Microsoft has just revealed that former Switch console exclusive Octopath Traveler is headed to its Xbox Game Pass service:
The game is already available on PC (see original story below) but it's now no longer Switch console exclusive. We dare say that a PlayStation release will follow in due course, too.
You can read about the other games coming to Xbox Game Pass over at Pure Xbox.
Original Story [Fri 12th Apr, 2019 03:00 BST]: When Square Enix announced Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent for mobile devices in March, it raised questions about how long Octopath Traveler would remain exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. Roughly a month later, a Korean rating for a PC version of the original outing was spotted online, seemingly confirming the inevitable.
It's now been confirmed by Square Enix the game will no longer be exclusive to the Switch. In a deleted blog post (thanks, Gematsu), the Japanese publisher revealed the JRPG would be released on 7th June on Valve's Steam platform.
Octopath Traveler was originally released on Nintendo's hybrid platform in July 2018. For a number of months, Square Enix had trouble keeping up with the demand for the game. Unsurprisingly, this isn't the first time the Switch has hosted a timed-exclusive. A Korean rating for Super Bomberman R on the PlayStation 4 was also discovered a year after the launch of the Switch version.
How do you feel about Octopath Traveler being ported across to the PC? Do you think this game should have remained a Nintendo Switch exclusive? Or are you glad more people will be able to play this game now? Tell us down below.

That’s fine. It’s always good to have games available for more people!
It is a console exclusive, nevertheless.
Time to throw away my switch now.
Mixed feelings. Switch exclusive for about a year was great. But i think its fine that more people will get to play this incredible game! We can always say "we got it first." Haha.
As a Switch owner of this game I think its awesome that more people will get to experience it. Hopefully if it sells well SE can make a sequel that actually ties the storylines more together!
You guys got Cuphead from Xbox and maybe might get Persona 5, this is fair in my opinion.
Don't care as long as PC doesn't get exclusive stuff like new characters or chapters. Otherwise I'm happy more people can play that game
Good. Now more people will be able to play it. Can't see anything wrong with that. And soon we Switch owners will get to enjoy Cuphead. Everybody's winning!
Good games traveling ( ) from the Switch is fine in my book. Why can't it be a two-way street?
Hope you PC players will enjoy it more than I did. That shouldn't be hard I think. Could not get into this game's story whatsoever.
I'm glad to see most people are cool about this. It seemed a while ago people would have a fit over exclusives going to other systems. Exclusives are nice when you first buy a system but at the end of the day I hate seeing any game locked to just one system.
I'm sorry but I'm not happy other players will get to experience the game. I say screw them; these are people who could've bought a Switch but didn't. I want as many games to be Switch exclusives as possible. Call me selfish but Switch isn't exactly drowning in 3rd party exclusives and losing the exclusivity to such a great game is a sad development. And, by the way, I understand I might be being unreasonable, and that's okay.
And we can all laugh as they pay full price while we pay......full price, wait, what?? That's not how it's suppose to work....
The timed exclusive practice is annoying but fair, as long as all platforms receive the same amount of love and content.
Once PC gets their own premium packs and DLC, THEN I will have an issue.
Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to this if only to see what the modding community can do to this game to improve it or add something new.
Not even a full year? Jeez exclusivity means nothing these days I guess
i'm glad that this is coming to PC.
Really really really good news if the sequel is exclusive to Switch for a year. Between a PC port and a mobile game, that means the sequel could have potential to bring brand new buyers to Switch.
Great. Now more people can buy this game and not finish it.
Consoles should have first and second party exclusives but I've never understood third party exclusives.
@MisterMan Great. Now more people can buy this game and not finish it.
LOL, I couldn't even finish the demo so I never bought it. After all the hype died down and people started talking about it's shortcomings I was glad I never bought it.
It's nice to see an end to exclusivities. IMO players should not be penalized for what system they bought. As a developer I would want as many people as possible to play my game not just a handful of people.
Steam is such a port machine!
I will eventually get this when it’s like 30 bucks on the Eshop. Not because I don’t think it is worth more, rather it’s not one of my favorite genres.
Cool to see it on PC. I suspect many Bravely Default fans will be happy to hear the news.
Shouldn't all 3rd party publishers aim to get their IP on as many platforms as possible?
@Kevember The game can still be purchased and played on the Switch you dolt, losing it's exclusivity doesn't make the game better or worse. Or did you only cared for it cause it was an exclusive?
Good more people can enjoy this awesome game.
Now I know how XBOX fans feel
@MsJubilee Are you sure you are replying to the right comment? Or do you just not know how to read?
@MisterMan I didn't even finish the DEMO. 2 times, gave up.
I'll get it as a $15 Steam sale someday. Just to see it in 2K
It's fine to let them to have it on PC.. WE ALSO GET CUPHEAD.. RIGHT? RIGHT?
... I still haven’t played it. 😐
Doesn't matter, we're getting the sequel on Switch anyways.
