems long before the Switch, so your statement is unreasonable and unfair.
And im sure they could have tweaked the Switch juuuust a bit more here and there.
Anyway, my personal two cents on the matter:
While we've had some decent third party support, let's not kid ourselves here: There are still tonsssss of games that dont make it to the system due to obvious reasons. And the ones that DO come out are heavily watered down for the same obvious reasons.
Their philosophy is working for them financially, but they're still needlessly flawed.
Even if Nintendo starts selling consoles at a loss (due to graphical power and RAM) they would still make up the money with better third-party support. Some people forget that Nintendo takes a small cut from every game sold (not just their own titles, but from every title on the system as a whole). So Nintendo should start investing in hardware just a bit more, as the additional best-selling 'AAA' games would help them offset the cost of hardware.
@earthinheritor People complain a lot less when a Nintendo-owned IP is an old overpriced port, thats for sure. The bias among Nintendo fanboys is incredible.
The saddest part is that NL staff will see all these comments and will (probably) ignore the feedback, continuing to post garbage content just for the sake of posting.

The overall product is fine, but certain areas of the product are, without question, screwing you over. Not drastically so, but that still stands.

Nintendo is such a petty corporation. Like an old-fashioned parent who keeps their grown kids overly sheltered from the dangers of life.
For one good thing they bring to the table, all else is generally pathetic.
