Re: Nintendo Switch 10.0.0 Firmware Update Supposedly "Adds Preliminary Support For A New Hardware Model"

@Ralizah for most players, yeah, but the timing of the release necessitating a Switch port doesn't change the fact that the game was developed for the Wii U for five years or more. The Sheikah Slate was even envisioned to be the Wii U gamepad, so the player and Link would both be using it and looking at it for the map and inventory and such. This was omitted very late in development so the Wii U version wouldn't appear to have different features from the Switch version. It's very much a Wii U game that got a port, much like a significant number of successful Switch games. BotW 2 was even born out of what was initially DLC pack 3, according to the developers.
I think it's safe to say the Switch doesn't truly have its Zelda game yet. And I don't say this to argue, I say it optimistically to say the best is probably yet to come for this console generation.

Didn't one of the initial "NX" patents show some computing power built into the dock? I'd expect a "Pro" model to not necessarily supercharge the handheld portion, but to add some combination of additional CPU, GPU, and RAM into the dock. Then those of us who already have a Switch wouldn't need to shell out for a full $350+ console, just buy the new expansion dock by itself.

@sixrings Yeah, I like where you're coming from there. I'd just expect that a new tablet would be the more expensive way to go because of the screen and all the other internal components. But if the price'd be the same whether they went with a better tablet or a juiced-up dock, I could live with migrating all my data so long as it meant not having to buy EVERYTHING all over again.

I have no need for 4K but can certainly see where more power could help with things like lighting, particle effects, and more consistent framerate (looking at you Xenoblade 2, as much as I love you) so I'd welcome a Pro under certain circumstances. For example: didn't one of Nintendo's early NX-related patents show a dock with a separate processor? I don't like the idea of having to buy a whole new console at full price but would LOVE if the Pro was actually just a different dock with a modern version of the Expansion Pak idea. That way people new to Switch could buy the new "Pro" that comes with a console and the new dock, but us early adopters could buy just the expansion dock by itself instead of an entirely new console. I dont want to have to shell out another $300 (or more) in order to play the "best" version of Bayo3 or BotW2.

@Yosher I wouldn't say the SNES version is better, just different. I grew up with the original so when I'm expecting to see one thing and I see something else, it takes me out of the game for a second. They completely redid the script to be more accurate to the original Japanese, which I understand, but in doing so they removed a lot of flavor like Frog's pseudo-old-timey speech and Magus' sass. Many of the lines I could recite verbatim are just different now. They changed the names of a bunch of monsters, changed names of lots of attacks, etc, so like I want to attack the Winged Ape except it's called a Bao Bao now and I have to do a quick check to make sure I have the right enemy selected, that sort of thing. And then they went and shoehorned in a couple extra areas that are meant to tie the game in to Chrono Cross.

Lots of people consider the DS version superior due to these changes, and I totally understand that. But I'm quite nostalgic about the SNES game and have been wishing there was a way to play the version I grew up with. I'd assume it'd be easy to set the game up with an option to switch off the changes (like in the new Shenmue 1&2 release) but Square seems to be sticking with this moving forward. They drastically altered the menu system for the worse on mobile, then when they released the Steam version they just ported the mobile version over. They don't seem to be interested in releasing legacy versions. Now I'm afraid that if they DO release the game on Switch, they'll release the mobile port on that as well. I'm just concerned about losing the game I grew up with, in a way. Sorry for the novel, this game is a huge deal to me. πŸ˜…

@Godlike_Virus If you look in the background of some of the photos he tweets from his office, you can see Mario and Luigi dolls tied up Saturday morning cartoon style, and stuff like that. I think he's got some ridiculousness waiting up his sleeve, and this Direct was just a very cautious, gentle way of introducing him while all these corporate eyes are on them during E3.

During the Direct, yes, he was a bit stiff. But those things are scripted and recited to a tee. Did yall see him once the Treehouse feed started? He loosened up. He cracked a groan-worthy dad joke at Bill Trinen. He stumbled over a word. He was a person. And he seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself. I'd love to see NoA get back into doing the comedy skits and stuff they did during the Holy Trinity years, I think Doug would fit into the goofiness.

@Nomad I understand and agree with where you're coming from to a degree, but there was a point after the Dreamcast forced Sega into bankruptcy that they announced they'd focus on Sonic only because that was the only franchise that turned a profit. It's only recently after successful publishing deals like Bayonetta and the hype surrounding Shenmue that they're starting to dip their toes back into being an actual game company and not just a hedgehog factory.