I guess it is exclusive ON THE GO only, and that's Switch.
That's fine by me.
Great news for the PC crowd. I still need to pick this game up myself.
Cool I guess. Never caught my attention
Sweet, now all platforms can experience what an overrated fuss this has become!
Contrary to this game's (very) vocal critics, I enjoyed it. It won't go down as much more than one of the many highlights of the Switch's library, but it was easy enough to recommend to JRPG fans.
It'll be a treat to play this in 4K with unlocked FPS, assuming SE does a proper job with the port. For a game like this, it was frustrating to see it struggle maintaining 30 FPS.
As for losing exclusivity, OT is still a console exclusive. Had it been ported to the X1 or PS4 with superior resolution and performance, all the Switch would have on the other versions is portability. That alone is enough to justify a purchase for some, though.
At least it's not exclusive to Epic. 😂
Switch still got it first. As opposed to like 95% of all other games which come to a Nintendo platform second or third, if at all.
@icerzerocool You can get gaming laptops
@TheAwesomeBowser Yeah, I'm really happy about that.
And this was just a timed exclusive. I might actually going to double dip on this.
@sanderev Laptop is on the go too, but you have to put it on the table or on your lap to play it. Switch is different. It is 10x faster to access the game and more efficient.
This was my Game of the year in 2018, hope it will sell well on pc. Its would be well deserved.
@Kevember I appreciate your honesty and totally understand your line of thought. On the other hand, snooty PC master race gamers would never dirty their hands with a joy-con. At least this way they get to appreciate something of what the Switch has to offer.
I don't care, the more people see it's brilliance, the better.
Exclusivity means nothing to me.
@sanderev Not that a game like Octopath would warrant a gaming laptop. I guess it's running well on any 400-500 buck office rig.
Once persona 5 confirm for the switch then nobody gives a damn about this.
@Scollurio Those 2D-HD graphics though...
It takes time much like fighting ex layer to PC. Phoenix Wright is in abundance everywhere.
Always good to reward someone who bought first though. Similar to detective Pikachu Pokemon trading cards on opening weekend.
@N8tiveT3ch you only bought a Switch for one game?
Now I know why it's in a "sale". It's to stop the PC version being cheaper on release than the 1 year old Switch version!
Hooray! Now even more people can be disappointed in Octopath Traveler.
@N8tiveT3ch if you’re throwing away your switch then why do you keep commenting on Nintendo Life?
Crap those exclusivities, games are made for everyone's enjoyment.
Now bring Persona 5 and Jump force to Nintendo Switch!
@N8tiveT3ch wouldn’t you be better off selling it?
Hopefully this will lead to a price drop on the physical release
I think that’s good news
I hope a physical copy might get a bit cheaper now.
Oh I am furious! I will smash my switch to bits and flush it! Or you know be happy more people can play the game and it might lead to a quicker sequel. But that would logical.
No problem with this; however I can kinda see the advantage of an initially exclusive 3rd party game as it allows developers to concentrate exclusively on developing for a single platform and getting the most out of said platform. Most of the most visually impressive 3rd party titles I can think of (Okami, MGS4, Crysis) all were as exclusive to one platform. Most eventually made their way to others.
This game and I have a weird relationship; it kinda drags on and I take regular breaks but I keep on coming back to it as I find the characters endearing. Lovely soundtrack too; already picked 2 tracks for my wedding reception.
For me, this game is made for the Switch. Amazing in portable mode.
Just started and only 3 hours in. Perfect fit for the Switch.
And we got Cuphead and Senya's Sacrifice game
It's a third party game. Only fanboys card about nonsense like this. Plenty of PC games are coming to Switch (Civilization VI comes to mind) and now a Switch game can go to PC, like most 3rd party exclusives on other consoles.
We just got God Eater 3 announced, and Cuphead, likely Persona 5, not to mention Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII, World of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest Builders, the aforementiioned Civilization VI, and that's just off the top of my head.
It goes both ways.
Honestly, I’m glad. I play a lot on my laptop (built my own rig and literally crammed it into a case - soldering intensifies) and Steam is much more likely to have sales. Yes, I know it’s on sale just now but with the wealth of Steam sales and key sites, I could get it for a great price considering this version will undoubtedly be missed to include uncapped FPS and 4K resolution. That’s if SE don’t do that first, which is unlikely looking at their other ports. I love my Switch, but it’s the exclusives I’m really interested in and any excuse to play on my laptop and I will.
I'm ok with this but I rather play the game in handheld mode on my switch
I would just like to point out how amazing this fanbase is. While xbox and ps players would be throwing a fit about this, everyone here is just happy that others get to enjoy a great game. It's nice to be apart of such a wonderful community.
@KingdomHeartsFan we knew the Switch version of DQ XI would be getting more content than the PS4 and PC version. I mean, it was obvious to anyone with half a brain, considering the additional content the 3ds version had, and the fact it was never being released outside of Japan. Only logical the Switch version which would release outside of Japan, would end up with a lot of additional content to make up for a two year wait.
