If it wasn't already official enough, it's now 100% confirmed – Bowser is Nintendo of America's president and there's no turning back. If you caught Nintendo's E3 2019 Direct presentation, you most-definitely saw Doug Bowser – Reggie's replacement – appear in his first Direct as the head of the American subsidiary.
If you did miss it, you can probably guess what went down. Instead of the human Bowser, Mario's arch-enemy actually appeared alongside Nintendo's Yoshiaki Koizumi. It was quite hilarious, as predictable as it might have been. Not long after this, the real Bowser eventually walked out and owned the spotlight while informing the other one about the mix-up. Here's a recap:
It's hard to believe, but it seems like Doug has already won over the majority of Nintendo's fans and it's all because his surname is Bowser. Honestly, this is all it took for people to trust the guy who's been troubling Mario for more than 30 years? Maybe every company should appoint a president who has a surname of relevance.
Regardless of this, we think Doug did a fantastic job in his first presentation as Nintendo of America's president. It's also got us wondering how Nintendo will keep this joke alive. Maybe Baby Bowser will appear in a future Direct? We guess we'll find out!
What did you think of this joke? Do you feel safe with Bowser in control of the American sector? Tell us below.

I mean, he didn't do poorly, certainly. But he was pretty forgettable.
I wish when they asked if the two of them were related, he had said "Yeah, but only very very distantly" or something like that.
"As of now , am in control here, in Nintendo of America" - Bowser
@Heavyarms55 I think if he really wanted to live up to his name's legacy and make a great first heel move (while still presenting great games all the while!), he should've taken a Mario doll and either stomped on it or lit it on fire.
If you thought there weren't going to have Bowser jokes / pun when Doug took Reggie's place... this, here, is just the beginning. Oh boy.
When I started to watch the Direct during my lunch break, I came in EXPECTING a Bowser joke. And it happened, as expected.
How to make it better:
Doug walks up. Bowser gets pressured by koizumi as to why he is there. Bowser runs away, only to leave a purple pikmin and 3ds with New Leaf dropped on the floor. The plot thickens
You can take off the clip on tie now, Bowser. :3
As a long time Nintendo fan I could be useful in rounding up others.
Nah. I don't want to rag on the guy, but if you were to rewatch, he didn't do much in terms of speaking or comedy. He only had one joke and it was the obvious one.
Plus, though it wasn't the worst, he had a slight stutter in the pre-recorded video. Of course it wasn't bad (they would just do another take) and it wasn't super serious, but its something to mention. Especially so since the immediate follow up to the direct (the pass over to the treehouse initial stage) had a pretty bad stutter at the end.
I won't judge character, but I think he needs some more PR training. More infliction in his voice and preventing said stutters. He'll improve with time, so I'm looking forward to it.
I like him, but he's a little too stiff, a little too corporate. Felt like I was at risk of being called into HR's office if I laughed at the jokes. Open up a bit, Doug, take off the sport coat and the tie and have some fun.
I thought it was nice. Doug seemed a bit flat but he probably just needs a bit of time to get comfortable on stage. Reggie didn't become a living meme overnight after all.
Am I the only one who loves Bowser's expression in that second image? That proud smugliness....
Is he gonna wear metroid pins and shirts and not give me what I want?
He didn't really do much, the CG Bowser was more entertaining.
So long, Doug Bowser!
I think they should have had subtitles for Bowser. Also I wonder if Japan got the joke?
Welcome to the Nintendo community Doug Bowser. We look forward to seeing what you could bring to the world of Nintendo.
@Heavyarms55
HE'S MY SON
cheesy dramatic music plays
I think he did great and the presentation was in keeping with Nintendo's spirit. So I'm pleased for everyone.
Nintendo Direct will never be authentic without "Please understand".
They should use deepfake to put Iwata's face on Bowser.
During the Direct, yes, he was a bit stiff. But those things are scripted and recited to a tee. Did yall see him once the Treehouse feed started? He loosened up. He cracked a groan-worthy dad joke at Bill Trinen. He stumbled over a word. He was a person. And he seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself. I'd love to see NoA get back into doing the comedy skits and stuff they did during the Holy Trinity years, I think Doug would fit into the goofiness.
I enjoyed the segment for what it was: Nintendo continuing to inject a little humor into their Directs. Sure you can't ever replace Iwata or Reggie's personalities, but Doug Bowser's debut could have been a lot worse. Let's give the guy a chance; after all, it's always about the GAMES in the end, and on that front it was a really good Direct.
@Godlike_Virus If you look in the background of some of the photos he tweets from his office, you can see Mario and Luigi dolls tied up Saturday morning cartoon style, and stuff like that. I think he's got some ridiculousness waiting up his sleeve, and this Direct was just a very cautious, gentle way of introducing him while all these corporate eyes are on them during E3.
I liked the introduction. It actually instantly won me over. I laughed out loud which I typically didn't do much with Reggie's goofs (not that they weren't funny or interesting, just not HILARIOUS).
I still miss Reggie, but I think that Bowser will at least fill out half if not more of those shoes if he continues like this.
A bit stiff, Imo but still endearing in that wholesome kind of way. I just hope he doesn't try too hard to become a living meme like Reggie, that can only end in disaster.
All around, not as funny as purple Pikmin, and not as endearing as Iwata, but those are big shoes to fill.
I think he did fine.
@chocolate_supra I noticed, and I liked. But I would like to think they could have a little more fun with it, I mean...this is Nintendo we're talking about here. But I do hope he'll do some antics like that a little more often, loosen up and be sort of a villainous but fun President. A villainous President that we can ACTUALLY LIKE in this country. Hm hm.
Good to see him having some fun! I'm reserving judgement until we get a better idea on how influential he can be. Got the feeling that Reggie was more often than not ignored in terms of his commercial recommendations. Switch has so much potential, but really feel like they aren't making the most of the opportunity.
It was sooo cheesy and you can tell he can't click his fingers, which I can't either, he was hardly in it to be fair.
But anything is better than Reggie in my opinion, really disliked him (don't hate me, I just didnt)
The internet really needed Bowser (the Koopa King) wearing a tie. I am pleased now.
Doug Bowser has insanely huge shoes to fill, I don't think it is fair to compare the man to Reggie's and Iwata's legacy right off the bat. I believe he did well in showing willingness to keep up with Nintendo's playful side. Iwata's successor would barely show up in Directs
Now we just need him clowning around on a mock meeting while "possesed" by an yokai for the announcement of the next Yokai Watch
It was incredibly cheesy, but that's why I loved it. It reminds me of the older Nintendo Directs when they would do stuff like this. I don't think he has the same charisma as Reggie did, but then again, who does?
@Ryu_Niiyama I checked out the Japanese direct afterwards, some red text in speakbubble-ish squares over them I think explained that Bowser's international name is Bowser.
@tobibra haha. That is cool!
Now Bowser can give DK his tie back.
It wasn't bad, but Bowser has a long way to go before reaching Reggie's charisma. Still, it was a nice first appearance as the new President of NoA.
I thought it was cute. Nowhere near as awesome as the Nintendo Muppets sketch or even the Regginator but still, I love that Nintendo is a company that is always ready to poke fun at itself!
He's no Reggie, but no one can fill those shoes. Hell, even Reggie had haters in the beginning. The fact they made this joke says much about how well Doug can fill those shoes. I'm sold on him, even though I still want Reggie back, and I can't wait to see where the company goes with him in the Captain's chair.