Good. Third party games being exclusive to anything is stupid anyway (unless the platform holder has funded their existence, I can let that go).
Thankfully they’re dying out and hardly exist anywhere these days. That’s why I don’t understand some Switch owners bleating about not having many. No system does.
@Krull The world is not as polar as you act like it is. I have a RTX 2080 PC and Switch and enjoy them both.
@Kevember Comments like yours make Nintendo fans looks bad. If you can't stop being egotistical, then stop yourself from talking about it.
@Jackal TBF, I didn't say all PC gamers sneer at consoles - I specified the snooty master race ones! Of which, even you must admit, there are some. Just like there are Nintendo fans who have to pour scorn on anything Sony does, and vice versa.
I am in none of these camps, by the way. Gaming should be for everyone. Apart from Albanians*.
*(Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter reference - not genuine racism...)
I think this is great. It allows a game to be enjoyed by more people, and that's never a bad thing. However, I would imagine it would stay a console exclusive, although I could be wrong about that.
Two years is a pretty good run though.
It's still exclusive between the game console/handheld makers, and at the same time after a year allowing PC owners to experience a fantastic game which would have no baring on Nintendo at all. Wins all around, and any hate on this would be lame fanboy behavior.
@Pod It came out in July of last year.
@Trajan
Ah, my bad. I remembered at as having come out closer to launch.
Yay more people get to play this! I'll tell a buddy of mine as he has not bought a switch yet. I always loved how there was random overlap in the stories, with all of them either feeding into or being impacted by the final boss. Felt more organic than the RPGs that are more blunt about making the heroes tie together.
It's no longer exclusive... ok. It doesn't belong to me, I played it on Switch, and life goes on I guess.
@Jackal I don't know where you're from but where I live we believe in the concept of saying whatever we want. I'm not doing PR for "Nintendo fans" so I couldn't care less if I make them look bad as you say. I want Nintendo to do well and I know they need the exclusives.
Sad to see the Switch lose such a good game as an exclusive. Square could've at least said it was a timed-exclusive at one point, but nah, random PC port out of nowhere.
@shoeses It's been a timed exclusive for more than a year. And really I'm fine with it hitting the PC. I wouldn't even mind an XBOX or PS release of the game.
Nice!!!!!
The more the marier
I think timed exclusives are fine for 3rd party material.
If we're going to have big 3rd party titles to come to Switch, then we have to be okay with big 3rd party titles also being on other platforms.
Octopath Traveller is one of those games that should live on as many platforms as it can, like the original FF titles.
@icerzerocool Nope, GPD Win makes almost all PC games portable too.
So far, portable PCs, that fit in your pocket and are designed for gaming on the go, are a new and fledging technology, but it is already enough for playing light, indie games.
@NintendoFan4Lyf @icerzerocool There are pocket gaming PC's, like the GPD Win 2 or Smach Z, that could play this on the go as well.
Portable gaming PC's are an upcoming tech, largely thanks to the new range of smaller, more power efficient processors coming out.
Nintendo had to license their localizations for this to happens, so be thankful that Nintendo permit this. As for other consoles...
Final Fantasy 7 had a PC release. This is nothing out of the ordinary from SE. More folk that play it the better
if its timed exclusive then ya probably shouldn't of bothered with it to begin with
@Kevember
You may believe in being able to say whatever you want, but that doesn't stop what you're saying from being stupid.
Least surprising news ever. Name one Square Enix game that's a Nintendo system exclusive, I'll wait.
Then list all of Squeenix's games that are still PS exclusives.
Both errands will take an awful lot of your time.
@MsJubilee You list Persona 5 as if it possibly coming to Nintendo now has nothing to do with the fact that Joker was announced as a playable character in Smash anyways. Yeah, does sound fair. I doubt anyone would have thought the strictly exclusive Persona series would have a chance to be on Switch otherwise if not for that fact.
@AlexSora89 Mario RPG
@sanderev 11 months.
@AlexSora89 Bravely Default / Second
@sanderev @Trajan
It feels so good to be wrong sometimes.
Why do some people act like you can't enjoy a game unless it's "exclusive"?
Thats it! I'm burning my Switch and deleting my Nintendo account.
Ah well, more people can enjoy it now.
Not bothered by this at all. 3rd party exclusives are getting rarer and rarer anyway and it's certainly not a bad thing that more people will get to play this fantastic game.
Plus, at least for now it remains a "console exclusive" for the people who care about that kind of thing.
@sanderev haha they're lovely, but would probably run on my kitchen timer!
Its always sad to see "exclusives" go away, especially since Nintendo devices are notorious for losing their exclusives, minus the first party titles of course.
@Kevember Why so toxic? The Switch would have plenty of third party support if it was as capable as the other consoles, but that's Nintendo's fault. If you develop games for a living what system are you going to focus on, the Switch with 30 million units sold, or the PS4 with nearly 100 million units sold. One would like to have games on both, but one console developer decided to use inferior hardware and charge a premium because they know they have a good library at their fingertips to rely on. The switch has some awesome games, and I finally got one due to that, I wont complain about what console has what games, if you see enough on the opposing console to justify buying it, then go buy it I say.
@AlexSora89 its not made by them just published, Nintendo published in North America which is why its here in the first place.
@XS3nigma
Still annoyed by how easily Square Enix ports its Nintendo games to PlayStation, when the opposite hardly ever happens. I'm still waiting for anything Kingdom Hearts on Switch, in case my username didn't tip you right off.
Oh wow, I still haven’t played it but I have Game Pass PC so finally I can!
Well, I originally had it physically on Switch & then traded that in to get it on Steam, while it was half price there ..... So, although it coming to XBox doesn't help me, I'm happy it'll be available there for anyone who wanted it on that platform
@AlexSora89 just to throw more wood on the fire, Kingdom Hearts Days / Recoded. Every Dragon Quest Monsters game. Rocket Slime. Chocobo Tales. Tactics A & A2. TWEWY and NEO.
I am sure the chronicles of the Salt Iron War will also be available sometime after the Switch eventually as well.
Don’t see why anyone would be angry about this we got cuphead and ori so it’s only fair right?
Great game, but i only like it on the switch, to play on a handheld on the go.
@Cosats that aged well
I've wanted to get this for a while but refused to pay full price for such an old game and now I can play it for free.
Its making me wonder what kind of deal Square Enix and Microsoft have got going with this now coming to Gamepass and Outriders Day 1.
At least more people can play this great game!
@Mr-Fuggles777 I hate ur profile picture.
@HotGoomba it's just a happy little Fuggler.
Good, I will be playing for the first time on GamePass. I wish La-Mulana 1-2 also comes to GamePass
@Mr-Fuggles777 looks like a fuggler furby bred
Same for undertale...
(IT wasnt switch exclusive to start, it just got put on Xbox)
@AlexSora89 Lmao especially even funnier considering the Kingdom Hearts side games like 358/2 Days and Dream Drop Distance which were formerly Nintendo exclusives are now on literally everything thanks to the collections
@Cosats this did not age well
@NikHogan Lmaoooo, they got banned anyway. Went after the writers on some sort of vendetta.
Cool! More games for everyone!
Haven't played this on switch yet but I do have game.pass 👀
As long as they come to Switch, why would it be a problem if they also went elsewhere.
It's interesting how things have changed. Seems that any Nintendo 3rd party exclusive which doesn't use a Nintendo IP has a very good chance of coming to PS/Xbox.
Anyway it's nice to see that more people will be able to play this and I hope as it's coming to Xbox, a PS4 version is announced soon too.
This site might as well be called Pure Xbox 2.
Guess i wont support fake exclusives from square anymore.
Somehow I sense that at some point the Xbox version will be cheaper than Switch version even though it coming to Xbox much later. Love that Switch tax.
I mean, it's still a great game. The more people that play it the better (and the more chance we see another one - or maybe Chrono Trigger / FF6 remade in the same style. I would love that!
I do not understand why are people mad if a game is no longer an exclusive?
They like to justify their console purchase and feel "superior" to gamers that do not own that console?
If the publishers/devs CAN make their games multiplatform I am all in for that! The more the better!
The more people that play Octopath, the better.
This amazing gem should be available for everyone, that's awesome
Been on stadia for pretty longtime
Still at least we're getting Project Triangle Strategy and Monster Hunter Rise before everyone else and the new Bravely Default II probably won't be leaving the Switch any time soon considering the first two never did leave the 3DS. Secondly we got a ton of exclusives coming soon anyways like Disgaea 6, Rune Factory 5, Bayonetta 3, Shin Megami Tensei V, No More Heroes 3, Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash, Monster Hunter Stories 2, the Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad Collection, and Splatoon 3.
It's great that more people get to play octopath traveler the better but Xbox doesn't seem to be the console you buy if you're into RPGs and to me it seems like octopath is a game you play if you're into RPGs
@Bizzyb But isn't the sequel in mobiles?
Hold on a minute... A JRPG from Square-Enix that comes on Xbox before PlayStation?
Hopefully this will lead to a hefty discount on Switch at some point
It's been long enough, but I hope the newer versions don't have exclusive features that never come to Switch. That's partly why I never bought any version of Bomberman R.
good. More people that can play it, the better
Why would any sane person care?
@AcridSkull
That's a nice thought, but the game was published by Nintendo in North America and Europe and Nintendo doesn't know the meaning of the term hefty discount.
For proof of this, take a look at pricing on Dragon Quest XIS on PS4/Xbox/PC compared to Switch. The Switch version came out first and is much more expensive than the newer PS4/Xbone/PC releases. Why? Because Nintendo doesn't do discounts like the rest of the industry.
I have a switch but never picked this up. I have Game Pass so I'm pleased to be able to play Octopath Traveller there. Microsoft has really been killing it when it comes to game pass content recently. I still don't think I will renew game pass once my promotional offer expires (got it for the $1 per month upgrade from Xbox Live Gold) but if you're into subscription services it's really quite good.
@ModdedInkling TBF, it looks like Microsoft jumped the gun here lol. I’d suspect they were going to announce PS4 and Xbox version on the show😉
@nessisonett for real!? wow XD
More people get to play this great game. I support this. This is a good thing.
Hopefully they'll eventually release it for Playstation too. Always wanted to play this game (really liked the demo too), but for some reason I never got it.
@MatchaDanjo Jump Force is already on Switch though
i'm glad that more people will get to play this game.
i still haven't pick it up yet.. and i should, because it's been on my radar.
That's great news! The more people who can play Octopath Traveler, the better. Now they need to bring this gem over to the PS4, and that will be a day-1 purchase for me at full price.
@superguy123 lol, what? Are you saying you won't buy a game because it's NOT exclusive to your console of choice? That's really petty, dude! Can't even imagine how many great games you've missed out on with that mentality.
Great news - game pass with Xbox series x is sensational.
@nessisonett LMAO I DIDN'T KNOW THAT
Dang, I wish people on here were this supportive when the Switch gets ports. Still need to pick this game up on Switch myself, glad even more people will get to play this though.
@superguy123 What? How dare Square bring a great game to other platforms? That makes no sense, you're not losing out by having the game being ported! It's just being put on another console so more people can experience it! And you're mad about that!? Man ur such a fanboy (or girl)!
@Cosats its on pc
@Tyranexx u know how many jrpg are not on Xbox but are everywhere else? Because the Xbox fans won't buy them
More people having access to a great game is a good thing.
@Dman10 Somehow I sense that at some point the Xbox version will be cheaper than Switch version even though it coming to Xbox much later. Love that Switch tax
The xbox version will be launching cheaper than Switch, its free on GamePass.
So happy for this, it's such a great game. Really impressed with Game Pass. Would recommend it to ANY gamer. Incredible value for the price. No need to be a hater with exclusive this or exclusive that. It's an awesome service which has saved me a TON of money and I've only had it for two weeks! When the service launched back in 2018, it sucked but man is it totally worth it now
Big mistake by Nintendo, First Dragon Quest XI S isn't an exclusive now Octopath. I am guessing that Nintendo figures that people will pass on the Xbox/PS4 versions because they can't be played on the go like the Switch versions. Still you need some third party exclusives to entice people to buy your console over the other guys especially since Xbox now has Bethesda under them.
@HotGoomba go defend huge corps lying to their fanbase.
I'm a fanboy? Sure bro. You're prob the same type of person who still buys ubi, ea and activision games after been lied to.
Go throw your money at em. They'll happily rake it all in and lie some more.
If they had said timed exclusive day 1. There wouldve been zero ***** given.
This is yet another petty attempt to squeeze money out of their consumer base.
Shill some more for these bad practices please
Another huge W for Xbox fans.
It's incredible how much value Gamepass offers.
So happy to have a Series X.
It's been on Stadia for a long time, lol! Stupid clickbait.
@DocEggman Stadia isn't a console
Problem is you don't own the game. Alot of people forget this. Xbox got you by the acorn when you buy but own nothing.
@Damo What difference does that make in the article? It hasn't been a Nintendo Switch exclusive for a long time. Console, handheld, streaming or otherwise. This is old, old news.
This is a bad thing. Less people people should play bad games. I hope Gamepass players stay away, for their sake.
I can't believe anyone would even care about this (besides Gamepass subscribers, good for them to get it!)
@Mr-Fuggles777 It is free on game pass, but if you have the Xbox but don't have game pass, how much will it be a year from now compared to Switch version? also, it is probably on game pass for a limited time.
@superguy123 So your mad that a game that is popular is being recognized for it's popularity and the company is answering demands from consumers who likely cannot afford the console that it's on, or doesn't want to buy it for one game? And games go on different platforms all the time. If ur seriously not going to buy anything from a company for the SIMPLEST thing,
"You are a sad strange little man."
–Buzz Lightyear (1995, Disney•Pixar Toy Story)
(Notice how I haven't taken you seriously this whole time)
@DocEggman calm down, he was obviously kidding, and besides, who even has Stadia?
Meh. It's been on the Switch for two years now so it going to Xbox is no biggie. If someone wanted it on Switch they'd probably bought it by now. Nice for Xbox only owners especially those who enjoy JRPG games. I'm sure a lot of Xbox owners are starved for this kind of old school RPG.
A lot of people really enjoyed the game and I'm happy that even more will be able too.
Game came out summer 2018... almost three years ago. It's fine that's its coming to other platforms. If you're that hurt by this game leaving switch as an exclusive just look at the PC sales vs switch sales. PC only sold like half a mill while switch had 2 mill+, other platforms will probably see similar number to PC meaning future projects will still be developed primarily with switch in mind. Stop complaining about exclusivity, the more the merrier!
Awesome. More accessibility is always nice. Now just bring it over to PS4🤣 A physical version would also be much appreciated.
@DocEggman It not being exclusive to Switch is indeed old news (this article was originally published in 2019, when it was confirmed for PC). The new news is that it's no longer a CONSOLE exclusive, as is clearly stated in the revised title of the story and the opening paragraph.
That the game is no longer a console exclusive is significant news, as is evidenced by the fact that this has been one of today's most-viewed articles.
Hope that clears things up!
@superguy123 Guess i wont support fake exclusives from square anymore.
I guess you won't be playing Ori or Cuphead on the switch either then as both of those were "fake" Xbox exclusives.
Nintendo probably has the strongest first party line up so I have no idea why people get worked up about third party games going multi platform - its good that people who don't have a switch get to play them.
@HotGoomba People who enjoy playing AAA stuff on crappy hardware, lol!
@Wexter Haha I agree. Xbox players might as well be drip-fed JRPGs. Although, it's nice how things are beginning to change with DQ11S, KH collections and now Octopath Traveler on Xbox.
lets be honest. Octopath Traveler hasn't been a NS exclusive for a long while.
Came to PC in like 2019 and then to Google Stadia last year
@Kevember Your logic is flawed, though. Blame Microsoft or Square Enix, not the gamers. It’s not as if Xbox gamers were clamoring for the game or anything of that nature. Your anger, or at the very least, your frustration is directed at the wrong place.
@yuwarite I don't think we will see Astral Chain because Platinum Games confirmed that it is a Nintendo IP now so yeah.
But who knows. Maybe it might come
@Nerdfather1 there really isn't anything wrong with octopath coming to xbox.
Its good that more people will get to enjoy it.
I also find it funny that Octopath Traveler, a JRPG is coming to Xbox before Playstation
@Damo Gonna re-re-release an update when we find another arbitrary subcategory to lump it under? I don't get what newsworthy difference it makes, but enjoy the traffic, which is evidence of clickbait, not a momentous occasion. It's already on at least three different platforms, but touting it as exclusivity of any kind and justifying it by tacking "console" on the end is unimportant. The headliner clearly implies it was a Nintendo Switch exclusive, but when you read further, you find it was already out for a long time on other platforms. This is like those "new game date" headliners and it's nothing but speculation when no date has been announced. It's not news, it's bait.
@anoyonmus I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it coming to Xbox either. In fact, I’m very excited to play the game and get some achievements for it. I enjoyed the game on my Switch, but I’m definitely going to replay the game.
@Mr-Fuggles777 like i said. Its not about exlusivity going away. Its the lie in the first place.
I see it like this in particular.
Square couldnt be bothered to localize / distribute the game overseas, so NOA did.
Guess who publishes their games in north america and europe on playstation and *****? Yeah square.
Face it they dont care about switch owners, they care about your money, lie to get it, flip us off and publish the game themselves.
Its such an anti-consumer practice.
This is a pretty small lie in comparison but not the first time them or any other 3rd party company did this.
Meanwhile they still arnt even committed to getting their games on switch.
Just a select few. No kingdom hearts, dq 4-6, and so many other games that square is just not porting over anyways.
Dont get me wrong though.
I heavily supported square in the past and now, but really getting at this point where all the misguidance, lies and ***** just are not worth supporting a company like this again.
It's a shame as i always held japanese studio's to a higher standard than western ones.
@superguy123 all companies just want your money and will look at ways to maximise profit streams, its not worth getting worked up over. Buy the games that you want to play and don't think about the corporate politics, its supposed to be a hobby.
I use my switch for first party Nintendo games and hardly ever buy third party on it because they are always overly expensive and don't drop in price, so things like this don't bother me. In fact this has actually turned out great, I've not long bought a Series S with gamepass so I will finally get to play Octopath
@superguy123 Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
Okay, dude!
I'm just happy more people get to play a terrific game.
I really don't get what your deal is or what you're hung up over, but whatever it is, you'll probably feel better if you just let it go. XD
Yet FFVIIR is still PlayStation only?
No reason for Square to do Nintendo exclusive to be honest. Sure they could nick 1-2m on Nintendo but their biggest IPs like FF, Nier and Tomb Raider all 5m+ seller on other platforms.
It's always a weird move to me whenever Square try to please Nintendo crowd when they really should try to please the growing discontent of their largest fanbase on PlayStation.
@locky-mavo Sony has exclusive rights till April 2021. Maybe multiplat release someday, I mean it took KH almost 15 year for xbox and 20 years for a PC release.
@yuwarite astral chain is trademarked by nintendo. Can't see it happening unless nintendo be more open like PS and Xbox on PC release.
@yuwarite platinum is both contracted to make bayonetta 3 on Switch and Babylon Fall for PS/PC so you have to wait a while for that true multiplat.
More exposure to more people is a good thing. Hopefully might mean we'll get another game in the series or more rpgs.
@Spoony_Tech Lol this comment cracked me up, because I was thinking about recommending a friend try out project triangle and was going to suggest maybe trying out octopath too but since it's still full price I was apprehensive (he has gamepass though so this will be good).
I fired the game up and saw the last time I played it was 2018, surely those 3 years should have at least knocked 15 bucks off by now, especially since it's not even a Nintendo game.
Edit: Oh wow, lol they just updated the article from 2019.... I thought this was new from today. 🤦🏾♂️
Their staggered strategy for this game is interesting. Octopath Traveler is definitely a "core gamer" title, so it is unique that they brought it to "the Nintendo console" first and let it sell, then followed it up with releases on the traditional PC and big black box consoles. Interested to see how it sells on those platforms compared to the Switch, curious to see if its Switch sales will have outperformed the other consoles, Game Pass sales included, when all is said and done. Between Octopath and their upcoming strategy RPG, I would say they have done a great job in supporting the Switch with new IPs.
Whaaatttt, that's absurd! They want to release a 2018 game on Nintendo Switch for 60 d... oh wait, that's fine, it's for xbox and maybe ps5
@OnlyItsMeReid Surely you meant jrpgs, because the Xbox has never lacked for RPGs in general, when the 360 came out they were even doing a heavy push for jrpg games that just started getting remastered and released on the ps4 and switch recently.
@jbreez00 Yeah but my comment probably still holds up well today lol.
@jancotianno not like Switch games dropped prices much 🤣🤣
And I do think Square will lower the price, I mean DQXIS is still $50 on Switch right? It starts $40 on other system and was on sale already.
@yuwarite I agree. Though Bayonetta belongs to SEGA and not Nintendo. This why Sega still publishes the Bayonetta x Vanquish on modern console.
Nintendo only buy rights for individual releases like bayonetta 2 & 3.
@Menardi will be hard to top switch ver as its one of the earliest title on the system back then and games library was small. Be interesting on the player engagement on gamepass.
@Nerdfather1 I wrote that comment a while back and I no longer espouse that opinion. I now agree with you and the other people who replied to me.
@Dman10 It's cheaper already because it's on Game Pass.
@Kevember I hate when they just "update" a two year old article because apparently it's too hard to write a few extra sentences about a current issue. It just leads to confusion in the article and then nonsense in the comments when people are getting mad at stuff people said years ago. I got a bunch of comments (similar to what happened with you) on another article because I mentioned something wouldn't be out for another year at least and people were like "lol idiot it's out in a month" but the article was 18 months old and updated. Ah well.
Octopath already did what it was meant to do for the Switch when it came out years ago. It helped the system when it needed some extra third party support. The Switch is a success. It's not going to tank because Octopath went multiplatform. To those annoyed by this, just let people on other platforms enjoy a solid RPG.
Shrugs . That's good. I'm glad I got to play it in my "handheld" Switch anyway. A good game
I guess it means the death of Nintendo Switch? Was it a failure like Stadia?
@dres exactly this. The Switch has failed miserably and even first party titles will go multiplat. Such a shame that Nintendo can’t make innovative titles anymore and are so irrelevant.
Not an exclusive anymore? This will retroactively prevent me from having enjoyed the game on the first place!
I'll never understand why people feel cheated when a game isn't exclusive anymore. More platforms means bigger budget for a sequel.
@DocEggman "Console exclusivity" and "exclusivity" are two very different things; the first means a direct competitor now has the game, which is news-worthy (right or wrong, PC / Stadia isn't seen as a 'direct' competitor at present).
A title which clearly states that it's no longer a "console exclusive" cannot be bait, as that's exactly what has happened.
Good. The fewer exclusives, the better.
@Tasuki "As a developer I would want as many people as possible to play my game not just a handful of people."
And this is why these so-called "blockbusters" these days are a pile of garbage.
Also... ask your sister or some other girl how being on the internet feels like. You get creepy messages every day. On Reddit I read once that some dating site changed the amount of people you can message within a time and some guy complained about it because he wants to "reach as many women as possible". ...Yeah... That's really desperate... Have fun with being forever alone. x3
And I don't even want to talk about the very sexual messages even 70yo guys send me.
But on the other side, the most pointless message is btw... "Hi"
Why on earth should I reply to a Hi from a person I don't know?
I have no idea what's going on in a male brain... Instead of flooding everyone with your ""As a developer I would want as many people as possible to play my game not just a handful of people."" attitude maybe try to do something special for once.
You know why they can remake Pokemon until the end of time? Because it doesn't matter how much Nexomon or TemTem you have, Pokemon will always be the real deal. And all of them are great. When you look at western junkfood bLocKbuStoRs on the other hand (that will one day even run on a smartfridge or microwave or the toilet)... does it even matter if you play AC Odyssey or AC Valhalla? Or FC3, 4, 5 or New Dawn? It's all the same. And now we have Fenyx which is basically another boring AC but with, because Ubi realised that - who could have thought that - people like Zelda, a Zelda skin... At first you're on it because you're curious. But it gets more disgusting and disappointing the longer you're at.
And that's why exclusive games are great! Not saying GameFreak would be perfect (I would prefer Genius Sonority. They did Colosseum and XD), but I would rather give them 50€ for a Pokemon Remake, than Ubisoft 30€ in a sale for a gold edition of any of their "new" empty and soulless games that are about running around forever and killing people on the way for no reason. Thank you.
@XS3nigma "The Switch would have plenty of third party support if it was as capable as the other consoles, but that's Nintendo's fault."
I'm pretty sure Nintendo would be very interested in it if you could show them how to put an XBox Series X into a tablet...
But no, you're wrong. The Switch is powerful enough for it's target audience. Children, families, adults who love childhood games, people who're travelling a lot (or work so much that they even sleep at work), and people who like Japanese games.
For whatever reason it's mostly always the westeners who believe that everything ever is made for them and that the world revolves around them. Look, I see it like this: If I would be interested in junkfood-tier games like the west is doing them, where most of the budget moves into graphics, to hide that the game has no soul, and the CEOs pocket, I would buy an XBox and not a Switch. But I like Nintendo games and Japanese games, and so I bought a console from Nintendo, who're Japanese. Simply as that. Really, I don't understand that. Why are people always buying things that aren't for them, and then complain it and want everything to be changed for them, instead of just buying a product that actually was made for them?
@Cosats Then why does it say PC?
Oh, darn, people on other systems will be able to play a game that I've been enjoying on the Switch. Whatever will I do?
@Altina I agree, I’m all up for multi platform games, but there’s something special about exclusive games that are tailored and designed towards a specific audience and the hardware.
I believe Octopath Traveler was designed for people who grew up with turn-based 16-bit sprite JRPGs and if it was designed for other platforms in mind, the game could have been radically different mechanically (more action based) and artistically (more realistic and gritty and possibly more boobish) in order to appeal to a wider demographic.
Not sure why anyone would care.
It did it’s job on Switch. If they wanna port games down the line, that’s great. I think Xbox needs more JRPGs anyways. And given the fact we got Cuphead, Ori Blind Forest, Ori Will of the Wisps, it’s not like it isn’t tit for tat.
Timed exclusivity is just the new thing nowadays. Virtually all of PlayStation exclusives are now multiplat or at the very least on PC- even their own 1st party titles are now coming to PC.
It’s give and take. If porting a few 3rd party Switch exclusives a year or two after the fact is the price that must be paid for Xbox and PS exclusives to go multiplat, then that’s a win for everyone.
Fact is, Switch is the only console left that doesn’t put their 1st party games on PC, and it’s the only console where every game released is exclusively hybrid handheld. You could port the entire 1st party library onto every single platform and Switch would still sell, just based off the hybrid advantage.
So ya. Cheers to Xbox. I still prefer PC rather than the Xbox console due to gyro aiming, but what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I’m loving seeing Xbox actually become relevant again.
@Altina Let's please tone it down with the analogies.
@Cosats Weeellllll.....not anymore
@JaxonH I'm still waiting for Lost Odyssey to come to any other modern platform. Xbox One, PS4/5, PC, the Switch would even be lovely.
@superguy123 if you only buy a game because it's an exclusive you're just being a tool.
@shining_nexus I don't really think that's what they would've done at all. Grit is done and dusted and has been since the PS4 first hit. More "boobish"? I could see that with a JRPG. But I don't know about action and stuff. It's a callback to 16-bit JRPGs, after all.
@jrb363
Oh I know. Or even PC at the very least!
I know you can emulate it but the cutscenes stuttered last time I tried. Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon really need Steam releases.
The only thing exclusive was it was a physical on Switch. That's something xbox nor stadia can never claim to have. So those with Switch can sell, give away - that's something neither xbox or stadia can ever do.
@aaaaaa true, it is a callback so it may not have been as radically different as I mentioned.
It's still a dedicated handheld exclusive, which is the best way to power through a good JRPG.
@Kevember I bought the Collectors Edition of Octopath Traveller on my Switch, loved the game to bits. (My favourite alongside 3 Houses)
That I can now play it on Xbox One (Series X) too? Only a good thing! I'll revisit it and get Gamerscore to boot playing a game I already know I love..
@jbreez00 Yeah
@JaxonH Apparently Lost Odyssey also has a few game breaking bugs and it's currently not fully playable once you get to a certain section.
The operative word was DEDICATED.
